Final Round Interviews with Hiring Manager's VP or Director - YouTube
Channel: Bill Benoist
[0]
Question for you. Do you have a second interview聽
coming up with the hiring manager鈥檚 manager or聽聽
[5]
possibly even higher up than that if a聽
small company? It could be a CEO. If so,聽聽
[10]
definitely stay tuned for this video as this is聽
what I'm going to cover today. So, if you are new聽聽
[15]
here to my channel, my name is Bill Benoist. I'm聽
a certified professional career coach in Silicon聽聽
[21]
Valley, primarily work with individuals in mid聽
to late career professionals. That is, and this聽聽
[26]
is a very common occurrence is interviewing with聽
the next level up. It's a second interview, and聽聽
[36]
there's a couple of ways that I want you to聽
think about preparing for this interview.聽聽
[41]
So, number one, and I've talked聽
about this in previous videos,聽聽
[44]
your resume is what validated your competence,聽
right? They get on the phone with you,聽聽
[50]
they do a phone screen, they're still validating聽
your competence, but when it actually goes for聽聽
[54]
the interview, it's becoming a little bit more聽
about compatibility than it is about competence.
[59]
They're still going to ask you so,me questions聽
regarding the competence of the position,聽聽
[64]
but it really becomes more about compatibility.聽
And that is never more so, true than聽聽
[71]
when you were interviewing at a higher聽
level. I mean, think about this. If you're聽聽
[75]
interviewing as a project manager, as a software聽
engineer, as a financial analyst, whatever it is,聽聽
[84]
and you're interviewing with a CEO, do you聽
think they're going to really understand聽聽
[88]
your job that much? And it's often true, even聽
with just one level up from the hiring manager,聽聽
[96]
because although they may be that overall聽
department manager, they don't really understand聽聽
[101]
the nitty gritty and they kind of understand聽
that you will know more than they do about it.聽聽
[107]
So, there's really not a lot you can prepare for聽
as far as like technical or operational questions,聽聽
[114]
but there are ways that you can prepare for聽
this interview and that is understanding the聽聽
[120]
compatibility and really getting engaged聽
with that person that's interviewing you.
[124]
So, I want you to think about this in two聽
different lights. There are two different kinds of聽聽
[130]
individuals that will be interviewing you at this聽
level. One would be what I would say, somebody聽聽
[135]
who likes to be the center of attention and the聽
other person who doesn't like to be the center of聽聽
[141]
attention. So, what do I mean by this well center聽
of attention? It means that they really enjoy聽聽
[150]
talking not necessarily about themselves, but they聽
enjoy being the conversationalist. And if this is聽聽
[157]
the case, what you want to be doing is never聽
number one, never interrupt them, but listen,聽聽
[164]
and ask questions that they will have an enjoyable聽
time answering for you. So, it could be about聽聽
[170]
the business. It could be about their position,聽
they enjoy talking, but then there's going to be聽聽
[177]
others that really, they want to listen. Okay.聽
They don't want to be the center of attention.
[184]
And this is where you can share with聽
them some really good stories out there聽聽
[189]
of what you've done before. Let's say you聽
were in customer service, maybe some juicy聽聽
[194]
stories about, you know, a difficult聽
customer that you had, or a really聽聽
[199]
in fact, I scratch that. I don't want you to talk聽
about difficult customers. Think about one of the聽聽
[204]
best customers that you ever worked with because聽
they like to hear positive things, not negative聽聽
[208]
things out there. Um, you know, project manager,聽
you know, an example of something that really聽聽
[215]
went well, you know, you don't have to get into聽
the details of such, but they're going to be聽聽
[221]
interested in just hearing the story. If it's an聽
engaging story. So, you can kind of judge right.聽聽
[227]
When you go in there, if this person is going to聽
be one who likes to be the center of attention聽聽
[233]
again, you're going to ask them engaging questions聽
about the business, about the company, which means聽聽
[238]
that you want to study and learn as much as you聽
can, not only about the company, but make sure you聽聽
[244]
take a look at their LinkedIn profile and learn聽
as much as you can about them at LinkedIn as well.
[249]
You know, Hey, I see that you, uh, went聽
to Harvard for an MBA. That that was a聽聽
[254]
fascinating school to go to boy. If this person is聽
someone who likes to be the center of attention,聽聽
[261]
they're really going to enjoy answering that聽
question. It's a process of getting engaged, okay?聽聽
[268]
Member your resume, validated your competence, the聽
phone screen validated your competence. You had聽聽
[274]
the interview with the manager becomes a little聽
bit more about compatibility, but also, they'll聽聽
[279]
ask you a few questions about your competence, but聽
now at this higher level really becomes more about聽聽
[284]
compatibility than anything else. So, either this聽
person is going to be wanting to talk or they're聽聽
[291]
going to want to listen. And if there's somebody聽
that likes to listen and you don't talk a lot,聽聽
[297]
it's probably not going to go your way. So,聽
you want to make sure that you have some聽聽
[302]
good stories prepared, you know, in advance聽
because they may ask you a couple of questions.聽聽
[309]
They're not going to be really deep questions,聽
but they could be behavioral type of questions.聽聽
[313]
And they're going to be really engaged with the聽
answer that you give them. So, I hope this video聽聽
[318]
was informative and useful for you. If you聽
haven't already subscribed to this channel,聽聽
