and welcome to this demonstration video
[16]
on how to use the irs text withholding
[18]
estimator
[18]
which can be found at irs.gov w4
[22]
app when the landing page opens
[25]
you'll see the before you begin box that
[28]
recommends
[28]
you have your most recent pay stubs
[30]
handy along with information
[32]
for any other sources of income and your
[34]
latest tax returns
[36]
also ensure to use the whole dollar
[37]
amounts in the estimator
[39]
now let's get started by clicking the
[42]
use the tax withholding estimator button
[44]
here in the middle of the screen once
[46]
the estimator screen displays
[48]
you'll see you're on step one about you
[51]
and at the top is a legend with five
[53]
other steps before i get to see my
[55]
results
[56]
please note that any information entered
[58]
in this video is made up
[60]
and for demonstration purposes only
[62]
please follow along
[64]
using your own information depending on
[66]
how you answer this tax estimator's
[68]
questions
[69]
will cause additional qualifying
[71]
questions to appear below
[73]
or on following screens also note that
[76]
many of the questions are notated as
[78]
required
[78]
in red text and to the right of some
[82]
questions
[82]
is a help tip displayed as a question
[85]
mark icon
[86]
which provides additional information
[87]
regarding that question
[89]
to begin you'll want to select the
[91]
filing status that you expect to use
[93]
for the upcoming tax filing season for
[95]
me i'm going to select
[97]
married filing jointly
[100]
you'll now notice that additional
[102]
questions are displayed
[104]
next i'll select if somebody else can
[105]
claim me as a dependent on his or her
[108]
tax return
[109]
in my case i'll select no then scrolling
[112]
down
[112]
i'll need to select if i plan on
[114]
claiming any other dependents on my tax
[116]
return
[117]
in this case i'm going to select yes and
[119]
in the next field that's displayed
[121]
i'm going to click the drop down and
[123]
choose 2.
[125]
the next question is based on income and
[127]
asked if either i or my spouse will hold
[129]
the job this year
[130]
with paychecks that'll have federal tax
[133]
regularly withheld
[134]
again i'm going to select yes then it
[137]
wants to know how many jobs we plan to
[138]
hold
[139]
throughout the year first for me i'll
[142]
select one
[143]
and for my spouse i'll also select one
[146]
the next question asks if we'll receive
[149]
a pension this year
[150]
in my case i'm going to select no to
[152]
this one
[153]
in the fifth question it asks about
[155]
additional sources of income and tax
[157]
payments i expect to have throughout the
[159]
year
[160]
in my case i will select that my spouse
[162]
will collect
[163]
unemployment compensation and i'll
[165]
select that i earned net income from
[168]
self-employment
[169]
please click on all the boxes that
[171]
relates to your circumstance
[173]
note selecting these options will make
[175]
additional questions appear
[176]
on following screens finally at the
[178]
bottom for demographics
[180]
select if you or your spouse will be 65
[183]
or older or are blind
[185]
in my case none of these relate so i'll
[187]
just click on the next button
[188]
here at the bottom left step two income
[191]
and withholding
[192]
the first section is about my job and
[195]
asked if i expect to hold it for the
[197]
entire year
[198]
in my case i do expect to so i'll select
[200]
yes
[201]
then i need to answer how frequently i
[204]
am paid
[205]
on the drop down there's weekly every
[208]
two weeks
[209]
twice monthly or once a month i'll
[211]
select every two weeks
[213]
next wants to know what date did my most
[216]
recent pay period
[217]
end if i click in the field a calendar
[220]
will display
[221]
or i can enter in the date manually
[225]
now you'll see additional questions have
[226]
appeared so scrolling down
[229]
next i'll enter the total wages that i
[231]
expect to receive this year
[233]
next i'm asked to enter any bonuses that
[235]
i've received this year
[237]
or that i expect to receive later on
[239]
this year in my case i'm going to leave
[241]
these blank
[242]
however if you are expecting to receive
[244]
a bonus later in the year
[245]
and your employer does take out taxes
[247]
from your bonuses
[249]
you'll want to select this box here
[250]
underneath
[252]
next using my latest pay statement i'll
[254]
need to enter my total federal taxes
[256]
withheld to date and what my total
[259]
federal tax withheld was
[261]
in my recent pay statement
[265]
finally wants to know if i contributed
[267]
to a tax deferred retirement plan
[269]
or an hsa or fsa or other pre-tax plan
[273]
in my case i'll select no for both next
[276]
i need to enter in my spouse's job
[278]
information
[279]
to do so click on the plus sign to the
[282]
left
[282]
to expand it as it did before it wants
[285]
to know if my spouse will have held the
[287]
job all year long
[288]
in this case i'm going to select no then
[291]
i'll enter the date range
[292]
that my spouse either worked or will
[294]
work throughout the year
[302]
as before i'll enter in the frequency
[306]
every two weeks and then i'll have to
[307]
enter in estimated amounts
[310]
until they actually begin their job
[314]
again because of how i answered
[316]
previously i need to enter in
[318]
my spouse's total estimated unemployment
[321]
compensation for the year
[324]
then any estimated federal income tax
[326]
withheld from unemployment
[328]
then for myself my expected net
[331]
self-employment income
[333]
and any estimated federal income tax
[335]
payments i've made
[336]
toward my self-employment income now
[339]
that i've completed all these entries
[341]
i can click on the next button here at
[343]
the bottom
[344]
step 3 is about adjustments to income
[347]
you can choose to see adjustments here
[349]
to check if anything applies to you
[351]
if it doesn't then simply go to the next
[353]
step in my case i have no adjustments
[356]
i'll simply click on go to next step and
[358]
then click on the next button below
[361]
which now takes me to step 4 deductions
[364]
the description here notes that i
[366]
qualify for the standard deduction
[368]
based on my filing status most taxpayers
[371]
take the standard deduction
[373]
but if you'd like to itemize click on
[375]
the itemized deductions
[376]
and then fill up these fields if your
[379]
itemized deductions are less than the
[380]
standard deduction
[382]
then the calculator will automatically
[383]
use the standard deduction
[385]
in your results in my case i'm just
[387]
simply going to take
[389]
the standard deduction and then click
[391]
the next button to proceed to step 5.
[394]
and in step 5 i can choose to see any
[396]
tax credits here
[398]
and then enter anything in that applies
[400]
to me
[401]
however if none of these credits apply
[403]
to you then simply select
[405]
get my results without tax credits and
[408]
then click the next button
[410]
on the results page the estimated
[412]
overpayment shows the amount
[414]
of my estimated refund assuming that
[416]
nothing changes throughout the year
[418]
however once my spouse begins their job
[421]
i'll want to run this estimator again
[423]
and enter in
[424]
their actual amounts for pay and
[426]
withholdings to get a more accurate
[428]
result
[429]
if you scroll down you'll see that
[431]
there's a slider bar here in the middle
[432]
of the screen
[434]
if you want less of a refund at the end
[436]
of the year
[437]
or more of a refund at the end of the
[439]
year you can slide the slider either to
[442]
the left
[442]
for less of a refund or to the right for
[445]
more of a refund
[447]
and then below will display what
[449]
adjustments you should make to either
[450]
your or your spouse's w-4
[453]
by clicking on the plus sign on either
[455]
one
[457]
scrolling down to the bottom you'll find
[460]
a detailed table
[461]
with a summary of all your inputs and
[463]
calculations
[464]
you can expand or minimize any of these
[467]
sections
[468]
as you please you can also make edits to
[471]
any of these sections
[473]
if you scroll all the way to the bottom
[475]
you can also go back
[477]
start the form all over or you can print
[479]
this page
[480]
for a record of your inputs we highly
[483]
recommend you check out the frequently
[485]
asked questions for any questions and
[487]
concerns
[487]
regarding your results or withholding
[490]
recommendations
[491]
