Egalitarianism vs. Complementarianism | Women Pastors Today? - YouTube
Channel: THEOLOGY 101
[0]
today i'll be comparing the views
[1]
between those who believe women can be
[3]
pastors
[4]
and those who do not hello everyone
[8]
welcome to theology 101 my name is
[10]
andrew kim and this channel exists to
[12]
teach christian doctrine in everyday
[13]
language
[14]
today i'm starting a new series that
[16]
will compare differing views within
[18]
christianity
[19]
now i want to be clear that all the
[20]
views i'll be talking about
[22]
are within the realm of orthodoxy the
[24]
disagreements i'll be highlighting
[26]
have to do with secondary issues not the
[29]
primary foundational issues of the
[31]
christian faith these are things that
[32]
brothers and sisters in christ might
[34]
disagree upon
[35]
but it's not something that we should
[37]
call someone else a heretic over
[38]
also the purpose of this series is not
[40]
to declare a winner but is to inform you
[42]
so that you would understand that
[43]
differing views within christianity
[45]
my desire is that christians will stop
[47]
unfairly criticizing people who have
[49]
different views in them
[50]
so my hope is to fairly portray these
[53]
two views
[54]
over the issue i'm going to be
[55]
highlighting and that is the issue of
[57]
woman pastors
[58]
the two views are called egalitarianism
[61]
and complementarianism egalitarianism is
[64]
a view that men and women are not only
[65]
equal before god
[67]
but they are also equal in their
[68]
function and authority
[70]
both at home and in the church now i
[72]
want to be clear that egalitarianism
[74]
does not deny gender differences but
[76]
they believe that these differences
[77]
should not allow a hierarchy of
[79]
authority and structure within the home
[81]
and the church complementarianism
[83]
views that men and women are equal
[85]
before god but
[86]
complement one another in their roles
[88]
and functions in the home and church
[91]
both positions affirm that men and women
[92]
are equally valuable before god but they
[95]
differ when it comes to the distinct
[96]
roles and functions associated with each
[98]
gender now that i have a clear
[100]
understanding of each view
[101]
let the debate begin there are so many
[105]
passages that talks about male
[107]
headship in the bible look at first
[109]
corinthians chapter 14 verses 33-34
[111]
the woman should keep silent in the
[113]
churches for they are not permitted to
[114]
speak
[115]
but should be in submission as the law
[117]
also says
[118]
then look at first timothy chapter 2
[120]
verses 12. i do not permit a woman to
[122]
teach or to exercise authority over a
[124]
man
[124]
rather she is to remain quiet paul even
[126]
says that women should submit to their
[128]
own husbands in ephesians chapter 5
[130]
verses 22 to 24.
[131]
why submit to your own husbands as to
[133]
the lord for the husband is the head of
[135]
the wife even as christ is ahead of the
[137]
church
[138]
his body and is himself its savior now
[141]
as the church
[142]
submits to christ so also wives should
[144]
submit in everything to their husbands
[146]
from a plane reading a scripture it
[148]
seems clear
[150]
that women should submit to men in the
[152]
home and in the church
[154]
you're right in thinking that the plain
[155]
reading of scripture seems to support
[157]
your view
[158]
but we have to remember the context of
[160]
these passages if you notice several of
[162]
these passages are preceded or followed
[163]
by passages that describe
[165]
slaves submitting to their masters so to
[168]
argue that the hierarchical structure
[170]
portrayed in these passages should be
[172]
applied today is very troublesome
[174]
because you would agree that we should
[176]
have slavery today even though there are
[177]
slavery in the bible and you would agree
[179]
that the only reason why there's
[180]
commandments regarding slavery in the
[182]
bible is because of the historical
[184]
context of his time
[185]
but that is not something that we should
[187]
continue to do today this is what i also
[189]
believe when it comes to patriarchy
[191]
the commandments were given in a
[193]
specific context regarding the
[194]
patriarchal system that was there
[197]
but that system shouldn't continue today
[199]
to be clear slave in the new testament
[201]
is not the same as african chattel
[202]
slavery
[203]
slavery in the new testament was
[204]
indentured servitude and it was based
[207]
not on race
[208]
but on money so you can't say that the
[210]
slavery in the bible is the same as
[211]
modern day slavery or that god even
[213]
approves of slavery right
[214]
but christians today will still agree
[216]
that we shouldn't continue even the
[218]
slavery that was portrayed in the bible
[220]
even if it wasn't based on rape and the
[221]
fact that god doesn't
[223]
explicitly forbid slavery doesn't mean
[225]
that we should continue it
[226]
right you agree that god is speaking in
[229]
a specific historical
[230]
context and he accommodates his message
[233]
to a people at a certain time
[235]
but he also gives a glimpse of his
[237]
kingdom standard which says that slaves
[239]
and masters
[240]
are to be equal ideally god does the
[242]
same thing for patriarchy he also gives
[244]
a glimpse of his kingdom standard where
[246]
men and women will be
[247]
equal ideally this is why paul says this
[250]
in galatians chapter 3 verse 28 there is
[252]
neither jew nor greek there is neither
[254]
slave nor free
[255]
there is no male and female for you are
[258]
all one in christ
[259]
jesus although god does not explicitly
[262]
condemn slavery and patriarchy
[264]
he does set a trajectory where the
[266]
church is to eventually realize that
[268]
they should get rid of those structures
[271]
and make a structure where all men and
[273]
women
[273]
master and slaves are equal the problem
[276]
with you comparing slavery to patriarchy
[279]
is that
[279]
slavery was never rooted in divine order
[282]
biblical authors do say that male
[284]
headship is rooted in his design
[286]
paul mentions this in 1st timothy
[288]
chapter 2 verses 12-13
[290]
when he gives a reason on why women
[292]
shouldn't preach he doesn't mention
[293]
anything about his historical context he
[296]
actually says it has to do with how
[297]
god created men and women from the very
[299]
beginning paul says i do not permit a
[301]
woman
[302]
to teach or to exercise authority over a
[304]
man rather she is to remain
[306]
quiet for adam was formed first
[310]
then eve because this is a creation
[312]
design issue
[313]
this cannot be dismissed simply based on
[316]
the historical context of the time this
[317]
is why
[318]
even before paul's time levitical
[320]
priests were all male
[321]
this is why jesus 12 apostles were all
[324]
male
[324]
there is a consistent pattern where god
[327]
establishes
[328]
male authority and headship in the
[330]
church and even
[331]
in the home if you look at 1st timothy
[333]
chapter 2 and titus 1 the qualifications
[335]
of an elder are that they are to be men
[337]
first of all there's no mention of
[338]
subordination in the creation account
[340]
until you get to genesis chapter 3. in
[342]
genesis chapter 3 verse 16 where god
[344]
outlines his punishment for woman that
[346]
is where you see
[347]
men have authority over women also in
[349]
that context god is not talking about
[351]
the church he's talking about
[352]
the context of marriage also this
[354]
passage is not a commandment but it's a
[356]
prophecy which eventually gets fulfilled
[359]
over time now you mentioned that all the
[360]
levitical priests were male
[362]
but when you get to the new testament
[363]
you see that women are allowed to become
[365]
priests even in the old testament you
[367]
see that women can hold positions of
[368]
authority
[369]
a king's wife had authority over the
[371]
male slaves right moses's sister miriam
[374]
was considered a prophetess
[375]
and she even wrote part of scripture her
[378]
song is recorded in there
[379]
deborah was a prophetess as well as
[381]
halda isaiah's wife and anna in the new
[384]
testament you even see that priscilla
[386]
teaches apollos how to teach the bible
[388]
although paul says that woman shouldn't
[390]
teach he does allow them to publicly
[392]
pray and prophesy
[394]
clearly paul isn't given this blanket
[395]
prohibition that women are not allowed
[397]
to
[398]
say anything in the church or exercise
[399]
any type of authority
[401]
he simply forbids women to disturb the
[403]
worship service which was apparently
[405]
what was going on in first corinthians
[407]
so let me ask you
[408]
are you saying that christian men should
[410]
never listen to any christian woman
[411]
teach the bible
[412]
now some people on my cat might say that
[415]
women should never teach the bible to
[416]
men in any circumstances
[419]
but i would say that the majority don't
[420]
feel that way many people in my camp do
[422]
believe that women can teach the bible
[424]
just in certain contexts but what we all
[426]
agree upon
[428]
is that women shouldn't hold a position
[430]
of authority in the church
[431]
this means that women can still practice
[434]
and exercise
[435]
their spiritual gifts of teaching they
[437]
just have to do it under the leadership
[439]
and authority of
[440]
male elders or male pastors so we
[443]
wouldn't prohibit them from writing
[444]
theology
[445]
or teaching bible studies or even
[448]
preaching from the pulpits
[449]
as long as they're under the authority
[450]
of male elders and so our view says that
[453]
women
[453]
cannot hold a certain position in the
[455]
church but it doesn't prohibit them from
[457]
practicing their spiritual gifts now the
[459]
problem with your view is that you seem
[461]
to pick and choose which passages you
[462]
want to apply for today which seems
[464]
problematic when a passage doesn't fit
[466]
your view then you explain away
[468]
talking about historical context and i
[470]
feel like this undermines the authority
[472]
of scripture
[472]
well you also pick and choose by the way
[475]
why is it that women are forbidden from
[477]
position of
[478]
authority but they are allowed to speak
[480]
nowhere does the bible spell out the
[481]
distinction between
[482]
teaching and speaking and between leader
[484]
and pastor it seems like you are
[486]
splitting 1st timothy chapter 2 verse
[488]
12.
[488]
the part of the verse that talks about
[490]
women shouldn't speak you say that
[492]
only fits the historical context and
[493]
that women can teach
[495]
but then the part that says that women
[496]
shouldn't hold position of authority you
[498]
said that should still be applied today
[499]
aren't you also picking and choosing
[501]
what to apply for today if you respect
[503]
the authority of scripture then why
[504]
don't you force women to cover their
[506]
head during worship
[507]
why don't you prohibit women from
[508]
wearing jewelry why don't you make women
[510]
completely silent the church
[512]
you say that all of these commandments
[513]
don't apply today because they only fit
[515]
a certain historical context and that is
[517]
exactly what i'm saying about male
[518]
headship
[519]
listen we don't disagree on the bible
[521]
having authority i also respect the
[523]
bible
[524]
and both of us seem to pick and choose
[525]
at least in our opinion certain passages
[527]
to apply today
[528]
we disagree with how to apply the bible
[533]
now what view did you find more
[534]
convincing leave a comment below and let
[536]
me know
[536]
please remember to be respectful because
[538]
we are all brothers and sisters in
[540]
christ
[540]
and we're all within the realm of
[542]
orthodoxy if you found this video
