Money Transfer Explained - YouTube

Alright this is a public service
[2]
announcement for all my friends around
[4]
the world who need to move money from
[6]
country to country. Perhaps you worked
[9]
overseas for a bit and you saved some
[10]
money and now you need to bring it back
[12]
home or maybe you're moving somewhere
[15]
and you need to put a deposit on a flat
[17]
or buy some furniture and you need to
[19]
bring the money over before your first
[21]
paycheck arrives. So how do you do it?
[23]
How do you transfer the money?
[25]
Well a lot of people end up milking the
[27]
ATM and that is the worst way to do it. It is
[30]
super expensive. So the best way that I've
[32]
found to transfer money over is to use a
[35]
money transfer service. If you don't want
[37]
to watch the entire video just check the
[38]
links in the description. I am linking to
[41]
3 money transfer services that I've
[43]
used that I like and you can just check
[46]
them out already.
[47]
Now before we dive too deep you need
[50]
to understand that no matter which
[52]
technique you use to move the money you
[54]
will end up paying. Nobody's going to move
[56]
your money overseas for free. You end up
[58]
paying via fees and you pay via the
[61]
spread. The spread is the part most
[64]
people don't check and it's by far the
[67]
most expensive. So what is the spread?
[69]
Well, the spread is the difference
[71]
between the actual mid-market rates and
[75]
the rate that you'll end up getting for
[78]
your transaction.
[79]
Let's take an example that's easy to
[81]
understand. Let's say you want to move
[83]
five thousand dollars from Australia to
[86]
Canada and that today's exchange rate is
[89]
a very easy 1 Australian dollar equals
[92]
1 Canadian dollar. First there's the
[95]
obvious milking the ATM. Australian
[97]
bankcard. Canadian ATM. Pop the card in,
[100]
get five hundred dollars out. Your bank
[103]
will charge you perhaps four dollars in
[105]
fees and the ATM, because you're using a
[108]
foreign card, will also charge you four
[110]
dollars in fees.
[111]
So that's eight dollars total fees. When
[113]
you look at the small print on the
[115]
receipt you realize that you're not
[117]
getting the exchange rate of the day
[119]
which was 1 Australian dollar equals
[122]
1 Canadian dollar. You're getting a
[124]
different exchange rate. The exchange rate you're
[126]
getting is 1 Australian dollar equals
[129]
94 Canadian cents so what happened
[132]
there?
[132]
Well the spread is
[133]
what happened there. Your bank is
[135]
charging you a six percent spread. So how
[138]
much did it cost to move $500 then? Well, we
[141]
paid eight dollars in fees plus six
[143]
percent spread which means that the total
[145]
cost of the transaction was 38$.
[148]
Now remember we didn't want to
[150]
move $500 we wanted to move $5,000. This
[153]
means that if we went back to the ATM
[155]
10 times, because of the daily
[157]
500$ limit, the total true
[160]
cost of our transactions would be 380$.
[165]
That's insanely expensive! So there must be
[167]
another way.
[168]
So the other obvious way is to use an
[171]
international wire transfer at your bank.
[174]
Now I looked at my own bank and they charge a
[176]
$22 flat fee plus the same 6%
[180]
spread. That means in this case that the
[181]
total cost of the transaction would be 322$.
[184]
So it's a bit cheaper than the
[187]
ATM but still very expensive. So that
[191]
brings us to our third option, my
[193]
favorite, the cheapest, which is using an
[195]
international money transfer service. The
[198]
way these services work is they have bank
[200]
accounts all over the world and you
[202]
transfer locally and they do the
[204]
International part of the transfer. So
[207]
the first one is XE.com. XE charges a
[210]
1.5% spread and no fees so the total
[214]
true cost of the transaction would be $75.
[216]
The second service is TransferWise.
[220]
TransferWise charges a 0.7% fee
[222]
and no spread so the total
[225]
true cost of the transaction would be 35$
[227]
And finally CurrencyFair
[230]
charges a 0.56% spread
[233]
and no fee so the total
[236]
true transaction costs would be 27$.
[238]
Now that's insane
[241]
when you think about it! If you compare
[243]
milking the ATM at 380$
[245]
dollars with the cheapest money transfer
[247]
service at $27 that's the massive
[251]
massive difference.
[252]
Alright! So money transfer services are
[254]
cheap but how do you use them?
[255]
Well the first thing you need to do is
[258]
open an account with them. Usually that
[260]
means going on their website and sending
[261]
them some photos or scans of
[263]
of ID documents. Most of the time
[266]
you need two pieces of ID. For instance a
[268]
passport and a driver's license and
[270]
proof of address like a recent utility
[273]
bill or anything with your name and your
[275]
current address on it. Once your
[277]
account is up and running
[278]
how do you move money around? Well you
[280]
need to set up a trade.
[281]
So you go on the service's website or
[284]
mobile app and set up the trade by
[286]
telling the system I want to move that
[288]
much money from country A to bank
[290]
account XYZ in country B. Now once you
[294]
set up the trade that system will give
[296]
you important local bank detail
[299]
information for you to transfer the
[301]
money. So the next step is simply to go
[303]
on your own bank's website, the same
[305]
website you use to check your balance or
[307]
pay your bills, and do a local transfer
[310]
to the money transfer service. And that's
[313]
it!
[314]
Now all you have to do is wait for the
[315]
money to show up at the other end!
[317]
Alright so out of the three money
[318]
transfer services that we looked at: XE
[321]
TransferWise and CurrencyFair which one
[324]
do I recommend? Well it's simple I
[326]
recommend all three of them. Setting
[328]
up an account with them is free -- it's a
[329]
bit of work -- but once you've
[331]
done it once it's good for ever and
[333]
you're good to go. So whenever you move
[337]
just pick the service that's giving you the easiest and fastest and
[340]
the cheapest rate. Also if you look in
[342]
the description I put a few referral
[345]
links that gives you a free transfer
[346]
with Transferwise and a ree transfer
[349]
with CurrencyFair plus some bonus cash
[352]
if you transfer above a certain amount.
[354]
So really if you subscribe to both of
[357]
them you will get two free transfers
[359]
instead of just one.
[360]
So freebie why not? So that's it I hope
[363]
you found this video useful give me a
[365]
thumbs up if you liked it subscribe to
[367]
the channel if you have any questions
[369]
put them in the comments below and I'll
[371]

[373]
out.
[374]

[376]
I'll see you later!
