How I Passed the CFA Level 1 Exam [+95th Percentile Scorer?] - YouTube
Channel: Brandon Hill - Bizness Professionals
[0]
this right here is the bread and butter
[2]
of the entire system and i guarantee
[4]
that i wouldn't have passed the exam if
[5]
i didn't have this
[7]
[Music]
[11]
what's up everybody this is brandon hill
[13]
and welcome back to my channel where we
[15]
share content to help young
[16]
professionals develop personally
[19]
professionally and financially if you're
[21]
here then i assume that you're curious
[23]
about how you could pass the cfa level 1
[25]
exam well today i'm going to teach you
[27]
how i did it at the time that i'm
[28]
filming this video the past three exams
[31]
have had the lowest pass rates ever
[33]
recorded i'm making this video because i
[35]
believe that my study system and
[37]
philosophy are unique to what's
[39]
currently out there i took level one in
[41]
august of 2021 which had a 26 pass rate
[44]
thankfully i passed and on top of that i
[47]
scored well above the 90th percentile
[50]
possibly even around the 95th percentile
[52]
but i can't say with certainty given how
[54]
this information is presented
[56]
additionally i cleared the 70 mark on
[59]
all 10 of the topics that cfa level 1
[61]
tests you on in this video i'll first
[63]
talk about what makes the cfa test so
[66]
hard then i'm going to tell you exactly
[68]
what i did to pass the exam i'll talk
[70]
about the total number of hours i
[72]
studied how many hours per day i studied
[74]
and finally i'll go over the tools and
[76]
resources that i use during this process
[78]
and i'll give you a walk through on how
[80]
this all ties together and how you can
[82]
implement this yourself links to these
[83]
tools and resources will be down in the
[85]
description so check that out after you
[88]
watch the cfa level 1 exam covers a vast
[91]
amount of material nothing goes too far
[93]
deep into the weeds but the material
[95]
sure stretches wide the volume of the
[98]
material that you have to consume
[100]
combined with the fact that you're
[101]
studying is self-directed is what makes
[104]
the exam difficult so why do candidates
[106]
get knocked off track the first reason
[109]
is that they don't have a schedule or a
[111]
system
[112]
or they might have a schedule or system
[114]
but they don't have an effective one you
[115]
need to be able to take notes and create
[117]
flashcards quickly because there's going
[119]
to be a high volume of them and the
[121]
scheduling of your study time needs to
[123]
be precise you have to pace yourself
[125]
over this four to six month period and
[127]
need to track when you study each lesson
[130]
but more importantly to your scheduling
[132]
you need to know when to review each
[133]
lesson again and again until you've
[136]
mastered it the second thing that knocks
[138]
candidates off track is wasting time
[140]
having to relearn material because
[143]
you're using ineffective study methods
[145]
highlighting your notes and textbooks
[147]
and re-reading over and over are some of
[149]
the more popular methods of study but
[151]
they're actually among the least
[153]
effective they are consuming and they
[156]
aren't conducive to storing the cfa
[158]
material in your long-term memory which
[160]
is what you'll need on the exam now that
[162]
you know about the difficulties of the
[164]
exam let me tell you how i passed i
[166]
started studying leisurely about six
[169]
months out from my exam day the first
[171]
several weeks involved a lot of trial
[173]
and error trying to figure out what was
[174]
the best way to tackle the large amount
[176]
of material that i would have to know
[178]
after about a month i landed on a
[180]
routine that looked promising i created
[182]
an effective and efficient system for
[184]
note-taking flashcard creation and
[187]
optimized scheduling of study sessions i
[190]
call it the lean cfa study system
[192]
because it's based on the idea of lean
[194]
manufacturing or lean production which
[197]
is an approach where you work
[198]
relentlessly to eliminate waste from a
[201]
process the waste in the cfa studying
[203]
process
[204]
is wasted time wasted effort and overall
[208]
wasted resources i created my own
[210]
scheduling spreadsheet so i knew how to
[212]
pace myself with learning each of the
[215]
153 lessons under the 57 readings but
[219]
even more importantly than knowing when
[221]
to study each lesson for the first time
[223]
i created the spreadsheet so it would
[225]
tell me when i had to review the lesson
[228]
for the second time the third time the
[230]
fourth time and so forth until i
[232]
mastered every single lesson the
[234]
backbone of the spreadsheet is spaced
[236]
repetition which has been researched
[238]
validated and mentioned in numerous
[241]
books and articles overall this system
[244]
trimmed the fat off of the cfa level 1
[246]
studying process
[248]
and it freed up a massive amount of time
[249]
for myself that i was able to use to
[252]
work on practice problems quiz myself
[255]
and take practice exams my note-taking
[258]
and flash card creation was extremely
[260]
fast extremely organized and it was
[263]
always accessible using notion for
[265]
note-taking and anki for flashcard
[267]
creation is far superior in terms of
[270]
time than handwriting your notes and
[272]
flashcards i'd estimate that this alone
[274]
saved me 50 hours overall additionally
[277]
once my notes and my flashcards were
[279]
created my cfa revision spreadsheet kept
[282]
me on track and eliminated all worry and
[285]
ambiguity on what i had to study on any
[288]
given day every lesson within every
[291]
reading within every topic was reviewed
[294]
at the optimal time thanks to the
[295]
formulas that are built into the
[297]
spreadsheet and by the way you could
[298]
access the spreadsheet through the
[300]
resource links in the description and
[301]
finally my system saved me time because
[304]
it utilized effective study methods this
[306]
made each of my learning and study
[308]
sessions more efficient and it helped
[310]
prevent the amount of material that i
[312]
forgot thus reducing the amount of time
[315]
that i wasted having to relearn material
[317]
i stuck to my schedule and did what it
[320]
told me to do when i would study a
[321]
lesson i would test myself with flash
[323]
cards and i also practiced the practice
[326]
questions that kaplan offered kaplan's
[329]
qbank has around four thousand practice
[331]
questions i think and i ended up
[333]
completing three thousand of them and if
[335]
there was a practice question that i
[337]
really thought i ought to know i would
[339]
add that to my flash card deck on anki
[341]
in regards to mock exams i ended up
[343]
taking four total before my test i took
[346]
one per week during my last month of
[348]
studying when i showed up on exam day
[350]
though i did feel prepared in terms of
[352]
timing i told you that i started
[354]
studying about six months out from my
[356]
exam day for total hours studied
[359]
everyone's familiar with the recommended
[361]
amount of 300 hours i ended up studying
[363]
about 400 hours and i believe that i was
[366]
able to study that high amount of hours
[369]
because i broke down my study sessions
[371]
into chunks throughout the day for
[372]
example doing three one-hour study
[375]
sessions is a lot easier to complete
[377]
than one three-hour study session your
[380]
willpower won't deplete as fast as well
[382]
as your focus and attention keep in mind
[385]
that these 400 hours were 400 efficient
[388]
hours as well it isn't necessarily about
[390]
the number of hours you put in but it's
[392]
more about the number of productive
[394]
hours you put in let's talk about how
[396]
many hours i studied per day and it
[397]
really changed over the six months for
[400]
the first few months i probably studied
[402]
one to two hours a day pretty
[404]
nonchalantly once i was about three
[406]
months out for my exam day i began my
[408]
deliberate practice and study and i
[411]
would go for probably two to three hours
[413]
a day once i was one month out from the
[415]
exam i tried to study as much as my
[417]
schedule could fit some days that was
[419]
two hours some days that was seven or
[421]
eight hours
[422]
but on average during that last month
[424]
i'd say that i studied four to five
[425]
hours a day now that you have the story
[428]
of how i passed i'll share the tools and
[430]
resources that i used in my system like
[432]
most candidates out there i had the cfa
[435]
institute material and platform that you
[437]
get when you register
[439]
and i also utilize a third-party test
[441]
prep provider i used kaplan's essentials
[444]
package which was the most minimal and
[446]
cheapest package that they offered and i
[448]
really think that this is all that you
[450]
need i use kaplan's online textbooks to
[453]
take my notes and learn the topics and i
[456]
use their platform for practice problems
[458]
and to create quizzes for myself the
[460]
kaplan package offers four mock exams
[462]
and i ended up taking three of them with
[464]
the cfa institute materials and platform
[467]
i hardly used them because kaplan was
[470]
the main thing that i lived in every day
[472]
i never read any of the cfa institute's
[475]
textbook material i didn't really work
[477]
on any of their practice problems except
[480]
for the ethics section i wanted to study
[483]
ethics problems as much as i could so i
[484]
did use the cfa institute's ethics
[487]
practice questions and finally the cfa
[490]
institute offers one mock exam and i did
[492]
take that exam notion is a lifesaver
[495]
when it comes to note-taking
[497]
organization and accessibility wikipedia
[500]
describes notion as an application that
[502]
provides components such as notes
[505]
databases
[506]
kanban boards wikis calendars and
[509]
reminders notion is what i use to take
[511]
notes and organize those notes i didn't
[514]
hand write any of my notes i know there
[516]
are plenty of studies out there that
[518]
show
[519]
that you remember things better when you
[520]
write them out by hand but there's this
[522]
trade-off between writing things down
[524]
and being able to quickly take notes on
[526]
the vast amount of material the time you
[529]
save by not handwriting your notes can
[531]
be used later for effective study and
[534]
memorization methods the feature on
[536]
notion that i used for all of my
[538]
note-taking was the toggle feature with
[540]
the toggle feature i took notes using
[542]
active recall which is an effective
[544]
studying method where you quiz yourself
[546]
and you have to generate an answer while
[548]
reading i'd basically think of a
[550]
question that i could ask myself then
[553]
i'd create a toggle and supply the
[554]
answer underneath the answer would be a
[556]
copy and paste from the online kaplan
[558]
textbook or i would type the answer in
[561]
my own words and i frequently use the
[563]
snipping tool on my computer for
[566]
screenshots of graphics and formulas
[568]
this note-taking structure of toggle
[571]
questions and answers sets you up nicely
[573]
for when you have to create your
[575]
flashcards on anki all the toggles will
[577]
be copy and pasted into anki and become
[580]
your flashcards that you study so let's
[582]
talk about anki now anki is a program
[585]
online or on your desktop that allows
[587]
you to create flashcards you aren't just
[589]
limited to creating basic flashcards
[592]
with words on the front and words on the
[594]
back anki has a lot of options where you
[596]
could customize your flashcards you
[598]
could add text you could add fill in the
[600]
blanks you could format the text you
[602]
could add photos and you could do a
[604]
whole lot just to create comprehensive
[607]
helpful flashcards anki's features are
[609]
great but its capability to organize
[611]
your flashcards is just as amazing i had
[614]
parent decks for each of the 10 topics
[617]
within each topic i had decks for all 57
[621]
readings and within all 57 readings i
[624]
had 153 decks for each lesson the
[627]
separation and organization
[629]
is essential for the system you could
[631]
study things at a high level such as one
[633]
of the 10 topics or you could just study
[635]
one single lesson and really focus on
[638]
that and master it the next tool i used
[640]
was my favorite this right here is the
[642]
bread and butter of the entire system
[644]
and i guarantee that i wouldn't have
[646]
passed the exam if i didn't have this
[648]
the biggest contributor to my success
[650]
and my sanity was my cfa revision
[653]
spreadsheet that i created the
[655]
spreadsheet would track which lessons i
[657]
studied
[658]
then i would give myself a grade from 1
[660]
to 10 on how well i knew everything in
[663]
that lesson based on that 1 to 10 rating
[665]
the spreadsheet would automatically
[667]
schedule the next time i had to review
[668]
that lesson if i rated myself a 2 for
[671]
example the next time i would study that
[673]
lesson would be two days later if i
[675]
rated it an eight i would have to review
[678]
that lesson 11 days after my initial
[680]
time studying it and this is spaced
[682]
repetition the topics that i was pretty
[684]
proficient in were studied less
[686]
frequently and other topics that i
[689]
struggled with were studied more
[690]
frequently this sheet is the backbone of
[693]
the entire study system it keeps
[695]
everything optimized and on track you'll
[697]
never find yourself wasting time
[700]
thinking about what you have to study in
[702]
the top left here you enter a few inputs
[705]
at the start of your studies you enter
[707]
your test date then on any given day you
[710]
enter the current date this here will
[712]
tell you how many days you have left
[714]
until your exam also
[716]
entering today's date triggers these
[718]
formulas over here to tell you which
[720]
topics you have to study on that day
[723]
over here
[724]
for your first initial learning of each
[726]
of the 153 lessons
[728]
you could enter here how many you want
[730]
to learn each day and i'd recommend
[733]
learning one to two lessons each day if
[735]
you enter a one or two the sheet will
[738]
tell you the date that you will finish
[740]
learning each lesson for the first time
[742]
and you want to complete learning all of
[744]
them for the first time probably one
[746]
month before your exam because at that
[747]
point you'll have seen every lesson once
[750]
you'll have time to review those lessons
[752]
and you'll have time to take practice
[754]
exams if you want this spreadsheet you
[756]
can download it i know this video is
[758]
just an overview of what i did so i
[760]
created a skillshare course that goes
[762]
more in depth for every single component
[764]
of this system it'll go deeper into how
[767]
to use the cfa revision spreadsheet
[769]
notion for note-taking and anki for
[771]
flashcards i'll go over the background
[774]
of the effective study methods that are
[776]
used and what makes them so great and
[778]
finally i'll share how you can increase
[780]
your chances of success by utilizing
[783]
certain productivity techniques and ways
[785]
to keep your mind and body primed for
[788]
cognitive performance and there it is
[790]
everybody that's how i passed the cfa
[792]
level 1 exam i'm excited to see
[795]
what the reaction is to the system i'm
[796]
hoping that candidates could use this to
[798]
their benefit until then i'll get
[800]
working on the next video for you
[802]
see you then
