what's up guys it's Rowan here from art
[1]
of Smart TV and when I asked students
[4]
what do you want to do with your life
[6]
when you finish school one of the most
[8]
common answer students give me is I want
[11]
to study a law degree and right now I'm
[14]
standing in front of Sydney University's
[16]
law school and I actually attended here
[19]
as a student and I loved my experience
[21]
of studying law at Sydney University but
[24]
despite this I'm actually gonna be
[26]
sharing with you why you should not
[28]
study a law degree that's right why you
[31]
should not I know that sounds
[33]
controversial but let's jump in and find
[35]
out why
[42]
so when I decided to study a law degree
[45]
I thought it had an amazing career
[47]
prospects
[48]
you know what's the jobs great salary
[51]
but it turns out I was incredibly wrong
[54]
first of all there's currently about
[58]
15,000 students that graduate every year
[61]
around Australia with a law degree so
[63]
that's a lot but if we put this in the
[64]
bigger picture there's about 50,000
[66]
students that study a law degree in
[69]
Australia each yeah even more and then
[73]
what's really really crazy about all of
[75]
this is that there's currently only
[76]
about 66,000 practicing solicitors in
[80]
Australia so what we actually have
[82]
happening here is there is a huge huge
[84]
oversupply of legal graduates so it
[87]
means that when you graduate with a law
[90]
degree and you go out to find a job
[91]
there's not a lot of work available as a
[94]
lawyer it's incredibly incredibly
[96]
competitive the government predicts
[98]
maybe there will be 5,000 new jobs
[99]
created in the legal industry over the
[102]
next four years and that's 45,000
[105]
students graduating over the next four
[107]
years for maybe 5,000 new jobs so first
[111]
of all the employment prospects and
[113]
nothing like what I thought and believed
[116]
when I picked the degree so what about
[119]
salaries you know is that a good reason
[121]
to become a lawyer well if you look at
[123]
payscale.com today you they give you the
[125]
average salary that ways in Australia
[127]
earn and the average salary is about
[130]
$70,000 okay the total range that
[134]
payscale.com today you give is anywhere
[137]
from 48 thousand dollars to a hundred
[139]
and seventeen thousand dollars on the
[141]
high end but being frank the realities
[144]
50-minute hours that you're going to
[145]
need to work the amount of time that
[148]
you're spending working as a lawyer the
[150]
returns really aren't there in terms of
[153]
the salary that you're getting in fact
[155]
you'd probably be better off becoming a
[157]
teacher that's right most people don't
[160]
think of teachers being necessarily
[162]
well-paid but when you compare it to
[164]
what a lawyer earns you know teachers
[167]
end up earning in a very similar range
[169]
and there's sort of 70 to 110
[172]
and $20,000 range and guess what you get
[176]
three months holiday each year and
[178]
incredibly rewarding work so something
[181]
to think about here is that you
[182]
shouldn't be studying a law degree it's
[184]
number one you think it's gonna have
[186]
great career prospects and number two
[188]
you shouldn't be studying a law degree
[190]
if you think it's also gonna you know
[193]
provide you with a fantastic salary
[195]
there is a third reason why you
[197]
shouldn't study a law degree and I think
[199]
because there's so many students that
[201]
study it often one of the reasons to
[203]
study a law degree is well you know
[204]
although a Commerce degree not a border
[206]
you know the law degree to it to
[208]
differentiate me or I'll do you know
[209]
what an engineering or a law science and
[212]
engineering arts or science degree and
[214]
I'll add more to differentiate me and if
[216]
so many students are doing the law
[218]
degree fifty thousand students studying
[220]
one right now doing the law degree adds
[222]
no differentiation in fact it's almost
[225]
become like studying an arts degree the
[228]
default thing that you do so there's
[231]
some reasons why you should not study a
[234]
law degree but there are still some very
[237]
good reasons why you should think about
[239]
studying a law degree so let's look at
[241]
what those might be so here's three
[243]
reasons though why you should think
[245]
about doing the law degree and the first
[247]
reason is that a law degree teaches you
[249]
how to think and problem solve the whole
[252]
structure of the entire degree is about
[254]
giving you rural problems and then
[256]
equipping you with legal frameworks and
[259]
principles to be able to look at both
[261]
sides of an issue and that's an
[264]
incredibly powerful problem-solving
[266]
skill that you can take into so many
[268]
different curries across your life so
[271]
studying a law degree can be really
[273]
powerful for that reason the second
[275]
reason is that if you're genuinely
[277]
passionate about the role that law plays
[279]
you know in the world around us and its
[281]
ability to make it different from
[283]
people's lives then you should a hundred
[285]
percent study a law degree because
[287]
you're doing it for the right reasons
[288]
you're doing it because you have a real
[291]
passion for it not because you think
[293]
it'll differentiate yourself or because
[295]
it'll give you a great career with lots
[297]
of pay which we know isn't true
[300]
and the third and final reason why you
[302]
should consider doing a law degree is
[305]
because at the end of the day our our
[307]
lives touch upon the law every day all
[310]
the time so it's an incredibly practical
[312]
degree that can actually improve the
[314]
interactions that you have you know with
[316]
the people around you and in lots of
[318]
different careers and what I mean by
[320]
this is when I was studying my law
[322]
degree and I realized I don't want to be
[323]
a lawyer I decided to pick subjects that
[326]
were really practical advanced contract
[328]
law intellectual property law media law
[331]
subjects that would make a real
[333]
difference no matter what I did in my
[336]
career and in my life so there's three
[339]
powerful reasons why you should pick and
[342]
study a law degree at university now if

a law degree leave them in the comment
