[0]
a new study shared exclusively with nbc
[2]
news takes a closer look at just how
[4]
much the child tax credit payments
[6]
helped 36 million families during the
[8]
covet pandemic according to children's
[10]
health watch the credit payments
[12]
decreased food insecurity by 26 percent
[15]
but the study also shed light on the
[17]
flaws of the program including what type
[19]
of families were qualifying for the
[21]
payments nbc news now correspondent
[23]
dasha burns spoke to one mom who is
[25]
calling on congress to extend the
[27]
credits dasha good morning
[30]
hey zinc like good morning look it's no
[32]
secret that american families have been
[34]
hit hard by record inflation more folks
[37]
struggling to put food on the table to
[39]
put gas in the tank but at the same time
[42]
those millions of families who were
[44]
receiving the child tax credit monthly
[46]
payments for families with children they
[48]
stopped receiving those payments now
[50]
this study shared exclusively with nbc
[52]
news showed just how much of a lifeline
[54]
it was since those payments stopped food
[57]
insecurity has increased by 12
[61]
those payments ended because congress
[63]
did not pass an extension of the child
[65]
tax credit and west virginia senator joe
[68]
manchin was the lone democrat to vote
[71]
against that extension we spoke with a
[73]
mom in west virginia about just how much
[75]
those payments meant to her and what
[77]
she's hoping her senator will do next
[79]
watch
[81]
[Applause]
[83]
oh you want to drop all the way down
[86]
okay kristen olson is a single mom to
[88]
three boys her youngest george is four i
[92]
just want him to know and to have the
[93]
same opportunities as everybody else
[95]
last year kristen felt like she had some
[97]
room in her budget to give george those
[99]
opportunities today she says is a
[102]
different story so all of our bills keep
[104]
going up
[105]
gas right utilities water like
[108]
everything my rent my rent went up 75
[110]
dollars a month in january food and so
[113]
then they take that three hundred
[114]
dollars
[115]
away
[117]
grace and george are among nearly 36
[119]
million families who received the
[121]
expanded child tax credit in 2021
[124]
when those payments stopped in january
[127]
the struggle started we've been finding
[129]
closed giveaways you took advantage of
[131]
some food pantries yeah is that your
[134]
first time going to a food chain yes and
[136]
i've struggled before right i've been a
[137]
single mom almost my whole life 24 years
[140]
but it got to the point where we had no
[142]
food
[143]
new data from children's health watch
[145]
shared exclusively with nbc news reveals
[148]
just how much of a lifeline these
[149]
payments were for families like this one
[152]
finding the advanced child tax credit
[154]
payments led to a reduction in food
[156]
insufficiency children's health watch
[158]
also finding racial and economic
[160]
disparities among those who received
[162]
payments
[163]
while families were receiving the child
[165]
tax credit payments in the fall there
[168]
was a 26
[169]
reduction in food insufficiency among
[172]
families with children
[174]
when we looked at that same data set in
[176]
february
[178]
after the monthly payments had expired
[180]
for families what we saw was a 12
[183]
increase in food insufficiency for
[186]
families the fact that we saw a
[188]
significant reduction in food insecurity
[191]
really speaks to the fact that people
[193]
were using this to afford basic needs i
[195]
didn't used to have to pinch pennies
[198]
like this kristin lives in west virginia
[201]
where 93 percent of children qualified
[203]
for the child tax credit these families
[206]
haven't received a payment since
[207]
december when congress failed to pass
[209]
the build back better act the
[211]
legislation would have made these
[213]
payments permanent but chris's senator
[215]
joe manchin was the lone democrat to
[218]
stand in the way
[219]
saying he views the credit as a
[221]
disincentive to work i've been basically
[224]
very clear on that i think there should
[225]
be a work requirement and privately
[227]
saying he worried people were using the
[229]
money to buy drugs for chris who works
[232]
multiple jobs that hurt to hear
[235]
but it's like he's just saying you're
[237]
not worth investing in when they're not
[238]
giving us this money no your children
[240]
aren't worth it what would getting the
[243]
child tax credit back mean for your son
[246]
george for george it would be going back
[247]
to jiu jitsu easier school clothes it
[250]
would mean a better new sneakers with
[252]
congress back in session lawmakers are
[254]
working to pass a slimmed down version
[256]
of the president's buildback better
[258]
agenda republican opponents of president
[260]
biden's agenda say policies like the
[262]
expanded child tax credit payments are
[265]
contributing to the country's record
[266]
levels of inflation because it increased
[269]
spending now parents like chris are
[271]
looking for relief more than ever when
[274]
it seems less likely they'll get it from
[276]
washington
[278]
the work the side hustles all of it
[281]
all of the hustle that you put in every
[283]
day
[284]
to provide for him what do you hope that
[286]
turns into i just want him to to know
[289]
that he has the power to you know live
[292]
his best
[294]
life now secondly despite all of those
[297]
positive impacts the study also found
[300]
disparities in who received the child
[302]
tax credit for example immigrant mothers
[304]
families with immigrant mothers were
[306]
less likely to receive those payments
[308]
latino families were less likely to
[310]
receive them and families without active
[313]
bank accounts were less likely to
[315]
receive the child tax credit compared to
[317]
families with active bank accounts
[319]
children's health watch does make policy
[321]
recommendations based on their findings
[322]
and they are recommending that congress
[325]
pass an extension of the child tax
[326]
credit and of course that those
[328]
disparities get addressed as well
