Bank Rate (RBI) - Explained in Hindi - YouTube
Channel: Asset Yogi
[0]
Namaskar, my name is Mukul, and welcome to Asset Yogi.
[3]
Friends, this video is part of a series
in which we are discussing RBI's monetary policy.
[8]
In the first video, we understood CRR and SLR.
[11]
How RBI Controls Inflation From Cash Reserve Ratios and Statutory Liquid Ratios.
[16]
And in another video, we discussed Repo Rate and Reverse Repo Rate.
[20]
How does RBI maintain a balance between inflation and growth
[24]
with repo rate and reverse repo rate.
[26]
Similar to repo rate and reverse repo rate, there are two more rates.
[31]
One is the bank rate
[32]
Second is marginal standing facility rate
[35]
In this video, we are going to focus on bank rate
[38]
In the next video, I will cover the MSF rate.
[40]
In this video, we will understand what a bank rate is and its concept.
[47]
What is the current rate of Repo rate, reverse repo rate,
[48]
bank rate or MSF rate in today's date
[53]
It's not much important, it is more important to understand their concept
[57]
Rates can go up or down.
[59]
In this video, we will try to understand
that bank rate which was the key policy
[65]
Why did we need to replace the repo rate?
[69]
And why is the bank rate significance reduced presently ?
[72]
If the significance is decreased
[75]
Then what is its purpose?
[77]
That is what we will try to find out in this video.
[78]
Let's go straight to the blackboard.
[81]
If we talk about bank rates and
If we talk about its historical past.
[86]
Bank rate used to be the key policy in India
[89]
RBI is used to decide the monitory policies directly from the bank rate.
[94]
And in today's time, if we talk about repo rate,
[97]
Earlier The repo rate was the bank rate.
[100]
And today's date repo rate is the key policy rate.
[103]
It means if the repo rate increases
[106]
So it means RBI is trying to reduce inflation
[110]
That means the interest rate of all banks depends on the repo rate.
[114]
Banks get an indication that if RBI increases the repo rate, then
[118]
We also have to increase the interest rate
[120]
And if interest rates increase in the market
[123]
If the loan interest rate will increase for consumers like us
[127]
So it is normal that we will take limited loans.
[129]
If we take limited loans then the demand will decrease
[132]
If the demand will diminish then so apparently price will also reduce
[135]
So in this way, inflation will reduce
[137]
So in this way, RBI can control inflation with the repo rate
[141]
And suppose if RBI wants to boost growth
[144]
So RBI reduces the repo rate
[146]
I have already made a detailed video on repo rate and reverse repo rate.
[151]
You can watch my video if you want.
[153]
Come back to the bank rate.
[154]
If you read the definition of bank rate on Wikipedia, Investopedia
[159]
or anywhere else, so you might be confused
[162]
So let me tell you clearly, the bank rate is still
the key rate in many countries internationally.
[169]
The bank rate is being used internationally, in many countries.
[174]
But it is not being used in India.
[176]
Significant of bank rate has become very minor in today's date
[181]
Before this was the key policy rate.
[183]
The bank rate has been completely d-linked as of today's date
[186]
Any other interest rate does not depend on the bank rate
[190]
All interest rates depend on the Repo rate.
[193]
The bank rate is also linked to the Repo rate.
[196]
I'll also show you how it's linked
[198]
We have understood what is the difference between bank rate and repo rate.
[203]
Now let us talk about what is the purpose of bank rate
[205]
Today there are only two main purposes of the bank rate.
[209]
First, it is used as a discount rate.
[212]
Like banks have bills of exchange.
[216]
Or they have some commercial papers
[218]
So the bank can get them discounted by the RBI.
[223]
And I will explain in detail how this discounting is done.
[227]
Now we are considering that the bank rate is used as a discount rate.
[231]
In fact, the other name for the bank rate is the discount rate.
[235]
What is its second purpose?
[237]
It is also used as a penalty rate.
[239]
I talked about SLR and CRR requirements in the previous video.
[244]
If you haven't watched the SLR and CRR video
[246]
So you must watch that video too.
[248]
You will get an overall idea about monetary policy.
[251]
If banks do not maintain their SLR and CRR requirements,
[256]
So the RBI imposes a penalty on them.
[258]
And the rate of that penalty is decided by the bank rate.
[262]
If there is a default of 1 day of the bank
[265]
So bank rate + 3% penalty is applied
[268]
and in subsequent defaults bank rate +5% penalty is levied.
[273]
So here also the bank rate is used.
[275]
what should be the bank rate
[278]
Bank rate is linked to repo rate as of now
[282]
And it can be Repo rate + X%.
[284]
X% can be anything
[286]
As of today's date, the Repo rate is running at 6.5%.
[291]
And X is 0.25%
[293]
That means as of today bank rate is 6.75%
[298]
But initially, the bank rate was pegged with repo rate
[303]
And it was said that the bank rate was always 1% higher than the repo rate.
[307]
RBI also keeps on changing X%
[311]
Keep in mind that the bank rate is always slightly higher than the Repo rate.
[315]
But yes, as of today's date, the bank rate is equal to the MSF rate.
[319]
So I write here specifically.
[322]
So MSF rate (marginal Standing Facility Rate) is also 6.75%
[328]
I will tell you what is the MSF rate
[331]
So it is clear to us that as of today's date
bank rate has these two purposes.
[336]
There is no other purpose other than this
[338]
Before bank rate was very important
[340]
Now its significance is not that much.
[342]
Now the repo rate is valuable.
[345]
You must watch the video of the repo rate.
[347]
From that, you will completely understand how the repo rate works.
[350]
Now let me tell you how a bank rate works like a discount rate
[354]
Suppose a company has a bill of exchange
[357]
Let's say there is an exporter who goes to the bank
[361]
Either with the bill of exchange or a promissory note.
[365]
And he says its value is 1 crore
[369]
But its payment date is after 3 months.
[372]
And that company wants to get the cash of ₹1 Crore today.
[378]
Even though I may get less money
[380]
but I have a requirement of cash today.
[382]
So the bank says okay we will give you money today.
[386]
But we will not give you ₹1 Crore
[388]
we will apply a discount on it
[390]
We will give you only 97 lakhs.
[393]
So here a discount of ₹ 3,00,000 is applied.
[396]
We call this discount bill discounting.
[400]
And I have told you this too.
[401]
You can watch my bill discounting video
[403]
I have also made videos on the bill of exchange and promissory note
[407]
You can also watch these videos if you want to know the concepts.
[411]
The 97 lakhs that has been allotted depends on what?
[416]
the bank discounts the bill of exchange at its discount rate.
[421]
This means the bank is charging ₹3,00,000 interest for 3 months.
[428]
And the bank is saying that we are giving you ₹ 97 lakh today.
[431]
And after 3 months the bank will collect this amount
[435]
Whoever has to pay by the Bill of Exchange
[439]
The bank will collect this amount from him
[441]
The bank receives a bill of exchange of rupees one crore.
[444]
Bank says why do we wait for 3 months
[448]
We use the facility provided to us by RBI
[451]
So the bank goes to the RBI
[453]
And the bank says that you take this bill of exchange
or promissory note from us
[458]
Its value is one crore rupees, after 3 months you will collect its value.
[462]
RBI says ok but I will give you ₹98 lakhs only
[467]
the bank says no problem
[469]
We have given Rs 97 lakh
[470]
And we are getting 98 lakh rupees
[472]
So we are having profit of ₹1,00,000.
[473]
So the risk was taken by the bank.
[476]
The payment of that risk is ₹ 1,00,000.
[479]
RBI has decided an amount of ₹ 98,00,000
[482]
How it is decided
[483]
At which rate did RBI discount this value?
[488]
RBI discounts at the bank rate.
[490]
So this is another use of the bank rate
[494]
The first is the discount rate.
[496]
The second is the penal rate.
[497]
These are the two uses of the bank rate.
[499]
So I think you must have cleared the concept of bank rate very well here.
[503]
So that's all for this video.
