the former 43rd treasurer or the 43rd
[2]
church
[3]
of the united states rosie rios and the
[5]
president president biden's former
[7]
senior political advisor movella they
[9]
have teamed up with other colleagues for
[11]
a new show
[12]
called unicorn hunters i talked to them
[14]
about how they hope this show will
[16]
create access to wealth
[18]
among diversities rosie and mo thank you
[21]
so much for joining us back here in
[22]
washington d.c
[24]
a city where neither one of you are
[25]
strangers
[27]
i have to imagine did you meet here
[29]
before you started unicorn hunters
[32]
yes we we did meet we actually i i
[35]
jokingly say i saw rosie rios across a
[38]
room
[39]
and forged my way through the crowd
[42]
ellen and said i'm gonna meet that
[44]
lady i knew she was special and she was
[46]
amazing so we've been friends for
[48]
now over a decade thank you moan hello
[51]
ellen thank you for having us yes it was
[53]
definitely love at first sight
[55]
mo and i made a joke the other day you
[57]
know i think mostly move over benefit
[59]
we're now the new mosey so there you go
[61]
yes he's a great friend well now you are
[64]
together again reunited on unicorn
[67]
hunters
[67]
why was this project something that you
[70]
both felt very passionate to be part of
[72]
well this was you know moe's brainchild
[74]
and when he when he called me to ask me
[76]
if i wanted to
[77]
be a panelist on the show of course i i
[80]
couldn't say no for all the right
[81]
reasons so unicorn hunters
[83]
is a reality series that allows uh
[86]
pre-ipo opportunity investments and and
[89]
for me this
[90]
was kind of coming full circle because
[92]
it really started from an access to
[94]
capital conference
[95]
that we hosted in treasury in 2011 that
[98]
led to the task force that eventually
[100]
made the recommendation to the congress
[101]
to
[102]
to pass the jobs act of 2012 and
[105]
subsequently the crowdfunding provisions
[107]
from the sec allowed a show like unicorn
[110]
hunters to come together
[111]
wow yeah and you know ellen for me it
[114]
was um
[115]
frankly kind of a continuation of a
[118]
whole career
[118]
of fighting for equality and inclusion
[121]
when i
[122]
came to the realization uh that it was
[124]
like a slap in my face when i realized
[126]
that
[127]
women minorities many of our communities
[131]
that are marginalized and
[132]
disenfranchised
[133]
didn't have access to wealth creation or
[136]
access to the investment
[138]
ecosystem this was a no-brainer for me
[140]
it was like that final thing i wanted to
[142]
do on my journey
[144]
to try to create access for folks all
[146]
over the world that
[147]
today are intimidated by the investment
[150]
process
[152]
i'm glad you guys brought up the
[153]
investing culture because you typically
[155]
think of maybe
[156]
one group who knows what they're doing
[157]
in that area is that something you are
[159]
definitely trying to break
[161]
through unicorn i've been breaking
[164]
stereotypes just like rosie has
[166]
i think all of our careers ellen and so
[169]
yes for me personally yes i think the
[172]
show is all about
[173]
uh breaking down those walls those
[176]
barriers if you will
[178]
that have kept the average human being
[181]
out of the investment ecosystem
[183]
and part of its intimidation part of its
[185]
fear part of it's a lack of knowledge
[188]
part of it is a lack of access and so
[191]
we're so proud
[192]
at unicorn hunters honestly that we
[194]
provide all of those things
[196]
during our show there are little
[197]
education boxes
[199]
on the screen throughout each episode
[201]
defining terminology right that
[204]
otherwise would have probably made me go
[206]
oh i don't know what that means i'm not
[208]
going there
[208]
so we're really proud about all of that
[211]
yeah
[212]
what what are some of those biggest
[214]
obstacles especially in the lgbtq plus
[217]
side that we have to cross in order to
[220]
make sure we do
[221]
have that equality i guess technically
[223]
today is the last day of pride month and
[225]
and i'm not a big fan of
[227]
months every day should be pride day
[229]
every day should be women's history
[231]
month and so you know i i want to
[233]
make this world so that we're not a
[235]
novelty
[236]
we're a norm you know just to kind of
[238]
take the point a little further
[240]
you know as i mentioned you know when it
[241]
comes to women the numbers don't
[243]
lie so just you've probably seen the
[245]
numbers you know last year there was
[246]
about 150 billion dollars
[248]
that was allocated in the vc world and
[250]
of that only
[251]
2.2 percent went to female founders
[255]
but the sadder part is that it was 2.6
[259]
the year prior so we're heading in the
[260]
wrong direction so
[262]
in my opinion you have to be very
[263]
deliberate and intentional right so it's
[265]
called awareness and action
[267]
are being conscious and conscientious
[269]
and this is where unicorn hunters comes
[271]
into play
[272]
and i will add ellen that that
[274]
percentage is abysmal
[276]
obviously and the the numbers for
[279]
lgbtq plus the numbers for latinos those
[283]
numbers for asian americans african
[284]
americans and so on
[286]
are even worse so it is a
[289]
very horrific picture and that unicorn
[291]
hunters we believe we're a
[293]
step in the right direction and a part
[295]
of the solution
[296]
mo and rosie also told me they have been
[298]
renewed for season two so you need to go
[300]
now to unicornhunters.com
[302]
to see those episodes of season one
[304]
before season two starts
