Great Ways to Give Back: AARP - YouTube

Channel: WHAS11

[0]
talking about giving back and caregiving
[2]
this morning and scott we can ask of
[4]
aarp kentucky
[5]
certainly knows about both but scott
[7]
before we talk about that and the
[9]
mission
[9]
and how caregiving is integrated into
[12]
that with aarp kentucky
[14]
what is aarp and who is it for
[18]
good morning everybody it's good to be
[20]
with you angie aarp was founded in 1958
[24]
and it was started to make sure that
[27]
as we age everyone has the resources
[31]
that they need to age well and that is
[33]
why dr ethel percy andrus the founder
[36]
began
[36]
aarp and his social mission has
[39]
continued today and that is to make sure
[42]
that as we all age um we have
[45]
dignity and purpose in that process and
[48]
arp kentucky is one of the 50 state
[51]
offices
[51]
across the country so we have a
[53]
nationwide presence and we deliver
[56]
information and resources with our
[58]
volunteers
[60]
to members and non-members alike across
[62]
the state and in kentucky we have about
[64]
445
[65]
000 aarp members
[69]
we publish the arp magazine every month
[72]
in the aarp bulletin which is really my
[74]
favorite um it's a great resource
[77]
it's just one of the many things that
[78]
arp membership delivers
[81]
so arp is diverse just like our
[84]
membership
[86]
and we are working routinely
[89]
um in the capitol in washington d.c
[92]
we fight for advocacy and and
[95]
definitely um all the things that
[98]
everyone needs
[99]
at age 50 plus absolutely
[102]
and do you know what's the average age i
[105]
mean like you said from age 50 plus by
[107]
the way
[108]
i'm almost there i will certainly be
[110]
joining as a member
[111]
that's for sure well what's your average
[113]
age
[115]
i'm not certain what the average age is
[117]
but what we find is that our members
[120]
want these resources um and it's
[123]
it's based on the life cycle if you will
[126]
where you're at with your family where
[128]
you're at
[128]
in your life and what do you need at
[130]
that point where you have adult children
[132]
whether you're a caregiver you're in the
[133]
sandwich generator generation
[135]
where you're caring for your your adult
[137]
children and your gran
[139]
and your parents so there's a very
[141]
diverse range of
[142]
age within arp membership starts at 50
[145]
technically but you can join anybody can
[148]
join any time
[149]
come on you and i have had this
[151]
conversation before because one of the
[153]
things that i have always thought of
[155]
aarp
[156]
was just in my head i'm going to be
[159]
living it
[160]
is i'm going to be living until i'm no
[162]
longer living and that
[163]
has really always been my impression of
[166]
what aarp is regardless of what my
[168]
circumstances are so i've
[170]
i'm you're exactly right i can join now
[173]
but that's something you are trying no
[175]
matter how
[175]
people are in their life they get the
[178]
best quality
[179]
of life regardless and caregiving
[183]
is a huge part of aarp
[187]
and it has to be angie because what we
[189]
know is
[190]
right now today in kentucky there's some
[193]
640
[194]
000 individuals that are delivering
[198]
some sort of family caregiving for a
[200]
loved one
[202]
typically what we do know is that
[204]
typically falls to a female member of
[207]
the family
[207]
in her mid to late 40s who has taken
[210]
care of a mother or
[212]
a father or a sibling
[215]
um so that is
[218]
arp has been working on this on our
[221]
caregiving resources
[223]
a good many years not to put a date on
[226]
it
[227]
but we've got experts and we've got
[228]
resources
[230]
with research and information and
[232]
advocacy
[233]
and particularly right now during covet
[235]
it's more important than ever
[236]
the caregivers are getting the
[238]
information that they need
[240]
and what you're going to hear more of
[242]
about aarp kentucky is the outreach that
[244]
we do across kentucky with our
[246]
volunteers and online and zoom meetings
[249]
and the special caregiving resources
[252]
that we have for aarp
[254]
veterans arp members and the public who
[258]
are veterans
[259]
absolutely we'll hear from charles
[261]
williams coming up in just a little bit
[263]
who will definitely address that
[265]
i want to go back to one word that you
[266]
said because i know they're so
[268]
important to you scott volunteers
[271]
volunteers make the world go round in so
[273]
many ways and especially at aarp
[276]
you know i'm not going to use the word
[277]
army but there is literally
[279]
across the country nationwide arp has
[282]
volunteers who are doing giving back
[285]
so much more to their communities they
[288]
do tremendous work
[290]
because why they care so we love our
[293]
volunteers and they do
[294]
great work well we'd love that
[298]
you're a part of today's show the giving
[300]
back show we're going to be talking more
[302]
about caregiving and like scott said
[304]
we'll talk more with
[305]
members volunteers with aarp but to
[308]
connect with aarp
[309]
kentucky and they have a host of
[311]
resources there
