The moment that really sticks out to me is when I was staring up at the sun, not
[14]
able to move, not able to reach out for help or let anybody know that I was down
[18]
there. I accepted the fact that I was going to die. I was going to drown. I just
[26]
kind of surrendered.
[56]
My father actually was the first union business manager in Syracuse to sign
[62]
with National Income Life. When I told him about the interview, he said,
[68]
"Absolutely you should go for it, it's a great company." I figured why not.
[72]
I had just ... after my two year mark I had bought a two-family home and then two
[80]
short months later is when my life completely changed forever. July 30th of
[87]
2011, started out like a lot of my Saturdays back then. Running in the field,
[93]
helping families and then I decided to go out to my friend's camp on Onota
[97]
Lake. Went out on the boat and when it came time to leave, my friend's father
[104]
who owns the boat said, "Hey Matt, we're about to leave if you want to take one
[107]
last jump, now's the time." Went to jump off the boat, slipped,
[114]
hit my head on the bottom of the lake. Immediately, as soon as my head hit the
[119]
ground, I knew that something bad had happened. I was 100 percent
[122]
conscious, unable to move and trapped underwater. When I got down to my last
[131]
ounce of breath, I got very, very calm, accepted it and basically said, "God, take
[139]
me." And that's when somebody dove in, scooped me up and saved my life. I
[148]
remember that I was in a lot of pain at that time and people just kept telling
[154]
me, "Don't move your neck, don't move your head."
[156]
Then I did and the pain immediately went away. That's the point
[164]
where I became paralyzed.
[169]
The first thing that the doctor told me was, "I'm sorry, Matt, you'll never walk
[174]
again, you won't live independently." People talk
[178]
about being rock bottom in different parts of their life and this
[184]
injury, being paralyzed, took me to rock bottom, and I just knew that I had to
[189]
come up with some sort of a plan to overcome this and figure out what I can
[193]
do. I had to fight to be able to lift my arm, to be able to pick up a
[205]
spoon, a toothbrush, to do the simple things in life that we all take for
[209]
granted.
[217]
I had been so successful and on such a track for success
[222]
American National Income Life that as soon as this happened I
[227]
wanted to get back to work the next day. I wanted to get back to the track that I
[231]
was on. When I was healthy enough to actually start driving, I went back into
[239]
the agency. I transitioned into a recruiting position where I was
[243]
the director of recruiting for New York State. That allowed me time to do
[247]
physical therapy, work from home sometimes, just kind of focus on
[252]
my health and kind of ease my way back into the career. The accident policy
[259]
that ended up paying me over $50,000.00. Not only did I not lose what I had, I
[265]
also was afforded to the opportunity to get back to driving and get back to working
[270]
within the first 10 months of my accident.
[274]
Sometimes in life there's a curve ball thrown and you got to still swing at it
[279]
and hit it. I just did what I had to do. American Income Life is my
[284]
life and has been in my life for the past 10 years.
[290]
Without it I don't know where I would be today.
