Oil and Gas Industry Overview: Upstream, Midstream and Downstream - YouTube

Channel: Oil and Gas Overview

[5]
Hello guys! Today we're going to take a look聽 at three main sectors of oil and gas industry.聽聽
[10]
Hydrocarbons are extremely important in today's聽 world and are used not only as fuels but to create a聽聽
[17]
large number of different petrochemicals聽 that we use on a daily basis such as聽聽
[23]
plastics, polymers, fabrics,聽 cosmetics and even medicine.聽聽
[28]
The oil gas industry is divided into three聽 main sectors: upstream, downstream, and midstream.聽聽
[36]
Let's first start with upstream oil and聽 gas. Upstream on gas deals with the exploration聽聽
[41]
and production of hydrocarbons. The exploration聽 stage often involves studying the geology of the聽聽
[50]
formation and performing seismic surveys to聽 determine the best location to drill the well.聽聽
[56]
Based on the survey data geoscientists determine聽 the potential of hydrocarbon reservoir underground.聽聽
[64]
The wells can be drilled both onshore and offshore.聽 Usually, the offshore wells are more expensive聽聽
[70]
and complicated. Before the well can be drilled聽 in addition to clearing the land for the lease聽聽
[77]
some infrastructure needs to be built as well聽 like for example roads. On the new fields usually聽聽
[84]
a couple of exploration wells are drilled first聽 to find out if there are actually hydrocarbons聽聽
[92]
underground and it will find out the properties聽 of formation and how much hydrocarbons can be聽聽
[96]
extracted. After the location for the producing聽 wells are determined the wells are drilled and聽聽
[106]
casing is installed. Next casing is perforated and聽 usually hydraulic fracturing is performed to聽聽
[113]
increase the production from the wells. After聽 fracturing the well often coiled tubing is used to聽聽
[120]
clean up the wellbore and remove any obstructions聽 like for example bridge plugs that can restrict聽聽
[125]
the flow of hydrocarbons in the well. The next step聽 is putting production surface equipment聽聽
[132]
and facilities. Often there is a three-phase聽 separator as well to separate the well fluids into聽聽
[140]
gas, oil, and water before the hydrocarbons are聽 transported to the refinery. During the life of聽聽
[146]
the well various enhanced recovery methods are聽 used to increase the production from the wells.聽聽
[153]
Some of those methods are water flooding,聽 chemical flooding and gas flooding as well聽聽
[161]
and this is done to increase reservoir pressure聽 and increase the mobility of hydrocarbons
[169]
in the reservoir so that more oil can be pushed聽 into the well and then brought to surface.聽聽
[176]
Oil and gas wells usually stay productive for many聽 years and then at the end of their lives those聽聽
[182]
wells abandoned by placing a cement plug in the wellbore so that聽聽
[188]
well fluid cannot flow to surface anymore.聽 The site where the wall was drilled is reclaimed聽聽
[194]
by removing all the surface equipment. The聽 goal of the reclamation process is to bring the聽聽
[200]
land where the well was drilled to the same聽 condition as it was before the well was drilled.聽聽
[205]
This might involve planting new vegetation to聽 make the land look like there was nothing there.聽
[212]
Examples of upstream oil and gas companies聽 are BP, Chevron, and Conoco Phillips. Now let's聽聽
[221]
take a look at the midstream oil gas. Midstream聽 oil and gas deals with transportation and storage of聽聽
[226]
hydrocarbons. After hydrocarbons are extracted from聽 the ground, they need to be transported to refining聽聽
[233]
facility where they can be transformed into more聽 useful products. There are many ways to transport聽聽
[240]
hydrocarbons to the refinery and some examples are聽 rail, pipelines, trucks, and tankers. Using pipelines聽聽
[252]
is the most efficient way of transporting聽 hydrocarbons to the market because there is聽聽
[256]
low risk of spill and the costs are usually聽 lower than transporting the hydrocarbons by聽聽
[262]
rail or trucks. Initial investment requirements聽 to build the pipeline are usually pretty high聽聽
[268]
and there are also a lot of regulations that make聽 the pipeline building process very slow. If oil聽
[274]
needs to be transported over the ocean, usually聽 oil tankers are used. Tankers can also be used to聽聽
[281]
transport liquefied natural gas or LNG but this聽 also requires compression-decompression terminals.聽聽
[289]
Right now there is a trend towards聽 using natural gas instead of coal for producing聽聽
[296]
electricity and this will likely drive the demand聽 for LNG. Examples of midstream companies are Trans聽聽
[304]
Canada, Enbridge, and Kinder Morgan. Now let's take聽 a look at downstream oil and gas. Downstream oil聽聽
[311]
gas deals with the refining of hydrocarbons usually聽 refining is performed by heating the crude oil聽聽
[317]
to separate it into different hydrocarbons this聽 is possible because different hydrocarbons have聽聽
[321]
different boiling temperatures. Another method聽 is called cracking and it's used to break down聽聽
[326]
larger hydrocarbon molecules into smaller ones聽 more useful ones like for example gasoline.聽聽
[332]
Common petroleum products are gasoline, solvents,聽 kerosene and various other petrochemicals that 聽聽
[341]
used by industry on daily basis. Large integrated聽 companies usually operate both in upstream聽聽
[348]
and downstream sectors and some examples of聽 those companies are Husky, Chevron and Shell.聽聽
[356]
So guys this is just a quick overview of聽 three main sectors of oil and gas industry聽聽
[362]
and hopefully, this will give you some idea of how the oil聽 gas industry operates. If you guys found this video聽聽
