Hey, it’s Marie Forleo and you are watching MarieTV, the place to be to create a business
[20]
and a life that you love.
[22]
And this is Q&A Tuesday.
[25]
Today’s question comes from Donna and Donna writes:
[28]
“Hi Marie.
[29]
Like others I binged on MarieTV when I first found it.
[32]
Loved the content and the humor.
[33]
Thank you.
[34]
Although I’m not currently an entrepreneur, I’m proud to be working in my family’s
[37]
business.
[38]
So my question is not on entrepreneurship, but intrapreneurship.
[41]
My family’s company is very successful, always growing, but the way we operate is
[47]
old school.
[48]
Computer systems are outdated and the company’s culture reflects the attitudes of older generations.
[53]
Things are changing though.
[54]
We’re hiring more millennials, creative marketing is becoming a lot more essential,
[58]
and opportunities for sustainable business practices are presenting themselves.
[62]
What kind of advice would you give to an intrapreneur, or someone who works within a company, who
[68]
wants to turn his or her ideas into reality?
[71]
I’d love to start a social responsibility program or figure out ways to reduce waste
[76]
within the business.
[77]
Though I think these changes are gonna be super important in the future, not everybody
[81]
sees them as a priority right now.
[84]
How can you go about changing a company culture when you’re not the one calling the shots?
[89]
Thanks, Donna.”
[90]
Donna, this is a fantastic question.
[93]
Starting and running your own business is not the only way to create change in this
[96]
world.
[97]
And I think we’ve all been hearing that phrase, intrapreneur, a lot more lately.
[101]
And that’s because it’s vital that each of us brings that proactive, leadership spirit
[106]
to everything that we do.
[108]
So I’ve got 5 steps that’ll help you and give you the best chance to get your ideas
[114]
heard and implemented.
[115]
And to make sure that you remember them, we’re gonna do something called a little Kanya karaoke.
[125]
Step one is be a goal digger.
[140]
First you need to do some goal diggin’ and pinpoint exactly what your company is trying
[145]
to achieve.
[146]
Here’s why.
[147]
It’s really hard to influence change from within an organization unless you understand
[152]
the current and future goals of that organization.
[155]
So find out: what are they trying to achieve over the next 12, 24, 36 months?
[160]
What’s the company’s number one priority?
[162]
What’s their number two priority?
[164]
And so on.
[165]
Step number two is you wanna pick one idea that makes them harder, better, faster, stronger.
[177]
You have a lot of ideas like social responsibility and reducing waste and updating your technology.
[183]
But which one could help the company reach one of their top priorities the fastest?
[188]
So now that you know their goals, it’s all about figuring out how you can align what
[192]
you want with what they want.
[195]
Right?
[196]
Make sense?
[197]
So this next step is really gonna help you sell them on it.
[228]
Step number three is write a power proposal.
[231]
So now that you know your idea and how it aligns with the company’s goals, you’ve
[235]
got to whip up a little proposal to present to the head honchos.
[238]
This should help.
[240]
First start with your idea, the problem it solves, and how it supports the company reaching
[244]
its goals.
[246]
Then bullet out the big benefits, so increased profit or revenue, savings.
[251]
Remember saving money is like making money.
[252]
Maybe it’s productivity or employee retention, PR opportunities, or whatever you feel could
[258]
be the most important benefits of this idea.
[261]
Include highlights from any research you’ve done, so stats, impact studies, examples from
[266]
other companies.
[267]
This can be the muscle behind your passion.
[269]
And an action plan.
[272]
Include what it’ll take to make this idea come to life.
[274]
Think about money, time, resources, staff approval, etcetera.
[278]
Show the next steps and, of course, include that you’ll spearhead this and see it through.
[283]
You don't want to approach them and say, “Here’s a great idea, now you go do it,” because
[286]
that leaves them holding the bag.
[289]
These are all the things that can make me say yes when someone comes to me with an idea
[292]
within my company.
[294]
So do your best to keep it short and sweet and ideally if you can, make it all on one
[297]
page.
[298]
Step number four, turn up the lights.
[302]
Hit it.
[306]
Once you’ve got this proposal, turn up the lights for the meeting.
[317]
Really set a positive stage.
[319]
And that means highlighting what your company is already doing great.
[323]
Realize that change is hard and nobody wants some youngin’ coming in and saying, “Here’s
[327]
all the things that we’re doing wrong,” and, “Y’all are dinosaurs and you need
[330]
to change.”
[331]
Not a great persuasion technique.
[333]
So listen to Ri-Ri, turn up the lights, and get everyone present to what the company is
[338]
already doing great.
[339]
Do you have amazing customer service?
[341]
Do you have awesome profit margins?
[342]
I don't know what it is, but focus on it and it'll help people be a lot more receptive
[347]
to your ideas.
[348]
Step number five is throw your hands up in the sky.
[351]
Hit it.
[377]
When you do make your pitch, do it with your full enthusiasm, with your whole heart, and,
[383]
remember, at the end of the day you just have to detach and throw your hands up in the sky.
[388]
You know why?
[389]
Because whether an intrapreneur or an entrepreneur, not every idea gets brought to fruition.
[395]
Not everything gets a green light.
[396]
But that doesn't mean you should stop sharing your ideas.
[399]
Keep going and one of them will work.
[402]
You have to keep a positive attitude and you have to say “I go’s for mine, I got’s
[406]
to shine, I’mma throw my hands up in the sky.”
[409]
Right?
[410]
Just do what Kanye does.
[412]
And if anyone questions you or says, “Who do you think you are to propose this?”
[417]
remember this tweetable.
[418]
Of course, courtesy of Kanye.
[420]
I’m a creative genius and there’s no other way to word it.
[426]
