Is a Tesla Powerwall 2 Worth the Money? - YouTube
Channel: Ben Sullins
[0]
I just got my tesla powerwall is
[1]
installed and sort of in love with them
[4]
it's just such a cool feeling to know
[6]
that you no longer need the energy grid
[8]
for you know your daily life however
[10]
when I started to look into the data it
[13]
came clear to me that not everyone
[16]
should buy one of these so I wanted to
[18]
dig into just kind of my experience so
[20]
far what I've learned and maybe help
[22]
guide you on whether or not a tesla
[24]
powerwall makes sense for your home
[26]
let's dive in the latest version of the
[39]
tesla powerwall also called the tesla
[41]
powerwall 2 has just under 14 kilowatt
[44]
hours of energy 13.5 is what they list
[47]
and this is part of the tesla eco system
[50]
where if you get solar and you have the
[52]
home batteries and then you have the
[53]
cars you have a lot of freedom and
[56]
independence based on just the stuff
[58]
you're generating and storing at your
[60]
own home most houses use around 28
[62]
kilowatt hours of energy per day so with
[65]
two of these at 27 kilowatt hours more
[68]
or less
[68]
you're pretty good to be a full day
[70]
off-grid and then of course within those
[73]
27 hours if the Sun comes out even a
[76]
little bit your solar panels should
[77]
charge them back up giving you this kind
[79]
of off-grid energy independent feeling
[82]
now typically these run around 7,000
[84]
dollars with installation every install
[86]
is different so when you go through this
[88]
process you have to fill out a form take
[90]
pictures of lots of things and send it
[92]
to them and then they come back with a
[94]
quote I earned these two power walls
[96]
from the Tesla referral program back in
[97]
2017 thank you to everyone that used my
[100]
code because these are super cool and as
[103]
I mentioned I am really really stoked on
[105]
them now the ones I got were the white
[106]
ones these are the standard ones you buy
[108]
you may have seen some other folks that
[109]
received the red ones that were actually
[112]
physically signed by JB and Elon and
[114]
Franz that's super cool but it actually
[117]
kind of worked out better because I
[118]
think the white ones look better and as
[121]
you'll see when we talk about
[122]
installation we had to put them outside
[123]
there just be kind of a shame to have
[126]
these really fancy ones with a hand
[128]
signature sitting out getting rained on
[130]
every day
[131]
speaking of installation it actually was
[133]
kind of
[134]
the original idea I had was to put them
[136]
in the garage but the garage where they
[139]
would be located was over 100 feet from
[141]
where the electrical panel is my house
[143]
built in the 1950s put the electrical
[146]
panel kind of on the opposite end and so
[148]
it was gonna be too far because there's
[150]
a communication wire that has to run and
[152]
it runs in a very low voltage so over a
[154]
hundred feet it just doesn't really work
[156]
as well now they can change that
[158]
apparently but then they'd have to kind
[160]
of reconfigure the system and all that
[161]
and it just didn't make a whole lot of
[163]
sense to put them in the garage plus if
[164]
they are in your garage they have to
[166]
have these barriers in front of them so
[168]
you don't hit them or they have to be
[169]
amounted high enough that they would be
[171]
above the standard hood height of a
[174]
vehicle which is pretty high my garage
[177]
is pretty short so it just didn't make
[179]
sense so that plan was out the next
[181]
challenge was to figure out where to put
[182]
them outside we would just mount them on
[185]
the house however they can't be next to
[188]
a bedroom and so we had to find a place
[190]
where we didn't have a bedroom and we
[192]
could put it and so it ended up being
[195]
just right between the studio that I
[197]
used to work that I used to make these
[199]
videos from and our master bathroom it's
[201]
kind of right next to the AC unit and
[203]
it's close to where the electrical panel
[204]
is so it all made sense one of the
[207]
interesting things is that we had to
[208]
basically make a concrete pad for them
[211]
to sit on because it's not there's no
[213]
concrete there and I was able to find
[215]
one for about 50 bucks from a local
[217]
Building Supply Company so this is a tip
[219]
if you are in this boat trying to do
[221]
this like their initial thought was you
[223]
need to actually pour concrete you know
[226]
go make molds and and make a concrete
[228]
pad but a local building company here in
[231]
San Diego just had one that I could buy
[233]
for 50 bucks so I went and did that
[234]
worked out great so in addition to the
[237]
power walls the both had to have their
[239]
own AC disconnect switches then you had
[241]
to have a gateway and a whole new panel
[244]
set up with basically every circuit from
[247]
the old electrical panel rewired into
[249]
this new one and basically now the the
[252]
grid itself is upstream from the rest of
[255]
your house meaning the grid can go away
[257]
and you can still function in fact
[260]
that's how the primary function works
[262]
typically if my solar system isn't
[264]
generating enough power I am pulling
[266]
from the battery
[267]
so it's really cool and it and it does
[269]
give you the sense of independence and
[270]
freedom because in theory you could go
[272]
off grid however that doesn't really
[274]
make a whole lot of sense
[276]
one thing Tesla just added was the
[278]
ability to look at very detailed data
[280]
about how you're using your energy and
[283]
what Gloria's data it is so in the app
[286]
you can see that I have my power wall
[289]
here it's currently charging there's two
[291]
of them listed there and you can click
[294]
into the power flow which is easily my
[296]
favorite diagram of all time showing
[299]
exactly what's happening with your
[301]
energy here we're looking at over four
[303]
kilowatts of solar energy being
[305]
generated right now three point six of
[307]
that or three point five going back to
[309]
the grid so I'm I'm building up a credit
[310]
with the electric company here and point
[313]
five of it powering the stuff that's
[314]
currently used in my house and
[316]
occasionally it's powering up or it's
[318]
charging the power wall I can dive into
[320]
the the history of this and see very
[323]
detailed stats of what's happening with
[325]
all these different sources and how the
[327]
energy is flowing from one place to the
[330]
other and until recently you could only
[332]
look at today and yesterday in the app
[334]
now you can actually click and look at a
[337]
week or even a month I don't have that
[340]
much data but you can kind of go back
[342]
you know look at the lifetime of it etc
[344]
etc so they're giving you just a really
[347]
cool visualizations of ways to to
[350]
understand this data and and I love that
[352]
obviously that that's my thing but you
[355]
know prior to this you had to go to the
[357]
api's and kind of reverse engineer it so
[359]
thankfully they did this and one of the
[362]
cool things is if you don't like these
[363]
visualizations I particularly don't find
[366]
bar charts are good over time series
[368]
which is the data we're looking to here
[370]
you can download the data and obviously
[372]
I did that either way I think it's
[374]
really cool that they're giving you this
[375]
data and it's really awesome just to see
[377]
this I actually made an old iPad into
[380]
sort of an art stand with that power
[382]
flow thing so anytime we have people
[384]
over I kind of explain what's going on
[386]
it's just a really beautiful
[386]
visualization so cheers said that tells
[389]
the team for making that the bar charts
[391]
the other stuff I think can be better
[392]
but hey it's a step in the right
[394]
direction and you're freeing the data
[395]
about this which is amazing one of the
[398]
challenges I've found so far with
[400]
the powerwall is charging my car so
[404]
typically I charge at work where I have
[407]
a charger here and that kind of fills up
[409]
mine but Jenny charges our model three
[411]
at home now she doesn't drive a lot so
[413]
she doesn't charge that often you know
[414]
maybe once or twice a week at most but
[418]
when she does if you think about it the
[420]
model 3 long range has somewhere around
[422]
78 kilowatt hours of energy stored and
[426]
if she needs to fill that thing up from
[428]
from close to zero this 27 kilowatt
[431]
hours stored in the and the power walls
[433]
are just a snack that's not even you
[436]
know not even approaching enough on a
[438]
regular basis if you went to work and
[440]
came back and charged every night it
[442]
would probably be fine but essentially
[444]
what's gonna happen is we're just gonna
[445]
just hammer that battery and then have
[447]
to go to grid power now thankfully
[449]
because we're using even less grid power
[452]
than before we've built up enough
[453]
credits to where it all kind of washes
[455]
out going back to the app though there
[457]
are a few ways to set up your power wall
[459]
and I think it makes sense just to kind
[461]
of talk about these and give you my
[462]
thoughts on them I'm not sure I've had
[464]
enough experience yet to be the expert
[465]
at this or really figure out what's best
[467]
but when you go into the customize
[469]
option here you can see there are
[471]
different ways to kind of use the energy
[473]
stored in your power wall the first one
[475]
is backup only where you never really
[477]
use the the power wall except in the
[479]
case of a backup so in the case of a
[481]
storm or something like that the other
[483]
one is this self powered one where
[485]
generally all your energy is going to be
[487]
coming out of there when instead of
[489]
pulling from the grid I like this
[491]
because that means I'm just reducing the
[493]
actual load on the grid and I'm becoming
[495]
more self-sufficient now in there you
[498]
can and I've set it here to 20 percent
[500]
you can reserve a certain percent of the
[502]
battery for power outages for here in
[504]
San Diego it doesn't make a lot of sense
[506]
because we really don't have power
[507]
outages regularly but if you do you may
[510]
want to set that up to thirty forty
[511]
percent whatever really makes sense or
[513]
just go on the backup only so I choose
[515]
the self powered mode because I feel
[516]
like it's just it's just really good
[518]
being you know kind of off-grid as much
[520]
as possible now there's also this
[522]
time-based control so if I click on this
[524]
advanced one here what you'll see is it
[527]
actually will will learn the peak and
[530]
off-peak schedule and so here in San
[532]
Diego as well as many other parts of
[534]
or other parts of the country now are
[536]
based are going to this time of use
[538]
rating where you pay more for the the
[540]
peak rates versus the off-peak and this
[543]
is pretty common and you can actually
[545]
kind of design that and set it up to
[547]
match whatever your local company
[549]
charges you that way let's say here in
[551]
San Diego it's between 4:00 and 9:00
[552]
p.m. are the super high peak I think
[554]
it's like 53 cents a kilowatt hour which
[557]
is nuts you can you can say hey use the
[560]
battery during that time but 12:00 to
[563]
5:00 a.m. when the energy is much
[566]
cheaper don't worry about it go ahead
[568]
and pull from the grid just just kind of
[569]
let the battery be this actually could
[572]
save or help with that problem with
[574]
charging the car where if the car is
[576]
designed to charge between 12 and 5 a.m.
[578]
and use this mode then it may you know
[581]
not use the battery don't go straight to
[583]
the grid which seems like a better deal
[584]
so I'll have to play with this over time
[587]
and see exactly what makes sense but
[589]
right now I'm just kind of in love with
[591]
this idea of being self powered and
[593]
being off-grid as much as I can be
[595]
living in a relatively a you know
[598]
suburban kind of area and then of course
[600]
you have the storm watch which which I
[602]
kind of mentioned but they actually have
[604]
a system here that monitors the weather
[606]
patterns and looks for when there's a
[608]
storm coming up and it will it will kind
[610]
of prep the battery for that so you
[612]
don't have to really worry about you
[613]
just leave that on if there is a storm
[615]
coming that looks like it may cause
[616]
power it'll it'll adjust the the energy
[619]
flow to optimize for that so that way if
[622]
you guys do have an issue it you know
[624]
it'll be fine so really cool really
[627]
advanced you know and like I said I just
[631]
love this concept of being off-grid or
[634]
you know kind of is independent as I can
[636]
be so speaking of going off grid it
[638]
definitely is possible with solar panels
[640]
and batteries but the cost of being
[643]
connected to the grid and having it as a
[645]
reliable backup is pretty low it's 10
[647]
bucks a month and for me that that's
[650]
something that that's worth it you know
[651]
it's cheaper than Netflix and a lot of
[653]
other things you probably spend money on
[654]
and it gives you reliable backup power
[657]
but another thing you could do is if you
[659]
don't have solar right now you can take
[661]
advantage of the federal 30% tax credit
[663]
the federal ITC it's called and bundle
[666]
this in so you would actually get 30
[668]
off the cost of your power wall making
[670]
the economics much more palatable much
[674]
better much you know more in your favor
[676]
versus just buying them outright we're
[679]
honestly the economics don't make a lot
[680]
of sense for most people let's look at
[682]
my actual utility bill from last year
[684]
and just kind of see how this would
[686]
shake out without the power walls but
[688]
with solar now most months I actually
[690]
did not produce more than 100% of the
[693]
power that I consume so I was still
[695]
using the grid even though I had a
[696]
relatively large solar system on my
[699]
house but you know due to the power
[701]
company giving me a $500 credit for
[704]
having solar I ended up not knowing
[706]
anything for all of last year
[708]
other than that $10 a month connection
[709]
fee which is kind of a separate thing
[711]
that you just have to pay for and the
[713]
reason this works is because of net
[716]
energy metering now nem is a sort of
[718]
controversial topic there were some some
[720]
recent changes to it but in the end well
[723]
the way it works is you sell back or you
[725]
you know give back energy that is in
[728]
excess of whatever you're consuming at
[730]
that moment so what you do is you kind
[731]
of use the grid as a battery here and
[732]
you give them that excess storage and
[734]
then when the Sun Goes Down in your
[736]
solar panels are no longer working
[737]
you essentially buy back you use those
[739]
credits so if you're generating more
[741]
energy than you're consuming you have a
[743]
negative balance in general this is a
[746]
super common thing that makes the
[748]
economics of the power walls really not
[750]
worth it for most people now you may be
[753]
wondering hey do I have net energy
[754]
metering well I'll put a link to that to
[757]
a website there that'll let you know but
[759]
38 states plus a lot of the territories
[762]
and provinces of the United States offer
[763]
this so chances are you do so in that
[766]
case when you have solar and net energy
[768]
metering it doesn't really make hardly
[771]
any sense to actually put your money
[773]
into this except for one case we'll talk
[775]
about in a second but let's assume you
[777]
don't have solar right now you could
[780]
actually benefit from this and a recent
[782]
Stanford study showed that across the
[785]
the warranty period the 10-year warranty
[787]
that you get on the power walls if your
[789]
average per kilowatt hour price is above
[791]
thirteen point nine cents you would at
[794]
least break even if not come out you
[796]
know well ahead now that comes out to
[798]
about twelve states in the United States
[801]
some of the
[801]
places with the most expensive
[803]
electricity are the ones you can imagine
[805]
Hawaii of course being number one as
[807]
always so in those places if you don't
[811]
have solar this could make a lot of
[812]
sense by doing what you know I like to
[814]
call rate arbitrage another term you may
[816]
see out there is called peak shaving
[818]
where essentially when you have the
[819]
lowest time of use rating the cheapest
[822]
electricity you fill these up and then
[824]
during the highest the peak time you you
[826]
live off of them and that was in the app
[829]
where I showed you that customized where
[830]
it'll actually figure that out for you
[832]
you just kind of go in and tell it when
[833]
is the expensive you know the peak rates
[835]
versus the off-peak rates but that other
[837]
case where it does make sense is if you
[840]
live somewhere that have regular power
[842]
outages so in the United States this is
[845]
kind of the the sub Atlantic area the
[848]
south that is on the coastal side where
[850]
hurricanes regularly come and you know
[853]
knock out power or cause other kind of
[855]
problems like that these things could be
[857]
really beneficial for you you know it
[859]
could literally be the difference
[860]
between life and death in some cases
[861]
there are a lot of cases and a lot of
[863]
people in the world that live in areas
[865]
with kind of insecure or unstable
[869]
electricity grids and so if you live in
[872]
one of those places this could be
[874]
something that whether or not the
[875]
economics make a whole lot of sense
[876]
having energy when the grid is down and
[880]
not being a regular thing is totally
[882]
gonna be worth it for you so it's not
[883]
one of those things where you're just
[884]
looking about looking to save money
[886]
you're looking to just have a better or
[888]
a better quality of life with this and
[889]
this definitely offers you that
[891]
opportunity and lastly I really can't
[894]
stress enough how awesome it feels to
[899]
look and see that I am really not using
[901]
any electricity from the grid at all I
[904]
mean it's just just incredible seeing
[906]
this and knowing that I have control
[908]
over how I'm consuming energy and what's
[911]
happening to it it really is a great
[913]
feeling and so you know we're human and
[916]
you know this is why behavioral
[918]
economics exists because we're not
[920]
machines this isn't just a math equation
[922]
here and so you know that is definitely
[924]
valuable and so if that's something that
[926]
is valuable to you and you can do things
[928]
like pair it with the solar purchase or
[930]
get you know that one of the discounts
[933]
from the SGI program in california or
[935]
similar
[935]
where you live then this can totally
[937]
make sense right if I naturally may not
[940]
be a hundred percent but knowing that
[943]
you have energy independence and
[945]
security could be enough for you
[948]
depending on your financial situation so
[950]
I'm curious what you guys have to say
[951]
about this do you have a power wall or
[953]
are you considering one do you have
[954]
solar let me know if there's anything I
[957]
missed in these calculations because
[958]
that's essentially what we're trying to
[960]
do here is is explore sustainable
[962]
technologies like this and see how
[964]
they're transforming the world around us
[965]
through the lens of data of course so
[968]
thank you for watching don't forget when
[970]
you free the data your mind will follow
[971]
I'll see you guys back in the news hey
[977]
thanks for watching the video I hope you
[979]
got something out of it now if you want
[980]
to dive a little bit deeper become a
[982]
part of the Taz nama community consider
[984]
joining us on patreon so what we have
[987]
set up are different things and ways to
[989]
engage such as a discord group which is
[991]
like this chatroom that is just the
[992]
folks that support the channel through
[994]
patreon I'm on there almost daily
[996]
engaging in conversation about how Tesla
[998]
and others like them are changing the
[1000]
world around us for the better so if
[1001]
you'd like to learn more go ahead and go
[1003]
to patreon.com/scishow so mcc's and i
[1005]
hope to see you there soon
