[0]
now as this fight over votes plays out
[2]
local four's learned that republican
[5]
state senate majority leader mike
[6]
shirkey and house speaker lee chetfield
[9]
are expected to visit the white house
[11]
friday the michigan democratic party is
[13]
calling
[13]
the trip quote unquote shameful karen a
[16]
lot to unpack here
[17]
and we'll bring you the very latest
[19]
coming up on the news at five until then
[20]
we'll send it back to you
[21]
all right thank you ken we've had close
[23]
presidential elections before many of us
[25]
can vividly remember the year 2000 with
[28]
those hanging chads in florida
[30]
but this here feels different and some
[32]
experts see reasons
[33]
for concern as hyper partisan fights
[36]
seem to buck the norms of democracy
[37]
we've come to expect
[38]
paula tupman this afternoon went looking
[40]
for perspective on what we're seeing
[44]
some experts believe that the so-called
[46]
longest enduring experiment of democracy
[49]
that is the united states is in peril
[52]
here's a fact about the human condition
[55]
governments fall system of government
[58]
lasts forever
[59]
professor richard primus is a
[61]
constitutional law expert at the
[62]
university of michigan
[64]
i mean people throw sharp elbows in
[66]
elections people sometimes say things
[68]
that aren't true
[69]
people there are lots of underhanded
[70]
techniques that are used but when we get
[72]
to counting the votes
[73]
and once the votes are counted right we
[76]
have a pretty strong
[78]
practice of everybody saying okay like
[79]
the math is the math
[81]
right if it's super close we have a
[83]
recount right but the math is the math
[85]
and now we
[86]
move forward the simple act of two
[88]
members of the wayne county board of
[90]
canvassers
[91]
picking and choosing which results they
[93]
want to certify
[94]
is deeply concerning to professor peter
[96]
trumbor
[97]
chair of the political science
[99]
department at oakland university
[101]
the idea that they would certify
[104]
all the votes in wayne county except
[106]
those from the city of detroit
[108]
when the problems for example in livonia
[112]
with uh sort of the mismatch between the
[115]
the poll books
[116]
and and the final numbers were
[118]
equivalent
[119]
um that they would accept the votes from
[122]
livonia which is
[123]
90 some percent white while throwing out
[126]
the votes
[127]
from the city of detroit which is the
[129]
largest majority black city in the
[131]
country
[132]
i think tells you all you need to know
[134]
there's reporting that president trump
[136]
got involved in the wayne county dispute
[138]
himself
[139]
reaching out directly to republican
[141]
canvassers monica palmer and william
[143]
hartman
[144]
to try to nullify
[148]
the votes of hundreds of thousands
[151]
of who are supposed to be his own
[154]
constituents is simply
[156]
is simply shocking but the damage is
[157]
already being done because if you can
[159]
successfully get enough people
[161]
to choose to believe they have been
[164]
cheated
[164]
or slighted and they are unwilling to
[167]
recognize the winner
[168]
whether they voted for them or not
[170]
democracy
[171]
is injured this is the only time
[175]
in those 200 plus years of history that
[177]
we've had a president who has sought to
[179]
burn the place down
[180]
as he's headed out the door i think that
[182]
that what this is showing us
[184]
is that anybody's democratic rights are
[186]
at risk when you have unscrupulous
[188]
people in power
[189]
that really seems to be it right that
[191]
everybody's vote
[192]
is is at risk of being taken from them
[196]
and that we really need uh i think we
[199]
really need some
[200]
some serious vigilance to make sure that
[203]
it doesn't happen
[206]
and so what our experts are basically
[208]
saying is for anybody who wants to
[210]
continue to have a choice
[212]
in leadership by way of voting they need
[215]
to get in touch
[216]
with their lawmakers and demand that
[218]
they uphold
[219]
the sanctity of this vote so that they
[223]
can vote another day
[224]
in other words in order for democracy to
[227]
live another day
[228]
for you to even vote this is the time to
[230]
make sure
[231]
that the that this election is indeed
[234]
certified
[235]
and upheld because there's just no real
[238]
evidence of fraud that is being leveled
[242]
against
[242]
the city of detroit and indeed michigan
[245]
all right thank you paula
