Dave Ramsey: Student loan forgiveness is a scam - YouTube

Channel: Fox Business

[0]
college is expensive super expensive and
[3]
many families have felt the pinch of
[5]
rising tuition cost one new study from
[8]
u.s news and world reports shows
[9]
in-state tuition and fees at public
[11]
universities skyrocketed 211 percent
[15]
over the last 20 years this as the
[17]
department of education announces it's
[19]
cancelling more than 11.5 billion
[21]
dollars in student loans joining me now
[23]
is personal finance expert best-selling
[25]
author dave ramsey dave i get it oh the
[29]
federal government's going to cancel my
[30]
debt so i can just me and my family we
[33]
could just take on oodles of debt so i
[35]
go to college and it'll get washed away
[37]
right
[38]
yeah right so the 11.5 billion was
[41]
normal course of business if you become
[42]
disabled
[44]
you have always gotten your student
[46]
loans canceled and that's a cancellation
[47]
program that's always been there and has
[49]
always worked
[50]
the other thing is if you got defrauded
[52]
by a school that went out of business
[53]
you get that student loan canceled
[55]
that's always been there and it's always
[57]
worked the cancellation that they're all
[59]
bragging about that doesn't work is the
[62]
public service student loan forgiveness
[64]
and uh 98 of the people that apply for
[67]
that so far have not gotten
[70]
forgiveness only 2
[72]
that's known as a scam
[74]
it is victoria jump in
[77]
yeah you know look i am right in the
[79]
middle of this conversation because i
[81]
have a child that just graduated from
[83]
university of texas i have a freshman at
[85]
nyu so if there's a place i can go sign
[88]
up for loan forgiveness tell me and i
[90]
will be the first in line i just don't
[93]
see this happening but i think what's
[94]
important too is that we need to look at
[97]
what the
[98]
future of a four-year traditional
[100]
college looks like after the last year
[103]
and a half and the changes that we've
[104]
seen in the way people work i'm not so
[107]
sure that that traditional college
[108]
experience is what people are actually
[110]
going to do going forward i've never
[112]
seen so many online college commercials
[115]
um as i have in the last six months or
[117]
so so i don't know if that's going to
[119]
shift the way people approach college
[121]
but the cost is tremendous and people
[123]
need to start saving early and i'm sure
[125]
dave has some
[127]
suggestions on how they can do that well
[129]
and dave i always and i'm not when i say
[132]
this i've said this on air before and
[134]
i'm not joking
[135]
if i had to do it all over again i
[137]
wouldn't go to a four-year school i
[139]
would probably be a plumber today
[141]
it's a you're your own you know what
[143]
it's a great trade you're your own boss
[146]
there is always work
[149]
and you can kind of work when you want
[150]
to but that's part of your advice
[153]
well my friend mike rowe agrees we both
[156]
know that the trades have been
[158]
overlooked because america put its nose
[160]
in the air and snubbed anyone who didn't
[162]
get a four-year degree for the last five
[165]
generations uh and it became a thing
[167]
that if you didn't go to college you
[168]
weren't going to be successful and then
[170]
under the heading of that we kind of
[171]
went crazy and said anything you study
[174]
at any price at any college
[177]
and you will become successful so you
[179]
can get a degree for 225 000 left-handed
[181]
puppetry and you will automatically be a
[184]
broke barista
[186]
and i've i've met people like that who
[188]
are angry
[190]
at the government that they have debt
[192]
i'm like well did you you paid a quarter
[195]
million dollars for a degree that
[198]
doesn't give you any marketable skill
[200]
and you're mad at
[202]
not yourself
[204]
the problem is we got we got 18 year
[206]
olds making adult decisions you don't
[208]
sign an 18 year old up for a 300 000
[211]
mortgage you don't sign a 17 year old up
[212]
for that without some guidance and mom
[214]
and dad are standing back and going oh
[216]
they're adults let them do whatever the
[217]
high school counselor is going well pay
[219]
for college whatever however you got to
[220]
do it go do it and then we say well go
[222]
to a famous school instead of an
[224]
affordable school and so let's double
[227]
down on how stupid we're going to be
[228]
here people mock me online because i got
[231]
a degree in art history but my college
[233]
wake forest at the time was 7 500 a year
[236]
and i was lucky my family my
[238]
grandparents and my parents paid for it
[240]
but my father also put his boot on my
[242]
butt when i graduated and said you're
[244]
not getting it coming in the house
[246]
here's 20 don't call me if you get
[248]
married you're on your own i am a nobody
[251]
i can't get you a job anywhere so that's
[253]
where i was i got a degree
[255]
a cheap one but i had to go out there
[258]
and hustle dave you have a new
[260]
documentary out it's called borrowed
[261]
future can you tell us about it
[264]
it is um it's going to stir up a holy
[266]
ruckus dagan there's going to be some
[268]
people really upset with this when they
[270]
watch it because we're going to expose
[271]
what the government has done here
[273]
we're going to expose what higher
[274]
education has done here and it has been
[277]
a culture-wide con
[280]
and it's out of control and the victims
[283]
are 18 year olds in this and it's it's
[285]
sad i talk to them every day they're
[288]
delaying having kids they're delaying
[290]
getting married they're delaying buying
[291]
houses because they're swamped and
[294]
covered up and overwhelmed with his debt
[296]
that they signed up and did what
[297]
everybody told them to do get an
[299]
education at any cost and it doesn't
[300]
even matter what you study or where you
[302]
go to school and so
[304]
borrowed future will scare you straight
[306]
you got a 17 year old you've got a 13
[308]
year old
[309]
you anywhere in your life you need to
[311]
watch this documentary it will rock your
[314]
world
[316]
that you should go to a four-year school
[319]
cost doesn't matter is the biggest lie
[321]
sold to kids across this country for
[324]
generations it is it is and i i would
[326]
say go get a four-year degree if you're
[328]
going to study business or marketing or
[330]
communications or something right
[332]
education is important but overpaying
[334]
for education it's an irony of ironies
[337]
that in america were stupid
[339]
about education thank you i mean that's
[341]
just that's ridiculous so you can watch
[343]
this on google play you can watch amazon
[345]
prime apple tv anywhere you want to see
[347]
it we want you to come see it thank you
[349]
dave great to see you dave ramsey we'll
[351]
be right back
