Q&A with Ishak Alaton- You have a very different approach to philanthropy. What is your inspiration? - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[15]
I created, with deceased Nejat Eczac谋ba艧谋
[22]
nearly 40 years ago an institution called TESEV
[26]
(T眉rkiye Ekonomik Sosyal Et眉tler Vakf谋)
[28]
It is a foundation. Then about 12 years ago
[33]
with my good old friend, George Soros,
[36]
we created the Open Society of Turkey.
[40]
(T眉rk A莽谋k Toplum Vakf谋)
[45]
which is also funded by New York Open Society
[50]
Now, why did I choose a different path?
[52]
Because of my background.
[55]
I spent in Sweden nearly 3 years.
[59]
I went to Sweden after my military service
[62]
and I was working as a welder worker
[65]
in Murtala Bergstrand*
[68]
And then I became a member of
[72]
the Social Democratic Party,
[75]
youth movement in Stockholm.
[79]
And I used to go to their evening meetings
[82]
and I met all the young generation of Swedes
[87]
for this Social Democratic Party.
[89]
Social democracy in Sweden has been
[91]
extremely successful.
[94]
When you say social democracy, it has
[97]
a social aspect then it has a democratic aspect.
[101]
Democracy in Sweden, as you probably know
[104]
is one of the highest with highest respect
[108]
for human beings and especially for women.
[113]
So, the 3 years I spent in Sweden have
[118]
made "me". I became me, myself in Sweden.
[124]
I became part of the Swedish mentality.
[127]
And with this I brought back all these
[131]
principles of transparency, honesty
[136]
respectability, good name,
[140]
good relationship with other human beings.
[143]
And then having this urge to serve
[148]
the society you are in.
[151]
And then instead of going the normal way
[154]
of building schools and building universities,
[158]
already at a very young age,
[161]
as I said 40 years ago, I though that
[163]
I would contribute to the elevation
[168]
of the standard of democratic thinking
[173]
of new generation of Turks
[177]
which I make part of, I belong.
[181]
This was a kind of a search for a better life
[188]
because I had a very difficult life during
[191]
my young days with my father having
[195]
gone into bankruptcy because of 'Varlik Vergisi'
[200]
a terrible mistreatment of all the minorities
[205]
Armenians, Greeks, and Jews.
[207]
So, he went bankrupted.
[210]
That's the reason why I couldn't go to any
[213]
university. I hardly had the opportunity to
[216]
finish the Saint Michel Lycee.
[218]
This has been a quest throughout my life.
[222]
I had a mentor in this small town Mutala.
[226]
He was an aristocrat doctor.
[230]
Very rich aristocratic family but he was
[234]
taking care of the workers in that
[236]
small town in Sweden.
[239]
And we somehow became friends.
[243]
Most probably because he had a very
[245]
beautiful daughter. (Laughs)
[249]
He became very close to me.
[252]
He really liked me and one day he said
[254]
something which I never forgot, he said,
[257]
"I am analyzing your way of thinking"
[260]
he said and "I am convinced that you will
[264]
one day become a very successful businessman"
[268]
"You have this in your genes" he said.
[272]
"And being very successful, you will also
[274]
become very rich. But, if becoming rich
[278]
will put limits to your ability to express
[285]
your thoughts freely then you will find out
[290]
that the money you have created or
[292]
the wealth you have created has become
[295]
a golden cage.
[297]
A prison where you have gone willingly.
[302]
So, be careful not to fall into the trap
[307]
of creating your own prison.
[311]
And I never forgot this. He became my mentor
[317]
throughout life in this direction.
[319]
That's the reason why I appear
[323]
very often on TV programs and I talk about
[327]
democracy and human rights and
[330]
peaceful negotiations in the South East
[333]
and coming to a peaceful solution and then
[337]
equality and not being, as I said, 'the other'
[342]
and not seeing me Yahudi then human being,
[349]
but human being first and then maybe.
[353]
And this is a quest throughout life .
[357]
And it gives me a kick to see that I progress.
[363]
I can see that the new generation
[366]
is changing.
[367]
Not only because of this instilling of
[370]
a mental change, but also because
[375]
the world is changing. The whole world.
[377]
Now go to London, you will see more
[380]
foreigners than Londoners.
[384]
The same thing is happening here.
[386]
So, I am a very happy man in this respect
[389]
that I did not build a university.
[393]
I am building a lycee in 脟atalca
[397]
for biotechnology, medical research
[402]
for youngsters.
[403]
But I'm not aiming at any university.
