Best Way to Revise For CFA Level 1 Exam [Optimized Revision] - YouTube

Channel: Brandon Hill - Bizness Professionals

[0]
when you're studying for the cfa level 1
[2]
exam your revision process is probably
[4]
the most important factor in determining
[6]
your success if you revise effectively
[9]
the material will be stored in your
[11]
long-term memory and available to you on
[13]
exam day i believe the common methods of
[16]
revision out there aren't optimal and
[18]
i'm here to share the best way to revise
[20]
for the cfa level 1 exam so let's get
[22]
into it
[27]
[Music]
[28]
what's up everyone this is brandon hill
[30]
and welcome back to my channel where we
[32]
share content to help young
[33]
professionals develop personally
[35]
professionally and financially let's
[37]
break down this video first i'm going to
[40]
talk about the common methods out there
[41]
for level 1 revision and why these
[43]
methods aren't efficient then i'm going
[45]
to share the best method to use for
[47]
level one revision and talk about
[49]
something called the forgetting curve
[51]
finally i'll share a tool that i created
[53]
that i use to implement perfectly
[55]
optimized revision so let's discuss what
[58]
candidates are currently doing out there
[60]
a common method of revision that i see
[62]
recommended out there goes something
[63]
like this you go through all of the
[65]
readings of the cfa material one time
[67]
through
[68]
and then once you've finished learning
[70]
everything for the first time then you
[72]
go back and revise and this revision can
[74]
include rereading the textbooks and
[77]
learning outcome statements working on
[79]
end of chapter questions and other
[81]
practice problems taking mock exams and
[84]
rewriting all of the formulas multiple
[87]
times over before exam day while this
[89]
can work and many people do pass by
[92]
using this type of revision i don't
[94]
think it's the most efficient way to go
[95]
about it the problem is that too much
[97]
forgetting can happen if you started
[100]
with reading number one and you worked
[101]
your way through reading 60 before
[103]
starting your revision process it's
[105]
likely that months have passed since you
[108]
first read reading one and within those
[110]
months it's likely that you've forgotten
[112]
most of what you initially learned so
[114]
once you start your revision process you
[117]
feel like you've forgotten everything
[118]
and you're essentially re-teaching
[120]
yourself all the material candidates
[122]
think that the learning phase and the
[124]
revision phase must be separated and
[127]
must take place
[128]
at different points in time in my
[130]
opinion these two phases should take
[132]
place in parallel with one another the
[134]
best way to revise for level one is to
[137]
revise while you are still learning new
[139]
material instead of doing all of your
[142]
learning at once and then starting your
[143]
revision process
[145]
you should find this balance between
[147]
learning new material and also reviewing
[150]
past material that you've already
[152]
learned i'll break this down with an
[154]
example i took level one in 2021 and
[157]
during that time the material had 57
[160]
readings and i used kaplan as my third
[162]
party test prep provider and kaplan
[165]
breaks down all of these readings into
[168]
sub readings or what i call lessons
[170]
so within the 57 readings there were a
[173]
total of 153 lessons and i'm explaining
[176]
this to you because it'll help you
[177]
understand this example so at the start
[180]
of my studying i had 153 lessons to
[183]
conquer in order to learn everything i
[185]
balanced learning new lessons while also
[188]
reviewing past lessons that i had
[190]
already learned if i was halfway through
[192]
my six months of studying a typical day
[195]
might look something like this
[196]
learn 41.1 for the first time learn 41.2
[201]
for the first time review 8.1 review
[203]
12.2 review 15.1 then the next day might
[207]
look something like learn 41.3 for the
[210]
first time learn 42.1 for the first time
[213]
review 6.3 review 21.2 review 21.3 as
[218]
you can see with these two days
[220]
i'm still learning some lessons for the
[222]
first time while also reviewing past
[225]
lessons i have already covered at least
[227]
once reviewing past lessons is critical
[230]
to flattening what is called the
[232]
forgetting curve the forgetting curve is
[234]
a chart that represents the decline in
[236]
one's retention of learned material over
[238]
time it was discovered in the late 19th
[241]
century by hermann ebbinghaus a german
[244]
psychologist what he found was the
[246]
following as you can see
[248]
here on the y-axis you have percent
[250]
remembered
[251]
here on the x-axis you have time that
[253]
has passed so what he found is that it's
[256]
easy to recall information when you have
[258]
recently studied but as time passes you
[261]
quickly forget a large amount of the
[263]
material that you had initially learned
[265]
as you could see the slope of the curve
[267]
is steepest at the beginning of the time
[269]
and this represents how one forgets a
[271]
majority of the material that they
[273]
learned within the first few days in
[275]
fact we forget about eighty percent of
[277]
what we've learned within a day and
[279]
ninety percent of what we learned within
[281]
a month so imagine that the first time
[284]
that you studied probability concepts
[286]
was a month ago and you haven't reviewed
[288]
it since then well it's likely that
[290]
you've forgotten upwards of 90 of that
[292]
material thankfully it was discovered
[294]
that you could reduce this rate of
[296]
declining memory by reinforcing your
[298]
memory with space repetition and space
[300]
repetition is a studying technique that
[302]
involves repeatedly reviewing
[304]
information that you want to memorize at
[307]
gradually increasing time intervals this
[309]
next graph could help illustrate the
[311]
effects of space repetition on the
[313]
forgetting curve so you can see here we
[315]
have the initial learning review 1 2 3
[317]
and so forth as you repeat the same
[320]
study session your memory crystallizes
[322]
and the forgetting curve flattens out
[324]
you can see how this gets flatter with
[326]
each time that you review when this
[328]
curve flattens out that means that more
[331]
time needs to pass before you start
[334]
forgetting a significant amount of
[335]
material for example if you first study
[337]
something it's likely that you forget 80
[340]
of the material within a day but if you
[342]
studied multiple times through space
[344]
repetition you might only forget 20 of
[347]
the material after a day of your latest
[349]
study session since forgetting starts
[352]
later as your memory becomes stronger
[354]
the intervals that you study and review
[356]
a lesson are spaced farther apart so if
[359]
you're studying probability concepts you
[361]
might study it for the first time here
[363]
on day one then the next time you review
[365]
it might be a day or two later
[367]
then three or four days after that
[369]
then a week after that
[371]
and so forth until you've mastered
[373]
probability concepts and you probably
[375]
only need to review it once a month now
[377]
let's talk about implementing this
[379]
strategy the key to successful revision
[382]
is spaced repetition but the key to
[384]
space repetition is your scheduling the
[387]
spacing between each of your study
[389]
sessions for any given lesson needs to
[391]
be calculated as i stated in my example
[394]
during my year kaplan broke down the 57
[397]
readings into 153 lessons i had to
[400]
optimally schedule the space repetition
[403]
of 153 lessons some lessons were really
[406]
easy to me so i didn't need to study
[408]
them as frequently and other lessons i
[411]
struggled with so i needed to study them
[413]
more frequently you can imagine that
[415]
keeping track of this for 153 lessons
[418]
could be difficult but i created a
[420]
spreadsheet that would do all this for
[421]
me automatically and in an optimal way
[424]
it's called the cfa revision spreadsheet
[426]
this spreadsheet took all of the hassle
[428]
out of scheduling of when i would learn
[430]
new lessons and when i would revise past
[433]
lessons i had all 53 lessons
[436]
within all 57 readings
[438]
within all 10 topic areas after i would
[442]
study a lesson for the first time i
[443]
would give myself a grade from 1 to 10
[446]
on how well i knew that lesson based on
[448]
that 1 to 10 rating the spreadsheet
[450]
would automatically schedule the next
[452]
time i had to review that lesson
[454]
if i rated myself a 2 for example i
[457]
would have to review that lesson 2 days
[459]
after my initial time studying it if i
[461]
rated it an 8 i would have to review
[463]
that lesson 11 days later here's a
[466]
breakdown of the 1 to 10 rating and how
[468]
many days between study sessions the
[470]
spreadsheet would schedule
[473]
this ensured that readings i was
[475]
proficient in were studied less
[476]
frequently and readings i struggled with
[479]
were studied more frequently the cfa
[481]
revision spreadsheet is the backbone of
[483]
this entire revision system
[485]
it keeps everything optimized and on
[487]
track and you'll never waste time
[489]
thinking about what you need to study in
[491]
the top left here you'll enter a few
[493]
inputs
[494]
at the start of your studies you'll
[496]
enter your test date
[497]
then on any given day you'll enter
[499]
today's date
[501]
and this here will tell you how many
[503]
days you have left until your exam also
[506]
entering today's date
[508]
triggers these formulas over here that
[510]
tell you which topic you have to study
[512]
on that day so you can see over here i
[515]
have all the lessons within all the
[517]
readings within all the topics
[520]
in this area right here is where you
[522]
will grade your study sessions from 1
[524]
through 10.
[526]
this column right here is where you'll
[528]
input the first date that you reviewed a
[530]
lesson
[531]
so let's go over to a clean tab and i
[533]
could show you so here we are in a fresh
[535]
tab and imagine the first date they
[536]
review this lesson
[538]
is 11 18
[540]
21
[542]
after you do that you're gonna grade
[543]
yourself from one through ten
[546]
i'll give myself a three
[548]
you can see how
[549]
the formulas in this sheet automatically
[551]
schedule the next time you'll have to
[553]
review this
[554]
and look right here while i change this
[556]
number
[558]
you can see how the date changes
[560]
so you would know that the next time you
[562]
had to review this is uh 11 25 and
[565]
imagine that you continue the days go by
[568]
and you type in 11
[570]
25 21.
[572]
i'll scroll over here and you can see
[573]
when i hit enter
[575]
now the spreadsheet tells you that on 11
[577]
25 21 you have to review this lesson
[580]
again and this is how the spreadsheet
[582]
would work you would continue to learn
[584]
new lessons on 11 19
[587]
you would grade yourself again
[589]
11 20
[591]
grade yourself again
[593]
and eventually your spreadsheet would
[594]
look like this
[596]
so you would be reviewing lessons as you
[599]
are learning new lessons until you
[601]
finish all 153 lessons or whatever it is
[605]
in the year that you're taking it
[607]
as i change the date up here
[610]
you can see
[611]
over here when i hit enter it'll tell
[613]
you what to study and it'll change
[615]
automatically so you never have to worry
[617]
about what you have to study
[619]
based on your one to ten rankings the
[622]
spreadsheet is going to optimally
[623]
schedule the next time that you have to
[625]
revise that individual lesson i truly
[628]
believe in this tool and i really think
[629]
it can solve candidates problems when it
[631]
comes to revising for level one if you
[634]
want to download this spreadsheet look
[635]
in the description and i'll have
[637]
directions and a link to where you could
[639]
access the sheet if you want more
[641]
instructions on how to use the sheet i
[643]
have an affordable course on how to
[645]
study for the cfa level 1 exam and the
[647]
cfa revision spreadsheet is included in
[649]
that course i hope you found this video
