[2]
Hi.
[3]
I'm Antonio Centeno, the founder of Real Men Real Style.
[4]
Today I'm going to be talking about style for the young man who works with his hands.
[8]
This is in response to a question I received from an Ag student.
[12]
And heís wondering how can he dress with style when heís going into a profession in
[17]
which heís going to be working with his hands getting dirty and really dress shoes, dress
[22]
slacks, suits arenít something that heís going to be wearing very often at all.
[27]
If you havenít already, make sure to subscribe our YouTube channel.
[29]
Itís pretty important.
[30]
Weíre putting a lot of videos and I want to make sure that you get all of them.
[33]
In addition, if you enjoy this video and you like it, this is something you want to hear
[36]
me talk more about, please like it.
[39]
itís really ñ it an easy thing to do and it lets me know that this video is popular.
[45]
And if we get enough likes, weíll make sure we come back and revisit the subject, maybe
[49]
expand on it.
[50]
So, just like right below the button right there.
[53]
This is the question I received.
[55]
ìAntonio, first off, I want to thank you for this website.
[58]
I only discovered it a day ago and Iím already eating it up and trying to discover wearing
[62]
ñ how to wear and dress better.
[65]
Iím in a bit of a dilemma.
[66]
Iím a sophomore at college in Ag school and Iím majoring in landscape contract and management.
[73]
I constantly wear the same basic t-shirt, plain black and white and with a random company
[80]
on it with ñ or a random brand with jeans and Converse shoes.
[86]
I want to develop a style better for my age, but at the same time useful for my environment
[92]
in my area of study.
[93]
I want something that I can wear around campus to class when I hang out with friends.
[98]
However, I do not know where to start.
[101]
A lot of the information you have on this website doesnít really pertain to me in my
[105]
current situation.
[107]
Can you give me some options?î
[109]
This gentleman, heís exactly right.
[110]
Most of what I talk about is going to be stuff with jacket, with dress shirts, dress shoes,
[114]
a little bit more formal.
[116]
But for ñ probably a majority of men out there, especially in the United States, this
[121]
isnít daily wear.
[123]
Itís something maybe they could, you know, I would like to see more men wear.
[127]
But realistically, it was a small percentage of men.
[130]
So let me talk about and let me highlight.
[132]
Below here, thereís going to be a link to an article I did over at the article list
[136]
talking about blue color style.
[138]
Thereís a lot more information in that article and I highly advice you go check it out.
[143]
But I will tell you is to focus on ñ I think the same things you focus on with this type
[149]
of clothing, you should focus on with the type of clothing that even though it would
[153]
be work clothing or clothing that you would expect to get a little bit more dirty, still
[157]
you want to focus on fit, fabric and style and youíre going to hear me if youíve watched
[162]
my vides, I like to talk about these three things.
[165]
And so, the fit.
[166]
Whatever youíre going to wear, make sure it fits you properly.
[169]
Just because itís work clothing, just because itís clothing that youíre going to get,
[173]
you know, dirty and youíre going to ruff up, it should still fit you.
[176]
And thereís a big reason for this because if itís work clothing and if it fits you
[180]
properly, youíre actually going to be able to move this here.
[183]
So, if you look at older pictures ñ and I really look at history, look at our grandfathers,
[188]
our great grandfathers.
[189]
Look at the man that built the skyscrapers.
[191]
I mean, these were men, you know, high above New York City on the sky line, you know, with
[196]
I-beams.
[197]
You know, look at the way they were dressed, overall, they were wearing clothing that looked
[200]
pretty sharp with trim and it fit them closely because when a clothing fit you right, itís
[205]
almost like a jacket.
[206]
And so, the same principles apply that if I make this arm sky too big, it actually is
[211]
going to restrict my arm.
[213]
But because this arm sky is higher up, I can actually move my arm around.
[217]
The same applies to work clothing.
[219]
So youíre going to want to make sure your work clothing fits you properly so you have
[224]
good freedom of movement, and itís just going to look better as well, especially if you
[229]
take care of your body.
[230]
If youíre young man, youíre probably in the best shape youíre ever going to be in
[233]
your entire life, you know.
[235]
You want to look ñ you know, make sure the clothing fits you.
[237]
Itís just going to look better.
[239]
Okay.
[240]
So just like when weíre talking about fit, letís talk about fabric.
[243]
So this really actually ñ instead of fabric, I could switch out and put in quality.
[248]
You want to be looking at pieces of clothing, but youíre going to get a lot of mileage
[252]
at it.
[253]
Oftentimes, when we go and we get work clothing, we think ñ let me get something thatís disposal
[258]
because Iím going to be tearing it up.
[259]
Well, you know, if youíre maybe in welding ñ or actually welding is not a great example
[263]
because you want a clothing that can, you know, resist sparks and extreme heat.
[268]
But if youíre in something, letís say painting.
[271]
You know, you probably ñ I can understand if youíre a painter that you want to wear
[275]
a clothing that after enough wears that youíve got paint on it that you can throw it away.
[281]
Understood.
[282]
But for most of the professions, you could actually go with a piece of ñ you know, go
[286]
with a quality work shirts, something that fits you well and youíre going to get a lot
[290]
of wear out of it and it protects you better.
[292]
Just because youíre going to be working outside doesnít mean you need to be wearing some
[295]
old ruddy t-shirt.
[297]
Thatís probably the biggest mistake I see men who are working outside.
[301]
They wear this older ruddy t-shirts which one doesnít even really protect you.
[304]
You should be looking at a quality work shirt, something that has a color on it.
[309]
But Iíve seen work shirts that actually only button up to the mid-chest area and then they
[313]
donít button up so that the buttons donít get caught.
[316]
But in anywhere, I would go look at western store, thereís a lot of really good looking
[321]
quality western shirt or ñ not western shirt, some of them do look western, theyíve got
[325]
the whole western pockets.
[326]
You donít have to go that route.
[327]
I understand if you, you know, thatís not your style.
[330]
But a lot of this other work shirts, very plain, very simple, but theyíre made from
[334]
rugged materials.
[335]
Theyíre actually breathable.
[337]
And these are going to protect your forearms.
[338]
Theyíre going to protect your neck better.
[342]
And if you get, you know, I donít know if youíre up something sharp on the work area,
[346]
you know, itís going to actually prevent that sharp object from cutting your body.
[350]
Yes, it may tear the shirt, but thatís a lot better than tearing up your skin.
[354]
And a flimsy t-shirt is not going to protect you.
[358]
So I talked about fit.
[359]
Weíve talked about fabric and quality.
[361]
And the last thing would be style.
[362]
So, style is always going to be second when it comes to work clothing, first function
[369]
than style.
[370]
But style can be a close second and where you may want to add a bit of, you know, style
[376]
to your wardrobe is consider a hat.
[379]
Now, you may be saying, you know ñ well, most people just wear baseball caps.
[383]
But does that baseball cap doing actually a good job protecting you from the sun?
[388]
You know, thereís a reason, if you look at older foreman, especially ñ actually this
[393]
kind of hits close to home because my grandfather came over from Mexico and he worked on a ñ
[398]
he picks strawberries, all that stuff, and he worked his way up to foreman.
[402]
And Iíve seen pictures of him wearing a straw hat.
[405]
And he wore the hat not because it was stylish, although I thought it was, but really because
[409]
it was very functional.
[411]
Here was a man out in Southern California, you know, outside for 14, 16 hours a day,
[417]
he had to wear a hat that protected his head because in ensure that, you know, he ñ it
[423]
took care of him.
[424]
And so, look for clothing which is maybe ñ itís going to make me stand out.
[428]
Itís not going to ñ youíre not going to conform it to everyone else.
[431]
Everyone else go with baseball cap because theyíre easy to find, because everyone else
[435]
is wearing them.
[436]
But in my opinion, theyíre not very functional when it comes to a long day of being outside.
[441]
In addition, consider a good bag of chattel, something that you can carry around your equipment
[447]
in.
[448]
You know, so a chattel, you know, think about Indiana Jones, he had that, you know ñ and
[452]
saddleback leather makes some great chattel.
[454]
Iím a big fan of that company.
[456]
And these are, you know, theyíve got 100-year guarantee.
[460]
So, you know, thatís something, yes, youíre going to spend a pretty penny on.
[464]
Maybe you can afford it as a student, but once you, you know, ask for a gift, you know,
[470]
put it in the request to the parents or whatever, or the wife.
[475]
But once you get a bag like this, youíre going to find that itís going to look better
[479]
overtime.
[480]
And just having that accessory with you versus everyone else carrying their stuff around
[484]
in cheap backpacks, youíre going to have a bag which 20 years from now is going to
[489]
look better than when you first got it.
[491]
And so, little things like that are going to add to your style.
[494]
Pay attention to your footwear, last but not the least.
[496]
Go with a quality pair of work boots.
[498]
Red Wings, great boots.
[500]
They will really take care of you.
[502]
And if you take care of those boots, theyíre going to last, you know, ten to twenty years.
[505]
You can get those things already sold.
[507]
So, by quality boots, by quality accessories ñ and youíre going to have to build this
[512]
stuff up.
[513]
Youíre not going to be able to afford to do all of this at once.
[516]
But overtime, youíre going to find that youíre going to have pieces that have history, that
[520]
have character, and thatís how youíre going to build your style.
[523]
So, I hope this was useful.
[524]
If it was, make sure to like it and visit me over at Real Men Real Style.
