and today we're gonna be talking about
[1]
pin risk what it is how it could hurt
[7]
you and how understanding it can really
[9]
help your options trading as well let's
[12]
talk about why RCW why RCW you can see
[17]
on the open on the 8 strike the open
[20]
interest is ten thousand now for this
[23]
example I preferred that ten thousand to
[26]
be on the 10 strike because Huayra CW is
[29]
trading at ten sixty so let's use our
[31]
imagination and let's pretend those ten
[34]
thousand open interest contracts are
[36]
actually on the ten strike so I made a
[40]
little Excel spreadsheet YRC W ten
[43]
dollars ten strike open interest one
[46]
thousand nine 1009 in the money of those
[54]
1000 options contracts is a hundred
[57]
thousand shares of stock okay because if
[60]
you're long a thousand calls on the ten
[63]
strike and YRC W expires at eleven
[66]
you're long a hundred thousand shares at
[69]
expiration if you didn't cover those
[72]
options so let's talk about pin risk and
[75]
let me explain why it exists and how it
[78]
works our positions long a thousand of
[81]
the ten strike calls there are 60
[83]
seconds to go before expiration on the
[86]
third Friday in this example the stock
[89]
price is nine dollars and 80 cents so
[92]
right now we're out of the money by
[94]
twenty cents the traders position at
[96]
expiration if we close at nine eighty is
[99]
nothing these are out of the money these
[102]
are going to expire worthless the Delta
[104]
is zero the markets pricing in a zero
[107]
probability of this stock ending up in
[109]
the money next example if we're long one
[113]
thousand of the tenth strike calls and
[115]
there's 45 seconds to go before
[116]
expiration if the stocks price is at ten
[119]
ten at expiration we're along a hundred
[123]
thousand shares of stock the deltas
[125]
probably about one the markets pricing
[128]
in a hundred percent probability with 45
[130]
seconds in this example
[132]
what the trader needs to do is the
[135]
trader needs to sell a hundred thousand
[137]
shares unless they want to be long a
[140]
hundred thousand shares if they sell a
[142]
hundred thousand shares at ten ten and
[145]
their long a thousand from ten they're
[148]
gonna lock in ten cents this example
[151]
long a thousand ten straight calls
[153]
nine seventy traders position that
[156]
expiration is zero but let's say they
[160]
sold the thout a hundred thousand here
[162]
the stock price went from ten ten ten oh
[164]
five ten nine ninety because it knocked
[167]
it down well right here the options are
[171]
now CLIs but if we do a carryover from
[174]
the previous example you're short a
[177]
hundred thousand shares so you have to
[179]
buy a hundred thousand shares what's
[181]
gonna happen when you buy a hundred
[183]
thousand shares of stock nine eighty
[185]
nine ninety ten ten ten
[187]
oh no fifteen seconds to go until
[189]
expiration you're still long the ten
[192]
strike calls you have no stock position
[195]
because you shorted a hundred thousand
[197]
and then you bought a hundred thousand
[198]
back so what do you do at expiration
[201]
you'd be long a hundred thousand you
[203]
need to sell a hundred thousand shares
[205]
ten ten ten
[207]
now we pin when you pin and the options
[212]
expire at your strike price here's
[214]
something people don't know about
[215]
options we can trade these things until
[218]
4:15 Eastern Time on Friday right but
[222]
options actually expire 10:00 a.m.
[225]
Eastern the next morning so if it
[228]
expires at 10:00 and you're along a
[230]
thousand of the ten strike calls you
[233]
don't really know if you're going to get
[236]
the stock or not get the stock because
[238]
it expired directly on the strike if it
[242]
expired at 10:01 you're definitively
[245]
long a hundred thousand chairs because
[247]
the rule is if you expire one cent in
[250]
the money the exchange is going to
[253]
assume that you want to exercise your
[256]
options if it expired at 999 you're not
[259]
going to have any position because the
[261]
exchange it's going to rightfully assume
[263]
that you don't want to be long stock
[265]
from 10:00
[266]
if it's trading at $9.99 that's how pin
[269]
risk works guys how I manage pin risk if
[274]
you're in this kind of situation and of
[276]
course you're probably not going to be
[277]
there with a thousand options but if
[279]
you're there with ten options
[280]
cover your position don't mess around
[283]
with pin risk it's a market makers
[286]
playground they're playing all the games
[288]
don't mess around
[290]
cover your position don't deal with it
[293]
hope that helps
[294]
my new members I'm excited to see you in
[297]
class on Friday we'll continue this
[299]
conversation
