Welcome bags, Genius.
[2]
I've worked from home for a long
[3]
time.
[4]
My first corporate job after
[6]
I got my master's degree, I worked
[8]
remote.
[9]
I worked from home about 80 percent
[11]
of the time when I opened my own
[13]
business.
[14]
I continued to work from home.
[16]
And it's an adjustment.
[17]
When you work in an office.
[19]
It's easier to create a routine.
[21]
You have to wake up at a certain
[22]
time to start your morning commute.
[25]
When you're on that daily journey,
[27]
you see a series of the same people
[29]
every day.
[31]
Same with after work, lunch
[34]
and special occasions.
[36]
If you've been used to that routine,
[38]
or even if you already worked
[40]
from home, working from home
[42]
in this unprecedented time.
[44]
Totally different.
[46]
My name is Vivian Olodun.
[48]
I'm an author and an entrepreneur.
[50]
I wrote the interactive journal
[51]
Stumbling Through Adulthood
[53]
in this video.
[54]
I'm going to talk about key changes
[56]
to consider when you make the
[58]
transition to work from home.

[68]
Living in South Florida.
[69]
It's normal to have a contingency
[71]
plan to work from home.
[73]
We have weather changes that can put
[75]
the city down for days
[77]
or weeks.
[79]
The same is true for many places
[81]
around the globe.
[81]
Natural disasters like hurricanes,
[84]
snowstorms, earthquakes and
[86]
the like.
[87]
Normal everyday changes like
[89]
relocation, family changes,
[91]
medical conditions are all
[93]
reasons to work from home
[96]
at the moment.
[97]
It's a global pandemic that has
[99]
many of us behind closed doors
[101]
working from our home office.
[103]
My business, Flourish Media is
[105]
a marketing, training and
[106]
development company that helps small
[108]
businesses in transition.
[111]
So we weren't surprised when the
[112]
Miami tourism community hired
[114]
us to host a region-wide
[116]
webinar to help small
[118]
businesses and hospitality,
[120]
tourism, and the arts.
[123]
Build a plan to work from home.
[126]
We created a custom workbook
[128]
for those businesses and you can
[130]
find an altered copy in
[132]
the description box that you can
[133]
download for free.
[135]
Let's break down working from home
[137]
into five different considerations.
[140]
Policies, equipment,
[143]
internal communication,
[145]
external communication
[147]
and a family plan.
[149]
The first thing to consider is
[151]
a written set of policies about
[153]
working from home.
[154]
If you don't have one, we included
[156]
a sample inside of your workbook.
[159]
Things change quickly.
[161]
Write down what's happening so you
[162]
can use it for later.
[164]
What about the equipment?
[165]
You and your staff need stuff
[168]
in order to keep the business
[169]
afloat.
[170]
The next question is who's supposed
[172]
to supply it and who's supposed to
[173]
buy it?
[174]
Inside of your policies and in your
[176]
internal communication, you
[178]
should let your team know
[180]
where their equipment is supposed to
[182]
come from.
[183]
If you're moving it from your
[184]
existing office in disseminating
[187]
to the staff, you would need
[189]
to have some type of checkout policy
[191]
and insurance on those items in case
[194]
they get broken.
[195]
Where should it be stored?
[197]
The next thing to consider is
[199]
internal communication.
[200]
Your staff that's used to all being
[202]
in one location are now all
[205]
over the place.
[205]
They're in their homes and depending
[207]
on the size of your business or the
[209]
type of business that you run.
[210]
You may even have international
[212]
team members.
[214]
So now you need to consider time
[215]
zones.
[216]
Things like using WhatsApp,
[218]
Slack, and other tools that allow
[220]
your team to communicate in
[222]
real time are really important
[224]
and something that you should look
[225]
into.
[226]
Naturally, the next thing is your
[228]
external communication.
[229]
How are you going to maintain that
[231]
customer service with your clients
[233]
and customers?
[234]
A great way to be able to do that is
[235]
to maintain all of your meetings
[238]
and to start to integrate video
[240]
conferencing.
[241]
All of us have been hearing about
[242]
Zoom. Everybody's having all these
[244]
zoom calls.
[245]
But you have to have other platforms
[247]
that you can use, like Uber
[249]
Conference or Google Hangout.
[251]
There's also Skype, especially if
[252]
you're working with.
[253]
Again, people who are maybe not
[255]
located in the United States.
[256]
Skype is very popular in the
[258]
international market.
[260]
You also want to make sure that
[261]
you're sharing updates to your
[263]
clients and customers, especially
[265]
if you're a restaurant or in this
[267]
case. Again, this whole training was
[269]
put together for people in tourism
[271]
to saying, you know, is that cruise
[272]
going to be canceled?
[274]
Are you still having that event in
[276]
April, in June, in August
[278]
and November?
[279]
Let people know where you are.
[281]
Also, you may think, well, I'm
[282]
getting so many emails.
[284]
I don't want to inundate my people
[285]
with emails at this time.
[288]
This is the time to do it.
[289]
You need to really remember that
[291]
you're a human to human interaction
[294]
with others.
[295]
And something as simple as letting
[296]
your audience know that your
[298]
business is still open is
[300]
important.
[300]
Because the fact of the matter is,
[302]
in this particular time,
[304]
there's a number of different
[305]
businesses that will close down
[307]
and never open again.
[308]
If that's not the case.
[310]
And even if it is, it's important
[312]
that you keep your customers and
[314]
clients updated.
[315]
So family, and "family", I'm
[317]
using very loosely.
[319]
This could be your roommate.
[320]
This can be somebody that
[322]
you're not related to in any way,
[323]
but people that you're sharing your
[325]
personal space with.
[327]
It's super important that you're
[328]
able to communicate with them.
[330]
What the expectations are
[332]
now that you're all home.
[333]
This time is so different from
[335]
when you would work from home
[337]
before this pandemic because
[340]
you really wouldn't be spending any
[342]
of the same time with others.
[343]
But now every single person
[346]
from someone in kindergarten
[348]
to someone in high school to your
[350]
retired family
[352]
and friends, they are all home.
[355]
So it's important to have a
[356]
conversation about where
[358]
you're working, the volume in
[360]
which you needed to be.
[361]
If you're wearing your headphones,
[363]
how often you can be interrupted?
[365]
How often you're going to need
[366]
breaks?
[367]
Who's responsible for what?
[369]
All of these things need to be
[370]
discussed.
[371]
And the sooner you have the
[372]
conversation, the better it
[374]
will be.
[375]
Be patient.
[376]
This is happening to everyone.
[379]
Remote work is the future.
[381]
And it's also right now.
[383]
Don't judge yourself.
[385]
Be flexible.
[386]
Be patient with yourself.
[389]
There's no expectation that you're
[390]
supposed to know how to do this
[392]
effectively, perfectly right now.
[395]
Remember that this won't last,
[397]
but parts of it should.
[399]
I hope you found this useful.

really strange time.

You can make it through this.
[427]

[428]
to, WOOSAH it out,
