How to Calculate Unemployment - YouTube

Channel: Economics with Dr. A

[12]
today we're going to continue our discussion about unemployment
[15]
we're going to talk about one of my favorite days of the month
[19]
usually on a Thursday night I can't get to sleep in anticipation
[24]
for this Friday
[33]
one of my favorite days of the month is Jobs Friday
[36]
Jobs Friday is the first Friday of every month it's when the Bureau of Labor
[40]
Statistics announces the unemployment rate for the
[43]
previous month
[50]
the BLS is responsible for making sure the unemployment rate is accurately
[54]
reported reported consistently and reported
[57]
frequently understanding what happens in labor
[61]
markets allows us to have a better idea of what's happening in the overall economy
[77]
during the month the BLS samples sixty thousand households
[81]
in two thousand different geographic regions
[85]
these households are made up of roughly 110,000 individuals every month
[90]
the BLS replaces a quarter of the households
[94]
and no household can be in the data more than four consecutive months
[99]
based on the answers of the survey the BLS estimates this
[102]
total number of people unemployed in the U.S.
[105]
and what the unemployment rate is then using this information the BLS
[111]
calculates several measures of unemployment the most popular one that
[114]
is tracked is the u3 unemployment rate economists
[117]
actually track several measures of unemployment and
[121]
that's how the unemployment data is collected
[123]
the BLS uses this data to separate people into different categories
[130]
the total U.S. population is roughly 330 million people
[135]
first important definition is the working age population
[139]
it includes civilians above the age of 15
[143]
that are not institutionalized the military is excluded from
[148]
unemployment and labor force calculations
[152]
that group is then split into the labor force and
[155]
not in the labor force not in the labor force is defined as
[160]
students homemakers retirees discouraged workers
[165]
the labor force is then split into two different groups
[168]
those that are employed and those that are unemployed
[172]
using this information we can then calculate the unemployment rate
[179]
using this information we can then calculate the unemployment rate
[183]
by dividing the unemployed by the labor force
[186]
and multiplying it by a 100 this is how the u3 calculation of unemployment
[192]
rate is done a 30-year graph of the u3 unemployment
[196]
rate looks like this
[201]
as I mentioned the u3 unemployment rate is the most popular
[204]
measure of unemployment it and it is the one that is usually referenced in the news
[215]
after two months of unprecedented increases U.S. unemployment rate took a
[220]
surprising turn in May it went down this dip was a hopeful sign
[224]
that the economy might be bouncing back from Coronavirus lockdowns
[229]
but that dip wasn't universal black unemployment ticked upwards
[233]
it declined in June but not at the same rate as unemployment overall
[239]
this follows a decade where the unemployment gap between white and black
[242]
workers has been narrowing but the recent unemployment figures
[246]
reveal the financial fragility there are other unemployment rates that
[251]
we also keep track of the BLS reports u1 through u6 every
[257]
month each measure helps us learn more about
[259]
the different segments of the labor market
[274]
another measure that the BLS provides is the labor force participation rate
[278]
it measures the labor force as a fraction of
[281]
working age population and it is measured by dividing the labor force
[286]
by the working age population and then multiplying it by a 100
[292]
the past 30 years of data shows us that the labor force
[295]
participation rate hovers around 63% during recessions the labor
[301]
force participation rate falls as more people exit the labor market and shift
[306]
towards education or other activities that are not in the
[309]
labor market the labor force participation rate is
[313]
also sensitive to the population pyramid in countries where the population is
[317]
aging the labor force participation rate will be lower as people retire
[323]
they exit the labor force
[341]
now you know more about unemployment more importantly
[344]
you know about my favorite day of the month Jobs Friday
