[Music]
[7]
hello and welcome to banfield everyone
[9]
we begin tonight with an answer to a
[11]
question that we've all been asking
[12]
since the news broke yesterday about the
[14]
death of ivana trump
[16]
how on earth could she have died so
[19]
suddenly at just age 73
[23]
well late today the new york medical
[25]
examiner released a ruling on her death
[28]
they say that the first mrs donald trump
[31]
died by accident but the circumstances
[34]
are much more mysterious and much more
[36]
sad
[38]
medical examiner determined that mrs
[39]
trump died of quote blunt impact
[42]
injuries to the torso
[44]
the new york times and others are
[46]
reporting that mrs trump may have fallen
[48]
down the stairs at her upper east side
[51]
manhattan apartment
[52]
medical examiner's office won't comment
[55]
but is likely still looking into how and
[57]
why ivana trump died that way
[60]
there has been plenty of speculation
[62]
however as friends and family of ivana
[64]
trump try to process why a healthy
[67]
former olympian
[69]
at just age 73 could have died so
[72]
suddenly joining me now rob shooter he's
[75]
a former pr agent who now hosts the
[77]
podcast naughty but nice he has followed
[79]
ivana trump for decades and paula
[82]
froelke is our senior story editor at
[83]
the banfield show she spent years as the
[85]
editor
[86]
of page six at the new york post and
[88]
covered ivana trump extensively all
[90]
right uh to the two of you this is such
[92]
sad news and we were all really
[94]
surprised and very saddened by you know
[97]
this story yesterday no one was
[98]
expecting that ivana was going to die so
[100]
soon but
[101]
paula the post is reporting a lot of
[105]
unique and interesting details in the
[107]
lead-up to discovering mrs trump what
[110]
are they saying
[111]
well they're saying basically that the
[112]
last time anyone actually saw her was
[114]
wednesday night when she left her
[116]
apartment to go get soup from her
[119]
favorite restaurant altizzi she goes
[121]
back everyone thinks it's normal and
[123]
then on thursday her home health aide
[126]
and her housekeeper knocked on the door
[129]
no answer they called her no answer so
[132]
they called the super the super couldn't
[133]
get in because the door was double
[135]
locked so they got the maintenance guy
[137]
to finally open the apartment and that's
[140]
where they found her at the bottom of
[141]
the stairs she had a spilled cup of
[143]
coffee next to her and it's just so sad
[148]
it's extremely sad and rob you know i'm
[151]
assuming that the tributes are going to
[153]
start pouring in pretty soon but
[155]
um but ivana trump was beloved and she
[158]
is a a fixture of the new york scene a
[161]
fixture of the new york tabloid
[163]
headlines that's for sure what are some
[164]
of the other stories that are
[165]
circulating right now about everything
[167]
that led up to this including the
[168]
incident itself
[170]
yeah people are just shocked by this i
[172]
can't imagine i can't remember a time in
[175]
new york when she wasn't around her
[177]
husband went off to florida and also to
[179]
to dc her ex-husband she stayed here she
[182]
was a new yorker she was here during the
[184]
pandemic and i think you have to
[186]
remember that before paris hilton or
[189]
even kim kardashian that she was in that
[192]
space and to be that famous with no
[194]
social media back then the way she did
[197]
it is by going out every single night
[200]
she was at all the parties the charity
[202]
events it didn't matter if there were
[204]
fancy events like the met ball uptown or
[207]
even drag bars on the lower east side
[209]
she would be there pretty much every
[211]
night so i think she touched so many
[214]
different people in new york and today
[216]
or feeling a little bit sad about that
[219]
and then of course you know we didn't
[220]
see her for a while but when donald
[221]
trump uh you know became the occupant of
[224]
the oval office the news broke that she
[226]
had a regular
[228]
open phone line
[229]
to the oval office that was true she
[231]
spoke with him regularly he offered her
[233]
the ambassadorship to czechoslovakia her
[235]
native
[236]
country she said no she wanted her life
[238]
to stay as it was but paula there are
[241]
some reports that her health may have
[243]
been failing some of her friends
[245]
reporting that she had a terrible hip
[247]
problem which we're trying to put two
[249]
and two together as to why she might
[250]
have fallen if that's indeed what
[252]
happened but what do we know about that
[254]
well you know here's the deal ash
[256]
for the last couple years she's only
[258]
been seen in photographs holding onto an
[261]
arm of an aide and as we all know once
[264]
you get to a certain age it's like judge
[266]
judy always said it's the falls that'll
[268]
get you and you have to be real careful
[270]
now listen i have been on the boat but i
[272]
do know that rob shooter has been in the
[275]
house and rob you were telling me a
[277]
little bit about what those stairs were
[278]
like
[279]
yeah that treacherous so it really is an
[282]
old old it's a magnificent building she
[285]
has the entire entire town house it's
[288]
worth multi millions of dollars however
[291]
it wasn't as renovated as up to as up to
[294]
speed as what you might think so now
[296]
people are speculating too those those
[298]
stairs were always very dangerous to the
[301]
carpet on those stairs were a little bit
[303]
worn too she was having trouble with
[305]
mobility so we're putting it all
[307]
together and obviously the outcome is
[309]
something that nobody nobody wanted
[313]
no no one expected either paula um you
[316]
know we didn't escape the images of her
[318]
youngest son eric who was outside the
[321]
apartment in new york city out on the
[323]
sidewalk yesterday i mean it's really
[325]
just heartbreaking to think that that
[326]
the three kids would get that news and i
[328]
think donald as well getting that news
[330]
would be
[331]
um really tragic but eric was pretty
[333]
close to her oh yeah eric and his wife
[335]
laura were out there immediately and by
[338]
the way i bet donald's pretty devastated
[340]
she was his confidant i mean yeah she
[343]
was pretty mad at him right after the
[344]
divorce but like a year later they were
[346]
back to being buds and raising those
[348]
kids together
[349]
and he talked to her all the time and
[352]
she was kind of the one who knew him
[354]
when who built him and he really
[357]
respected her judgment and she called
[359]
him on everything and he took the advice
[361]
she was literally the only person he
[363]
would listen to at the
[364]
time one of the things that eric said
[367]
out on the sidewalk to the reporters uh
[369]
who were all there obviously wondering
[371]
what how could this have happened uh all
[373]
he would say is that it was a very sad
[374]
day which is an understatement for a
[377]
youngest son um
[379]
so so rather saying no foul play uh
[382]
they're likely you know investigating
[383]
somewhat further until this this case is
[385]
closed and perhaps it'll stay
[387]
a family matter but do we know anything
[389]
yet about how um ivana will be
[391]
memorialized it's hard to believe that
[393]
there isn't going to be something really
[395]
big
[396]
for the woman who was the plaza hotel
[398]
for the woman who was the front page of
[400]
the new york post in the daily news
[402]
for decades um what do we know about
[404]
plans to memorialize her
[406]
we don't know anything yet i spoke to
[408]
her long time publicist just a few hours
[411]
ago and nothing has been yet finalized
[414]
but you're absolutely right she wouldn't
[416]
want to go out without a big fanfare
[419]
without lots of celebrities her favorite
[422]
drink whenever i was with her she always
[424]
drank berkeley chloe so i imagine
[426]
there's going to be lots of that pause
[428]
so i think there'll be a what what did
[430]
you say what what was your drink that
[431]
she drank
[433]
fancy champagne verbally chloe
[439]
i suppose it would stand to reason verve
[442]
a very fancy champagne with a fancy name
[445]
for a woman who
[446]
sometimes gilded the lily i'll be honest
[448]
i mean she literally by the way she
[450]
literally builded the lily
[453]
in many hotels and apartments
[457]
yeah there was there was a lot of gold
[458]
in the trump apartments uh back in the
[460]
day and and rob for those who didn't see
[462]
the show last night we we took a tribute
[464]
down the memory lane of the of the
[466]
headlines of uh donald and ivana trump
[469]
and listen it was that it was the height
[471]
of glitz the height of glamour they were
[474]
the 80s power couple 80s 90s couple and
[477]
then this happened the the famous split
[479]
between them when he cheated on her with
[481]
marla maples and it was literally played
[483]
out in those tabloids relive that just
[486]
as a as a summary for those who didn't
[488]
see it last night
[490]
it was amazing time so each of them took
[493]
a different newspaper here in new york
[496]
there's two newspapers back then they're
[497]
still around today but they were much
[499]
more powerful back then and every day it
[501]
felt like they were going at each other
[504]
on the cover of these newspapers it was
[506]
delicious like you would wake up in the
[508]
morning and you'd want to know what the
[511]
other one was saying this went on for
[513]
months and months and months and then
[514]
after it was over she didn't go away she
[518]
reinvented herself she went on qvc she
[520]
started a skincare line she started her
[523]
own jewelry collection she was believed
[525]
to be worth about 100 million dollars in
[527]
her own right after the divorce so
[530]
people are even saying that she was out
[532]
there doing things for women
[534]
that maybe hadn't been done before at
[537]
least to this sort of degree so she
[539]
never ever went away and as paula said
[542]
it was remarkable
[543]
only she could remain friends with a man
[547]
that came at her in the tabloids over
[550]
and over and over again they remained
[552]
friends in fact her last wedding her
[554]
fourth wedding was at mar-a-lago it was
[556]
at his estate he gave her away which is
[559]
crazy it was very woody allen you know
[562]
let's fight in the courtroom and have
[564]
dinner at night
[566]
not not quite what yelling but but paula
[568]
i do want you to answer to one thing and
[570]
we have to wrap it up and that is that
[572]
at the beginning of the trump presidency
[574]
um you know the the big tabloid story
[577]
was that um ivana said that she was the
[580]
real first lady and that was a pretty
[582]
uncomfortable comment and melania
[584]
had to deal with that do we know how
[587]
melania is dealing with this has there
[590]
been boo has there been any
[592]
leaked information any you know sort of
[594]
page six insider information about how
[598]
melania has handled the death of someone
[600]
who donald clearly uh still cared for
[602]
deeply so here's the deal we don't
[604]
actually know but i can tell you what i
[606]
would bet and i would bet it would be
[608]
just another day for her melania and
[611]
ivana were diametrically opposite ivana
[615]
was fiery she was feisty she was speak
[618]
your mind melania's very icy cold
[622]
you know and they were never friends
[623]
they they were not friends
[626]
also because
[629]
new wife but that's that's not normal
[631]
you know to be friends with your
[632]
ex-husband's wife isn't usual but but
[634]
like i said i am i think it's normal but
[637]
i can understand how it could be testy
[639]
there were a lot of ex-wives too um
[642]
thank you to both of you you know i want
[643]
to put a couple pictures up just as we
[644]
say good goodbye to this topic of of
[647]
donald trump because we really just we
[648]
lived her through pictures so if our
[650]
control room could just put up another
[652]
couple of pictures of ivana just uh just
[654]
to sort of say you know how sad this
[656]
really is that we lost her at 73 years
[659]
old and i do want people to remember
[661]
that she was an olympian she was a
[663]
downhill ski racer which was why i loved
[666]
her she was an olympic downhill ski
[669]
racer for czechoslovakia that's how i
[671]
bonded with her during one of our
[673]
interviews um but she was also just a
[676]
really tough cookie so
[679]
i hope she goes out like rivers unlike a
[682]
big parade down fifth avenue maybe some
[685]
drag queens
[690]
i'm going to say happy weekend to you
[692]
and happy friday
[693]
and and thank you for being here uh
[695]
paula i'm going to ask you to stick
[696]
around we've got some work for you to do
[698]
a little later in the hour thank you to
[699]
