Welcome back to another video guys.
[1]
In today's video,
[2]
I will tell you about skill trade jobs.
[6]
like, Welding, Plumbing, Auto Mechanic.
[9]
and all other skilled labor jobs.
[14]
Today, I have Sukhwinder with me.
[16]
We studied together in the same program.
[20]
We studied at Sheridan College.
[23]
But, today he works as an Auto-Mechanic.
[26]
So, today we will get to know from him
[28]
how to get skilled labor jobs ?
[30]
How to apply for them ?
[32]
How to find such jobs? If you have interest in them
[35]
What is the scope of such jobs?
[37]
What is the growth in such jobs?
[42]
How much can you learn from these jobs ?
[45]
Also, what is the salary range?
[47]
So, stay tuned.
[50]
Because I'm going to share a lot of knowledge with you all today.
[58]
Hi, I am from Nawashahar, Punjab.
[60]
I had applied for Mechanical Engineering, Technician program.
[64]
I came in 2017.
[66]
My program was for 2 years,
[67]
without co-op.
[69]
I completed my study in 2019.
[72]
Then I applied for my work permit in 2019.
[76]
and started applying for jobs alongside.
[77]
So, here it is important to know that,
[80]
we had the same program, but his program was without the co-op
[84]
and mine was with the co-op.
[86]
and after he graduated,
[89]
he started working after getting his work permit.
[91]
So, Sukhwinder.
[92]
did you have any past, work experience?
[95]
in auto mechanic, or any similar work.
[97]
from back home or here. Whatever jobs you did.
[100]
Did you have any experience at all?
[102]
No, I didn't have any experience.
[105]
because I had only worked in a warehouse
[108]
while studying. So, I did not have any
[110]
such experience.
[111]
It is important to note that
[114]
he didn't have any experience.
[116]
and still
[117]
after coming on a work permit,
[119]
he found an Auto-Mechanic job
[121]
and learnt the skill.
[123]
So, my next question is,
[126]
How did you start the Auto-Mechanic job
[130]
after graduating ?
[130]
So, basically after graduation
[134]
I started finding work in Lube Shops.
[136]
in the small car garage shops.
[140]
You perform oil changing,
[143]
tire changing.
[145]
I had used my resume
[147]
and applied at Mr.Lube.
[148]
Mr. Lube is a franchise based business
[151]
and they have small car garage shops.
[153]
So, I finally got the opportunity to work there.
[156]
and gained a lot of experience.
[158]
about the basic understanding of cars.
[161]
We performed tire changes and oil changes
[163]
for several different cars.
[174]
So, you learned all the basics.
[178]
of car maintenance at the Lube Shop.
[181]
Yes, I learned a lot of basic things.
[184]
But, it did not involve much mechanical work
[188]
related to engine or transmission.
[191]
Other than regular maintenance,
[194]
we used to change air filters,
[195]
cabin air filters,
[198]
changing lights. Pretty much, that was it.
[201]
But I wanted to learn more.
[203]
So, I realized that,
[206]
I should apply for bigger, garage shops.
[208]
Then I started finding more jobs.
[212]
After working for 6 months.
[213]
at the Lube Shop.
[214]
I almost found my next job.
[217]
which I found by working more on my resume.
[221]
I gave my resume at the bigger garage shops.
[226]
Then I received a call from a workshop.
[229]
They said that,
[231]
they were willing to sign me as an apprentice.
[233]
So, that's how I got it.
[234]
So, guys.
[235]
It is very important to note
[237]
that whenever he wanted to find a job,
[240]
he worked on his resume.
[242]
I have mentioned this previously as well.
[245]
If you are an International student in Canada
[248]
or on work permit
[249]
and want to find a good job,
[250]
Your resume plays a vital role.
[252]
Please keep working on your resume.
[254]
After that, I realized,
[255]
that I want to become a more better.
[256]
Auto Mechanic.
[258]
For which I needed a license.
[259]
So, the place I was working,
[262]
they did not have any option for me to get a license.
[266]
So, I started finding more jobs.
[270]
So, In order to get a license.
[271]
you need to join as an apprentice under Ontario Colleges of Trades.
[276]
So, Sukhwinder told us a very important thing
[279]
is that to become a proper mechanic
[282]
he required a license.
[284]
and to get a license,
[285]
you need to do an apprenticeship under
[287]
according to Ontario College of trades.
[289]
It means that,
[290]
you need to work alongside a trained mechanic.
[294]
For how long?
[295]
Almost 3 to 4 years.
[296]
You will have to work with them
[298]
for almost 3-4 years
[299]
After which they provide you a certificate?
[302]
Yes, when you sign up as an apprentice,
[306]
at the end of the time duration, they provide you a certificate.
[310]
So, that certifies all your working hours
[312]
at the ministry.
[313]
And when your hours are fulfilled.
[315]
then you can write your exam.
[317]
So, how does an Apprenticeship work ?
[321]
So, as I am doing my Auto Mechanic Apprenticeship.
[325]
It is a 3 years program.
[328]
For any skill trade job.
[330]
you need to do an apprenticeship
[334]
to obtain a license.
[337]
In my case,
[340]
to be a fully licensed Auto Mechanic,
[343]
I need to go through an apprenticeship
[346]
under Ontario College of trades.
[349]
In every year of your apprenticeship.
[352]
You need to write an exam.
[353]
For example, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3.
[355]
When you clear all levels,
[358]
you need to take a final exam.
[360]
After you clear the final exam,
[362]
you get the license.
[364]
And, after obtaining that license,
[366]
you can work as a registered mechanic
[371]
or you can open a car repair business. Right?
[374]
Yes, exactly and your pay wage goes up too
[377]
and you can open your garage as well.
[379]
It is very important to note that
[381]
for apprenticeship you need an employer.
[384]
So, you don't need to pay any fees
[387]
to Ontario Colleges of Trades.
[389]
You just need to pay the fee for the exam.
[392]
If you join without an employer,
[395]
then you need to pay the college fees
[397]
which is pretty high.
[398]
So, all in all, apprenticeship without an employer
[401]
is expensive because you will have to be
[402]
enrolled in a college and pay its fees.
[405]
But, if it is with an employer
[406]
then it is cheaper because
[407]
the employer covers your fees.
[409]
Yes, basically your fees gets covered
[411]
through the employer.
[413]
You only end up paying exam fee.
[414]
These are extremely important points.
[416]
because I did not know that for a skilled job
[419]
you need a license.
[420]
but, as he said that to be an independent Auto Mechanic,
[424]
you need to have license
[426]
for which you need to do an apprenticeship.
[428]
and write an exam.
[430]
under Ontario college of trades.
[432]
Earlier, you used to work on minimum wage.
[434]
Now, after becoming an auto mechanic.
[437]
What is the difference in starting salary
[439]
or starting hourly wage for an auto mechanic.
[442]
Usually, a mechanic's starting hourly wage,
[446]
I would say.....
[448]
if you are new to the industry,
[449]
starts around $28 hourly.
[452]
$28/hour
[453]
and right now in Ontario
[456]
the minimum wage is at $14 per hour.
[458]
It could vary from province to province
[460]
but it is $14/hr in Ontario.
[462]
And as he said, an auto mechanic's pay
[464]
could start from $28 per hour,
[466]
if you have proper skills.
[468]
So, other than regular maintenance,
[471]
when you went to new place to work.
[473]
What new skills did you learn?
[475]
So, you learn a lot more at actual mechanic shops.
[478]
For example, changing brakes,
[481]
To pull out engine and transmission, from the car,
[484]
and performing repair work.
[486]
Let's say repairing any part of the engine
[491]
and there are plenty of other skills
[494]
which you get to learn at mechanic shops.
[508]
So, Sukhwinder, when you came to Canada.
[510]
you had no knowledge about cars.
[513]
within 3 to 4 years.
[515]
I would say in 2 years you completed your education.
[517]
third year you worked at Lube Shop.
[519]
Fourth year, you started working as an
[522]
Auto Mechanic.
[525]
You still need a license but
[526]
you have gained a lot of skill.
[528]
So, in these four years,
[530]
how do you look at your journey ?
[532]
that you knew nothing about cars.
[534]
and now you are on the path of being a fully licensed Auto Mechanic.
[539]
The people who are watching right now
[541]
those who want to come to Canada from India
[543]
And all those international students
[546]
who want to work in skilled labor jobs.
[547]
What advice would you want to give to them?
[550]
What future or scope do these kind of jobs hold?
[552]
should they go for skilled labor jobs?, or not?
[557]
What are the pros and cons?
[560]
At first, when you come here.
[563]
you tend to find any kind of part time job.
[565]
because you need to pay the college fees
[568]
and support your family.
[570]
So, at that time you tend to do labor jobs.
[574]
It is hard to find a skilled labor job at that point of time
[576]
because you don't have much experience.
[581]
But, after you finish your studies,
[584]
I would suggest you that,
[586]
go for skilled labor jobs.
[589]
because you will earn a good living.
[593]
and it is a respectable job.
[595]
So, Sukhwinder told another important thing
[598]
that because skilled labor jobs are highly respected,
[604]
unlike India,
[605]
where if you go to an Auto-Mechanic shop,
[607]
you will find a lot of mechanics working
[609]
who come from poor backgrounds.
[612]
or even any other skilled labourer like
[616]
mechanic, welder or plumber
[619]
They are neither respected nor well paid.
[624]
But here, in Canada, skill is highly valuable.
[630]
If you can learn any such skill from back home.
[633]
or just like Sukhwinder
[634]
did not gain or learn any skill from India.
[636]
He came here and build his interest in this skill
[637]
and passionately made his way up till here.
[639]
As he told you all, there is good salary and it is respected
[643]
Because most people here,
[646]
prefer buying a new object rather than getting it repaired.
[648]
But, if it is an expensive object
[650]
like a car which needs repair.
[653]
Then, instead of buying a brand new one,
[656]
They get it repaired for which they pay
[657]
hefty fee. This ends up valuing the skill as well.
[665]
So, it is a great option for those students
[668]
who want to go for skilled labor jobs.
[672]
It has a very good scope.
[675]
So, within next 5 to 10 years,
[677]
Where do you see yourself as an Auto-Mechanic ?
[682]
When you become a fully licensed Auto Mechanic,
[685]
you get plenty of opportunities to apply to other jobs.
[689]
You can apply to be a Service Advisor.
[694]
There is a lot of scope in that as well.
[697]
There are a lot of car dealerships here
[700]
where you can apply
[701]
and earn good money.
