Top 5 PhD Employers In Biotech/Biopharma - YouTube

Channel: Cheeky Scientist

[3]
- Hello and welcome to another
[4]
whiteboard Wednesday training.
[7]
I'm Isaiah Hankel, Cheeky Scientist,
[9]
and today we're talking about the top five
[10]
employers for PhDs in the biotech
[16]
and biopharmaceutical industries.
[18]
This is based on data from a large-scale survey
[22]
done by Fortune magazine.
[24]
Now, there is one caveat to this.
[26]
Only the largest companies were polled
[28]
because they had enough employees
[30]
and easy enough access
[32]
to those employees to poll them.
[34]
I do want to make it clear
[35]
that if you're looking for a job in industry,
[38]
especially as a PhD, don't just consider
[40]
the top companies that everybody has heard of.
[43]
You want to also consider small,
[46]
"small", to midsize companies.
[48]
Now, in industry small is not the same
[50]
as it is in academia.
[52]
A small academic lab could have five people,
[55]
could have two people, could have one person really.
[58]
But in industry small means
[60]
a hundred to a thousand employees.
[62]
Midsize means a thousand
[63]
to several thousands employees.
[65]
And large of course are the large companies
[68]
like some of those companies we're gonna talk about
[70]
that have tens of thousands employees,
[72]
sometimes more.
[74]
That's important to realize.
[75]
If you're looking for a job,
[76]
do not exclude small or midsize companies.
[79]
Look for those companies,
[80]
google them just by searching
[82]
in your location small biotech companies,
[86]
in your location midsize pharmaceutical companies.
[89]
All right, so what are the top five companies?
[90]
And these are the top five companies
[92]
for PhDs to work for, as in the PhD
[94]
gets a job and they're happy.
[96]
I can tell you in our Cheeky Scientist Association
[99]
we have over 4,000 members now
[101]
and those who get jobs,
[104]
they go one or two directions.
[105]
They're in a hurry to get a job
[107]
and they just get a job based on the job title
[109]
or salary or the brand of the company
[111]
as in how big the name is of the company,
[114]
and sometimes they realize later
[116]
that their company is not aligned with their values,
[120]
is not aligned with their purpose.
[122]
This survey showed that PhDs who are happy
[125]
and people in general who are happy
[126]
that get jobs at these companies,
[129]
they're happy because their values
[132]
are aligned with the company's values.
[134]
Their purpose is aligned
[137]
with the company's purpose.
[138]
So they're onboard with what
[139]
the company's trying to achieve,
[141]
with the company culture as a whole.
[143]
Okay, those two things came up
[144]
over and over again in the survey,
[146]
purpose, values.
[148]
This is why in our Cheeky Scientist Association
[150]
we have something called the transition plan
[153]
that helps you figure out
[153]
what your professional values are,
[155]
what is your professional purpose,
[157]
and helps you build a professional lifestyle
[159]
that you want and then fit a company
[162]
to that lifestyle, not the other way around.
[165]
Don't join a company, become a team member
[167]
and then try to fit your lifestyle
[168]
and your value to that company.
[170]
That's gonna be a disaster.
[172]
All right, so what are the top five companies?
[173]
Number one, and I don't think these
[175]
are in any particular order,
[176]
these are just the top five overall
[178]
as reported by this Fortune survey.
[181]
Number one is Horizon Pharmaceuticals.
[184]
97% of employees reported that they were
[187]
very happy with the company,
[189]
specifically with the company's communication.
[192]
It might seem that something like communication
[194]
at the company isn't enough
[197]
to make it a great place to work for,
[198]
one of the best places for PhDs to work for,
[201]
but it does.
[202]
Over and over again there's lots of studies
[204]
that show what will make you happy
[206]
working at a company is transparency,
[209]
how transparent is that company
[211]
in terms of what their corporate strategies are,
[214]
what your role is.
[215]
If you go into a company, there's no transparency,
[217]
no communication, it feels like everybody's your boss,
[220]
you don't know what you're supposed to do,
[222]
you don't know what the company's goals are,
[223]
you don't feel like you're able to communicate
[225]
your needs or your desires to the company,
[228]
you're gonna be miserable.
[229]
When you see 97% of the employees
[231]
at Horizon Pharmaceuticals are happy
[234]
with the communication, it's no wonder
[236]
that it's one of the best places to work for.
[238]
Number two, Genetech.
[241]
Especially if you're in the life sciences,
[243]
if you're a STEM PhD, you know the name Genetech.
[246]
Genetech is really well-known because
[249]
they're kind of an outlier in industry.
[251]
For the most part when it comes
[252]
to your publications in academia,
[255]
they don't matter to most of the companies
[256]
you're gonna be applying to.
[258]
They simply don't matter.
[258]
There're a select few companies like Genetech
[261]
where publications do matter.
[262]
This isn't a good or bad thing,
[264]
it just means that Genetech's run
[265]
almost as an extension of academia.
[268]
Like if you blurred a typical industry company
[271]
with a typical academic institution,
[273]
put them together, the child of that
[277]
would be Genetech.
[278]
Why are people happy at Genetech?
[279]
90%, a little bit more than 90%,
[284]
say that there's great challenges at Genetech.
[286]
In other words, they're doing
[288]
very innovative things that are challenging
[290]
and they enjoy the work.
[291]
For PhDs this matters.
[293]
One of our core needs as a PhD
[294]
is to do innovative work.
[296]
In fact, to get a PhD, you can't just
[299]
master the field, you have to push the field forward.
[301]
So believe it or not, whether you know it or not,
[303]
you need that challenge.
[305]
Number three, and I love this company,
[307]
Regeneron Pharamceuticals.
[309]
93% of their employees report
[311]
excellent communication, but 93% also report
[316]
excellent support from their bosses.
[318]
They have an incredible leadership team at Regeneron.
[321]
What I love about Regeneron is Regeneron
[323]
got to where it was because it had
[325]
a PhD as its CEO for a long time,
[328]
and that PhD just did an incredible job
[331]
building up their company.
[332]
If you look at their stock,
[333]
the company's doing very well.
[334]
In our Cheeky Scientist Association
[336]
we actually have an individual
[338]
who is an associate director at Regeneron.
[340]
It's been an amazing experience
[342]
watching her climb in that company
[345]
and hire more associates into that company.
[349]
Regeneron is a great company to work for.
[351]
I highly recommend checking it out
[352]
if you haven't, they're based in New York.
[354]
Number four, AbbVie.
[356]
93% report that they love the culture
[360]
and atmosphere at AbbVie.
[361]
They say they have fun, they like the way
[363]
that things are set up.
[364]
And culture is not just what you wear to work,
[367]
but can you show up when you want to
[370]
as long as you get your work done,
[372]
or do you have to be there at a certain time?
[374]
What are the internal processes,
[375]
the internal power structures?
[377]
This is culture, it's a much bigger thing
[379]
than you might be thinking.
[380]
At AbbVie they love the culture.
[382]
Same thing with Illumina.
[383]
95% report loving the culture.
[385]
I love Illumina too.
[387]
It's a great company.
[388]
They're doing very innovative things.
[390]
I recommend checking them out too,
[391]
if you haven't heard of Illumina.
[393]
Also 97% of the employees said that they're proud
[396]
to be a team member at Illumina.
[398]
That really stuck out at me.
[400]
When you work for a company to have
[402]
that kind of, that feeling like you like
[405]
belonging to the company, like being known
[407]
as a team member at that company,
[408]
it's a big thing.
[409]
So check out these five companies
[411]
but don't stop there.
[412]
Look at other companies, small companies,
[414]
midsize companies.
[415]
Make sure you're finding the company
[416]
that is a good fit for you.
[418]
Don't just try to fit yourself into any company.
[421]
Don't try to just change who you are.
[422]
Try to first define what you want professionally,
[426]
what your professional values are,
[427]
your professional purposes,
[430]
what professional lifestyle you want,
[431]
and then fit a company to that.
[433]
