Corona isn't just stopping you
[2]
from going to the gym to take mirror selfies.
[4]
It's also decimated the world economy.
[7]
Now, countries have been taking different approaches
[9]
to help workers during this pandemic.
[11]
You know, many countries in Europe are paying businesses
[13]
to keep their employees on the payroll even during shutdowns.
[17]
Japan has suspended most tax collection for a year.
[20]
And Russia is even allowing all of their election bots
[23]
to meddle from home.
[25]
(Russian accent): Very sweet.
[26]
(regular accent): And here in the U.S., Congress passed
[28]
a big three-trillion dollar relief package back in March,
[32]
but with the benefits of the package about to run out,
[34]
Congress has been struggling to put together something new.
[38]
Now, Democrats have been asking for another
[40]
three trillion dollars to extend and expand
[42]
the benefits that have been helping people.
[44]
And now Republicans have finally responded
[47]
with something a little less generous.
[50]
REPORTER: This morning, with tens of millions of Americans
[52]
out of work, Senate Republicans are proposing
[54]
to slash emergency unemployment benefits by $400,
[58]
a plan that would cut that extra federal payment
[61]
from $600 to $200 a week, with Republicans arguing
[64]
additional payouts would discourage jobless Americans
[68]
from returning to work.
[70]
In certain cases, people were paid more to stay home
[72]
than they were to work, and I think that's something
[75]
that the American public understands.
[76]
We're not gonna use taxpayer money
[78]
to pay people more to stay home.
[81]
Man, I know Steve Mnuchin
[83]
speaks like a ventriloquist dummy,
[86]
but sometimes I wish someone would
[88]
shove their hand up his ass and make him say the right things.
[90]
Because, look, it is true that some people have been
[93]
earning more from these extra benefits than they were making
[96]
at their jobs, but that's only because a lot of people
[99]
in America don't make a living wage at their jobs.
[102]
Like, I'm honestly surprised this White House
[103]
is so against paying people not to work.
[107]
I mean, they've been fine doing it for the past four years.
[110]
Guys, if anything,
[111]
going back to work too soon
[113]
is what spreads coronavirus,
[115]
which then makes it harder for everyone to go back to work.
[119]
So the best way to go back to work
[121]
is to not go back to work.
[123]
If anything, the government should be sending everyone
[124]
an HBO Max password and a giant bag of weed.
[127]
It's the responsible thing to do.
[129]
And here's the thing: you can always argue
[131]
about whether it's good policy or bad policy
[133]
to just give people money.
[135]
I mean, it's good policy,
[136]
but you can argue about it if you feel like it.
[139]
But one thing that's raising eyebrows is that while
[141]
the Republicans are saying they can't afford to give more money
[144]
to laid-off workers, they are managing to open up
[147]
their wallets for some way more questionable expenses.
[151]
REPORTER: The bill is also coming under intense criticism
[153]
for $1.75 billion
[155]
allocated for a new FBI building,
[158]
something McConnell said was included
[160]
at the request of the White House.
[162]
The president has called for the rebuilding of the FBI building
[165]
in downtown D.C. to occur on the same plot of land
[169]
in which it currently exists.
[171]
And why that's significant is because the Trump Hotel
[173]
is right across the street from the FBI building,
[177]
so the concerns are the president is trying to keep
[180]
that property controlled by the federal government
[182]
to prevent another hotel from coming in there, potentially,
[186]
and taking away business from the Trump Hotel.
[189]
Yes, while unemployment benefits are being cut,
[192]
Republicans have managed to find
[194]
$1.75 billion
[196]
to rebuild the FBI headquarters in its current location
[200]
instead of allowing it to move.
[202]
All of this was a direct request from Donald Trump,
[205]
because Trump knows that as long as the FBI
[207]
stays across the street from his hotel in D.C.,
[210]
nobody can build a competing hotel next to his.
[213]
And, you know, this is what's so frustrating about Trump.
[216]
When you tell him you can stop corona by putting on a mask,
[219]
he can't follow the logic.
[221]
Oh, it's too complicated. I can't brea...
[222]
I don't even kno...
[224]
But then when he's working on a grift
[225]
that'll make himself money,
[226]
suddenly he can see the Matrix.
[228]
You put that one there, the hotel, get it...
[230]
Carry the five, billions of dollars.
[232]
Like, I find it so bizarre that Trump is president,
[235]
but he's still constantly pulling all of these scams.
[238]
Like, what does he need the money for?
[240]
The man lives rent-free, he only eats stuff
[242]
off the dollar menu and his favorite hobby
[244]
is staying inside watching TV.
[246]
Trump could finance his whole lifestyle
[248]
with lemonade stand money.
[250]
Either way, at this point, Trump has done so many
[252]
corrupt schemes, eventually he's gonna run out of lines to cross.
[255]
Yeah, he's gonna need to seduce Mike Pence
[257]
just to keep things interesting.
[259]
Well, that's our show for tonight, but before we go,
[260]
I just wanted to remind you that America is facing
[263]
a nationwide poll worker shortage,
[265]
and because most poll workers are over 60
[268]
and with COVID still in the air,
[270]
they are understandably not showing up.
[272]
But fewer poll workers means fewer polling stations are open,
[275]
and that means there's gonna be longer lines
[277]
that not everybody can afford to stay and wait in,
[280]
especially in communities of color.
[282]
The good news is, though, most poll working is paid,
[285]
and in some states you can be as young as 16 to do the job.
[289]
