Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome to this consumer YouTube channel
[5]
You know some wise person
[7]
Well, we think so. The wise person said that there is nothing in the world that certain but death
[15]
and taxes
[16]
So today you're going to hear a story
[20]
Related to taxes told to us by Dewayne and his dealings was the company called Jackson Hewitt
[27]
Without further ado, please enjoy the video as they do
[36]
15 I decided I was my girlfriend I
[40]
Started living together and I could do my own taxes for decades and I figured let's let a professional do it
[47]
you know, we were in Texas laws are a little different so
[51]
I just wanted to see you know, what was available. So
[54]
2015 for the 2014 year
[57]
Went ahead and had Jackson view it your taxes and everything went pretty well
[63]
I later net year X. I got a bill for two hundred and some odd dollars of some interest or something
[68]
It's pretty basic and I went you know, why it's $200. I'm not gonna raise this. Think about it
[74]
So then I go back the next year
[76]
for
[77]
2016 in the year 2017 for my 2016 taxes and again the Obama I had changed jobs
[86]
Obamacare, you know, they're confusing for people I had to provide their own health health insurance
[90]
I'm like, you know what let's do this again because I'm not I'm not an expert
[95]
So I go there sit down the same person I dealt with last year
[98]
He actually remembered me I have that personality and we went through everything. I told about my job change
[103]
I told him and showed up. He's like all my documentation and then talked about the health care piece
[110]
After you went through everything. He said my tax refund was going to be 16 thousand dollars, which floor my wife and I
[119]
We you know
[120]
we're like, are you sure we've been through all the documentation and and I'm like
[124]
Well, is it because I'm working from home now? Because that was the with my job change the label work from home and
[130]
I couldn't figure out you know, what the difference
[133]
because of Obamacare that's obviously why that is
[136]
So we're like, okay. So we've got the the sixteen thousand dollar check. Yeah got the sixteen thousand dollar check and we
[143]
You know put it in savings and then we said hey
[146]
Let's you know what upgrade or wedding and you know spend a little bit, you know, it's it's you know
[151]
It's we had a professional do it. So
[155]
that year you
[157]
Know came to an end and we're like, okay. Well, we're gonna expect to get sixteen thousand dollars next year. Nothing's change
[163]
I'm still working from home wife is still doing her job
[165]
Nothing. I mean nothing's changed. So we go and we sit down and
[171]
the
[173]
New tax person they had replaced Justin
[176]
and
[177]
She said okay. Yo is $2,500
[181]
we're shocked because realized that what what could have happened between this year and last year and
[188]
She's like, well, this is just the way it is that I don't know so I start investigating I call the main office and
[197]
Finds out or turns out that Justin did not enter in
[201]
W2 from my previous employer. All right work from home that he get all the information on that we talked about and
[207]
I went. Oh crap
[210]
And then when I went back to the other at the office
[213]
She said we'll just go ahead and hold on to it this percent. Nothing happened and
[219]
You'll probably get away with it. And huh?
[222]
No, that's not the way you do things. So I kept pressing the issue and
[228]
talked to Shana and
[231]
Said hey, you know we got to figure what this is and all that. She's like well we can go and do an amended
[236]
1040x and go from there and
[240]
And we're going through she's saying oh my gosh
[242]
She messed up this he messed up this you know, and actually recorded this part of the conversation
[246]
I was I didn't record the first
[248]
Conversation because I had no idea this was going to happen and then as I started getting into them like you know what I need
[253]
to record this
[254]
So anyway as I'm talking with Shana, he was the branch manager
[259]
She says okay. We'll just messed up here here here. Let me fix these issues
[263]
And then I and I was like, okay
[266]
So you're gonna like help with you know fees or whatever. And before I even really start talking about that
[272]
She goes look for even go there. Our attorneys are better than you. You'll never see a dime from us and
[279]
I'm like, well, that's interesting. I wasn't gonna go there but I figured you know, like you guys made a mistake
[286]
owned up to it and you know help out and she's like well
[289]
Here's an 800 number to the IRS and just hold on to the money and use that to negotiate
[296]
And I'm like, I'm not doing that. That's not I mean, it's not how I do business
[300]
I don't hold money or hold this and it's just not it. So anyway, so I went ahead and pay the taxes along with my
[309]
2017 tax bill has been gone on a few months and you know, they done well a year late but on time or whatever
[316]
2017 was paid on time like April 13th anyway
[320]
so then I started getting
[322]
bills in the mail and I figured excited pay the amount that was due back in 2015 and
[328]
I figured okay. Well, you know, we're good
[330]
I'll wait to hear from them
[332]
We'll go from there and they're like, okay, whoa
[333]
Yo is additional six or seven thousand dollars and you owe is this and this and this and I'm like, oh boy
[339]
So I go back to Shana and she's like man. I mean you're on your own
[344]
You know, I we did we did what we're going to do for you
[348]
Okay, so I start researching tax law and how to handle abatements and all their stuff and basically all the research on my own
[356]
and figured out that for consumers if you make an honest mistake, and you're a good taxpayer, they'll give you a
[363]
Brother word. They give you a like a one-time a one-time free free bead where you don't pay penalties
[369]
You still pay interest but not penalties, which is about six thousand dollars
[372]
so I dealt with their main tax off or the main IRS attorney and then their one out of
[380]
Utah and
[381]
Went ahead and worked out an agreement and they went ahead and waved my taxes
[385]
I paid my taxes faithfully for the last thirty years of my life. So I'd never had an issue
[390]
Until I started using jackson hewitt the two years I used them is when I get in trouble
[395]
so anyway, so I went ahead and they went ahead and took and
[400]
Wrote off the $6,000 gave you that whatever the one-timer
[404]
and then I got a letter in the mail about three months later stated a levy my bank account and
[410]
Take my house and you know all that fun stuff
[412]
I'd say owed I would like six hundred and ten dollars in interest over those years
[418]
And so I called him
[420]
I'm like, I thought you know, this is how this worked and it was actually the dark piece of information
[424]
Shawn had given me that I wouldn't be responsible. But anyway
[427]
And they said no. This is the way this works and you know, you're we waived the
[433]
Penalties but not the interest so ahead and cut a check for six hundred and ten dollars and sent in to him
[439]
I went you know what I
[442]
Jessica knew it didn't wanna I mean didn't want to step up and at least help me navigate this they had acknowledged
[448]
It was their fault not mine. It wasn't me
[451]
So they should at least you know, I'm gonna ask him for hand it I'm saying. Hey help me. I'm not a tax person
[456]
I'm a regular guy
[458]
not anymore, but no tax on how but
[461]
Anyway, they wouldn't do it. So I had to figure out my own and
[465]
You know go through all that
[467]
and anyway
[468]
I you know pay the taxes and then I submitted a my review and I went through all the detail they've included screenshots
[474]
So it's not my opinion. It's not
[477]
Anything is actually what happened?
[480]
And then so then I get a someone who responded on there saying oh, hey, I'm sorry. It happened
[486]
Give us a call and we'll fix it for you
[488]
And I'm like, okay, so I called them and I get their main 800 number
[493]
No one knows what's going on and then I get a call back from the branch manager
[497]
Not a not Shana, but your name is Maria something
[501]
he was trying to like feel me out a little bit and
[504]
in trying to like get me to take down my
[507]
I did record this but try to get me to take down my thing because she was confused and they don't do that and it's
[513]
just so
[514]
wrong and whatever else I said all the facts were there you actually she has more access its information than I do because she has
[520]
all the forms and everything there was no I wasn't trying to get away with anything and
[525]
so she's like so I can't change your mind that we couldn't like, you know work something out and I'm like
[533]
And she's like, alright well we'll have somebody get back to you that was it I've heard from since so
[539]
My whole thing is this is what Jackson Hewitt did to you know average consumer person
[546]
$16,000 I had to pay back
[549]
Which I obviously I'm not too many people have sixteen thousand
[552]
I went through a divorce a year prior to that and then things like that, so
[557]
Financially did not have the money to do that
[559]
But I ended up, you know finding the money
[561]
You know had to got a loan actually
[563]
In order to not go to not go to jail and not be able to take care of my three kids
[567]
But give me you whole different story
[569]
Anyway, that's in a nutshell. That is pretty much my story
[573]
Well now looking back at the whole situation if we assess
[579]
Everything that was done and what's not done by Jackson Hewitt
[584]
What would you say upsets you the most?
[589]
Actually that comment our attorneys are better than you. That was the big one the
[594]
Well, there was that and also asking me to defraud the government. I mean, I'm not a fan of the government
[600]
Let me be the first to say that but I understand taxes have to be paid. I
[605]
Didn't I I mean I get those things I'm you know
[608]
Barry I get that but when I'm told by professionals to
[612]
Not send the money that I owe them to them
[617]
That's that's wrong. I'm they're asking me to get away with something and I that's something I don't believe it
[623]
I actually in my and I was a young when I was younger. I used to be a debt collector
[627]
So that idea of you know, getting something for nothing always made me mad
[633]
I mean you had people have heard
[634]
Hardships and issues and they should be worked with and you had people that try to get away with stuff and I don't like those
[639]
Kinds of people and they were asking me to be that person and then when Shana told me not to send a sixteen thousand dollars
[645]
in
[646]
And wait and negotiate with their attorneys and do all sorts of on my own they weren't offering to help
[652]
I'm like, that's not how I do stuff. That's this. Yeah, so
[657]
What if Shana Maria whoever else is in there that was talking to you?
[663]
Went back to their old files
[666]
Review your situation really viewed and decided. Hey, you know, we're on devein over here
[672]
Let's do something to compensate
[675]
Him for all the wrongdoers. Is there anything they can offer you or do for you at this time? Oh
[683]
It this time? No, I mean it's that the amount of time is gone by they're doing this to cover themselves and
[691]
At this point I want people to know what happened to Joe consumer and make that decision
[697]
I'm not telling people not to use Jack's acute. I mean they do taxes. I'm sure pretty good
[702]
But when they screw up, which we're all human
[705]
This is how they chose to handle it if they you know
[708]
And I don't and at this point no amount of money is gonna help me
[712]
You know change my mind. I mean it would be the right thing to do
[716]
But as far as like having turning it into hey, if we give you a you know, 500 bucks or whatever. You'll take down your
[724]
your Google
[725]
item now
[727]
people I mean people need to know these things and I have other companies that I've worked with that it traded the same thing and
[733]
I'm like no, I mean you messed up. You should let the world know you should put on there
[737]
This is what we did to fix it and let consumers go. Hey, you know what? They screwed up. Here's how they fixed it
[743]
I'll do business with these people. I mean, I'm not perfect. You're not no one's perfect
[747]
Do the right thing and they didn't
[752]
You
