Hey, everyone. It's Annie Margarita Yang聽 back with another video for you today;聽聽
[3]
five reasons to avoid community banks. If聽 you watched my previous video on how to聽聽
[9]
choose a bank on a low income, you're聽 going to find that a lot of the banks聽聽
[13]
that will meet the criteria on the five things聽 I'm telling you to look at when choosing a bank聽聽
[18]
are going to be community banks. I used to be聽 a huge advocate for community banks. I just聽聽
[23]
love the fact that their fees are much lower in聽 general and in general, it's easier to meet the聽聽
[29]
conditions to waive fees at their banks compared聽 to like larger national banks that you'll see all聽聽
[35]
over the country. On top of that, their model is聽 more relationship-based, which is a huge plus.
[41]
At the company that I used to work for, our bank聽 was a community bank, Rockland Trust. There was聽聽
[46]
this one time we put $5,000 worth of checks in聽 the blue mailbox right outside our office and then聽聽
[53]
some group of con artists, scam artists put some聽 sort of sticky adhesive glue into the mailbox and聽聽
[61]
fished them out and they made fake IDs and managed聽 to cash $5,000 worth of checks all in 24 hours.聽聽
[69]
The banker at Rockland Trust that I always saw聽 every time I went in to deposit cash and checks,聽聽
[75]
she was so helpful and it was with her help聽聽
[79]
throughout the entire investigation that we聽 got our money back. She was just so on top聽聽
[84]
of everything and nature to communicate with me聽 every few days what the progress of the case was.
[90]
I mean, I just love that personal touch that聽 community banks have. You just won't get the same聽聽
[95]
kind of service at a big bank, but in the last 12聽 months of me working as an accounting manager for聽聽
[100]
a property management company and having to deal聽 with community banks on a regular basis because we聽聽
[106]
have checking accounts with them and mortgages,聽 I just have to say that their biggest weakness聽聽
[111]
and drawback is their lack of modern technology.聽 I think technology is something that will directly聽聽
[118]
affect you as someone who's looking for a good聽 bank. Before I get into the five ways community聽聽
[124]
banks just plain old suck when it comes to聽 their technology department, if you're new here,聽聽
[128]
please be sure to subscribe and hit that bell聽 icon for notifications. I am not here as a You聽聽
[134]
Tuber to push products and services on you.聽 I'm not going to give you the fish. Rather,聽聽
[139]
I am going to teach you how to fish, especially聽 if you earn a low income because I spent several聽聽
[145]
years of my life earning a low income and trying聽 to make do with the limited resources that I had聽聽
[151]
in order to get ahead so I'm talking to you based聽 on experiences. That's why my advice works. I'm聽聽
[159]
not here just to push a product on you. You're聽 going to find that my channel is all about the AAA聽聽
[164]
strategy of attitude, approach and action. Today's聽 video is in the approach category on approaching聽聽
[170]
how to choose your bank and maybe why聽 you should avoid a community bank.
[174]
So let's get started. The first one is mobile app.聽 It was Clinton Savings Bank that made me realize聽聽
[179]
this that not every community bank would already聽 have a mobile app for their customers by now so聽聽
[185]
you might not be able to remotely deposit checks.聽 While Clinton Savings Bank does have a mobile app聽聽
[191]
for their personal accounts, they do not have a聽 mobile app for their business accounts. Basically聽聽
[198]
for the business that I work for, it is impossible聽 for me to remotely deposit checks. There's no聽聽
[204]
way I'm going to drive 29 miles just to deposit a聽 check. I asked them so if you don't have a mobile聽聽
[210]
app for businesses and I'm sure you have a lot聽 of businesses that have accounts with you, how聽聽
[215]
are they going to deposit checks? Well, basically聽 they expect you to mail them. A stamp costs $0.55聽聽
[221]
cents right now. So every time you want to deposit聽 a check, it cost $0.55. It made me think about it.聽
[226]
If a bank doesn't have a mobile聽 app for their business customers,聽聽
[229]
which is bringing a lot of their revenue, maybe聽 there are still some community banks out there聽聽
[235]
that don't have a mobile app for personal聽 accounts. That's something you might need to聽聽
[240]
check into when you're looking at a community聽 bank, do they even have a mobile app for you?
[244]
The second issue is the running account balance.聽 What is the running account balance? Basically,聽聽
[249]
every time you have a transaction, you're going聽 to want to see after every single transaction,聽聽
[254]
what is the new balance for your bank account?聽 It wasn't until like I came across Citizens Bank,聽聽
[260]
which doesn't have running account balance that聽 I've realized that I really appreciate the feature聽聽
[266]
of a running account balance. Very important.聽 When you're living on a tight budget, you want聽聽
[272]
to be able to look back and analyze on average on聽 any given month, what was your lowest and highest聽聽
[280]
running account balance. Do not to leave too much聽 money in your checking. Put it in your savings so聽聽
[286]
you psychologically don't think it's available聽 to spend, but don't leave too little money in聽聽
[290]
there either because it can cause you to either聽 overdraft or incur minimum daily balance fees.
[296]
The third issue is wire transfers. This聽 doesn't apply to all community banks, but聽聽
[301]
I did come across one, which was Bangor聽 Savings Bank that had a policy of you can't聽聽
[308]
do a wire transfer online and you also can't do聽 a wire transfer over the phone. If you want to聽聽
[314]
do a wire transfer, you have to go in person to聽 the bank to fill out a form in order for you to聽聽
[321]
initiate a wire transfer request. This might be a聽 big issue for you. I know it was a big issue for聽聽
[330]
the person trying to rent one of our apartments聽 and this guy was coming up from Maine to Boston聽聽
[337]
to move here and rent an apartment, right. They needed to put their security deposit down聽聽
[345]
and because they couldn't request a wire transfer聽 online while here in Boston and not in Maine, they聽聽
[351]
had to request a cashier's check, which has also聽 cleared funds so it would work just for us too,聽聽
[357]
but the bank mailed us a cashier's check. Not to聽 our company's name, but instead to that person's聽聽
[366]
name, so we couldn't cash the check. Then I had聽 to mail the check back requesting a new check聽聽
[372]
be made out to our company's name and they聽 did that, but it took two weeks to process.
[379]
Then when that second check came聽 in made out to our company's name,聽聽
[384]
I saw that the new cashier's check was missing the聽 authorized signature, so basically I couldn't cash聽聽
[391]
this check anyway and I had to overnight聽 this check back so it cost us money too.聽聽
[396]
I don't understand what's wrong with this聽 community bank and why you can't initiate聽聽
[401]
wire transfer requests online like any other bank,聽 but this policy could have cost this person the聽聽
[409]
apartment because we had due dates and this person聽 couldn't meet the due dates not because it was his聽聽
[414]
fall and not because he didn't have the money,聽 but because it was totally the bank's fault.
[419]
The fourth issue is online access. I can't聽 believe it's even an issue, but of course,聽聽
[424]
yes it is. It's East Cambridge Savings Bank. We聽 apparently have had this account with them for聽聽
[431]
a few years already and I still can't get聽 online access. They're telling me that we聽聽
[438]
already have an online account with them, but聽 first of all, I don't even know the username聽聽
[442]
and I don't know the password to it. Every time I聽 call customer service for help, it's just hasn't聽聽
[447]
gotten done in the last 12 months, so I can't even聽 tell you how much money is in that account right聽聽
[452]
now because we lack online access. So you might聽 even have that problem yourself. Not only that.聽
[458]
We went checking the checking account聽 statements, right, the bank statements聽聽
[463]
and they said, oh, you can just log into聽 your online account and retrieve those.聽聽
[467]
Hello? We don't have online access. Oh,聽 you want us to manually email you those聽聽
[472]
statements? We're going to charge聽 you $5 per statement. Oh my gosh.
[476]
Lastly, the fifth technological issue I think a聽 lot of community banks might have is something聽聽
[482]
that I haven't realized until the COVID-19聽 pandemic hit. That is that a lot of these聽聽
[487]
banks do not have the systems and processes聽 set in place to be able to have their staff聽聽
[493]
work remotely. Even after 12 months, I don't know聽 why they're still struggling with trying to work聽聽
[500]
remotely because they should have tried to improve聽 things along the way in the last 12 months but聽聽
[506]
apparently it's still an issue. We did a refinance聽 on a property to Norwood Bank last month and聽聽
[512]
I think it was around December 7th. I asked the聽 bank to please add this new mortgage to my online聽聽
[519]
profile so that I can see how much is due for聽 the mortgage every month and what's the current聽聽
[524]
principal balance, how much you pay in interest,聽 all of that good stuff. Yeah, it's been three聽聽
[530]
weeks and it's still hasn't been processed yet聽 apparently because their staff cannot do something聽聽
[537]
like this remotely. They have to do it in the聽 office. I'm not sure why something as simple as聽聽
[543]
this would require it to be done in the office.聽 But yeah, apparently that's just the way it is.聽聽
[551]
I know the mortgage due date is due soon聽 and I still don't even know how much is due.
[558]
Alright, guys. Those are all my horror stories on聽 banks for you today. I hope you enjoyed listening聽聽
[563]
to my stories. Yeah, if you're looking at聽 a community bank, just be a little bit more聽聽
[568]
wary of what their technology is like because it聽 is something that I think is going to directly聽聽
[574]
affect you personally when you have a bank account聽 with a community bank, which is their technology.聽聽
[581]
I just think that they need to step up聽 the game. They're just not there yet,聽聽
[584]
but maybe when they are there, it's聽 going to be a great experience for you.
[588]
But right now, it's not that great of聽 an experience. It's something I never聽聽
[592]
thought about five, seven years ago, but it's聽 something I've only realized in the last 12聽聽
[598]
months. So I just thought maybe I might give my聽 two cents on this. All of the information that聽聽
[602]
