[2]
Welcome back to the show
[3]
Even before her post convention bounce, Hillary Clinton was leading Trump among
[7]
women voters, minority voters,
[9]
Tony Award voters, and probably twenty percent of voters whose last name is
[13]
Trump. But there is one demographic that's not with her.
[17]
Donald Trump you're talking about a guy right now
[21]
who's connecting with those white working-class voters in a way that you
[25]
have your entire career and in a way that Hillary Clinton is not.
[29]
Of course regular folks connect with Joe Biden. Who wouldn't love a guy who plays "pull my
[33]
finger" at the State of the Union.
[35]
Tt's hard to believe Hillary has trouble with white working-class voters when
[39]
she's been giving white people what they like
[41]
ever since 1996
[43]
(Macarena plays)
[50]
Stop it mom, it's only fun when dad does it
[53]
Hillary wants to reach disaffected white voters
[56]
That's why she picked some assistant coach of the youth soccer team as her
[59]
emissary
[60]
I also serve on the aging committee to make sure that seniors like my folks
[65]
have a secure retirement and don't get targeted by ripoff artists who will scam
[71]
them out of their savings
[72]
And nothing makes me sadder
[76]
than to see people of the greatest generation,
[79]
people like my own Nana and Bobo,
[84]
getting overcharged by some great big company
[87]
Aw, I think things are gonna work out great for that guy. But the two human
[92]
station wagons can't cover all 50 states by themselves.
[95]
Can the rest of the Democrats find their inner Springsteen?
[99]
I sent Ashley Nicole Black and Mike Rubens to find out
[105]
(SAM VOICEOVER) The unabashed patriotism of the Democratic convention seem designed to
[109]
(SAM VOICEOVER) win back the blue collar white men who could decide this election. But
[113]
(SAM VOICEOVER) underneath the flag-waving, chanting, and literal pandering to testicles,
[117]
(SAM VOICEOVER)the party field they have the ideas that help those voters.
[121]
When the middle class does well, the rich do very well and the poor have hope.
[126]
(SAM VOICEOVER) But what is it about the Democratic faithful that makes it hard for them to connect to those voters?
[132]
I love PBS news. Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifill.
[135]
I had these two linen suits that I bought at Banana Republic.
[137]
I studied comparative literature so I studied French and Chinese literature
[141]
they look fine but they were like, a little too summery.
[144]
(ASHLEY) You guys have had Lena Dunham, you've had Sarah Silverman, you've had Meryl Streep.
[149]
What else are you doing to let blue collar white voters know that you're welcoming them?
[154]
We're set, we're um, huh -- good question.
[158]
(SAM VOICEOVER) Perhaps the Democrats with their love of breathable men's fashion,
[161]
Franco-Chinese literature, and snarky late-night commentary are stuck in their
[165]
heads. Which in turn are stuck up their butt holes
[169]
We got to connect the dots so that they understand the importance of the issues.
[172]
That Social Security has to be solvent
[174]
(ASHLEY) As soon as you said the word solvent my boner started going down. --Oh, I understand, I understand.
[178]
(MIKE) You need something that's more like (grunting)
[180]
more from the gut. Stop being so thinky-thinky
[184]
(low groan noise)
[188]
We believe in raising the minimum wage, fighting for social security
[193]
(ASHLEY) Is there a way that you could say that with more emotion?
[196]
We are protecting and expanding Social Security
[200]
(MIKE) Could we get some emotion from you?
[203]
Probably not.
[204]
Social Security!
[206]
(MIKE) How about passion?
[209]
I think that I've seen a lot of passion at this convention. Uh, I, you have seen passion--
[213]
(MIKE) No I'm saying I'm asking for passion from you
[215]
Social Security!
[216]
(ASHLEY) Okay, that was, a lot.
[218]
(MIKE) How about an awkward laugh?
[219]
(forced laughter)
[221]
(ASHLEY) You've known Hillary Clinton for years and I was wondering,
[223]
(ASHLEY) would you just call her and tell her to take better care of white people?
[228]
Let me see if I can reach her. Hillary, it's important that I speak with you, this is
[232]
Eddie Bernice.
[233]
We've got to get a strategy that make poor white people understand that they should
[238]
be voting for you
[240]
(SAM VOICEOVER) Unfortunately that voicemail was already hacked and deleted by the Russians.
[244]
(SAM VOICEOVER) The Congresswoman Johnson had other wisdom to share
[247]
(ASHLEY) How do you get white voters in your district to vote for you?
[250]
I give them attention
[251]
I let them know that they're important, I do case work and I do case work even when
[257]
it's not in my district sometimes so they gravitate to me because they do get
[263]
attention
[264]
(ASHLEY) Do you ever get tired of taking care of white people?
[266]
Yeah.
[268]
It's not easy.
[270]
But maybe it can be easy. Maybe it all comes down to this one suggestion from the world's most
[275]
interesting man....'s less interesting brother.
[278]
Start treating people with respect and then you get the results.
[283]
(MIKE) I have a feeling somehow that you could sing a romantic Spanish song.
[289]
(Singing Besame Mucho)
[299]
(MIKE) Very good!
[299]
Gracias!
[301]
(MIKE) You guys are totally not gonna get the white vote.
[304]
We'll be right back.
