- What is full coverage auto insurance?
[4]
We hear the term used in a variety of different ways
[8]
with different meanings each and every time.
[12]
So today we're gonna clear that up for you
[15]
in today's video.
[25]
Hey folks, Jack Wingate here,
[27]
and on this channel we help individuals, families,
[30]
and businesses save money on your insurance,
[34]
help you understand your insurance just a little bit better
[38]
and let you know what's going on in the insurance industry.
[42]
And today we're discussing a topic
[45]
that more people than not have questions about
[51]
and that is full coverage auto insurance.
[56]
Yes.
[57]
When we ask people that come to us to provide them
[61]
with advice or pricing for auto insurance,
[65]
we typically ask, well, do you know what coverage you have?
[69]
And more times than not, they go, well,
[70]
I've got full coverage or they might not know.
[75]
And they go, well, I want full coverage.
[79]
Full coverage means something different
[82]
to every single person, every single agent.
[86]
So today we're gonna go through exactly
[89]
what it means and what it doesn't mean.
[93]
And to start with, with personal auto insurance
[99]
there are generally two sections of the policy.
[104]
In North Carolina you're required to have section one
[107]
which is liability coverage.
[110]
Liability coverage consists of bodily injury
[113]
and property damage and that protects the other parties
[118]
in case you're in an accident and it's your fault
[120]
and you do bodily injury damage to them,
[123]
or you damage their property.
[125]
I.e. either car or God forbid, you crashed into their house.
[130]
That's the first part of auto insurance in North Carolina.
[135]
The second part is physical damage coverage.
[140]
Physical damage coverage covers damage to your vehicle
[145]
and generally there are two components of that.
[148]
Comprehensive slash other than collision
[151]
and then collision coverage.
[153]
Comprehensive coverage or comp coverage
[156]
is also known as other than collision,
[158]
covers the damage to your vehicle when it is damaged
[162]
by something other than an at fault collision.
[165]
So generally speaking, you're looking at a rock
[168]
hit your windshield.
[170]
Maybe you hit a deer or another animal,
[174]
maybe a tree falls on your car,
[176]
acts of God, things of that nature.
[179]
And then obviously collision is you actually colliding
[182]
with something most of the time,
[184]
it's in an at fault accident, but I guess you could run
[189]
your car into your own house and damage your vehicle.
[192]
That way it's technically your fault, but it's not fault
[197]
like most people would say like I hit someone else.
[199]
So that covers the damage to your vehicle.
[201]
And those are the two main components of the auto policy,
[205]
the liability bodily injury property damage,
[208]
and then the physical damage portion,
[210]
which is comprehensive and collision.
[213]
And to many people that means full coverage,
[218]
but to others, it doesn't.
[220]
And here's why there are some other sections
[222]
to the policy that you can have.
[225]
The first part would be medical payments,
[227]
medical payments on a policy covers you.
[231]
It protects you and any of your passengers that are injured
[234]
in, on, or around a vehicle, completely optional.
[240]
Most of the time people have medical payments.
[244]
Generally you see about a $2,000 limit.
[247]
We internally always use 5,000, but again, optional.
[252]
So if someone was referring to having full coverage,
[256]
you would maybe think to include medical payments,
[259]
'cause that would be full coverage.
[262]
Then you have extended transportation slash
[266]
what some people call rental car reimbursement.
[268]
So that coverage helps you in case your car is damaged
[273]
in an at fault accident, so your fault,
[277]
and you need to rent a car while your car is being repaired.
[282]
That is extended transportation
[283]
slash rental car reimbursement.
[286]
And then you have towing and labor.
[288]
Towing and labor is a reimbursement plan
[290]
where if you have to have your car towed,
[294]
you can submit the claim for reimbursement.
[297]
So some people consider having full coverage,
[302]
meaning liability, physical damage,
[305]
i.e. comp and collision, medical payments,
[309]
and then towing labor and extended transportation.
[311]
They say, that's what full coverage means.
[315]
Then you have to have uninsured, underinsured, motorist,
[317]
bodily injury, and property damage.
[320]
This is just part of the policy in North Carolina.
[323]
You can't really choose or exclude that.
[326]
And that covers you in case someone hits you
[330]
that doesn't have insurance or doesn't have enough insurance
[332]
and causes bodily injury.
[334]
And in the case of uninsured motors, property damage,
[336]
it covers the damage to your vehicle.
[338]
If someone hits you that doesn't have insurance.
[341]
So again, kind of part of the policy just there.
[345]
And if you have that plus liability plus medical payments
[350]
plus physical damage, comp and collision,
[352]
plus extended transportation, towing and labor,
[356]
that could be considered full coverage.
[359]
But with some carriers, you even have additional coverages.
[363]
You could have enhancement endorsements
[364]
that provide diminishing deductibles,
[366]
or maybe give you accidental death policies as part of them.
[371]
You can have what's called repair and replacement coverage,
[373]
which only comes with new new vehicles, a brand newbie.
[378]
It was not a new to you vehicle, but a new vehicle.
[381]
And if you have that,
[381]
that could be considered full coverage.
[384]
So the point of all of this
[386]
is that there is no one definition for full coverage.
[393]
So when you are looking for auto insurance coverage,
[398]
make sure that you reach out to someone
[401]
who is gonna explain to you your different options,
[405]
let you know what each of the coverages means.
[408]
And then you can decide for yourself
[411]
what full coverage means to you.
[414]
Hey guys, I hope this has been helpful.
