[0]
today we're getting into the latest
[1]
tesla news including tesla's new
[3]
one-hour service center model new
[5]
batteries from a big tesla supplier the
[7]
20 000 ev from hyundai and new paint
[9]
colors coming soon from tesla so let's
[11]
get into it
[14]
[Music]
[16]
first up today an update to tesla's
[18]
supercharger network as we talk about a
[20]
lot the supercharger network is one of
[22]
tesla's biggest advantages but they are
[24]
planning to open it up to other evs soon
[26]
this would add lots of charging options
[28]
for any ev as tesla is rapidly expanding
[30]
their supercharger network each day
[32]
they've reported on this growth on their
[34]
q2 earnings call and it's impressive to
[36]
see last week we saw plans revealed for
[39]
a new v4 charger from tesla this is a
[41]
new design that's larger than the
[42]
current one and likely would feature
[44]
updated charging speeds and a ccs
[46]
connector option ccs would allow other
[48]
evs to charge easily just like tesla
[50]
does over in europe we've heard details
[52]
about tesla adding ccs to their
[54]
supercharger network in north america so
[56]
that other evs can use them elon musk
[59]
said it's a little trickier in the u.s
[61]
because we have a different connector
[62]
than the rest of the industry but we
[64]
will be adding the rest of the industry
[66]
connector as an option to superchargers
[68]
in the us while tesla hasn't given a
[70]
timeline the white house officially
[72]
reported that tesla is moving to open
[74]
chargers by the end of this year quote
[76]
later this year tesla will begin
[78]
production of new supercharger equipment
[80]
that will enable non-tesla ev drivers in
[82]
north america to use tesla superchargers
[84]
this is of course expected to be ccs
[86]
compatible superchargers and while
[88]
tesla's motivation here is partly to
[90]
hold true to their mission it's also to
[92]
open them up for some government funding
[93]
on these chargers the government wants
[95]
more chargers and arguably as well even
[97]
tesla aiming for that funding is just
[99]
helping them expand charging options for
[101]
electrification in general in any case
[103]
according to the wall street journal
[105]
tesla already has a national network of
[107]
fast chargers for its own drivers but
[109]
they aren't available to other types of
[111]
vehicles in the u.s for a year the
[113]
company has said it plans to open its
[114]
u.s network to others though details
[116]
about timing and whether it would open
[118]
existing stations or new ones have been
[120]
sparse recent regulatory filings and
[122]
other documents indicate that the
[124]
company is applying for public funding
[126]
that if granted would require access by
[128]
other makers of evs to the network so
[131]
this funding can only be secured if the
[132]
chargers test the builds with it are
[134]
available to any electric car and the
[136]
funding won't be in place until later
[138]
this year at a federal level however at
[140]
the state level while federal
[142]
infrastructure dollars won't start to
[144]
become available until later this year
[146]
tesla sites in willows barstow coalinga
[149]
and baker are among 17 likely winners of
[151]
a california grant to help build public
[153]
chargers the california energy
[155]
commission would have to approve the
[156]
funding possibly at an october meeting
[159]
of the five commissioners according to
[160]
the agency tesla has been piloting this
[162]
program in europe with their
[163]
superchargers there that already have
[165]
ccs and soon we should be seeing them
[167]
add new fully open superchargers which
[170]
is very exciting when buying an ev fast
[172]
charging infrastructure remains one of
[173]
the biggest questions and tesla looks to
[175]
be taking their experience here and
[176]
expanding it to many other cars for now
[179]
it seems that they will be adding new
[180]
specific fully open superchargers
[182]
instead of retrofitting ones already in
[184]
operation so we'll have to see how they
[186]
handle this transition they need to
[187]
balance out congestion which already
[189]
occurs at some superchargers from their
[191]
own cars with the addition of new ones
[193]
as they reiterate on their non-tesla
[195]
supercharger website future sites will
[197]
only be opened to non-tesla vehicles if
[199]
there is available capacity next up
[201]
today some big news for tesla paint
[203]
colors for years now tesla has only sold
[205]
five main paint colors if you go online
[207]
to configure a tesla any model your
[209]
options are white midnight silver blue
[211]
black and red many opt to get their
[214]
paint changed or have the car wrapped
[215]
after the fact for a personal touch but
[217]
ultimately people want some options from
[219]
tesla when they initially get their car
[221]
a few months ago tesla made it so that
[222]
either white or midnight silver are
[224]
included paint colors at no extra charge
[227]
which arguably helped them sell a little
[228]
more variety than just white but for a
[231]
while now elon musk has talked about new
[232]
paint colors in 2020 he said giga berlin
[235]
will have world's most advanced paint
[237]
shop with more layers of stunning colors
[239]
that subtly change with curvature that's
[241]
where they'd start but then to be clear
[243]
fremont and shanghai will also be
[245]
upgraded over time but it's hard to
[247]
retrofit these improvements to an
[249]
operating paint shop when asked later in
[251]
2020 what his favorite color for a tesla
[253]
was he said quote new deep crimson from
[255]
giga berlin is my favorite around that
[257]
time elon musk's personal model s was
[259]
spotted with this color at the spacex
[261]
and tesla headquarters this was exciting
[264]
to see and many want to see this
[265]
particular color enter production and it
[267]
was actually spotted at the fremont
[269]
factory with a test unit as far as other
[271]
colors though tesla has been working on
[272]
three different options in a tesla
[274]
mobile app update in late 2021 there
[276]
were three colors spotted deep crimson
[278]
multi-coat the one elon talked about as
[280]
well as abyss blue multi coat and
[282]
mercury silver metallic a rough
[284]
recreation of these colors can be seen
[286]
here some great renders from thomas
[288]
peace show what these colors would look
[290]
like on a model y clearly if these are
[292]
what the cars ended up looking like they
[294]
would be very popular options even just
[295]
to change up the five colors tesla ships
[298]
when talking about these colors during
[299]
first model y deliveries at giga berlin
[301]
elon musk said quote with respect to
[303]
colors and which colors are going to be
[305]
available from this factory colors are
[307]
always a challenge because when you
[308]
think about colors you don't only need
[310]
to manufacture it but you also need to
[312]
service it and fix it for 20 years we
[314]
got to think what are we going to put
[316]
the service team through so if berlin
[318]
has an insanely complex paint process
[320]
and that car has to be serviced they
[322]
need to think that all the way through
[324]
at the same time though he added we have
[326]
to be careful with the total number of
[327]
colors but we are going to make some
[329]
special colors here and it's about more
[331]
than the color itself but the layers of
[333]
paint in order to get the dimensionality
[335]
we are going to make a very special red
[337]
which probably a lot of people have seen
[339]
it's like 13 layers of paint and we will
[341]
also have a silver with maybe eight
[343]
layers it's also going to be special
[345]
kind of a liquid silver so he's
[347]
confirming the deep crimson as well as
[349]
the mercury silver metallic both of
[351]
which were spotted in code at the
[353]
opening of gigabilin as well a slightly
[355]
uncovered model y was spotted and it
[356]
appeared to be in deep crimson they were
[359]
working on it there but of course we've
[360]
yet to see production of these paint
[362]
colors recently though tesla made some
[364]
upgrades to giga berlin those upgrades
[366]
are now complete and just days after
[368]
completion new colors have been spotted
[369]
on site these bodies were spotted in
[371]
rough unfinished condition parked among
[374]
many model ys as we can see after the
[376]
recent upgrades they are once again
[377]
testing with deep crimson tesla is all
[380]
about scaling right now so i think
[381]
spotting the deep crimson right now is a
[383]
good sign for that introduction i don't
[385]
think tesla would be wasting their time
[387]
with a deep crimson model wide demo if
[389]
they had no intention of bringing this
[390]
color out in the fairly near future
[392]
likely these new colors would start
[394]
first with deep crimson from berlin but
[396]
as elon mentioned fremont and shanghai
[398]
could be upgraded slowly over time i
[400]
personally think we'll see these colors
[401]
first from berlin but then giga texas
[403]
we'll have to see of all these colors
[405]
though assuming the renders are accurate
[407]
which is your favorite leave a comment
[408]
below to let me know i'd probably go for
[410]
abyss blue myself next up today one of
[412]
tesla's biggest flaws that i'm very
[415]
experienced with is their service teslas
[417]
are designed with the idea that the best
[418]
service is no service however this
[420]
doesn't end up being the reality each
[422]
tesla i have purchased required a
[424]
service appointment for small issues
[426]
shortly after delivery and this is an
[427]
experience that many have additionally
[429]
for any type of service throughout
[431]
ownership wait times are extremely long
[433]
earlier this year in a company-wide
[435]
meeting elon said i think we still have
[437]
a relatively conventional approach to
[439]
servicing although we kind of use the
[440]
vehicle app so we definitely have better
[442]
servicing than the rest of the industry
[444]
but i really want tesla to look at how
[446]
we can revolutionize service and i don't
[448]
know make it 10 times better than the
[450]
rest of the industry on june 4th he said
[452]
quote working on tesla north american
[454]
service goal is two-thirds of cars
[456]
receive same-day service no weight this
[458]
is music to the ears of many frustrated
[460]
tesla owners who absolutely love their
[462]
cars but experience significant
[464]
frustration if anything goes wrong even
[466]
big fans like sawyer merritt follow this
[468]
tweet up to say that's great to hear
[469]
service is an area that has needed more
[471]
attention now elon has updated this even
[474]
further from same day to one hour
[476]
service he tweeted saying excited to
[478]
work with tesla service to enable same
[480]
hour service as often as possible
[482]
applying formula one pit crew techniques
[485]
to tesla's this is great to hear but
[486]
many have pointed out that at the core
[488]
tesla needs to fix issues coming from
[490]
the factory and open more service
[491]
centers according to crowdsourced data
[493]
collected by troy testlike around 69
[496]
percent of tesla buyers needed service
[498]
within the first 30 days of ownership in
[500]
2022 this is taken from limited survey
[502]
data but still isn't a great look for
[504]
new expensive cars this is a big area of
[507]
focus that tesla has needed to address
[509]
and it seems they are truly working on
[510]
in my area of los angeles i've actually
[512]
seen a few new service centers being
[514]
built and this will become increasingly
[516]
necessary the more cars test the cells
[518]
next up today some big news for tesla
[520]
batteries tesla is working on their own
[522]
4680 cells and continuing to accelerate
[524]
with suppliers catl is one of their main
[527]
suppliers and catl has confirmed
[529]
production of their new m3p batteries
[532]
for next year these are amongst multiple
[534]
battery types catl is working on and
[536]
they have specifically said that these
[538]
are different than lithium manganese
[540]
iron phosphate or lmfp batteries quote
[543]
these other metals generated a ternary
[545]
material in the phosphate system that
[547]
improves energy density charge discharge
[549]
capability and cycle stability they say
[552]
that they use other metallic elements
[554]
that are not in lmfps and that they are
[556]
promised to deliver greater energy
[558]
density than lithium iron phosphate lfp
[560]
batteries but it cost parity with
[562]
ternary lithium cells the full details
[565]
aren't here yet but lmfp batteries in
[566]
theory have a 15 to 20 percent higher
[569]
energy density than lfp at a similar
[571]
price point now catl is doing something
[573]
different with their new m3p batteries
[576]
and it could help bring costs down even
[578]
further catl also said that battery
[580]
packs with these new m3p cells could
[582]
offer over 700 kilometers or 435 miles
[585]
of range on a charge the type of vehicle
[587]
and size of battery pack aren't
[588]
specified but likely they're talking
[590]
about a battery pack in vehicles similar
[592]
to what is on the market today able to
[594]
achieve this higher range thanks to this
[596]
new type of cell tesla receives their
[598]
lfp battery supply from catl and this
[600]
has been significant for their standard
[602]
range vehicles so it's very possible
[604]
that this new chemistry will end up in
[605]
tesla vehicles ultimately tesla is going
[608]
to want to utilize whatever makes sense
[609]
from a scaling perspective and better
[611]
energy density with lower cost
[613]
definitely fits the bill there this is
[615]
an exciting development and sometime in
[617]
2023 we should see this all come to
[619]
production for catl we'll have to see
[621]
which cars this m3p cell ends up in
[624]
further regarding batteries though some
[625]
big news from redwood materials redwood
[627]
materials is a company founded by tesla
[629]
co-founder jb straubel on their website
[632]
they talk about accelerating the
[633]
reduction of fossil fuels saying
[635]
redwood's mission is to build a circular
[637]
supply chain to power a sustainable
[639]
world and accelerate the reduction of
[641]
fossil fuels we are inventing
[642]
sustainable materials to power the world
[644]
turning waste into profit and solving
[646]
the environmental impacts of new
[648]
products before they occur ultimately
[650]
they're a battery recycling company and
[652]
one of the first dedicated companies
[654]
seeing the incredible market they're
[655]
going to have in the future with
[657]
millions of evs getting on the road in
[659]
the next few years those batteries will
[661]
eventually need recycling proper
[662]
recycling formed back into battery cells
[664]
for new evs will be essential and
[666]
profitable and their large new facility
[668]
outside reno nevada is already under
[670]
construction they are expected to
[672]
produce critical ingredients for the
[673]
production of cells from recycled
[675]
batteries there and this will be one of
[676]
the first us facilities to produce some
[678]
of these key ingredients for evs now
[681]
it's reported that redwood materials
[682]
plans to spend 3.5 billion dollars on
[685]
this battery facility quote
[686]
five-year-old redwood materials is
[688]
ramping up production of anode and
[690]
cathode components to 100 gigawatt hours
[692]
by 2025 enough to supply batteries for 1
[695]
million evs a year then to 500 gigawatt
[698]
hours by 2030 enough to supply 5 million
[702]
evs a year or more redwood materials is
[704]
already partnered with ford and
[706]
panasonic holdings corp to help build a
[708]
closed-loop battery ecosystem that will
[710]
lower costs but in the future with
[712]
volumes like this tesla could very well
[714]
enter the mix elon musk has been very
[716]
clear that regardless of their work on
[717]
4680 battery cells they want suppliers
[720]
to scale up as much as possible back in
[722]
may redwoods said they aimed to start
[724]
production of copper foil used for
[726]
electric vehicle battery anodes at its
[728]
nevada facility by the end of 2023
[730]
adding that panasonic corp would be the
[733]
first customer for the anodes this is
[734]
very big news and very well could mean
[736]
that in the coming years redwood
[738]
materials not only help secure battery
[740]
supply for new ev players helps to
[742]
recycle old cells and create a closed
[744]
loop but also partners with tesla to
[746]
help increase battery supply even
[748]
further all of these developments like
[749]
battery recycling and new chemistry from
[751]
catl lead in the long view to cheaper
[754]
and cheaper electric vehicles ultimately
[756]
in the very long view as well they lead
[758]
to an ecosystem that no longer requires
[760]
mining next up today some updates from
[762]
other automakers hyundai has confirmed
[764]
that they plan to build a small electric
[766]
car that will be available for less than
[768]
twenty thousand dollars in classic
[769]
automaker fashion though it sounds like
[771]
it will be only for the european market
[773]
hyundai said it will be a
[774]
battery-powered mini car priced at
[776]
twenty thousand euros which today is
[778]
around twenty thousand dollars it will
[780]
take some time for them to develop and
[781]
it will be tough to sell profitably but
[783]
they said everybody in the industry
[785]
knows the target of this kind of vehicle
[787]
is 20 000 euros the car they are aiming
[789]
to replace with this new electric option
[791]
is the hyundai i-10 a very small
[794]
four-door car that they sell in europe
[796]
india and other locations for now when
[798]
it comes out this will likely compete
[799]
with other cars like it like the honda e
[802]
but by the time it comes there will
[803]
hopefully be a few more affordable ev
[805]
options on the market of course tesla
[807]
has talked about their own 25 000 ev but
[809]
so has ford vw and more for vw though
[812]
they had a big shake up this week with
[814]
the removal of herbert diese as their
[816]
ceo he has been instrumental in their
[818]
shift to electrification so this
[819]
surprises many but vw is planning to
[821]
launch a fully electric pickup truck for
[823]
the us by 2026 this will be launched
[826]
with the scout brand and they tweeted
[828]
saying scout on its way to
[829]
electrification the new brand will
[831]
launch a fully electric pickup truck in
[833]
the usa in 2026 this underlines our
[836]
ambitions to become a major player in
[838]
the u.s market they also note in the
[839]
youtube video description that the new
[841]
car will be designed developed and
[843]
produced there for us customers very
[845]
exciting to see a serious effort going
[847]
forward with a true electric pickup from
[849]
a major brand and many are excited to
[851]
see the scout brand resurrected likely
[853]
this will be mostly taking on the rivian
[855]
r1t but a lot could change before 2026
[858]
regarding rivian though they are taking
[859]
a similar software approach as tesla the
[861]
vehicle infotainment system is designed
[863]
and built in house by rivian as opposed
[865]
to utilizing apple carplay or android
[868]
auto many tesla owners have wanted these
[869]
integrations so naturally rivian owners
[871]
are asking for the same but this week
[873]
they said we believe that to create a
[875]
truly incredible digital experience an
[877]
integrated platform that is optimized
[879]
for our vehicles is the better path
[881]
while we do not currently support apple
[882]
carplay or android auto integrations
[885]
stay tuned to our newsletter and story
[887]
blog postings for further insights into
[889]
various features essentially i think
[890]
this statement could have come from
[892]
tesla or rivien they appear to share a
[894]
similar viewpoint here on some level
[896]
they don't want to partner with or be
[897]
tied down by another company's software
[899]
at the end of the day though they want
[900]
to design every part of the vehicle to
[902]
work perfectly together while some field
[904]
tesla's infotainment or rivien's isn't
[906]
at that point yet those companies prefer
[908]
to work on it themselves and improve it
[910]
over time with software updates over at
[912]
gm the launch of the cadillac lyric has
[914]
brought an interesting discount option
[916]
in exchange for a 5500 discount
[918]
customers must sign an nda and agree to
[921]
let gm track how they use their car
[923]
quote as we transform our business the
[925]
launch of our first all-electric vehicle
[927]
lyric provides cadillac some unique
[929]
learning opportunities therefore we have
[931]
engaged a small group of early customers
[933]
who agree to share their vehicle
[935]
information and customer behaviors
[937]
cadillac will use these learnings to
[938]
elevate the experience for all our
[940]
customers reportedly about 20 customers
[942]
were chosen for the program this is a
[944]
very interesting thing to see but
[946]
ultimately i think this data collection
[947]
will be very important for gm i'd just
[949]
be curious at what level they are
[951]
tracking usage and how that may differ
[953]
from what tesla collects from their
[954]
fleet already the follow-up to the lyric
[956]
the solicit has been unveiled and it
[958]
will be positioned as an ultra luxury
[960]
car the cellistique is expected to cost
[963]
three hundred thousand dollars when it
[964]
goes on sale and it will be a fully
[966]
electric competitor to brands like
[967]
bentley and rolls-royce definitely an
[969]
interesting car for them to bring out
[971]
and we'll have to see if or when it gets
