Channel: The FAFSA Guru
[0]
hey everyone Tina here the FAFSA guru and today I聽
want to share with you three FAFSA mistakes that聽聽
[7]
can cost you a whole lot of money it's August聽
kids are getting ready to go back to school and聽聽
[12]
before we know it FAFSA season is going to be here聽
October 1st of the earliest that you can fill out聽聽
[18]
your FAFSA for the 2020 2021 school year I work聽
with a lot of families and helping them complete聽聽
[24]
the FAFSA and some of the more common mistakes I聽
see I'm going to go over with you today because聽聽
[29]
it can really cost you a lot when it comes to聽
financial aid so the first is not filling it out聽聽
[35]
there is a lot of research out there showing that聽
forty to fifty percent of families are not filling聽聽
[44]
out a FAFSA because they don't think they're going聽
to qualify for any money I encourage everyone to聽聽
[48]
fill one out always you know not all financial aid聽
is based on just need and there are some colleges聽聽
[54]
that award some institutional scholarship money聽
and they use the FAFSA information to do that聽聽
[59]
federal student loans are a big part of financial聽
aid they're low-interest loans that are not based聽聽
[67]
on credit that students can get in their own聽
name which can really help with financial aid聽聽
[71]
but if you don't fill out the FAFSA they can't聽
even get awarded those so that's mistake number聽聽
[77]
one getting the FAFSA completed is crucial聽
it's free and everybody should fill one out聽聽
[83]
the second mistake that I see often is people聽
filling out the asset information incorrectly聽聽
[89]
this is big because the government takes into聽
consideration your income along with the amount聽聽
[96]
of assets you have when determining what they聽
call your expected Family Contribution which is聽聽
[101]
what the financial aid offices use the financial聽
aid office uses to determine how much money to聽聽
[106]
award you so filling this out incorrectly can cost聽
you a lot of money some of the biggest mistakes I聽聽
[113]
see are people reporting their home value as an聽
asset the value of the home you live in is one聽聽
[119]
asset that is protected on the FAFSA you do not聽
have to report so don't report that another asset聽聽
[126]
that you do not have to report is retirement so a聽
lot of people accidentally put in their retirement聽聽
[131]
and you know middle-aged parents could have a聽
significant amount of money put aside in that and聽聽
[135]
if they list that as an asset it's going to really聽
count against you know their kiddo in terms of聽聽
[141]
financial aid so do not count the home you live in聽
do not count retirement and then one of the other聽聽
[147]
big asset mistakes I see is people reporting their聽
business value so if you're self-employed and own聽聽
[154]
a business you file taxes when it comes to the聽
income section you have to report your business聽聽
[159]
income or loss but in the asset section it asks聽
about the value of your business and you only聽聽
[166]
have to report the value if you have a hundred聽
or more employees very very important a lot of聽聽
[173]
people think because they own a business they're聽
self-employed and they reported their income that聽聽
[178]
they have to report the value of their business聽
also no that's not the case and then lastly one聽聽
[185]
of the other common mistakes I see is parents聽
who are divorced or separated filling out the聽聽
[189]
FAFSA incorrectly if you're divorced or you're聽
separated and it does not have to be a legal聽聽
[195]
separation you're just you know you just recently聽
separated and you're not living together only one聽聽
[199]
parent needs to provide their information on the聽
FAFSA and that would be the parent with whom the聽聽
[204]
child resided with most in the last year so the聽
custodial parent is the one who should be filling聽聽
[210]
out the FAFSA on behalf of the child a lot of聽
parents who are recently separated when they're聽聽
[215]
filling out the FAFSA using like prior year tax聽
information they think because they filed a joint聽聽
[220]
tax return they have to use both of the incomes聽
on the return which is not accurate there's a聽聽
[227]
question that asks on the FAFSA as of today are聽
you divorced or separated if that applies to you聽聽
[233]
you would say yes and then you would list the聽
date of the divorce or separation and again you聽聽
[239]
do not have to be officially or legally separated聽
in order to report that if you're no longer living聽聽
[245]
together then that applies so those are three聽
big mistakes I see happen all the time filling聽聽
[252]
the FAFSA out incorrectly can cost you a lot聽
of money so just be careful when you're doing聽聽
[257]
that and for more information about the services I聽
provide feel free to check out my website I have a聽聽

[274]

[281]
