I was so addicted to gambling that it
[5]
took over my life
[7]
[Music]
[15]
Adam Osmond was once one of the most
[18]
prolific gamblers in the US this is
[21]
probably about a million dollar but then
[24]
again that's only the last two years of
[26]
my gambling that's just a small part of
[29]
me I came here to go to college and I've
[33]
been here ever since I got married have
[35]
my children and I've been here almost 30
[38]
years now the tragic thing with Adam he
[44]
used his abilities he used his hard work
[46]
and he fell victim to one of the other
[50]
things in America what I've heard called
[54]
the jackpot many Adam used to run to
[58]
convenience stores in Connecticut
[60]
between 2002 and 2008 he started
[64]
spending thousands of dollars on the
[65]
lottery in his store every week and the
[68]
only reason why I was in that business
[70]
was just to support my addiction
[73]
this is $10.00 it has never even been
[76]
scratched these are 30 dollars a ticket
[79]
I will buy them by the book each books
[82]
25 or 30 and you multiply 30 30 that's
[86]
about $900 so I was hiding the tickets
[89]
from my family and I was so addicted to
[92]
gambling that it took over my life he
[97]
knew what he was doing was destroying
[99]
himself and his family
[103]
in March 2008 Adams suffered a nervous
[106]
breakdown after over a decade of
[109]
compulsive gambling the first week I
[112]
printed about fifty four thousand
[114]
tickets
[114]
none of them was cash you didn't even
[117]
check II you cannot even possibly
[119]
achieve all those numbers the kinetic
[121]
allowed early called me because I didn't
[123]
pay for it I couldn't pay for it I was
[124]
crying for help by lo they supposed to
[127]
shut my machine by that time in the next
[130]
week I printed tickets again non-stop
[133]
for three weeks
[134]
Adam printed over two hundred and fifty
[136]
thousand dollars worth of lotto tickets
[138]
before his machine was finally shut down
[141]
the Connecticut lottery did not share my
[143]
machine off and when I was late payment
[146]
or even when I print all those tickets
[147]
because I was very hot valuable to them
[151]
and I was one of their best customers he
[155]
was the first and only gambling addict
[157]
to be convicted for printing lottery
[159]
tickets it's really sad because you know
[162]
this used to be my family in here and
[164]
now they are not here and you know when
[167]
I look at it around the house after
[178]
being charged
[178]
Adam was ordered to pay the sum of the
[180]
tickets printed despite never cashing
[183]
any of them in his wife and three
[186]
children three girls had to go to
[189]
Virginia to live with relatives because
[192]
of his financial world and he sends
[194]
money to them and he lives in squalor
[198]
because in the u.s. the odds of winning
[215]
the overall lottery are approximately
[218]
one in 258 million in Connecticut there
[222]
are up to nine lotto draws a day each
[224]
game costing between $0.50 and $5 with
[228]
scratch cards on top of this price from
[230]
one dollar up to $30 each
[233]
the Connecticut lottery does run
[235]
programs to support addicted gamblers
[237]
and a percentage of the profits go
[239]
towards government programs such as
[241]
libraries Public Safety and education
[245]
[Music]
[248]
since I stopped gambling when I hit the
[250]
bottom I pick it up a better habit when
[258]
I was gambling in my mind was always
[260]
numbers numbers I'll be driving in and
[263]
it's the bus driver of me I will pick
[265]
down numbers and say that oh you know
[266]
that bus number had three or five seven
[268]
and I will go to my store and play three
[271]
or five seven or whatever number that I
[272]
saw sunshine I run its know I run in
[276]
November 2015 seven years after his
[280]
original conviction a new judge reviewed
[282]
his case and found his original penalty
[285]
to be illegal he no longer has to pay
[289]
back the remaining money from the
[290]
uncashed tickets tell my friends I'm
[296]
running away from gambling and this time
[298]
we're running I said I'm running away
[299]
from the lottery
[305]
you
[312]
