- Hey, Freebs Nation!
[1]
Jordan Page with funcheaporfree.com here.
[3]
I am in my fancy-pantsy new office,
[5]
and today we are talking about budgeting
[8]
and how to never go over budget again.
[12]
Mm-hmm, I'm serious, mm-hmm.
[14]
(lively music)
[31]
If you are new around here,
[33]
then let me introduce myself.
[34]
Hi, I'm Jordan.
[36]
I am a budgeting guru.
[39]
I have a budget program called budgetbootcamp.com,
[41]
and for the last 10 years
[43]
I have been sharing my budgeting,
[44]
and frugal living, and finance tips on Rachel Ray,
[48]
Good Morning America, the Today Show, on my blog,
[51]
I do in person events and conferences,
[53]
and I speak all over the country.
[55]
It is so much fun,
[56]
but here's one thing you should know about me.
[58]
I am terrible at budgeting.
[59]
I'm terrible at math.
[60]
I don't enjoy it.
[62]
I did not study finance.
[63]
This is not something that comes naturally to me.
[65]
Wait, before you turn off the video, hear me out.
[68]
Just because I don't naturally enjoy them,
[70]
or I'm not naturally good at them
[71]
doesn't mean that I don't need to focus on budgeting, right?
[74]
And either do you.
[76]
Welcome to adulthood!
[77]
Whether we like it or not,
[78]
we all need to make money to survive,
[80]
and we all need to manage that money well
[82]
in order to thrive.
[83]
Okay, that was really good.
[84]
That was off the cuff.
[85]
We need to put that on a tee shirt.
[86]
Somebody write that down.
[88]
So today I'm going to share with you
[90]
five of my super quick top tips
[93]
for not only like setting a budget,
[94]
but for never going over a budget again.
[97]
Now do not get me wrong.
[98]
Just because you're setting a budget
[100]
does not mean that you can't spend money
[102]
or do anything fun forever.
[103]
I am not that kind of budget guru.
[105]
I really like myself some nails and cute clothes.
[108]
Let's be honest.
[109]
So I'm not going to sit here and tell you
[110]
never to spend money again.
[111]
I'm telling you how to set practical, actual budgets
[115]
that you will practically and actually keep.
[117]
You excited?
[118]
You should be.
[119]
But before we move on,
[120]
for those of you who love these tips,
[121]
or just want even more handholding and more help,
[123]
please check out my budgeting program.
[125]

[126]
Use the promo code YouTube for 10% off,
[128]
'cause I like ya.
[129]
Alright, now let's get onto the tips.
[131]
All right, so budget tip number one is simplify.
[134]
I cannot stress this enough.
[137]
As with anything in life,
[138]
if you try to make it too intricate,
[140]
too complicated, too fancy schmancy,
[143]
it will not be sustainable.
[144]
You will not be able to keep it up.
[146]
When we were first getting out of debt,
[148]
we tried everything again.
[149]
None of it really worked.
[150]
It wasn't until I came up with my own system
[152]
that was so simple.
[154]
It was just easy to do.
[155]
I call it my budget envelope system.
[158]
Now this is different than cash envelope,
[160]
so don't be tricked just because it's in an envelope.
[163]
This is my own fancy schmancy envelope
[167]
that we sell on my website.
[169]
I will link it below,
[170]
but you can do this with any envelope.
[173]
It does not have to be this cute, fancy one.
[175]
But I mean, it is really cute.
[176]
Like look, it has gold on it.
[178]
Ooh!
[179]
But instead of focusing on 10,000 different budgets
[183]
and all these different cash envelopes
[184]
for a pet envelope, and a hair envelope,
[186]
and an eating out envelope,
[187]
and the nails envelope, but stop.
[189]
All I want you to do is have two budgets
[192]
that you focus on every week.
[194]
Now you're going to have other budgets.
[195]
We teach this in Budget Bootcamp,
[197]
because you need a budget for like your mortgage,
[199]
or your extracurricular activities,
[200]
but I'm not talking about that stuff.
[202]
I'm talking about what you have control over,
[204]
what you spend money on week to week.
[206]
That's what I want you to focus on.
[208]
Like groceries, eating out,
[209]
clothing, general shopping, Amazon.
[212]
Amazon, slow down, honey.
[215]
Those are the expenses,
[216]
and that's the spending that will make or break your budget.
[219]
I want you now to take that
[221]
and break it into only two categories.
[223]
Two, that is it.
[224]
The first one will be whatever you spend the most money on.
[227]
For me, that is groceries and food.
[229]
So I am calling that your main budget.
[232]
Your main budget is whatever you spend
[233]
the most money on week to week.
[235]
The second budget, you ready for this?
[237]
Other, your other budget,
[239]
and that means everything else.
[241]
So simple, what?
[242]
Basically give yourself a budget each week.
[245]
Is it $200 a week that you have for groceries,
[248]
or eating out, or shopping?
[249]
Is it $50 a week?
[251]
Is it $500 a week?
[253]
Choose an amount and then just split it up
[255]
into just two budgets.
[256]
So you have enough for whatever you need to spend money on,
[259]
but then it gives you an amount left
[261]
that you could spend on whatever else.
[263]
You need to get your nails done that week?
[264]
Great.
[265]
You need to get your dog groomed that week?
[266]
Great.
[267]
Flexibility and simplifying is so important.
[270]
So to summarize,
[271]
instead of having 8 million cash envelopes,
[274]
and all these different budgets that you're managing,
[276]
your week to week spending,
[277]
you're going to break into two budgets.
[279]
Two, and you're going to track it on an envelope.
[282]
I'm not going to take time to teach you how to do this.
[283]
I have an entire video on this,
[285]
but by tracking it on an envelope,
[287]
it will make it so that you never go over budget again.
[290]
I promise.
[291]
And this actually segues in tip number two,
[294]
which is to budget by week, not by month.
[298]
Now, again, we're talking about
[300]
the spending that you do day to day, week to week.
[303]
Let's say you're on a diet.
[304]
How come you wouldn't count your calories
[306]
an entire month at a time?
[308]
Well, because that would be a really high number,
[310]
and a lot to manage.
[312]
And 30, 31 days is really hard for your brain to compute.
[316]
Whereas one day at a time,
[317]
or seven days at a time is so much more manageable.
[320]
It's the same with your money.
[322]
Instead of giving yourself a budget,
[324]
let's say that's a thousand dollars
[326]
for the whole month for everything.
[327]
Well, guess what?
[328]
By day six, you're just like,
[330]
you don't even know what today is.
[331]
You don't even know how much money you have left.
[332]
It's so much to manage and track.
[335]
Break it down.
[336]
Let's say you have a thousand dollars a month
[338]
for your week to week spending.
[339]
And that includes groceries and entertainment,
[341]
and eating out, whatever else.
[342]
Great.
[342]
A thousand dollars.
[343]
Break it down per week.
[345]
You're only tracking $250 a week, one,
[347]
250 a week, two, three, and four.
[348]
500, 500, that's a thousand dollars.
[351]
Yes, I count like that on my fingers in real life.
[353]
I told you I'm not very good at math.
[354]
$250 over six or seven days is
[357]
so much more manageable than
[358]
a thousand dollars over 30 or 31 days.
[361]
And then again, go back to tip one,
[363]
and take it one step farther,
[364]
and split that $250 into two.
[367]
It's only six or seven days that you need to manage.
[371]
And then guess what?
[372]
Monday comes, and woo!
[374]
Your money starts all over again,
[375]
and you only have to track that for six or seven days.
[378]
I show you exactly how to break this down
[381]
on a simple envelope.
[382]
If you go to the link below,
[384]
it's a quick video here on YouTube
[386]
that will change your life.
[387]
The reason we do an envelope is not only for easy tracking,
[390]
but it's really small,
[391]
and it usually will fit right inside your wallet,
[393]
or your purse, or your backpack.
[395]
Also, it's important because as you go shopping,
[398]
you can stick your receipts in here,
[400]
so that you lose track or you need to return something,
[402]
it's all in one place.
[403]
One thing to note about my budgeting system
[405]
is you do not have to use cash.
[407]
Once you get a handle on your credit cards,
[409]
I actually prefer digital payments
[411]
like credit cards or debit cards,
[413]
because then you have digital record of everything
[415]
you spent money on,
[416]
and if you lose your card or it gets stolen,
[418]
you just cancel it.
[418]
If you lose your cash, it's just gone.
[420]
It's just gone.
[421]
So get a handle on your credit cards,
[423]
don't overspend,
[424]
and then as soon as you have a handle on them,
[426]
go ahead, use those cards.
[428]
They work great with my envelope system.
[430]
Again, link below.
[431]
I'll show you how.
[433]
Stop everything.
[433]
I have a bonus tip for you.
[436]
I want to add something about my tip of budgeting per week
[439]
and not per month,
[440]
and really the bread and butter of this,
[442]
the creme de la creme,
[444]
is that you need to take that weekly budget
[446]
and be as frugal with it as possible.
[448]
Because if you're just like maxing out your budget
[450]
every single week,
[451]
it's better than overspending,
[453]
but really what you need to do is get frugal.
[457]
So this is kind of a sub tip, if you will.
[459]
We'll call it tip 2A.
[461]
Take your budget for the week and squeeze it.
[464]
Use coupons, use apps, buy things on sale.
[468]
Buy something used.
[469]
Get creative with your budget,
[471]
and find every way you can to squeeze every dollar.
[474]
Use money saving apps.
[476]
For me, one of my favorite money saving apps
[478]
is Fetch Rewards.
[480]
It's a completely free app.
[481]
It doesn't cost you a dime.
[483]
And if you guys follow me on Instagram,
[485]
you see me talking about it a ton,
[486]
because it saves my family so much money.
[488]
All you do is you go shopping as you normally do.
[491]
Grocery shopping or otherwise.
[493]
You take your receipt,
[494]
you scan it into the app,
[495]
and you get rewards totally for free
[498]
that you can then turn into gift cards.
[500]
So for me, every single week,
[501]
when I order my groceries,
[503]
whether I get a physical receipt,
[504]
or whether I get an e-receipt,
[506]
I scan it into the app.
[508]
It gives me rewards,
[509]
and I love to get Amazon gift cards personally.
[512]
And then I turn around and use those gift cards
[513]
to buy things like diapers and baby items.
[515]
And guess what?
[516]
When I buy diapers off of Amazon,
[518]
I can scan that receipt and get extra rewards for that.
[521]
So it's just a cyclical saving that is genius.
[524]
One thing that's really cool about Amazon
[525]
is you can actually connect it directly,
[527]
so that qualified purchases automatically
[530]
give you rewards and bonuses.
[532]
I have a unique link below.
[533]
Be sure to click that link,
[535]
sign up for fetch.
[536]
Use my code for 2000 bonus points.
[538]
Keep it on your phone, keep it active,
[540]
and any time you go shopping,
[541]
be sure to scan your receipts.
[544]
E-receipts or physical receipts,
[546]
and it can be anywhere.
[547]
Grocery shopping, physical stores, even Amazon,
[550]
and turn those into gift cards.
[552]
And that my friends is how you maximize your weekly budget.
[556]
Boom.
[557]
All right, budget tip number three is,
[559]
are you ready for this one?
[560]
It's a doozy.
[561]
Open at least seven bank accounts.
[564]
Seven, you heard me right, seven.
[567]
This is where a lot of people stop listening,
[569]
because they think, "Man, this chick is crazy!"
[572]
I mean, you wouldn't be wrong,
[574]
but hear me out.
[575]
Traditionally, the way our grandparents
[577]
and our parents banked,
[578]
they would drive their buggy to the bank,
[581]
and walk inside,
[582]
and fill out a deposit slip,
[584]
and get along their merry little way,
[585]
and then go plant some more corn.
[587]
Welcome to 2020, folks.
[589]
Banking is a little more slick than that.
[591]
Not only does it not cost you money
[594]
or any hassle at all to open bank accounts,
[596]
but in a lot of situations,
[597]
you can actually get paid to open bank accounts.
[600]
And the technology is awesome.
[603]
To have multiple bank accounts,
[605]
think of it like a filing cabinet.
[607]
Let's say you have one drawer on the top
[609]
that represents your checking account.
[611]
One drawer on the bottom
[612]
that represents your savings account.
[613]
If you open at least seven bank accounts,
[615]
it's like adding file folders to the drawer.
[618]
So let's say your savings drawer,
[620]
you open it up.
[621]
You can have a savings account just for Christmas.
[624]
It's there when you need it.
[626]
Same with checking.
[627]
I have a checking account for me.
[628]
Bubba has a checking account for him,
[630]
so that all of our financial responsibilities for the week
[633]
that I'm in charge of,
[634]
that money automatically drafts into there every week.
[636]
So when I need to spend money on
[639]
whatever's on my envelope that week,
[641]
I just use my debit card for that account,
[643]
or my credit card,
[644]
and pay the credit card bill from my account.
[646]
The more bank accounts you have,
[648]
the more organized and manageable your money is.
[651]
I promise this works.
[653]
I have a video that goes into way more detail on this,
[656]
'cause I'm sure you have a lot of questions.
[658]
If you want to know more in how to do this accurately,
[660]
just go to that video.
[662]
I promise it breaks everything down.
[664]
Alright, budget tip number four is
[666]
get yourself a budget planner.
[668]
You need to have something physical
[670]
that you're keeping track.
[672]
This could be a digital spreadsheet
[675]
on Google Sheets that you create.
[676]
This could be a journal from TJ Maxx
[679]
that you just customize yourself
[681]
or, oh, what?
[682]
I designed the coolest budget planner
[684]
in the history of ever?
[685]
Oh, weird!
[687]
If you want to,
[688]
you can buy one of my fancy schmancy budget planners
[691]
that does come with an entire year's worth of envelopes.
[693]
And I will link these below,
[696]
but listen, however you want to do it.
[698]
I'm not saying that you have to buy this
[699]
in order to budget properly.
[701]
I just, I mean, this book is pretty amazing.
[704]
It has everything.
[705]
It has debt tracker, savings tracker,
[708]
it shows you how to divide up financial responsibilities
[711]
without fighting with your spouse,
[712]
it has weekly tracking and check-in.
[714]
I mean, it's pretty amazing if I do say so myself.
[718]
But fancy budget planner aside,
[720]
get yourself something that tracks it.
[723]
You need to physically write down your goals.
[725]
You need a physical place to put the envelopes
[727]
when you're done tracking what you're spending.
[730]
You need a place that every week,
[732]
and then again, at the end of every month,
[734]
you are going back and reviewing your numbers,
[736]
and making sure that you're staying on track.
[738]
This is not as daunting as it sounds.
[741]
Every Sunday night, Bubba and I sit down,
[742]
and we plan our week,
[744]
and we plan our meals or whatever,
[746]
and we're just casually doing that.
[747]
Not a big deal.
[748]
It doesn't take very long.
[749]
And along with that, we do a weekly weigh in.
[751]
We got that term from The Biggest Loser,
[754]
where every week they do their work,
[756]
they do what they need to do,
[756]
and then once a week,
[758]
they go with their trainers,
[759]
and they stand on the scale and see how they did.
[761]
You got to know how you did.
[762]
In my budget planner,
[763]
I actually have a weekly weigh in page every single week.
[768]
Let's chat about wins for the week.
[770]
Family expenses and budgets.
[772]
How did your budget go?
[773]
How did my budget go?
[774]
Ask yourself those questions.
[776]
Report on how your own budget went.
[778]
The more often you talk about money,
[781]
the more often you look at your real numbers,
[783]
the less scary it is,
[785]
and the more on track you're going to be,
[787]
and the more on the same page you are.
[788]
Last but not least,
[790]
and probably the most important tip of all,
[793]
is give yourself some spending money.
[796]
For goodness sakes.
[797]
There's a difference between saying, "I need to lose weight.
[800]
"I am never going to eat sugar again,
[802]
"for as long as I live,"
[803]
and, "I need to lose weight,
[804]
"so I'm going to eat healthier.
[806]
"So I'm going to allow myself
[807]
"one treat every day after dinner,
[810]
"as long as I eat it before 7:00 PM."
[812]
What is the difference?
[812]
The difference there is moderation
[815]
and a realistic expectation.
[817]
If you came to me and said,
[818]
"You cannot spend money for the next six months,"
[820]
I would say, "Yeah, right."
[822]
But if you came to me and you said,
[824]
"Look, you have $15 a week to spend on whatever you want,"
[827]
then I would say,
[828]
"Oh, okay, what can I get for $15 this week?"
[830]
And then guess what?
[831]
Seven days later, I get 15 more dollars.
[834]
Or if there's something I want that $60,
[836]
I just need wait a couple of weeks,
[837]
and then I have plenty of money to buy it.
[839]
Do not set a budget,
[840]
and then spend money on the side being like,
[842]
"Oh, well this isn't part of the budget.
[844]
"I'll just spend it on the side."
[845]
It has to come from somewhere, guys,
[846]
and that's why this other budget is so important.
[850]
The more responsible you are,
[852]
the more money you have for things
[854]
you want to spend money on.
[855]
If you love, love going to the movies,
[858]
then work it into your budget.
[859]
Otherwise, what's going to keep you motivated?
[861]
If you work spending into your budget,
[863]
you'll never go over budget again,
[865]
keeping in mind that if you have credit card debt,
[868]
you really do need to stop spending on frivolous things.
[871]
I am going to say that,
[871]
that you really do need to put every dime
[874]
and just get those credit cards paid off.
[876]
They are costing you money every single day.
[878]
It is keeping you from that family vacation.
[880]
It is keeping you from that new car,
[881]
so just hit it hard.
[883]
You can do it.
[884]
I know you can.
[885]
Those are my five simple ways to
[887]
never go over budgeting again.
[889]
And I know we covered a lot,
[890]
and check out all other videos for tons more budgeting
[892]
and lifestyle tips like this,
[893]
and I will talk to you guys later.
[896]
Bye!
[898]
You can have a hair cutting envelope,
[899]
and a babysitting envelope,
[901]
and a dog food envelope,
[902]
and a fake plant envelope, and a snowplow envelope,
[904]
and you can have a budget for groceries,
[905]
and budget for eating out, and a budget for stereos,
[906]
and a budget for old ladies' clothes.
