This is NOT a Game Boy - YouTube

Channel: WULFF DEN

[1]
the og Gameboy was released on April
[5]
21st 1989 that's 30 years down to the
[9]
week
[10]
despite it being essentially a brick in
[12]
your pocket it revolutionized mobile
[15]
gaming most of its success can be
[18]
attributed to the games on there so
[20]
there should be no surprise that there's
[22]
so much nostalgia in this chunky form
[24]
factor and pea-soup LCD screen back then
[28]
it probably didn't look this beat-up in
[30]
2019 this isn't exactly the best way to
[34]
play these great games we've shown a lot
[36]
of Gameboy alternatives before but this
[39]
time the form factor is freakishly close
[42]
to the og gameboy form factor with some
[45]
very smart modernisations and some very
[49]
frustrating new problems the retro flag
[57]
Jeep I case is not in all things
[59]
included Gameboy emulator like some of
[61]
the things we've talked about in the
[63]
past this is essentially just a case for
[66]
the Raspberry Pi 0 which is a very cheap
[68]
teeny-tiny computer you can find them
[71]
for usually around 10 or 20 dollars for
[73]
one with Wireless or five dollars
[76]
without Wireless if you look hard enough
[77]
of course the first thing that happens
[79]
when the public gets their hands on a
[81]
small computer is they try to see what
[83]
type of emulators will run on it and it
[85]
runs a lot more than many of the other
[87]
game boy clones I've tried but it might
[90]
not be better off for it this isn't an
[92]
OP on this case the case is really cool
[95]
but I gotta tackle this from the
[97]
perspective of somebody who just wants
[98]
to play their retro games portably so
[100]
that's what I'm gonna do cuz that would
[102]
be me I don't want any I just
[103]
want to be able to play these games
[104]
portably is this the first minute a
[107]
youtube video can I say both they did a
[109]
fantastic job making this look like an
[111]
OG Game Boy down to the cartridge slot
[113]
it doesn't actually take Game Boy
[115]
cartridges although it might look like
[117]
it this is where the Raspberry Pi
[118]
actually sits you screw it into this
[121]
cartridge piece and that piece slides
[123]
into the rest of the case the physical
[125]
installation is relatively simple the
[128]
screen is awesome super bright and
[131]
really colorful it's not the same
[133]
aspect ratio as the Gameboy but that's
[137]
as it should be the Gameboy has a weird
[139]
aspect ratio the GPI case has a four by
[142]
three screen so it's perfect for Super
[144]
Nintendo Genesis and even PlayStation
[147]
games the buttons are really nice
[149]
I appreciate the positioning of the BNA
[152]
buttons it's true to the original and
[154]
also has the Y and X buttons on top to
[157]
mimic a Super Nintendo controller the
[160]
bit boy has the BNA buttons at a weird
[162]
angle which is fine
[163]
given the bit boys super tiny form
[165]
factor but the GPI case is better setup
[168]
for a wider range of games the G PI also
[171]
has L&R buttons hidden on the back which
[174]
is a really neat feature it's got a
[176]
contrast and volume slider a headphone
[179]
jack and a DC in just like the original
[182]
right the original highs of DC anyway
[186]
yes oh and where the link cable goes is
[189]
where the micro SD card slot goes but
[191]
don't take that out while it's on that's
[194]
important stuff in there there's also a
[196]
micro USB port on the inside for
[198]
firmware updates I should also note that
[200]
this runs on three double A batteries
[202]
which is better than the four that the
[204]
original Gameboy uses but there's a
[207]
bigger problem with double A batteries
[208]
than I was expecting after about a day
[211]
of use the game started to stutter and I
[213]
thought that was just bad emulation but
[215]
then the screens started to flicker and
[218]
then it got worse and worse until
[220]
finally the unit just restarted itself
[223]
and then it struggled to boot back up
[225]
and then it restarted itself again and
[227]
until eventually it just didn't turn
[228]
back on okay I took it apart to see if
[232]
that very delicate ribbon cable has come
[234]
loose and it did not I plugged it in the
[237]
little USB 2 DC power cable that was
[239]
provided with the unit and that seemed
[241]
to work just fine so there was no
[243]
indication that the batteries were dying
[246]
other than the entire unit just not
[248]
working anymore which is a huge problem
[251]
there's a whole shutdown process that
[253]
the unit has to go through and be like
[254]
just unplugging your computer from the
[256]
wall you don't do that you don't do that
[258]
right anyway if you have a Raspberry Pi
[260]
already or you're thinking about getting
[263]
into open source emulator tinkering
[266]
and you want to be able to play those
[268]
games portably then you should probably
[270]
get the GPI case just be careful about
[272]
the whole battery thing it feels like an
[274]
OG gameboy from the buttons all the way
[276]
down to the plastic used for the case
[279]
now let me tell you why the Raspberry Pi
[281]
zero sucks this isn't exactly a
[283]
plug-and-play system you have to put the
[285]
firmware on here yourself retro flag
[288]
sent this unit to me all set up already
[290]
which I'm very grateful for otherwise
[292]
you'd have to go to the retro PI website
[294]
and download their pre mate installation
[296]
but you can't just drag and drop that
[299]
onto the SD card you have to download
[301]
and install er which isn't the end of
[303]
the world this particular version has
[305]
this weird Star Wars skin on it that has
[308]
a different Star Wars related boot
[310]
screen on every single boot up I have
[312]
yet to see the same one twice and I've
[314]
booted this thing up a lot it also plays
[316]
music which is annoying only because it
[320]
sounds so bad there's this weird static
[324]
that's very prevalent in the menu but
[326]
it's always there all the time even
[329]
during gameplay it's also terrifying
[333]
when you turn the unit on and put it
[335]
down to wait for it to boot up and oops
[337]
I left the volume at full blast and now
[338]
it's yelling a Spaceballs quote at me
[340]
from across the room as far as emulation
[342]
goes it's awesome that the Raspberry Pi
[345]
zero can play all different types of
[347]
emulators from the Atari 2600 all the
[349]
way up to the PlayStation but it doesn't
[352]
run any of those emulators perfectly I
[355]
was actually pretty surprised by how
[357]
well it ran some PlayStation games it's
[359]
not amazing you are missing the l2 and
[362]
r2 buttons which could be a problem but
[364]
it gets the job done
[366]
starfox is really bad I noticed some
[370]
slowdown with Mega Man X on SNES and I
[373]
don't think it's the 50 Hertz European
[375]
version I noticed severe slowdown with
[378]
mega man zero for Gameboy advanced this
[381]
thing should have plenty of power to run
[383]
a game like that I also noticed that
[385]
Sonic 3 sounds horrible which is a
[389]
telltale sign of a bad Sega Genesis
[391]
emulator and it's not just because of
[392]
the fuzz it's like a different pitch
[396]
there's also some weird slow down in
[399]
shinobi 3 now I haven't tried every
[400]
single game but you can get the hint
[403]
that a lot of games are gonna have some
[405]
weird slowdown
[406]
everything is playable don't get me
[408]
wrong and it looks good for what it is
[411]
just don't expect analog or even PC
[414]
emulator quality out of this thing it's
[417]
just ok emulation gameboy games run just
[420]
fine though like I said before the
[422]
Raspberry Pi can just be turned off
[424]
there's a whole shutdown sequence that
[426]
has to go through shout-out to retro
[428]
future for reminding me of this retro
[431]
flag has an on/off switch on this case
[434]
and they have a configuration file that
[436]
you can download off their site that
[437]
will run the power off script whenever
[440]
you power it off or flick this switch to
[442]
the off setting they gave no other
[445]
instructions besides just download the
[447]
script so hopefully by the time this
[448]
releases for real there will be more
[450]
clear instructions for how to get this
[452]
thing working
[452]
mine was pre-installed even though I
[454]
don't see those files on the microSD
[456]
card at all maybe you see something here
[460]
that's similar there's also an on-off
[462]
safe shutdown switch in the battery
[465]
compartment I don't understand what
[467]
that's for since you have to take the
[469]
batteries out to even access it and
[471]
won't it be off by that point anyway so
[474]
I guess this switch is just gonna stay
[476]
on forever I should also note that this
[478]
thing takes forever to actually boot up
[481]
by the time it's done you'll already be
[482]
on your phone looking at memes and then
[484]
what's even the point of having a
[485]
portable console to begin with if you
[488]
have a limitless budget and you're
[490]
looking for an easy portable emulator I
[493]
suggest the GPD XD it's very expensive
[496]
but you can play all different types of
[499]
games on there very easily some people
[500]
even get Dreamcast games running good on
[502]
there hell I would even suggest a DS
[504]
Lite with an R 4 before suggesting this
[507]
thing if you just want to play gameboy
[509]
games I still recommend the bit boy it's
[513]
way cheaper at only $40.00 the screen is
[516]
just as nice as the GP case and it's way
[519]
way smaller you can actually put this
[522]
thing in your pocket and forget that
[524]
it's there it's also pick up and play
[526]
everything's all set up and ready to
[528]
already you just have to drop the roms
[531]
on an SD card and that's it and the
[534]
batteries rechargeable I'd only
[537]
recommend the GP case if you already
[539]
have a Raspberry Pi or you know exactly
[541]
what you're getting into with the
[543]
Raspberry Pi maybe you know the
[546]
limitations of the platform and you can
[548]
tinker around with it to make the games
[550]
run great if you do then let me know
[552]
because I need to know that it's
[554]
relatively inexpensive for what it is at
[556]
$70 for the case and under $20 for the
[559]
Raspberry Pi itself that's pretty good
[561]
for something that could run all of
[563]
these different emulators portably even
[564]
playstation but it doesn't run many of
[567]
them particularly well so there are a
[569]
lot of better options out there for most
[572]
people again I'm saying most people
[573]
because I know there's gonna be plenty
[575]
of you in the comments talk about how
[577]
easy Raspberry Pi is to do but I don't
[580]
care I don't want to do it I want it to
[583]
work and there's so many easier things
[586]
out there like an actual computer or if
[589]
you just want to play gameboy games the
[591]
bit boy is a much better option it also
[594]
does nes games too by the way which for
[596]
$40 is pretty damn sweet what do you
[598]
guys think about the retro flag Jeep i
[600]
case which one of y'all out there is
[602]
this for if it piques your interest
[605]
specifically let me know why in the
[607]
comments below add me on Twitter any of
[608]
all this other social media garbage also
[610]
let me know your favorite Gameboy game
[611]
is because as you can see I've been on a
[614]
Game Boy kick lately and I need more
[616]
games to play on that platform
[618]
anyway we got new videos and livestreams
[619]
all the time or schedule is usually on a
[621]
pin suite over on our twitter we got
[622]
wolfed in live right here on youtube
[624]
every single wednesday PM is to town we
[625]
hang out with each other I do a lot of
[626]
podcasts and if you support us here on
[628]
YouTube or over on twitch.tv slash wolf
[631]
them by subscribing you can use Amazon
[633]
Prime if you have it make it to twitch
[635]
contest get twitch Prime you have videos
[637]
like this early private chat time with
[638]
us oh we're gonna play Mario Kart with
[640]
supporters finally we're finally doing a
[641]
supporter stream again you get priority
[643]
when we play games at the community of
[645]
your supporter if you didn't gather that
[646]
already but of course the most important
[648]
thing you do is just subscribe to the
[649]
channel it's the easiest thing it's Reds
[650]
video with friend a friend who would
[651]
have no problem setting this thing up
[654]
for you so that you don't have to thank
[655]
yes very much you have yourself
[658]
you
