Wealthfront (long term) user review; 6 Year update - YouTube
Channel: Wanderer001 Reviews
[0]
you're here because you've heard about wealthfront聽
as a robo advisor you're now here because you're聽聽
[5]
looking for somebody who's been using it for a聽
lengthy period of time in my case i've been using聽聽
[10]
wealthfront as my primary investment vehicle聽
for over six years still not sponsored so聽聽
[16]
you can take what i'm going to give you with a聽
grain of salt in that i'm here just to give you聽聽
[20]
data on my personal experiences with it i'm not聽
going to over promise and say you're going to get聽聽
[25]
17 returns year over year using wealthfront聽
or have a weird-looking thumbnail with an o聽聽
[32]
face i'm here to give you data and my experiences聽
having used this platform for as long as i have聽聽
[38]
hello i'm Wanderer001 and just like i said this聽
is my long-term review of wealthfront i've been聽聽
[45]
using it since it was actually a green and orange聽
site as you can see wealthfront has changed itself聽聽
[51]
quite a bit pretty much going away from all the聽
green and moving over to a purple transition so聽聽
[57]
we're not here to nitpick them on user interface聽
stuff but i will admit over here on the right hand聽聽
[62]
side i am happy that i no longer have to block聽
out information for pending transactions and so聽聽
[67]
forth the one thing i will admit is for a lot聽
of this stuff now you really have to dig into聽聽
[72]
a lot of the menus find that information which i聽
don't necessarily know if i'm happy with or not聽聽
[77]
starting at the top you have your goals i have聽
one goal and that goal is just to retire you can聽聽
[82]
see at 65 i will supposedly have 2.8 million based聽
on this number here which is encompassing all of聽聽
[89]
my accounts and as you can see it is giving聽
me information about how they came up with聽聽
[92]
that because i happen to click on that selecting聽
goals will show you you have one goal and it is聽聽
[97]
comfortable you can add more goals if you want but聽
i have covered the goals as well as other aspects聽聽
[103]
of wealthfront in many of my past videos which can聽
be found in the upper right hand corner right now聽聽
[108]
however if this is your first time they have聽
changed the menu up top here so our overview is聽聽
[113]
where all of our accounts are listed next we have聽
explore which will let you explore some of the聽聽
[119]
changes that they've actually made to wealthfront聽
and back in september they introduce socially聽聽
[126]
responsible investment portfolios they still have聽
their classic portfolio but now you have socially聽聽
[133]
responsible and direct indexing some of these聽
options do not become available to you until you聽聽
[138]
reach certain thresholds of money in your account聽
mainly the direct indexing if we come in here聽聽
[144]
it will show you information about that but it聽
also says that you cannot do this unless you聽聽
[150]
have over a hundred thousand in your investment聽
account now if we selected socially responsible聽聽
[156]
it will give you an idea of how well the returns聽
have been and then based on a risk score these are聽聽
[163]
going to select funds within these areas which聽
are considered socially responsible and i like聽聽
[169]
the fact that they brought back the slider so聽
you can kind of tell how well things are doing聽聽
[174]
you can also select add to profile if you want i'm聽
going to pop back and show you the classic profile聽聽
[181]
here it's showing you the returns over three years聽
and if we slide this around you can see the rough聽聽
[189]
estimate as to how well your returns would have聽
been now they do allow you to edit each individual聽聽
[195]
portfolio and i'll show you that a little later聽
but i like that they have brought back the ease聽聽
[201]
of being able to check the different profiles and聽
not only that here you can see us stock etfs bonds聽聽
[207]
they break out all the things that you can have聽
now some of which are only accessible in your聽聽
[213]
roth ira versus an investment but if we come up聽
to us it will show us everything that they have聽聽
[219]
as possible options clicking into any one of these聽
will again show you market returns as well as聽聽
[226]
lots of other useful information for it we're聽
gonna come back to our overview or main page聽聽
[233]
because the other one is just transferring聽
funds around and then inviting friends which聽聽
[238]
we'll talk about a little later so those have聽
been major platform changes now let's move on to聽聽
[245]
returns because well that's probably your primary聽
focus of why you're here we will come over to my聽聽
[250]
ira and here we can see up at the top i like the聽
fact that they have this information very visible聽聽
[256]
for you you have all-time returns contributions聽
for 2020 and then 2021 now i'm doing this聽聽
[264]
during a particular volatile time in the market聽
where things have been going up and down for the聽聽
[270]
last three to four days in fact right before聽
filming this the market was down about 900聽聽
[275]
points for the dow jones and i do that because i聽
want you to know that returns are not a guarantee聽聽
[283]
but if you passively invest consistently you will聽
dollar cost average into the market thereby making聽聽
[290]
things not look as scary here you can see over聽
the six years that i've been doing it here's our聽聽
[295]
major dip back in 2020 and then we've just been聽
kind of going up if we come down to 2022 you'll聽聽
[304]
actually see that my account overall is down five聽
percent based on current market but coming back聽聽
[312]
to all you can see that pops back to being up聽
in the green and they move the location to find聽聽
[319]
this so if you come over to your all time here and聽
click the i it will bring up time weighted return聽聽
[325]
money weighted return and dividends and here聽
you can see this dividend is based on the six聽聽
[330]
years that i've been doing it that's not counting聽
any asset appreciation that's just dividends so聽聽
[337]
if we're going to look back at my previous returns聽
my money weighted return for my roth last time i聽聽
[344]
did this for my five and a half review i was at聽
93.66 here you can see we are sitting at 82.7聽聽
[353]
gone down however the time weighted was 87.43聽
and here it's 87.99 so this has actually gone聽聽
[363]
up ever so slightly and if you ever want to know聽
the difference between time weighted and money聽聽
[368]
weighted simply click the i and it will let you聽
know the information about that again i covered聽聽
[373]
that in past videos so i won't be covering聽
that again but this is a better representation聽聽
[380]
of your portfolio based on the inception of聽
when you had started investing money over how聽聽
[385]
many years you've been doing it as opposed to when聽
money's going in and out of your account so that's聽聽
[389]
my roth ira as you can see six years it's still聽
going in the right direction minus these blips聽聽
[397]
up and down but keep in mind you're investing in聽
something like this for the long haul let's take聽聽
[402]
a look over at my individual investment account聽
which has a risk score of 7.5 with me playing with聽聽
[410]
some of the investments in here if you saw that聽
last one i put some technology stocks in here the聽聽
[416]
ira that you saw before was a risk score of 6.5聽
with minor tweaking adding more into my stocks聽聽
[423]
and again if we come over to 2020 you can see i'm聽
actually down 4.88 not as much as the previous for聽聽
[432]
my roth ira but you can also see that it has聽
tax lost harvest 1.28 cents as of 2022 and if聽聽
[439]
we bring that into all time you could see 322.33聽
cents that is the neat thing that your investment聽聽
[447]
account can do that your roth ira does not do it聽
tax lost harvests things selling them when you聽聽
[453]
lose value in your account to help you save money聽
on paper on your taxes but if we come up to our聽聽
[460]
returns here we can see our money weighted return聽
last time i did this was 78.50 we are sitting at聽聽
[469]
64.10 our time weighted return previously was聽
59.21 and here we're looking at 59.26 so again聽聽
[479]
it has gone up a little bit but because of the聽
markets being what they are right now you'll聽聽
[484]
notice here 37 and 38 so current versus our聽
target that's because the market has kind of聽聽
[492]
been going down a little bit but again i wanted聽
to show you this because of the upward trajectory聽聽
[498]
that you get when you continuously invest money聽
into something like this and as mentioned before聽聽
[506]
if we scroll down you have the option to edit聽
your portfolio see recent activities so if聽聽
[512]
you wanted to see your transactions dividends聽
withdrawals this is how you'd be able to do it聽聽
[518]
now if we select edit portfolio you can聽
see that it's saying custom i can select聽聽
[525]
switch portfolio in which i can go back to the聽
classic or socially responsible indexing if i聽聽
[531]
had over a hundred thousand if i selected聽
classic we can adjust our risk score could聽聽
[536]
because based on what i told it it says i should聽
be an 8.5 out of 10. i'm a wimp i know i should聽聽
[542]
make it higher but it's difficult for me to do聽
that if i come back to our edit portfolio area聽聽
[548]
and scroll down here we have our ad investment聽
and i bring this up because the other big thing聽聽
[555]
that wealthfront introduced in 2021 back in july聽
was this right here cryptocurrency trust selecting聽聽
[564]
this will allow you to either select from ethereum聽
or bitcoin now adding these to your portfolio will聽聽
[571]
give you exposure to bitcoin or ethereum and here聽
you can see these are very tantalizing returns聽聽
[577]
but it is a much bumpier ride and one of the聽
things that i do not particularly care for聽聽
[582]
especially with the bitcoin trust is if we come聽
down to our expense ratio it is two percent聽聽
[591]
the rest of your etfs that you're going to聽
be investing in with wealthfront normally聽聽
[595]
are 0.16.25 at most to have exposure to bitcoin聽
at 2 it it's a little hard for me to to chew and聽聽
[607]
there are other alternatives if you want to get聽
exposure to bitcoin without having to actually put聽聽
[612]
up your own money over in the corner there you'll聽
see a link for a video that i did on a browser聽聽
[618]
extension called lolly which will allow you to聽
use a browser extension just like honey which聽聽
[624]
will allow you to get cash back from purchases聽
made through lolly much like a rocket on or honey聽聽
[632]
instead of getting cash back you get bitcoin聽
back so if you're interested in that review聽聽
[637]
over there in the corner as well as an affiliate聽
link full disclosure if you're interested in that聽聽
[642]
but we're gonna come back to our overview page one聽
more time to talk about the personal cash account聽聽
[649]
i still have mixed feelings about the personal聽
cash account i dislike that they dropped the聽聽
[656]
interest rate so drastically so quickly a lot of聽
people called it and you know what i agree it does聽聽
[662]
feel a bit like a bait and switch however there聽
are specific aspects having a cash account that i聽聽
[668]
do like uh normally i keep about a thousand聽
dollars in here because what you can do is聽聽
[673]
transfer between your investment accounts and your聽
personal cash account within five minutes if you聽聽
[680]
do a transfer from a brick and mortar into your聽
wealthfront account you're looking at a day and a聽聽
[686]
half between sending money and getting invested so聽
the ability to invest within five minutes was very聽聽
[693]
useful today when the market was down 900 points聽
and allowing me to jump in when it was read so i聽聽
[699]
like keeping a little bit of money in here and my聽
business account up there but i don't think that's聽聽
[705]
the super selling factor that it was when it聽
originally launched for wealthfront i hate to say聽聽
[710]
i'm just being honest well i'm going to sneak this聽
in at the end because well this happened while i聽聽
[714]
was editing the video to go live and you probably聽
have heard about it too if you're a current聽聽
[719]
wealthfront client wealthfront has agreed to be聽
purchased by ubs bank it is a swiss-based bank but聽聽
[729]
what does this mean for you and me well supposedly聽
based on the wealthfront article and several other聽聽
[735]
articles that i have been checking into uh regard聽
to this is well wealthfront is supposedly going聽聽
[741]
to be a subsidiary of ubs bank they will聽
still be able to operate as they have been聽聽
[748]
but whenever something like this happens you聽
have to wonder well what happens now will ubs聽聽
[754]
bank start pushing their etfs or mutual funds onto聽
the wealthfront system even if the expense ratio聽聽
[761]
isn't as good as you would get with a schwab or a聽
vanguard i i have paused because reading through聽聽
[767]
the article that's here from wealthprunt's聽
blog page which is the same article that聽聽
[772]
was emailed to me it says that the 1.4 billion聽
transaction helps them accelerate their offering聽聽
[780]
time horizon meaning we'll get new features聽
much faster but now i have questions about聽聽
[788]
what about the cash account which you just聽
saw what happens with that you partnered with聽聽
[793]
several different banks before to get the best聽
rate are we now going to be stuck with ubs only聽聽
[798]
as our cash account holder wealthfront states聽
that nothing for its current customers will聽聽
[804]
change and they will continue to operate as they聽
have been in the past will that hold true well聽聽
[810]
we will have to wait and see what the next six聽
months to a year haven't stored for wealthfront聽聽
[816]
now being a subsidiary product of a bank a brick聽
and mortar bank that was the big thing it is聽聽
[823]
wealthfront was a was a fintech startup to get聽
millennials who are comfortable with technology聽聽
[829]
out of the big banks and now they're owned by聽
a big bank ubs i can see why they're doing it聽聽
[834]
they want to leverage the technology that聽
wealthfront has but as a fintech investor聽聽
[842]
i don't know how i feel about wealthfront being聽
bought out i'm not saying this is the beginning聽聽
[847]
of the end but it might be time to consider聽
looking elsewhere depending on what happens聽聽
[853]
after the acquisition fully goes through with that聽
if you are still interested in wealthfront i will聽聽
[859]
have a referral code in the description area of聽
this video you can click on that and for now you聽聽
[865]
can get five thousand dollars managed fee free if聽
you so choose to invest and bank with wealthfront聽聽
[872]
for the time being with that being said we'll聽
just have to wait and see what the future holds聽聽
[876]
i have been Wanderer001 if you have any questions聽
