Drilling 101: How a deep water well is drilled - YouTube

Channel: Shell

[3]
shell deep water is fueling the growth
[5]
of upstream americas by safely
[7]
developing new reserves and maximizing
[9]
the potential of its existing producing
[11]
assets in the gulf of mexico brazil and
[14]
venezuela drilling a safe deep water
[18]
well can take years of planning and
[20]
preparation
[22]
after identifying potential oil and
[24]
natural gas reservoirs beneath the sea
[26]
floor using seismic technology a drill
[29]
site is selected
[31]
shell geoscientists choose the drill
[33]
site location on the seafloor based upon
[36]
the safest well path that will encounter
[38]
the targeted oil and natural gas
[40]
for an exploratory well in water depths
[43]
up to 9000 feet deep this seafloor
[46]
location is generally directly above the
[49]
reservoir
[51]
a drilling rig is required to drill a
[54]
well
[55]
in deep water the rig may be on one of
[57]
three vessels
[59]
a drill ship
[60]
a semi-submersible vessel
[63]
or it may be part of a floating
[64]
production platform
[67]
all rigs have a hoisting system to raise
[69]
and lower the drill pipe and tools
[71]
needed to drill the well
[73]
a blowout preventer or bop stack
[76]
and a pumping system to circulate fluids
[79]
in and out of the well while drilling
[82]
it's time to drill the hole or wellbore
[85]
using a drill bit
[86]
this initial step is called sputting in
[89]
the well
[91]
the shallow sediments just below the
[93]
seafloor are often very soft and loose
[96]
to keep the well from caving in and
[98]
carry the weight of the well head a
[100]
large diameter base pipe or casing is
[103]
drilled or jetted into place
[106]
the base pipe is assembled at the rig
[108]
floor and a drill bit connected to a
[110]
drill pipe is run through the inside to
[112]
the bottom of the casing the entire
[114]
assembly is lowered to the sea floor by
[117]
the rig hoist
[119]
at the sea floor the driller spuds the
[121]
assembly into the sea floor sediments
[124]
then turns on the pump
[126]
water or drill fluid is used to jet the
[128]
pipe into place until the well head is
[131]
just above the sea floor
[134]
with the base pipe and wellhead at the
[136]
right depth the driller will release the
[138]
bit and drill string from the jet pipe
[140]
and drill ahead
[142]
while the well bore is being drilled mud
[144]
is pumped from the surface down through
[146]
the inside of the drill pipe the mud
[148]
passes through the jets in the drill bit
[151]
and travels back to the sea floor
[153]
through the space between the drill bit
[155]
and the walls of the hole
[157]
drilling mud is used to one lift rock
[160]
cuttings from the hole
[162]
two keep the drill bit cool and
[164]
lubricated and three fill the well bore
[167]
with fluid to equalize pressure and
[169]
prevent water or other fluids in
[171]
underground formations from flowing into
[173]
the wellbore during drilling
[176]
the mud is an environmentally friendly
[179]
water-based mixture of clay for
[181]
thickness and fine ground rock or bare
[184]
right for weight
[186]
at the planned depth the driller will
[188]
stop drilling and pull the bit out of
[191]
the hole
[192]
a smaller pipe or casing string is then
[195]
screwed together connected to the drill
[197]
pipe and run down to the sea floor and
[199]
into the well
[201]
to permanently secure the casing in
[203]
place cement followed by mud is then
[206]
pumped down the inside of the drill pipe
[208]
to separate the cement from the mud a
[211]
cementing plug is used the plug is
[213]
pushed by the mud to ensure the cement
[216]
is placed outside of the casing filling
[218]
the annular space between the casing and
[220]
the open hole wall
[223]
on some locations a second surface
[225]
casing is needed thus the well is
[228]
drilled even deeper
[229]
in the second surface casing interval
[232]
the well is cemented using a second
[234]
smaller casing string repeating the same
[236]
process used in the last hole section
[240]
at this point in the well the pressure
[242]
in the deeper rock may be too high to
[244]
continue with the simple water-based
[247]
clay mud or there may be the potential
[249]
to encounter oil or gas before drilling
[252]
below this point a blowout preventer
[254]
with a riser will be installed at the
[257]
sea floor
[258]
the bop stack is a massive system of
[261]
valves and rams that protect the rig and
[263]
environment from oil and gas flows
[266]
should the weight of the drilling mud be
[268]
too low
[269]
the bop stack is connected to a pipe
[272]
called a riser
[273]
the riser connects the rig to the well
[275]
and allows us to circulate the drilling
[277]
fluid and rock cuttings all the way back
[280]
to the rig on the surface
[282]
the bop stack is fully tested before we
[285]
drill further
[287]
drilling now resumes with the drill bit
[289]
and drill pipe always operating through
[292]
the bop stack
[294]
just as we did further up the hole
[296]
casing strings are run and cemented in
[298]
place when needed to cover up the open
[301]
hole sections
[302]
when the oil and gas zones targeted by
[305]
the geologists are reached and the
[307]
presence of an oil or gas zone is proven
[309]
a final casing string may be installed
[312]
if the seafloor location is favorable
[314]
for future development
[316]
this final casing string allows for the
[318]
future safe production of the oil and
[321]
natural gas
