00:00:00:04 - 00:00:12:16 JACKSON 聽
[0]
Hey, everybody. Jackson, Galaxy Cat, Daddy,聽 welcome back, my friends to the cat cave.聽聽
[6]
The first thing is, I'm just going to tell you聽 right off the bat, subscribe to this channel.聽聽
[10]
I'm not going to give you reasons to subscribe. 00:00:13:01 - 00:00:27:01 聽
[13]
Just come on. Do it. Also, don't forget to ring聽 the bell, because that way, every time there's聽聽
[18]
a new video like this one, you're going to get聽 notifications along with whenever I go live and we聽聽
[24]
have chats or polls or anything like that. 00:00:27:10 - 00:00:49:10 聽
[27]
You will be the first to聽 know. Now, the second thing聽聽
[30]
I wanted to house keep about is before I start on聽 today's topic, which is some cat ification themed聽聽
[37]
work if you don't know what cat ification is.聽 first of all, the word means sort of esthetically聽聽
[44]
creating a home that both you and your聽 cats love environmental enrichment 聽
[49]
00:00:49:10 - 00:01:09:14 that works for humans like聽聽
[51]
paw in finger like that. Today's cat ification聽 topic is one that we hear constantly when we've聽聽
[59]
solicited questions from the public about聽 it. It almost always hinges on. Well, this is聽聽
[66]
all great, but I rent my place. 00:01:10:00 - 00:01:22:03 聽
[70]
I live in an apartment. I can't do half the things聽 that you're telling me to do. Yet I still want to聽聽
[76]
create a wonderful place for my cats to be. Even聽 though it's not a permanent thing for them. 聽
[82]
00:01:22:03 - 00:01:42:15 So how do I do that? Well, I'm glad聽聽
[85]
you asked, because that's what today's video聽 is about how to codify in a rented space.聽聽
[91]
So I mean, pretty much if you're watching this聽 video, you're already looking at it going,聽聽
[96]
well, I want what's best for my cat and I聽 rent and it's a pain, you know, for my 聽
[102]
00:01:42:15 - 00:01:56:16 cats. So tell me what to do. So聽聽
[105]
you don't need to know that you're dealing with聽 less space, less storage space, probably maybe聽聽
[110]
sharing the space with others and the fact that聽 you can't hang things on the wall, you can't do聽聽
[114]
anything permanent, you know, all that stuff. 00:01:56:22 - 00:02:14:22 聽
[116]
So let's just get right to solutions. So聽 the first thing that we should consider聽聽
[121]
is scratching surfaces and with scratching聽 surfaces. The kind of cool thing is you can聽聽
[127]
be a little stealth about them. You don't聽 necessarily need big, tall scratching posts聽聽
[133]
in order to make things work. 00:02:14:23 - 00:02:31:16 聽
[134]
Now this, of course, depends on the size聽 of your cat, because what you want ideally,聽聽
[139]
is for your cat to be able to reach up the length聽 of their body, pull down and be able to exercise.聽聽
[146]
You know these muscles here and really聽 just dig in to to that surface. 聽
[151]
00:02:32:00 - 00:02:48:12 Also, think about how your cat likes to scratch,聽聽
[155]
and many cats are horizontal scratches and you聽 don't even know it. You're just wondering why they聽聽
[160]
don't use the vertical scratching post you have聽 when really what they want to do is scratch flat,聽聽
[165]
and those types of scratches are聽 easy to populate your house with. 聽
[168]
00:02:48:21 - 00:03:06:17 But also, there's the scratches that are聽聽
[172]
at an angle more sloppy and triangular聽 again. These can go under things. They聽聽
[176]
don't have to be out, but really, scratches can聽 go pretty much anywhere. I mean, my ideal spot聽聽
[184]
is anywhere near where you are. 00:03:06:19 - 00:03:21:01 聽
[187]
So a lot of times we're talking about the couch,聽 we're talking about the bed. Those are great areas聽聽
[191]
to have scratches because your cats are going聽 to want to compliment your scent with theirs.聽聽
[197]
The next topic we'll talk聽 about is creative climbing. 聽
[201]
00:03:21:08 - 00:03:35:17 The first rule of thumb when it聽聽
[203]
comes to apartment cat ification is use what you聽 got. So a prime example of this is if you happen聽聽
[209]
to be lucky enough to have a fireplace in your聽 apartment, that means you've also got a mantle. 聽
[215]
00:03:35:21 - 00:03:54:15 A mantle then becomes that perfect聽聽
[218]
built into the wall hub, where other things can be聽 built onto it in order to create what I call the聽聽
[224]
cat superhighway. If all of this lingo is getting聽 a little bit too much for you, there's a video聽聽
[230]
circulating right over my head here, which聽 which goes through the basics of cat 聽
[234]
00:03:54:15 - 00:04:10:05 ification, so check that one out聽聽
[236]
when you think about that cat superhighway. So the聽 idea is especially in the the the most socially聽聽
[242]
significant part of the house, which is usually聽 the living room. You want to see if you can make聽聽
[246]
something so that your cats can move around聽 the room without ever touching the floor. 聽
[250]
00:04:10:13 - 00:04:26:11 So we're looking at shelves that聽聽
[253]
might have already existed bookcases where your聽 cats can go around up over. Are you going to then聽聽
[260]
attach the couch to then OK from couch will go聽 to scratching posts that might be higher. 聽
[266]
00:04:26:15 - 00:04:47:15 From there, we go on to the bookcase聽聽
[268]
or down onto the TV console. You see what I'm聽 doing here. I'm creating the cat superhighway聽聽
[274]
based on nothing being attached to the wall.聽 Now the other part of this that I think is聽聽
[280]
really important if you if you do have the room,聽 cat trees are just indispensable, so your 聽
[287]
00:04:47:15 - 00:05:05:16 cats go up those cat trees. And now we're聽聽
[290]
looking at where do we go? Those trees act as your聽 onramps to this whole deal here. one more little聽聽
[298]
hint about creative climbing the. That I got to聽 point out, because it has saved me in a couple of聽聽
[304]
different apartments that I've lived in. 00:05:05:21 - 00:05:20:18 聽
[306]
And that is tension mounted cat climbing聽 poles. So they come in either cat tree聽聽
[313]
or just a straight up pole that goes up and聽 down. They tension mount to the ceiling and to聽聽
[319]
the floor. Nothing gets drilled in. 00:05:21:08 - 00:05:39:00 聽
[321]
It's just you. Screw it. Screw it, screw it.聽 Now, tension keeps it mounted, right. So that聽聽
[328]
means that you now have something where again,聽 you can have an on ramp to your superhighway, or聽聽
[334]
it's just something to climb up and down, but it's聽 nothing that you have to drill into the wall. 聽
[339]
00:05:39:00 - 00:05:55:06 So that's just one more little creative hack聽聽
[342]
to get you through your apartment rental with聽 your cats. And one more little creative hack聽聽
[349]
that I've actually used a few times, and you聽 might have actually seen me use it on my show聽聽
[353]
a few different times is ladders. 00:05:55:11 - 00:06:11:14 聽
[355]
There are sort of old or antique聽 looking ladders that you can get,聽聽
[360]
and I've seen them on everything from eBay to,聽 you know, some more of the more ritzy places聽聽
[366]
that are like, oh, repurposed and, you know,聽 antique pine ladder, those kind of things. 聽
[371]
00:06:11:14 - 00:06:22:01 But anyway, so they can be really decorative.聽聽
[373]
But if you line them up against the wall, there's聽 just that way to climb up on something. And again,聽聽
[378]
it's your on ramp to the superhighway.聽 So anything that gets you up. 聽
[382]
00:06:22:06 - 00:06:36:23 These are all just ways to take the聽聽
[385]
things that you wouldn't even think about as being聽 lifesavers when it comes to codification. And聽聽
[391]
that's what they become. So the next thing that聽 we want to talk about is multi functionality. 聽
[397]
00:06:37:02 - 00:06:52:00 So if you've kept up with me talking about聽聽
[399]
codification over the years, then you know, I聽 always talk about blocking off the unders. I don't聽聽
[404]
see any reason why your cat should get under your聽 bed. It is dangerous if there's an emergency and聽聽
[410]
you've got to get your cats out of the house. 00:06:52:06 - 00:07:04:05 聽
[412]
And it's also one of those things where your cat's聽 going to go under there if they're not feeling all聽聽
[416]
that secure and you can't get them out again. So聽 they get to call the shots from an environmental聽聽
[422]
perspective, and we just don't want that. 00:07:04:14 - 00:07:19:05 聽
[424]
If you can block off the unders and you're聽 turning those unders into storage space. So聽聽
[430]
under the beds, sort of, you know, those聽 containers that you can just slide under the bed.聽聽
[434]
Those are great ways of at least partially聽 blocking off the underside of the bed. 聽
[439]
00:07:19:11 - 00:07:36:07 And at the same time, making use of the space.聽聽
[443]
Here's another example. one of the things聽 when you're dealing with with very limited聽聽
[448]
closet space, et cetera, you always want to have聽 obviously your cat carrier around, but I believe聽聽
[454]
you also want to have that out and ready. 00:07:36:07 - 00:07:48:12 聽
[456]
If there's an emergency, you want your cat in聽 the carrier you want out of the house before聽聽
[460]
you can count to ten. Keep your cat carrier out聽 in the open. And even better yet, turn it into聽聽
[466]
a nice, comfy den or a bed. 00:07:48:12 - 00:07:59:16 聽
[468]
You can take the top off it if you need聽 to so that your cat has an extra bed,聽聽
[472]
but it is still their carrier. You can find a聽 way to merge the utilitarian with the esthetic聽聽
[478]
and make sure that everybody wins. 00:07:59:16 - 00:08:13:07 聽
[480]
In this case, your cat has carrier. They see it聽 as their den, their bed, and you have it out and聽聽
[485]
ready to go if you guys got a split. We don't want聽 your cat to go into the carrier only when they're聽聽
[491]
going to the vet or something like that. 00:08:13:07 - 00:08:30:05 聽
[493]
We wanted to be there comfortable spot so they go聽 there and feel safe when they go there as opposed聽聽
[498]
to feel scared because they're going someplace.聽 So it serves a lot of different purposes. Another聽聽
[503]
thing when we're talking about multi functionality聽 is we start thinking about the places that, well,聽聽
[508]
you can't do without and you can't do 00:08:30:05 - 00:08:41:19 聽
[510]
without a bed. And most of us can't do聽 without a couch or at least a comfy chair.聽聽
[515]
We can provide spaces for our cats on those spaces聽 to make them feel safe, to raise their confidence,聽聽
[521]
to raise their mojo. 00:08:41:22 - 00:08:57:23 聽
[522]
We do this with the concept that I call Sense聽 Soakers. Sense soakers are, well, they're聽聽
[527]
just that they're places where your cats can soak聽 scent. So we look at things like cat beds or even聽聽
[534]
a blanket that becomes theirs or my favorite. 00:08:58:04 - 00:09:10:10 聽
[538]
Are these their cat mats? I call them聽 basically cat frisbees because, you know,聽聽
[544]
you can just get like five or six of them.聽 They're cheap as heck, and you just deal them聽聽
[549]
out like a deck of cards, man. 00:09:10:20 - 00:09:26:02 聽
[551]
Now we've we've not only made sense soakers聽 for your cat that can get moved from place聽聽
[557]
to place as you get more furniture聽 or replace furniture, but places that聽聽
[562]
are already important to them couch in bed聽 because they they compliment your scent. 聽
[566]
00:09:26:07 - 00:09:42:11 They have specific places on those聽聽
[569]
surfaces to call their own and to say, Hey, this聽 belongs to cat. Now, speaking of scent soakers,聽聽
[575]
the one place I really don't want you to skimp聽 is what I call the king of all scent soakers,聽聽
[581]
which is the litter boxes. 00:09:42:18 - 00:09:59:03 聽
[583]
I know that there are plenty of you go, listen,聽 I live in, however many square feet where I have聽聽
[589]
this many bedrooms or whatever, and that means聽 that I can only have one litter box. Well, if you聽聽
[594]
have two cats or if you have three cats, you need聽 more than one litter box and when they walk. 聽
[599]
00:09:59:09 - 00:10:11:00 A litter box and they can smell their scent,聽聽
[602]
and this is after you scoop and everything, it聽 could be a clean litter box. Just the same way聽聽
[607]
as if it were one of these cat beds or mats聽 or whatever they walk by and they go. 聽
[611]
00:10:11:01 - 00:10:25:12 That's right. This belongs to me. I feel confident聽聽
[614]
moving on. You know, if you're going to skimp聽 anywhere, please don't let it be the litter boxes.聽聽
[620]
Now let's talk about bringing the outside in. I聽 know if you live in an apartment, it's tough. 聽
[625]
00:10:25:12 - 00:10:44:14 I mean, you could even live in聽聽
[627]
an apartment that has a balcony. But in聽 order to turn that into a proper patio,聽聽
[634]
you've got to put up fencing or something.聽 And oftentimes your landlord might not be聽聽
[639]
all that happy about that, but you can bring聽 the outside in with some very small things. 聽
[644]
00:10:44:14 - 00:10:56:20 The first thing that I can think聽聽
[646]
about is cat grass. Actually chewing on cat grass聽 is healthy for them. That dose of chlorophyl that聽聽
[654]
that comes along with it is actually good聽 for them, and it helps with digestion. 聽
[657]
00:10:57:02 - 00:11:10:12 one solution that I use and one of my聽聽
[660]
last apartments was to buy a flat of wheat grass,聽 you know, in the health food stores where they聽聽
[666]
have the juices and everything that the wheatgrass聽 comes in a flat and it can be just like that. 聽
[670]
00:11:10:12 - 00:11:22:19 Well, that's amazing for your cat,聽聽
[672]
because not only can they can they chew on cat聽 grass, they can also roll around a little bit聽聽
[678]
or sit in it. If you put it near a window,聽 then they're sitting in the sun in grass. 聽
[683]
00:11:23:01 - 00:11:39:18 I see where I'm going with all that,聽聽
[685]
that spring in the outside in. The second thing聽 that you can do is provide a water element聽聽
[690]
of some sort. A cat fountain is fantastic聽 running water. The idea of running water,聽聽
[695]
being able to not just drink from it, but聽 to play a little bit and to watch it and 聽
[700]
00:11:39:18 - 00:12:01:15 to watch the light dancing off of water. These are聽聽
[702]
just ways to bring in a little bit of nature into聽 a natural nature, meaning apartment buildings.聽聽
[713]
Right? So those are just some basic hints on how聽 to codify and live in an apartment at the same聽聽
[720]
time or any kind of a rental space. 00:12:02:03 - 00:12:25:03 聽
[722]
And I mean, the idea is that, you know, necessity聽 is the mother of invention. And as long as you see聽聽
[730]
environmental enrichment as a necessity and not a聽 luxury, then you'll find a way. I can't even count聽聽
[737]
how many people have come to me over the聽 years and said, wow, when I provided a shelf,聽聽
[744]
when I provided 00:12:25:03 - 00:12:45:10 聽
[745]
climbing areas, when I did this or that, my cat聽 just became a greater version of themselves.聽聽
[752]
That's true. And cats see the the environment from聽 floor to ceiling. So the more that we can provide聽聽
[759]
them in the vertical world, the best version聽 of themselves is right there for the taking. 聽
[766]
00:12:45:18 - 00:13:03:05 So go ahead and take it. I am sure that聽聽
[769]
that plenty of you guys who were watching this,聽 who live in apartments have thought of things so聽聽
[774]
shared in the comments. That's what these comments聽 are for. And most importantly, other people who聽聽
[779]
are moving into apartments who have been living聽 in apartments without any idea of how to 聽
[783]
00:13:03:05 - 00:13:16:21 care. If I can see your idea and go, Aha,聽聽
[787]
I can't believe Jackson, miss this,聽 but I'm going to use it nonetheless.聽聽
[792]
Hey, man, I'm fine with that. I do聽 not need to be the sole source of聽聽
[796]
information for all this. 00:13:17:06 - 00:13:36:21
