Are NBA Players Overpaid? - YouTube

Channel: Sport&Science Breakdown

[0]
Twenty years ago the average NBA player brought聽 home two to three million dollars a year聽聽
[5]
now as of 2021 the average NBA salary amounts聽 to an absurd 7.7 million dollars a year聽聽
[13]
however the league wasn't always like this
[22]
Michael Jordan arguably the most influential聽 player in sports history was making 3.5 million聽聽
[29]
dollars a year during the 1994 and 1995 NB seasons聽 if we adjust this number to account for inflation聽聽
[36]
Jordan would be making exactly six million eighty聽 three thousand one hundred thirty three dollars聽聽
[41]
and twenty cents in nineteen ninety five notice聽 that this was during Jordan's prime in which he聽聽
[47]
averaged an absurd 30.1 points a game and led his聽 team to the second best record in NBA history 72聽聽
[55]
wins and 10 losses the only obvious disparity here聽 is the league's increased revenue year by year聽聽
[62]
so here's a chart comparing the聽 salary cap in 1995 compared to 2021聽聽
[68]
just as clarification the salary cap is a ceiling聽 that limits the total salaries a team can pay its聽聽
[73]
players and is calculated as a percentage of聽 the league's revenue from the previous season聽聽
[78]
so it's a direct link between the league revenue聽 and a player's salary the salary cap in 2021聽聽
[84]
is roughly 4.7 times what it was in 1995. if we聽 multiply Jordan's salary by 4.75 then we should聽聽
[92]
get a salary adjusted to the current NBA revenue聽 3 million 500 000 times 4.75 sixteen million six聽聽
[101]
hundred twenty-five thousand and when we take into聽 account inflation that number becomes twenty eight聽聽
[106]
million eight hundred ninety four thousand eight聽 hundred eighty two dollars and seventy one cents聽聽
[112]
which is a very reasonable amount in hindsight聽 but when compared to other NBA players聽聽
[117]
we begin to see the disparity there would聽 be exactly 30 players or 18 of the league聽聽
[122]
making more money than MJ this NBA season with the聽 closest salary being 28 million 489 thousand 237聽聽
[132]
and belonging to drumroll please Otto聽 Porter Jr wait that can't be right
[147]
apparently it's true Otto Porter Jr does make 20聽 million anyway my point is that NBA players today聽聽
[157]
are making much more money from their NBA salaries聽 than the superstars of this league would have made聽聽
[162]
25 years ago even when you account for the NBA's聽 tremendous increase in revenue this is because聽聽
[168]
larger percentages of the league's revenue now聽 go into increased players salaries rather than to聽聽
[174]
management team owners or development how about聽 the NBA compared to other professional leagues聽聽
[181]
although the NBA is third in viewership worldwide聽 NBA players on average are the highest paid聽聽
[187]
professional athletes in the world you hear it all聽 the time people will tell you that NBA players are聽聽
[194]
overpaid compared to other professional athletes聽 often ignoring the number of games played聽聽
[199]
size of the team career longevity as well as the聽 percentage of revenue that goes to the management聽聽
[205]
and owners of the team so are NBA players聽 really overpaid or is it just a misconception聽聽
[213]
before I answer the question i want to clarify聽 a few things firstly in this video I compare NBA聽聽
[219]
players salaries to other professional athletes聽 not to other occupations like doctors firefighters聽聽
[226]
or dentists because in that respect聽 NBA players are tremendously overpaid聽聽
[233]
the only comparison i draw is across professional聽 sporting leagues like the MLB NFL or NHL聽聽
[240]
secondly i only take into account players聽 salaries from their professional sporting聽聽
[245]
leagues this excludes partnerships sponsors brand聽 deals or any other external source of profit聽聽
[253]
with that out of the way here's a list of the聽 most profitable professional sports leagues聽聽
[257]
in the world if you base聽 the list solely on revenue聽聽
[261]
then the NBA would come in third and it's not聽 even close however we are forgetting a few things
[271]
keep in mind these leagues don't release聽 specific financial records these totals are only聽聽
[276]
approximations of what professional sports leagues聽 disclose through posts articles and statements
[286]
the average nba team consists of 14 or聽 15 players the average nfl roster on the聽聽
[292]
other hand consists of up to 53 players聽 the nfl has a maximum of 1 696 players聽聽
[300]
or nearly four times as many as the nba which聽 is capped at an astonishingly low 450 players聽聽
[308]
during the regular season in regards to the mlb聽 there's about 1 000 players with active contracts聽聽
[315]
this also accounts for players on the injury聽 reserve list if you consider the revenue聽聽
[321]
compared to the size of the team we begin to see聽 why nba players make significantly more on average
[331]
the second critical point that often goes聽 unnoticed is the longevity of a player's career聽聽
[337]
some sports are more physically demanding than聽 others the average NFL player's career amounts聽聽
[342]
to an underwhelming 2.5 years NBA careers聽 on average last 4.5 years and MLB players聽聽
[350]
have the longest career average of 5.6 years keep聽 in mind the salaries that these players receive聽聽
[357]
are likely their primary source of lifetime income聽 in an ideal system players would be paid relative聽聽
[364]
to the physical demands of their sport NBA player聽 careers are close to double NFL players careers on聽聽
[371]
average here's a chart comparing average salaries聽 per year and average career length in the NBA MLB聽聽
[378]
and NFL interestingly the average NBA player is聽 paid close to 10 times the average NFL player聽聽
[386]
although NBA players on average play聽 two more seasons the last and final聽聽
[395]
piece to this puzzle is the percentage of聽 the league's money that's paid to players聽聽
[401]
an organization could be making a hundred聽 million dollars but if management decides聽聽
[405]
that player salaries are limited to only one聽 percent of total earnings it would not mean that聽聽
[410]
another professional league making a similar聽 sum of money is overpaying their players by聽聽
[415]
divvying the league revenue 50 50. revenue聽 is not always a direct indicator of salary聽聽
[421]
because as mentioned before it depends on how聽 much the league decides to reinvest into players
[428]
the five main revenue generators are tv contracts聽 ticket sales merchandising brand sponsorships and聽聽
[435]
team values or investments to understand the聽 dynamic between management and player salaries聽聽
[441]
we need to take a look at the collective聽 bargaining agreement the CBA is a contract between聽聽
[446]
the commissioner of the league and the NBPA聽 or the national basketball players association聽聽
[452]
under the current CBA agreement which is set聽 to expire in 2023 50 percent of NBA revenue聽聽
[458]
is reinvested into player salaries the other聽 half of revenue goes to owners the cost of many聽聽
[465]
team-related expenses like hotels as well as other聽 expenses the NBA doesn't disclose to the public
[473]
this revenue-based salary system works聽 because revenue dictates salary cap聽聽
[477]
and salary cap dictates the minimum聽 and maximum salaries establishing a聽聽
[482]
direct link between revenue and how much聽 a team will spend on its players salaries
[491]
under the NFL CBA players receive 48 of聽 league revenue slightly lower than the NBA聽聽
[498]
the NFL CBA also outlines an increased聽 revenue percentage of 0.5 to players聽聽
[504]
if the league's tv revenue increases by 60 percent
[509]
according to espn lower earning players聽 which are roughly 60 percent of nfl players聽聽
[515]
operate on minimum salary deals these players will聽 likely get the most significant bump and pay at聽聽
[521]
least right in the beginning minimum salaries聽 are increasing by around 20 immediately the聽聽
[527]
percentage of revenue nfl players will receive as聽 of 2021 sits at 48 or 2 percent lower than the nba
[539]
nothing much right well actually 2 percent of聽 the NFL's revenue accounts to an unbelievable聽聽
[546]
305 million two hundred thousand dollars i've聽 supposedly lost revenue when compared to the NBA聽聽
[554]
after hours of research and i'm not joking when聽 I say hours the MLB CBA is insanely confusing聽聽
[560]
I came to the conclusion that the MLB pays聽 its players around 43 percent of revenue
[569]
when we take into account career longevity聽 revenue ratio which is the amount of money聽聽
[574]
that goes to players and the number of players聽 in a given league the complexity of this聽聽
[578]
comparison is put on full display here's a chart聽 recapping the information found in this video
[588]
the first chart compares the revenue ratio of the聽 three professional leagues discussed in this video聽聽
[593]
the bottom line of the chart is adjusted earnings聽 which account for how much revenue players聽聽
[598]
actually receive 43 percent of the MLB's聽 revenue is 4 billion 601 million dollars聽聽
[607]
ranking the MLB second behind the NFL聽 in terms of how much money players earn
[614]
although the NBA makes close聽 to 2 billion less than the MLB聽聽
[618]
the amount of money players receive in聽 both leagues is actually very similar
[626]
in the second chart I factor in聽 the amount of players in the league聽聽
[630]
because obviously the more players the less each聽 individual player will receive the first row of聽聽
[636]
the chart is the adjusted player revenue and the聽 last row is the adjusted player revenue when you聽聽
[642]
account for the number of players the last row was聽 calculated by dividing the adjusted revenue by the聽聽
[648]
number of players in a given league producing聽 a final total that gives us an idea of how much聽聽
[653]
each athlete would receive from their league if聽 revenue was perfectly divided amongst players
[661]
as seen by this chart when you account for聽 the percentage of revenue given to players聽聽
[666]
as well as the number of players in a given league聽 the NBA takes a convincing first place over the聽聽
[671]
NFL and MLB in terms of projected player salaries聽 this is because the NBA has a significantly lower聽聽
[678]
number of players. I decided not to include聽 career longevity into the final calculation聽聽
[685]
because it's hard to quantify injuries聽 and average career length however it is聽聽
[690]
important to keep career length in mind when聽 discussing how much players should be paid.聽聽
[696]
Now to address the driving question of聽 this video drawing from the evidence聽聽
[701]
you've seen especially the last chart聽 comparing league size and player earnings聽聽
[706]
I can confidently say that NBA players are not聽 overpaid compared to other professional athletes聽聽
[713]
