Welcome, Today we'll talk about Manu Manek.
[9]
Who was called Cobra or Black Cobra in the 1980s and 1990s.
[14]
If you've watched the Scam 1992 web series,
[17]
You must have seen that there're 2 types of cartels.
[20]
Bull Cartel & Bear Cartel.
[22]
Let's talk about What is bull and bear cartels?
[25]
People who were in the bull cartel, like Harshad Mehta,
[28]
He earned money by increasing stock prices.
[30]
People in bear cartel used to earn by decreasing stock prices.
[34]
This technique of the bear cartel is also called short selling.
[37]
In those days, whether it was the bear cartel or the bull market,
[40]
Both cartels used the scheme of pump and dump.
[43]
Let's talk about how the bull cartel used pump and dump scheme
[48]
People of the bull cartel like Harshad Mehta,
[50]
First, they used to buy a stock,
[52]
and used to increase stock price by manipulating it.
[55]
When price increased, they made a profit by selling those stocks.
[58]
There're 3 steps in it. 1st is buying shares.
[61]
Then pumping share's price by manipulating it.
[64]
And then selling those shares or dumping them.
[67]
That's why it's called a pump and dump scheme.
[69]
People of both cartels who used to manipulate share's prices,
[73]
They were called operators.
[74]
On the opposite side was the bear cartel.
[76]
Manu Manek was the main player in the bear market.
[78]
There were many people with him in the bear cartel.
[81]
Bear cartel members used to wait for an increase in share price.
[85]
When they thought that the share price is too high,
[87]
Then they used to do short-selling.
[89]
In short selling profit increases as share price decreases.
[92]
Manu Manek and other members of the bear cartel used to think,
[95]
If the share price is too high, they used to short-sell it.
[99]
And sometimes they used to decrease share price by manipulation.
[102]
They used to buy shares when the price went too down.
[106]
And used to make a profit.
[107]
Manu Manek was a very strong bear operator.
[110]
He used to rule over BSE before Harshad Mehta came.
[114]
People of that time who were connected to the stock exchange,
[116]
and KR Choksey says that,
[119]
Companies that were listed on the stock exchange
[121]
had to take approval for Manu Manek for many things.
[125]
If they want to change the director,
[127]
Then also they needed to have the approval of Manu Manek.
[129]
They had to ask Manu Manek for company's dividend and other works
[133]
If a company didn't take approval from Manu Manek,
[136]
Or was at conflict with Manu Manek,
[138]
It made the company suffer a lot.
[140]
Because Manu Manek was a bear operator.
[142]
He could pull down the share price of any company by his choice.
[146]
That's why companies on the stock exchange were afraid of him.
[150]
There were many operators in Manu Manek's bear cartel.
[153]
In all of them, 3 Rs were very powerful.
[155]
One of the 3 Rs was Charter Raju and you must know others.
[160]
Manu Manek was a strong operator because he had too much money.
[164]
He used to give money on interest to stock investors.
[169]
People in the stock market at that time
[172]
used to borrow money from Manu Manek at 20-30% pa.
[175]
Since, most people used to borrow money from Manu Manek,
[178]
He used to know who is taking money and where he is investing.
[184]
As soon as Manu Manek used to know that they had bought shares,
[187]
and the share price has increased too.
[189]
People have no money left who bought those shares.
[192]
Then Manu Market entered the stock market and start short-selling
[196]
And made a profit by dropping the share price.
[199]
Manu Manek's plans and strategies and used to work until
[202]
Harshad Mehta was not in the stock market.
[204]
Harshad Mehta started manipulating stock market on a large scale
[208]
He diverted his client's and bank's money into the stock market.
[213]
The bear cartel had no idea that
[215]
Harshad Mehta can bring so much money.
[218]
After the share prices had increased a lot,
[220]
Bear Cartel to have a short position on it.
[222]
And then Harshad Mehta used to pump it more with his funds.
[226]
Due to which the bear cartel had to face loss continuously.
[228]
They had lost too much in Infrolis shares because
[232]
Share's price was increased by Harshad for many years
[235]
Price never came down and the bear cartel faced losses.
[238]
Because in short-selling you make a profit when price drops,
[241]
And you loose when price increases.
[244]
When Harsad Mehta was arrested, then the bear cartel relaxed,
[248]
Many people of the bear cartel had said that,
[250]
If Harshad had his position for 7 more days,
[253]
Then we would have to come to the streets with a bowl.
[255]
1 more company was performing well on the stock exchange in 1980
[259]
Which was Dhirubhai's Reliance.
[261]
It wasn't easy to get capital at that time for companies.
[263]
The company's promoters had to convince their investors.
[267]
Then people used to invest in IPOs.
[270]
That's why Dhirubhai went to villages and towns,
[273]
to convince investors to investors to invest in Reliance's IPO.
[276]
Investors agreed and the company was performing well.
[280]
In between Manu Manek got his eyes on Reliance.
[282]
He started short-selling Reliance's stocks.
[285]
And started pulling down stock's price.
[287]
Dhirubhai knew, that if investors aren't happy,
[290]
The company will have difficulties in raising capital in future.
[294]
Reliance's business was performing well.
[297]
Financial performance was also good.
[299]
But Manu Manek was shorting its shares,
[301]
and lowering its price by manipulating it.
[303]
That's why Reliance's share price was continously falling.
[306]
But at that time, Manu Manek didn't know about Dhirubhai.
[310]
It's said that he brought Anand Jain to support him.
[313]
Anand Jain started buying Reliance's shares in large quantities.
[317]
Due to which Reliance's share price started increasing.
[320]
Due to which Reliance's share price continuously increased.
[322]
Manu Manek and the bear market were short-selling in Reliance.
[326]
i.e Selling shares and Anand Ji and his associates,
[330]
were buying the shares that the bear cartel was selling.
[333]
Due to which Reliance's share demand was maintained in market.
[336]
And share prices continuously increased.
[337]
The bear cartel was troubled by increasing share prices.
[341]
They started having losses.
[342]
There was no derivates market in India.
[345]
i.e Futures and Options weren't there.
[346]
Today, you can easily short-sell using futures & options.
[350]
Because of no derivative market at that time,
[353]
Method of short-selling was completely different at that time.
[355]
In short-selling you first sell shares.
[357]
i.e You sell those shares which you don't have.
[361]
For this, short-sellers or people from the bear cartel
[364]
They used to borrow shares from stockbrokers,
[366]
and used to sell those stocks.
[368]
And returned them when prices used to fall.
[372]
i.e Borrow shares from a stockbroker and sell them in the market,
[375]
and buy them back at a low price and return them back.
[379]
The Short-Selling process was like this at that time.
[382]
But in this case of Reliance,
[383]
Shares that the bear market was borrowing from the broker,
[386]
and selling in the market.
[387]
Anand Jain and his associates were buying those shares.
[390]
At last, all shares that the bear cartel sold,
[393]
All shares were bought by Anand Jain and his associates.
[396]
After waiting for some time,
[398]
The bear cartel had to return those shares to the broker.
[401]
But Anand Jain and associates weren't selling their shares.
[405]
Due to which the bear cartel faced a lot of troubles.
[408]
They weren't able to buy shares to return them to the broker.
[411]
Due to this problem, BSE was closed for few days.
[416]
Manu Manek and the bear cartel had to lose against Dhirubhai.
[420]
So this was Manu Manek and his story.
[423]
There's an announcement.
