20 Foods I Keep in MY SECRET PREPPER PANTRY (Food Storage 101) - YouTube
Channel: The Family Fudge
[0]
[Music]
[7]
hey guys
[8]
jennifer here and welcome to the family
[10]
fudge in today's video i'm going to be
[13]
taking you on a tour
[14]
of the food storage system i've been
[16]
working on for my family
[18]
i'll be sharing my best tips and tricks
[20]
when it comes to
[21]
food storage as well as my top 20 items
[25]
that i always try to keep on hand in
[26]
case of an emergency
[28]
now i know the words food storage can
[31]
feel overwhelming
[32]
totally foreign or straight up extreme
[35]
to some people and that's totally fine
[37]
but for me food storage is an idea that
[39]
i grew up with
[40]
in this video i'm just here to share
[42]
what's been working for
[44]
my family just in case you're looking
[46]
for some inspiration
[47]
but really when it comes down to it what
[49]
works for my family might not work for
[51]
yours and that's okay
[52]
with moving to a state that is affected
[54]
by hurricanes
[56]
several times a year and with how the
[58]
stores have been
[59]
recently i knew it was time to take a
[61]
better inventory and get everything
[63]
in order because you guys at the end of
[65]
the day i
[66]
love my family and i want to protect
[68]
them whether it's an emergency
[71]
an illness a job loss or even a natural
[74]
disaster
[75]
i still want to be able to provide for
[77]
them and protect them
[78]
and that's really what having a food
[80]
storage system is all about
[82]
now before i get on to my list of 20
[84]
items i wanted to share a little bit
[86]
about my philosophy when it comes to
[89]
food storage
[90]
first of all i do not believe in panic
[94]
buying or
[95]
shelf clearing for that matter so please
[97]
don't think you need to run out to the
[99]
store
[100]
right now and spend a fortune keep in
[103]
mind i've literally spent
[104]
years gathering these items slowly over
[107]
time
[108]
and as my budget would allow if you're
[111]
just getting started i recommend
[113]
picking up one or two extra things each
[116]
time you go to the store
[117]
and definitely shop sales as much as
[120]
possible
[121]
next when it comes to food storage i 100
[124]
believe in the phrase store what you eat
[127]
and eat what you store
[129]
that means i do not buy or store foods
[132]
that my family doesn't want to eat now i
[135]
also believe in having a working pantry
[137]
and what that means is that i'm
[139]
constantly rotating
[141]
using and replacing items in my
[143]
stockpile
[144]
that way nothing goes to waste and as
[147]
i'm using and replacing items i'm making
[149]
sure to
[150]
rotate them so that the older items are
[152]
in front and they get used first
[154]
next in my food storage system i've
[156]
broken everything down into three
[159]
main components first i have my short
[162]
term
[162]
supply so that means foods that last at
[165]
least
[165]
six months to one year then i have my
[168]
medium term
[170]
supply and those are foods that last for
[173]
two years or more and then finally i
[175]
have my
[176]
long-term food storage and those are
[179]
foods that can last
[180]
five years or more i'm talking way more
[183]
i have some things that last
[184]
up to 30 years no joke and then finally
[187]
i also have set up
[188]
three different spaces in my house where
[191]
i store
[192]
the food the first area is my house
[195]
pantry
[196]
and i'll go ahead and link that video
[197]
down below if you want to check it out
[199]
this is where i keep foods that we use
[201]
pretty much on a daily basis
[203]
the next area is what i like to call my
[206]
prepper pantry
[207]
now for this space my sweet hubby
[209]
definitely helped me out
[211]
he built me some inexpensive but very
[214]
sturdy shelves in this little hallway
[217]
area between
[218]
the living room and our garage and
[220]
unlike my garage
[222]
which gets super hot and humid since
[224]
this space is climate controlled
[226]
and i don't get any creepy crawlies in
[229]
here this is the perfect
[230]
extra pantry space for my family and
[233]
then finally there's
[234]
the garage this is where i keep most of
[236]
our long-term
[237]
food storage i also have our old fridge
[240]
in here
[240]
and a small chest freezer for storage as
[243]
well now i can go ahead and get into the
[245]
list of
[245]
20 items that i like to keep stocked at
[248]
all times now these aren't in any
[250]
particular order
[252]
but i am going to go ahead and start
[253]
with water because obviously
[255]
water is very important now according to
[258]
fema
[258]
they recommend that you store at least
[260]
one gallon per person
[261]
per day for at least three days so for
[264]
my size family that's a lot of
[266]
water so i've decided to store it in
[269]
three different ways
[270]
we have smaller bottles of water if we
[272]
have to grab them in a hurry
[274]
we have a larger gallon size bottles of
[276]
water as well
[277]
and then i recommend that you look into
[279]
having a water filtration system as
[282]
well we recently invested in this berkey
[284]
water filter and it works
[286]
really well but they can be kind of
[288]
pricey so a less expensive alternative
[290]
could be to go ahead and purchase
[292]
yourself a brita water filter
[294]
pitcher this is on the smaller side you
[296]
can usually find these at target
[298]
walmart i know that costco has a really
[300]
good deal on them right now if you get
[302]
one of these i recommend that you pick
[304]
up some extra filters
[305]
as well next up in my food storage i
[308]
like to keep
[309]
drink mixes especially if you're having
[311]
to filter your own water
[313]
it might still taste kind of funky so i
[315]
definitely recommend some simple
[317]
drink mixes to make that water taste a
[319]
little bit better
[320]
i found this a big old thing of a
[322]
gatorade at costco
[324]
and this will actually stay good on my
[325]
shelf for at least one year
[327]
you could also stock up on some lemonade
[330]
mix like these little guys here
[332]
these actually have a shelf life of two
[334]
years if they're unopened
[336]
and you guys even if you're not a fan of
[338]
tang definitely think about getting some
[340]
of this
[340]
as well because it has a lot of vitamin
[343]
c in it and then finally in my
[345]
long-term food storage i have a couple
[348]
of these number 10
[349]
cans of drink mix so this is basically
[352]
like
[353]
powdered kool-aid in here and this drink
[355]
mix can last
[356]
up to 10 years also in the drink mix
[359]
category don't forget about things like
[361]
hot cocoa i like to keep some of this on
[363]
hand
[364]
and of course if you are a fan of tea or
[367]
coffee
[368]
you're also going to want to stock up on
[369]
those next up i have my
[371]
meals ready to eat category so these are
[374]
the types of food that you really want
[376]
in an emergency
[377]
because they're either ready right out
[379]
of the can or
[380]
you just have to add water in my
[383]
short-term storage i like to keep these
[385]
bags of soup
[386]
i get these at walmart and they're
[388]
usually pretty inexpensive these come in
[390]
lots of different flavors and
[391]
one bag makes about eight servings and
[394]
they have a shelf life of about one
[396]
year i also like to keep lots of cans of
[399]
soup on hand as well
[400]
now this is one of the items that always
[402]
sells out if there's a hurricane
[404]
headed our way so i definitely like to
[406]
stock up on these
[407]
i like the campbells i like the
[409]
progresso i really like the kind that
[411]
has
[412]
meat and veggies and these have a really
[415]
long shelf life too of about
[416]
two years also in this category i have
[419]
some boxes of deluxe mac and cheese
[422]
and these are really great because they
[424]
have about a one year
[425]
shelf life and you don't have to add any
[428]
milk or
[428]
butter the cheese is already ready to go
[432]
next up on my list i have beans and or
[435]
rice
[435]
now i know these ones seem a little bit
[437]
obvious but i've actually
[438]
store them a little bit differently
[440]
first up let's talk about the beans
[442]
now beans are actually a great source of
[444]
protein and fiber
[445]
and they last a long long time when it
[448]
comes to
[449]
beans i like to stock up on smaller
[451]
sized cans in all different varieties
[454]
these are great to add into so many
[456]
different things they have a shelf life
[458]
of about one
[459]
to two years so they last a long time i
[461]
also went ahead and dry canned some
[463]
beans of my own
[464]
recently this was actually a pretty easy
[467]
process and i'll go ahead and link a
[468]
video down below if you want to learn
[470]
how to do it yourself
[471]
and these can last for years if unopened
[475]
and speaking of yours check out these
[477]
number 10 cans of beans
[479]
no joke you guys these say that they can
[482]
last up to
[483]
30 years now let's move on to the rice i
[486]
have several different kinds of rice
[487]
here
[488]
first off in my short term food storage
[490]
i like to keep some of these
[492]
nor brand rice pouches now this is not
[495]
something that we usually eat on a
[497]
regular basis
[498]
but they do make really good quick
[500]
emergency food
[501]
these are perfect to stock up on because
[503]
they're also really inexpensive i got
[506]
these ones at sam's club and they were
[508]
less than
[509]
70 cents per pouch another favorite of
[512]
mine are these little bags of rice
[514]
i was able to find these at walmart for
[516]
just about a dollar a bag
[517]
they come in lots of different flavors
[520]
and because of the kind of packaging
[522]
that they're packaged in they actually
[524]
have a really long shelf life
[526]
of up to two years and here's a tip you
[529]
guys
[529]
to keep all these little bags of rice
[531]
organized and fresh
[532]
i like to actually put them in a food
[535]
safe five gallon bucket
[537]
i had a nice tight lid on there to keep
[539]
everything fresh
[540]
now just like with the beans i also
[542]
added rice to some mason jars with
[544]
oxygen absorbers and then i
[545]
also have some number 10 cans of rice
[548]
too
[549]
and just like the beans this rice can
[551]
last up to 30 years
[554]
next on my list i have fruits and
[556]
vegetables
[558]
now for my fruits for my short term
[560]
supply i
[561]
actually have a good stock of frozen
[563]
fruit now i got these ones at
[565]
aldi's so they were actually really
[566]
affordable and you guys believe it or
[568]
not the
[568]
dates on these packages say that they're
[571]
good until 2022
[573]
of course if you keep them frozen that
[575]
is another thing i like to keep on hand
[577]
are dried fruits
[579]
so things like raisins apricots
[582]
mangoes we love all of those especially
[584]
missile lily here
[586]
and of course if these are unopened they
[588]
can last anywhere between one
[589]
to two years as well also in the fruit
[592]
department i have some smaller cans of
[594]
fruit
[595]
and some number ten cans of fruit and
[597]
these have a shelf life of
[599]
pretty much the same time about one to
[601]
two years
[602]
whether they're big cans or small cans
[604]
is pretty much the same
[606]
i also have lots and lots of smaller
[608]
cans of veggies
[610]
but i did just buy the veggies that my
[612]
kids prefer
[613]
so things like carrots and green beans
[616]
mixed vegetables corn
[618]
things like that these can last about
[620]
one to two years on the shelf
[621]
and the same thing with the bigger
[623]
number 10 cans and my favorite place to
[625]
stock up on these types of food items
[627]
are either aldi
[628]
or walmart okay guys next up on my list
[631]
is
[632]
flower flower was one of those things
[634]
that disappeared off the shelves a
[636]
couple of months ago
[637]
first i have a smaller container that i
[639]
just keep in my pantry
[640]
now if you're someone who likes to use a
[642]
lot of flour
[643]
think about getting yourself a food
[645]
grade bucket like this
[647]
that way you can get a big old bag of
[649]
flour from costco
[650]
and you can keep the entire thing fresh
[652]
in here and then as far as my long-term
[654]
flour storage i also have some in number
[657]
10 cans
[658]
and these have about a 10 year shelf
[660]
life now after
[661]
flour i have to talk about other baking
[664]
ingredients
[665]
and i'm going to kind of lump this group
[666]
together because you really just want to
[668]
store the type of baking ingredients
[670]
that you like to have
[672]
i know for a while yeast was really hard
[674]
to find so i did go ahead and get
[675]
several packages on amazon they were a
[678]
little more expensive than they used to
[680]
be
[680]
but this will definitely last me a long
[682]
time definitely think about adding
[684]
baking powder
[685]
baking soda and baking mixes to your
[688]
stockpile as well
[690]
these tend to only have about a one year
[692]
shelf life so i try not to stock up on
[694]
these too much
[695]
okay guys next is i think my biggest
[698]
category
[699]
which would be pasta and noodles because
[702]
you guys
[703]
my kids love pasta pasta is cheap and it
[705]
can stay good for a super
[707]
long time now first up i definitely
[709]
stocked up on the mac and cheese
[711]
when they were on sale these have a
[713]
shelf life of about one
[714]
to two years the same goes for the
[718]
ramen noodles these again are super
[720]
inexpensive
[721]
and you guys if you take some of this
[722]
ramen and add things like chicken or
[724]
other veggies
[725]
it makes a really good dinner another
[727]
way i store
[728]
pasta is in these oxo containers these
[731]
keep things fresh for a super
[733]
long time i also have several plain
[736]
boxes of pasta
[737]
and then for my super long-term food
[739]
storage i also have
[741]
some pasta in number 10 cans so these
[743]
are macaroni noodles and then
[745]
spaghetti bites and spaghetti bites are
[748]
really just
[749]
smaller pieces of spaghetti now of
[751]
course to go with the
[752]
pasta i also have a good supply of sauce
[754]
of course you could make your own sauce
[756]
if you want to
[757]
but these ones from sam's club are
[759]
pretty good they have a shelf life of
[761]
about two
[762]
years i also have several bottles of
[764]
alfredo sauce these don't last
[766]
quite as long just about one year on
[768]
these guys
[769]
back here i have some cans of pasta
[772]
sauce they have a two year shelf life
[774]
and then if i get to the point where i
[776]
need to make my own pasta sauce
[778]
i also have a few number 10 cans of both
[781]
tomato sauce
[782]
and crushed tomatoes so i can do that
[784]
and speaking of making my own
[786]
sauce i also recommend that you keep
[788]
your favorite spices
[789]
in your food storage now some spices
[791]
don't stay good forever
[793]
but they really do have a pretty long
[795]
shelf life and if you buy these
[796]
containers at
[797]
sam's club or costco they're actually
[800]
pretty inexpensive and you guys
[802]
don't forget the salt salt is very
[804]
important to stock up on
[805]
you need it in your diet and my favorite
[808]
salt
[809]
just happens to be this kind that comes
[811]
from utah next up is the
[813]
milk category now i know a lot of people
[815]
like to keep
[816]
dry milk on hand but honestly i'm not a
[818]
huge fan of dry milk so instead
[821]
i went ahead and stocked up on these
[823]
boxes of milk from
[824]
the dollar tree this is shelf stable
[827]
milk so it can stay good on the shelf
[828]
for
[829]
one year also in the milk category i
[832]
have some almond milk that can stay good
[834]
for a year
[835]
and then i also have several cans of
[837]
evaporated milk
[838]
and sweetened condensed milk so that
[840]
brings me to
[841]
the oatmeal category and i have a pretty
[844]
wide variety of oatmeals
[846]
in my short term supply i have this big
[848]
canister full of
[849]
rolled oats i also have lots of oatmeal
[853]
packets now these don't stay good as
[855]
long just about six months to one year
[858]
but these are really great in an
[860]
emergency because you really just have
[862]
to add hot water
[863]
also in the oat milk department i have
[865]
some in mason jars
[867]
these can last several years and then
[869]
also i have
[870]
lots of number 10 cans full of oatmeal
[873]
as well
[873]
and these can last 30 years oh yes and
[876]
as i'm going through these number 10
[878]
cans of items
[879]
you'll notice that some of them have
[881]
lids on them that doesn't mean that
[883]
they're actually open
[884]
i just store the lids with the can so
[886]
the lids don't get
[887]
lost up next is the meat category
[891]
now as of right now i don't actually
[893]
have a lot of meat in my freezer
[895]
but i do have lots of canned meat
[898]
now i know not everyone's a fan of
[900]
canned meat but
[901]
if it comes down to having canned meat
[903]
or no meat
[905]
i'm gonna go for the canned meat i have
[907]
things like vienna sausages
[909]
i have spam lots of spam i also have
[912]
some cans of corned beef hash
[914]
those are pretty tasty and then i just
[917]
have a couple
[918]
of number 10 cans of freeze dried meats
[921]
these tend to be pretty pricey so i
[923]
don't have a lot in my stockpile
[925]
right now up next is the sweet category
[928]
so things like
[929]
sugar or honey i definitely like to keep
[933]
some of both in my stockpile
[935]
i just have this small container of
[937]
white sugar i do have some powdered
[939]
sugar i would like to go ahead and pick
[941]
up some brown sugar
[942]
as well of course sugar can stay good
[944]
for a
[945]
long long time especially if you have
[947]
some in number 10
[948]
cans like these and then of course honey
[951]
also has
[952]
a really long shelf life in fact i've
[954]
heard some people say that honey really
[956]
never goes bad like ever
[957]
i'm not sure if that's true though now
[959]
as far as the oil goes i have several
[962]
different kinds
[962]
in my stockpile i have olive oil that
[965]
lasts about a year
[966]
i have avocado oil that also lasts about
[969]
a year
[970]
i have coconut oil which has a two year
[973]
shelf life
[974]
and then i also have some vegetable oil
[976]
now when it comes to
[977]
vinegar i like to keep plenty of white
[980]
vinegar
[980]
and apple cider vinegar in my stockpile
[983]
i actually have several bottles of each
[985]
of these because i think they are really
[986]
handy of course apple cider vinegar has
[989]
lots of health benefits
[990]
you can also make some delicious salad
[993]
dressings
[993]
and the white vinegar there are so many
[996]
different things you can do with this
[997]
you can clean vegetables with it make a
[1000]
multi-purpose cleaner
[1001]
and sometimes i even like to add it into
[1003]
my laundry
[1005]
okay guys now we made it to number 19
[1008]
and this is kind of the potato category
[1011]
one thing that i really like to stock up
[1013]
on are instant potatoes
[1015]
these little packages here are really
[1017]
inexpensive
[1018]
i find these for less than a dollar a
[1020]
bag at walmart
[1022]
and these are the kinds that you just
[1023]
have to add water so they're really
[1025]
great in case of an emergency
[1027]
they last about a year on the shelf and
[1029]
they come in lots of different flavors
[1031]
too
[1031]
also in my stockpile i have some canned
[1034]
potatoes
[1035]
which aren't my favorite but they do
[1037]
last a long time
[1038]
about two years for these and then i
[1040]
also have some number 10 cans of potato
[1043]
flakes
[1043]
and these also have up to a 30-year
[1046]
shelf life and that brings me to
[1048]
the peanut butter category now of course
[1050]
if you are allergic to peanuts you can
[1052]
definitely
[1053]
leave this off your list but peanut
[1055]
butter is an excellent source of
[1056]
protein you can get it pretty
[1058]
inexpensively at most
[1060]
stores and this has a really long shelf
[1063]
life as well
[1064]
for up to a year now you guys i have
[1066]
just a couple of honorable mentions on
[1068]
this list
[1069]
things like cereal some have a
[1071]
surprisingly long shelf life especially
[1074]
if it doesn't have any nuts in there
[1076]
or fruit all of these cereals have a one
[1079]
year shelf
[1080]
life next in the honorable mention
[1082]
category is pancake mix
[1084]
i really like the stock the kind where
[1086]
you just have to add water
[1087]
those are great in emergencies these
[1089]
have about a one to
[1090]
two year shelf life okay guys i want to
[1093]
thank you if you've made it to the end
[1094]
of this list i feel like i've been
[1096]
talking forever
[1097]
but i hope this gives you some good
[1099]
ideas of where you can start if you are
[1101]
interested
[1102]
in building a food storage system for
[1104]
your family
[1105]
now let me know in the comments down
[1107]
below if you have any food
[1109]
storage tips because i'm always
[1110]
interested in learning
[1112]
more and i would love to know what
[1114]
you've come up with i want to thank you
[1116]
guys so much for watching and i'll see
[1117]
