so what do we got here we have notes from聽 the republic and the government of texas聽聽
[4]
all right that is pretty cool that's pretty聽 amazing most people in texas believe they live聽聽
[8]
in a separate country already and it'd be really聽 cool to have their own money too absolutely i came聽聽
[14]
to the pawn shop today to sell a set of republic聽 of texas and a government of texas note this is聽聽
[20]
the real currency that they used back in the 1830s聽 and 40s the reason i'm trying to sell the notes聽聽
[25]
is the business that i own has invested in them聽 it's time to refund the business so we have nine聽聽
[32]
republic of texas bills and this one that says聽 government of texas we have sam houston right here聽聽
[38]
he was president most people don't know that聽 he was indeed it just wasn't of the united聽聽
[43]
states it was uh the republic of texas absolutely聽 texas was part of mexico there was a revolution聽聽
[50]
they declared their sovereignty it was his own聽 country and then the united states government sort聽聽
[55]
of annexed texas saying you're part of the united聽 states the people in texas really didn't dig that聽聽
[61]
texas has a wild history native groups like the聽 comanches were fighting in that area for over a聽聽
[66]
thousand years and when european explorers showed聽 up in the early 1500s the fighting just got worse聽聽
[72]
finally texas declared itself independent from聽 mexico and was its own country for nine years聽聽
[77]
before the u.s government annexed texas in 1845聽 so tell me what you know about the bills the notes聽聽
[84]
were produced between 1838 and 1840 finest聽 set of notes known to exist all the notes聽聽
[90]
have been authenticated and graded so there's no聽 question as to their authenticity or the quality聽聽
[96]
not only are these bills old and rare they've聽 already been authenticated and graded and they're聽聽
[100]
in great condition i can definitely sell these and聽 make a profit if the guy will let them go at the聽聽
[105]
right price so what were you looking to do with聽 the mall sell them okay and how much did you want聽聽
[110]
for them the nine notes of the republic of texas聽 approximately 25 000 and then for the government聽聽
[117]
of texas note 650 000 650 1000. oh really um聽 why would you think this bill was worth so much聽聽
[130]
that's the rarest of all of them it's the only聽 known uncirculated specimen graded the next聽聽
[136]
highest note is au 58 which is about uncirculated聽 okay ed do you know how much that one sold for聽聽
[141]
uh i still own it okay all right so um we have聽 nothing to compare the price to not a thing聽聽
[148]
do you mind if i call someone and try and聽 figure out this price here i think that would聽聽
[151]
be a good idea 650 grand is more than i've聽 ever spent on anything coming in the shop聽聽
[156]
so there's no way i'm gonna shell out that kind of聽 money until i have someone look at it who knows it聽聽
[160]
could be worth every penny hi guys jay how's it聽 going man what's going on jay the guys call me聽聽
[167]
in when they have a piece of currency that they uh聽 need more expertise the guy's got a lot of stuff聽聽
[174]
here from the republic of texas and one from the聽 government of texas looks like a nice collection聽聽
[179]
these notes are part of a very colorful history聽 they're fascinating they're scarce and they come聽聽
[184]
up at auction usually in lower grades early texas聽 notes can can be very rare and like anything else聽聽
[191]
it depends strictly on condition this gentleman聽 might have something real valuable here聽聽
[196]
what we asking for this group in聽 the neighborhood of about 25 000.聽聽
[200]
uh with a 500 bill which you very rarely see so聽 you're evaluating this at around 10 000 at least聽聽
[207]
yeah and these you're evaluating at about 700聽 to a thousand each how about that in my opinion聽聽
[216]
the retail value on these would be three to six聽 hundred dollars each okay on the 500 i would say聽聽
[226]
a couple of thousand in an auction聽 it could go for more but not 10 000.
[233]
not even close now this is quite a bill this聽 government of texas ten dollar i believe this聽聽
[240]
is the highest grade they've ever issued for聽 this this is this is very different from the聽聽
[246]
rest of these i think it's in fabulous condition聽 what were you asking for this bill 650 000. yeah
[257]
actually
[261]
that's not even in the ballpark that's over聽 the moon over the planets over the stars聽聽
[267]
has anyone offered you a quarter of that uh i've聽 turned down that offer well have you saved their聽聽
[273]
phone number absolutely you better run and take聽 it before they change their mind i would put a聽聽
[279]
much lower value on this okay in my opinion the聽 ten dollar sam houston note would retail for
[291]
five to seven thousand dollars and on a聽 great day at a great auction ten thousand聽聽
[299]
i paid more than that i've looked up the聽 auction records to know where they trade聽聽
[302]
this note of course has never been seen before聽 well unlike it but it's still a limited number of聽聽
[308]
collectors it's not like 20 gold pieces it's not聽 like silver dollars that have millions of people聽聽
[313]
that are interested absolutely this is a small聽 universe of collectors maybe a few thousand real聽聽
[319]
serious collectors so the fact that something聽 is the finest known is great but that doesn't聽聽
[325]
necessarily mean it's worth a fortune of money聽 most people don't have a clue what it's worth聽聽
[333]
um you're on your own i've given you my opinion聽 okay it's a free country and people can ask聽聽
[340]
whatever they want i have to give my opinion based聽 on what i consider the real world the real market聽聽
[347]
obviously we're really far apart you聽 know my guy says 6 500 you're saying 650聽聽
[352]
000 so i appreciate you bringing in an expert聽 but obviously this is so rare he just doesn't聽聽
[357]
normally deal with it and if i could buy notes聽 at his prices retail i'd probably buy him out聽聽
[362]
jay's my guy i got to listen to him i've never had聽 any deal that far apart before on prices but uh聽聽
[368]
just more research and more time is probably what聽 we needed obviously a deal's not going to be made聽聽
[373]
here today just a difference of opinion happens聽 all the time absolutely no hard feelings no hard聽聽
[378]
feelings all right certainly he doesn't know聽 enough about the republic or the government of聽聽
[382]
texas to give an accurate number this man just聽 doesn't have a clue what he's talking about
[398]
you
