How to Find Good Suppliers on Alibaba like Expert? 5 Steps & 12 Checkpoints - YouTube

Channel: Jingsourcing

[0]
It takes just 3 seconds,
[1]
Alibaba can help you find thousands of suppliers
[4]
for the same product.
[5]
And then you will face the biggest problem.
[7]
who is the best supplier among these thousands?
[16]
I'm Jing, the founder of Jingsourcing.
[18]
a leading China sourcing company since 2015.
[21]
We helped thousands of people source quality products from China.
[24]
I will share with you all my knowledge about
[26]
sourcing, manufacturing and importing in my videos.
[30]
So subscribe now,
[32]
then you won't miss the next coming video.
[34]
In my last video "How to Buy from Alibaba",
[36]
I have explained there are 2 ways to find suppliers,
[40]
direct search or use Alibaba RFQ.
[42]
If you haven't watch that video,
[44]
then please watch it first.
[45]
Because I have introduced a lot of knowledge
[47]
about Alibaba sourcing and importing.
[49]
For the direct search,
[50]
you just type the keywords of product in the search bar.
[53]
Then Alibaba will give you all related products
[57]
from tens of thousands of suppliers.
[59]
Then you choose suppliers who look might be good
[61]
and send them inquiries.
[62]
So, in this case,
[63]
you need to learn how to identify suppliers
[66]
before sending them inquiries.
[68]
While RFQ is much easier, especially for beginners.
[71]
You just need to fill out the form of
[73]
your purchasing requirement,
[75]
and you will get around 10 suppliers' replies
[77]
with their quotation in less than 30 minutes.
[80]
and then you just need to choose the best one from the ten.
[83]
So in this case,
[84]
what you need to do is just identify suppliers,
[87]
after receiving RFQ quotes.
[89]
No matter you use direct search or RFQ to find the suppliers,
[93]
you always need to evaluate suppliers
[96]
according to my following 5 steps.
[99]
The first step is to check supplier's membership
[102]
and some basic information.
[104]
Let me just show you an example.
[106]
I'm going to search for wine tumbler.
[108]
I really like this example because this product is very popular,
[112]
and has tons of suppliers.
[114]
Most suppliers are trading companies and wholesalers,
[118]
and only a very small number of them are real manufacturers.
[121]
As you can see, there are countless suppliers.
[124]
and now you are going to follow my 4 checkpoints,
[127]
to evaluate them by their supplier's information.
[130]
Don't judge suppliers just by the price,
[133]
because all the price you see, they are fake.
[136]
Everyone tries to mark an incredibly low price
[139]
to attract your attention.
[141]
After getting your inquiry,
[142]
then they will quote you the correct price.
[145]
Checkpoint 1: suppliers' membership
[148]
Alibaba has two kinds of supplier memberships,
[151]
the gold or the verified.
[154]
I have explained how the membership works in my last video,
[157]
In short, the verified membership is
[159]
usually better-organized, is richer,
[162]
and paying a higher membership fee,
[163]
but they are more likely to sell you a higher price.
[166]
so the membership is not so important,
[169]
because the verified supplier is not always better
[172]
than the gold supplier.
[174]
Checkpoint 2
[176]
So the most important data you should check is
[179]
how many years has the supplier been on Alibaba?
[182]
and I suggest you to always choose those over than 3 years.
[185]
Because there are a lot of small companies, small factories,
[188]
they will try selling on Alibaba for 1or 2 years,
[191]
and they realize they didn't make a lot of money
[193]
after paying thousands of US dollars per year.
[196]
So they will decide to close their account.
[199]
They are less likely to run it as a long-term business,
[202]
and you will be also out of Alibaba's protection.
[206]
Checkpoint 3: Respond rate
[209]
Response rate means
[210]
how efficiently does the supplier can reply to your inquiry.
[213]
In order to maintain a high response rate,
[215]
a lot of suppliers use tools or automatic reply
[219]
to maintain the rate higher than 90%.
[222]
The response rate is not so important to evaluate suppliers.
[226]
As long as it's over 70%, it's acceptable.
[229]
Because suppliers will receive tons of junk messages every day,
[233]
especially those promoting, advertising messages from freight forwarders.
[239]
So if these messages haven't been processed in time,
[242]
the response rate will also drop.
[244]
So here is also a tip to identify if the supplier is a real manufacturer.
[249]
You can go to supplier's profile page,
[252]
and if their response rate less then 60%,
[256]
and response time is between 24-72 hours,
[260]
and the company is established at least 10 years ago,
[264]
it's probably is a real manufacturer.
[267]
Because most factories are not good at operating platform
[271]
or serving clients like trading companies.
[274]
And they also don't know how to play tricks
[276]
to maintain a high response rate.
[278]
Checkpoint 4: trade assurance
[282]
If suppliers have this shield icon,
[284]
it means they can accept transactions through trade assurance.
[288]
And you can also go to supplier's page,
[290]
find the icon at their head bar.
[294]
The trade assurance limit doesn't matter,
[296]
as long as it can cover your order's value.
[298]
There will be some tutorials on the internet teaching you that,
[301]
if higher trade assurance limit suppliers have,
[304]
the bigger companies they will be,
[306]
and the more reliable they are.
[308]
It's not correct.
[309]
Because there are a lot of tricks
[312]
to play to increase trade the assurance limit.
[315]
You can see some companies have a very high limit,
[318]
such as half-million or over one million US dollars.
[321]
and those are trading company and wholesaler
[324]
instead of a manufacturer.
[326]
because manufacturers are always very humble,
[329]
don't know how to promote themselves,
[331]
don't know how to rank high,
[333]
and Alibaba is just one of their resources to get customers.
[337]
After you check all this information,
[340]
if you like the supplier,
[341]
you can click the red heart icon to add to your like list.
[346]
Step 2, check supplier's business background.
[349]
In Alibaba, there are 3 types of suppliers,
[352]
manufacturer, trading company and wholesaler.
[354]
Trading company and wholesaler are usually buying the product
[357]
from the manufacturer and resell to you.
[360]
The difference is
[361]
a trading company is usually specialized
[364]
in certain products categories,
[365]
while wholesalers are usually selling whatever is popular.
[370]
Their MOQ is less, but their price will be more expensive.
[374]
I don't recommend everyone buy directly from the manufacturer,
[378]
because everyone has different requirements
[380]
on how to balance the price, service and quality.
[384]
But it will still be very helpful if you can identify
[387]
who is the manufacturer, who is a trading company.
[390]
And learn how to evaluate the supplier's business background.
[394]
It's simple, just follow my 4 checkpoints.
[398]
Checkpoint 1:
[399]
the simplest way to identify the supplier's business type is
[403]
is to check their profile page.
[405]
You will see it's written trading company, manufacturer,
[408]
or both trading company and manufacturer.
[410]
Over 80% possibility this information is correct,
[414]
but there are still a lot of tricks to play
[417]
to let a trading company registered as a manufacturer in Alibaba.
[421]
That's why you need to learn my following checkpoints.
[426]
Checkpoint 2:
[428]
Identifying a supplier's background by their company name is
[432]
the most direct and fastest way
[434]
Firstly you need to know
[436]
the Chinese company name consists of 4 elements.
[439]
Location Name Business scope and company type.
[443]
In short,
[444]
for the business scope element,
[445]
trading company usually use words like
[448]
trading, import, export, commodity.
[451]
While manufacturers will usually use words like
[454]
industry, product, certain product name,
[457]
such as stainless, plastic, bottles.
[460]
For location element,it's always better to
[462]
choose suppliers who are located in the industrial clusters.
[466]
For example, the wine tumbler,
[468]
most manufacturers have located in Yongkang or Wuyi
[472]
these two cities.
[473]
They are next to each other, and also next to our city Yiwu.
[477]
All these 3 cities belong to Zhejiang province,
[480]
so a lot of big scaled companies
[483]
will use our province name for the location element.
[486]
So in this situation,
[488]
you need to ask the suppliers for their real address.
[492]
Then you can identify if they are located in the industrial clusters.
[496]
Once you are familiar with the industrial cluster in China
[499]
for all kinds of products,
[501]
you can identify the supplier's type in just 3 seconds.
[505]
Just by looking at their names.
[507]
I'm planning to make a most comprehensive blog post,
[511]
to collect the industrial cluster locations information
[513]
for all types of products in China.
[516]
Once it's finished,
[517]
I will put the link below in the description area.
[521]
It's a huge work, and take a while to finish.
[525]
So you can follow Jingsourcing's Facebook page
[527]
and I will post it there.
[529]
Or you can also go to jingsourcing.com to subscribe to my blog,
[533]
and you will also get noticed once it's uploaded.
[537]
Checkpoint 3: Year of establishment
[541]
You can go to the supplier's profile to see
[543]
when the company is established.
[545]
For most products,
[547]
factories are usually built like 5-10 years ago or even earlier,
[552]
because the investment for building the factory is huge.
[556]
So they usually can not generate any profit like 2 or 3 years
[561]
after building the manufacturer.
[563]
For recent years in China,
[564]
the numbers of small factories are decreasing,
[568]
And very fewer people will think about
[570]
to invest a manufacturer and get customers from Alibaba.
[575]
They are more prefer to become a trading company,
[578]
because the investment is much less.
[580]
You can also identify suppliers by the numbers of their employees.
[584]
For most manufacturers,
[586]
their employees will over than 50,
[588]
and for trading companies, their employees will over than 50,
[588]
and for trading companies,
[590]
most of them have less than 30 employees.
[594]
Checkpoint 4: product categories.
[597]
A good supplier should be very professional in products,
[601]
and usually, their product categories will not be too wide.
[604]
That's why you need to check supplier's product categories.
[608]
Let me show you a very typical example,
[610]
I found 3 types of supplier for the wine tumbler in Alibaba,
[614]
the manufacturer, trading company, and wholesaler.
[617]
If it's a real manufacturer,
[619]
it's normal that all the product is the same type,
[622]
or they are made of the same type of material.
[624]
For stainless wine tumbler manufacturers,
[627]
it's normal that they also make other kinds of stainless steel made products.
[631]
But if you find they're also selling glass-make tumblers,
[634]
then either they are not the manufacturer,
[637]
or they get products from other glass manufacturers.
[641]
Because for glass or metal-made products,
[643]
the production line, the machine, and equipment are totally different.
[647]
Well for trading companies that selling wine tumblers,
[650]
you can find all his products have relationships with drinking.
[655]
You can sell they are selling all kinds of products like bottles and coffee makers.
[659]
But for wholesalers,
[661]
usually, they have a very wide range of product categories.
[664]
There will be no relationship between these categories.
[668]
Checkpoint 5: Certifications
[671]
There are 2 types of certifications you can check,
[674]
Factory certification and product compliance certifications.
[677]
When you are doing the supplier searching on Alibaba,
[680]
you can easily find these 2 types of certifications,
[684]
and use them as a condition for filtering suppliers.
[687]
Factory certifications refer to certifications like ISO9000,
[691]
factory audit by 3rd party, social liability.
[694]
For most big retailers, like Walmart,
[697]
they only consider working with factories that have this kind of certification.
[702]
And they also have their own standard for factory audits.
[705]
So for small business,
[706]
this kind of certification is not that necessary,
[709]
because usually, this kind of manufacturer has high MOQ and high price.
[713]
While for product certifications,
[715]
It's so important for all importers,
[717]
No matter your business is small or big.
[719]
Because for products like electronics, toys,
[722]
most countries have the requirements for the compliance certifications
[726]
for the import customs clearance.
[728]
So, you have to confirm with suppliers,
[730]
if they have compliance certifications to your country.
[733]
If their products comply with the regulations of your country.
[737]
In step 1, we check the supplier's Alibaba membership and information.
[741]
In step 2, we check the supplier business background.
[744]
And now, you probably have a couple of suppliers look like reliable,
[748]
and now, you need to move to step 3,
[751]
evaluate the sales rep's proficiency and communication.
[755]
I really don't want to reveal Chinese suppliers so many secrets,
[758]
because it would get more people to hate me.
[761]
But I really think this information is very valuable,
[764]
and I want to help you reduce the risks
[766]
when importing products from China.
[768]
You should know that
[769]
the sales rep communication and proficiency is very important,
[773]
because he is the bridge that connects with you and manufacturer,
[777]
or the manufacturer department.
[779]
For Chinese suppliers, especially the manufacturers,
[782]
they usually like to hire the new graduate students,
[785]
who doesn't have any working experiences at all.
[787]
But they're willing to accept the lower salary,
[790]
and willing to work in manufacturers
[792]
that are always far away from cities.
[794]
They don't have much knowledge and expertise in their products
[797]
They can't help you a lot, especially when you want to customize new products.
[801]
The No.1 key point for good communication is that
[804]
the sales rep can understand your requirements.
[806]
Let me show you a case study example.
[808]
This is the inquiry I sent to wine tumbler suppliers,
[811]
and I describe the detail very well for my requirements,
[815]
and also the feedback I want to get.
[817]
I have mentioned the colors I want, my estimated purchasing quantity,
[822]
how I want to customize the packaging.
[824]
And also I need a quote for shipping my products to the United States.
[829]
I need product price,
[831]
condition for customized packaging, and a shipping quote.
[834]
And this sales rep didn't reply any single of my questions,
[838]
and just copy and paste me a bunch of irrelevant words.
[841]
He must send the same content to every customer.
[844]
Let me show you an example of good communication with a sales rep,
[848]
how does he reply to me.
[849]
He does not only quote me the price but also recommends
[852]
how they can help me make the product packaging,
[855]
and also suggest me to get the sample to see the quality.
[858]
Except for understanding your requirements,
[860]
a good sales rep also has very high efficiency in communication.
[865]
They usually reply to you when they are off work,
[868]
or even on holiday, on weekends.
[871]
There are time zone differences between China and most other countries.
[874]
If your suppliers' sales rep can only reply to you during working hours in China,
[880]
the communication will become very slow.
[883]
So I recommend you to download the Wechat app,
[886]
And use it as a fast communication app for talking with your suppliers.
[890]
This is the app we Chinese use mostly,
[894]
Every Chinese will use this app for chatting,
[897]
and we'll use it literally from wake up in the morning till night.
[902]
Step 4 Compare suppliers' lead times,
[905]
and write an on-time delivery contract.
[907]
Lead time means
[909]
after you place an order, how long it will take to get your product made,
[913]
and ready to ship.
[915]
Lead time is also a very important fact to choose the right supplier,
[919]
especially when you have a very tight time schedule for purchasing and selling.
[923]
For example,
[925]
you want to catch the big selling day like
[927]
black Friday, Christmas and New Year.
[929]
For most products,
[930]
it won't take much time for manufacturing,
[934]
and usually, around 20 days will be enough.
[936]
If you don't buy a large quantity like
[938]
hundreds of thousands of USD valued products.
[941]
But manufacturers usually have their production schedule,
[945]
and they will arrange when to start making your products
[948]
according to this schedule.
[950]
That means you need to wait even a longer time,
[953]
Sometimes it will take like 45-60 days to get products made,
[958]
especially in the latter half of the year.
[961]
Because that's the high season for manufacturing.
[963]
So when you're choosing suppliers,
[965]
you need to confirm each supplier's lead time.
[968]
And you can also place orders through the trade assurance.
[971]
Let them guarantee on-time delivery.
[974]
If there's a delay, you can open a dispute to get compensation.
[979]
Step 5 Confirm price, and order sample.
[983]
So the price isn't always the first thing you need to consider
[986]
when you want to find a long term relationship supplier on Alibaba.
[990]
And for the lowest suppliers,
[992]
they will have all kinds of reasons to make their products,
[995]
like 10% or 20%, even more, cheaper than most of the others.
[999]
Maybe the product quality is worse, or have a higher defect rate.
[1003]
Or they don't sell you brand newly made products after you place an order.
[1007]
They probably sell you the overstock products for cleaning their inventory. Or they don't sell you brand newly made products after you place an order.
[1007]
They probably sell you the overstock products for cleaning their inventory.
[1011]
For the brand new made product, they would have a new price.
[1014]
So you have to get the samples from 2-3 suppliers
[1017]
to confirm the quality,
[1019]
even though the sample from each supplier will cost you $30,
[1022]
and it will take 3-4 days to deliver to you by courier service.
[1027]
But it's worthy.
[1029]
After receiving the sample and check the quality,
[1031]
you can remove the bad suppliers from your list.
[1034]
And for the good sample suppliers,
[1037]
if the price is acceptable, then you need to confirm
[1040]
if the quality of the massive production is the same as the sample,
[1044]
And confirm the product size, weight,
[1046]
and material thickness should be the same as the sample.
[1049]
You can write all the details when you place a trade assurance order.
[1054]
Very appreciated for watching!
[1055]
I hope all the strategies can help you a lot
[1058]
to find the best- matched supplier on Alibaba for your business.
[1061]
And remember, reliable and long term relationship suppliers are always
[1065]
the foundational factor for a successful business.
