[9]
the end of this video What is going on everyone? Have you been
[13]
looking at craigslist or apartments.com for cheaper rent in your city and can't
[17]
find it? there are about 45 million Americans who
[19]
rent their living space and it is estimated that over half
[23]
believe they're being charged too much this of course leads to most renters
[27]
always on the hunt for cheaper accommodations
[29]
i used to do it all the time i had a lot of relationships that ended poorly and i
[33]
figured it was better to move than have someone
[36]
show up at my door with a crowbar or something like that and i always look
[39]
for cheaper rent today we're going to list
[41]
10 of the cheapest cities for renters these cities
[45]
will be decent cities i'm sure you could find cheaper rent in detroit or east st
[48]
louis but that's unhealthy the list will be on the
[50]
most popular rental unit which is a one-bedroom apartment and that'll kind
[54]
of give you an idea what all the other options are like in
[57]
whatever city we're talking about alright let's see what we found number
[61]
10 huntsville texas that's right i said texas not alabama
[65]
get to that in a second just about an hour north of houston you
[68]
have a nice small city called huntsville with a population of about 40 000
[73]
residents this place has decent stats across the board cost of living is 22
[76]
percent lower than the national average and housing is 11
[79]
lower the city started off in 1836 as a trading post the owners of the trading
[84]
post named it after their hometown huntsville alabama it's kind of how
[88]
portland became portland oregon the guy that started the trading post here
[91]
was from portland maine huntsville became the home of
[94]
sam houston legendary politician and everything else
[98]
he served as the president of the republic of texas governor of the state
[101]
of texas governor of tennessee and u.s senator and tennessee
[105]
congressman he died here in 1863 at the age of 70. now as far as rent
[110]
goes in the first quarter of 2020 a one bedroom averaged
[115]
779 dollars a month not bad especially for a place that's
[119]
got decent stats number nine shawnee kansas shawnee is a
[124]
suburb of kansas city with around 65 000 residents
[128]
kansas city has some not so great areas just like all cities
[132]
but statistically and from the looks of it shawnee isn't one of those bad
[136]
neighborhoods this is a nice city crime is around 27
[139]
percent lower than the national average and the schools are solid with a high
[142]
school graduation rate that's 11 percent higher than the national
[146]
average money magazine has an annual best places to live survey in 2010
[151]
shawnee was 17th in the nation that's pretty good
[154]
shawnee was ranked so high because of its affordable housing air quality index
[158]
and average commute time it's really a great place to live there's also a man
[162]
in shawnee named howard he wrote me a lengthy
[165]
handwritten letter protesting my video about kansas i did a couple years ago
[169]
this was a five page letter where he spent two
[171]
paragraphs telling me how wrong i was saying kansas is boring i kid you not
[176]
the next four and a half pages were insults and ideas of how i should f
[180]
myself normally when someone says that to you
[182]
that's the end of the conversation howard didn't follow that rule
[185]
howard went into great detail i mean really detailed
[189]
on what i should do to myself my response was
[193]
howard you just proved my point you spent god knows how long writing this
[197]
letter and visualizing me with a dozen or so fruits and vegetables
[201]
kansas is boring howard i sent that letter back to him actually it was a
[204]
postcard from portland oregon said wish you were
[207]
here it was fabulous anyway shawnee is a nice place to stay live
[212]
rent whatever you're gonna do the rent's only 760 a month here for one bedroom
[216]
apartment number eight midland michigan midland is
[219]
about an hour away from flint michigan and about two hours away from detroit so
[224]
you have like a buffer of all the michigan suckage right there
[227]
that is a ton of suckage also if they gave out awards for cities
[231]
being in bad shape detroit and flint would both be in the top five and
[235]
they're so close to each other that's just
[237]
how does that happen i know how it happens but yeah it's weird anyway
[241]
it's hard to believe that a city so close to either those two gems could be
[244]
nice but midland pulls it off midland's crime
[247]
rate is 62 percent lower than the national average
[250]
and their cost of living is 10 lower at 62 percent
[253]
lower crime rate that's amazing because detroit is like 340 percent higher
[257]
than the national average two hours away incredible if you don't mind harsh
[261]
winters and falls can get a little chilly too
[263]
this is a great place to live one thing i will add to that their summers are
[266]
amazing a michigan summer outside of detroit and flint is a great
[270]
summer the average rent in midland is 710 a month
[274]
for a one-bedroom apartment number seven derby kansas derby kansas is a small
[280]
city south of wichita it's got about 25 000 residents in 1903
[284]
the city was incorporated but at the time they used the name
[287]
el paso for some reason city kind of remained a farming community for a long
[291]
time after world war ii it started to pick up
[293]
some steam sometime around then they changed the name to derby kansas
[297]
this is a great place to live the crime is 12 percent lower than the
[300]
national average and schools have a graduation rate that's about 12 percent
[304]
higher than the national average cost living is about seven percent lower
[308]
than the national average i like the wichita area and it's like a
[311]
suburb of it sort of it's a nice place the average rent here is 687 dollars a
[317]
month for a one bedroom apartment number six wisconsin rapids wisconsin
[322]
in the center of wisconsin on the wisconsin river you have 20 000 people
[326]
that make up the city of wisconsin rapids now this wasn't always the name
[330]
in 1900 there were two cities there and they decided to merge they were split by
[334]
the wisconsin river on the west side it was incorporated as
[336]
centralia and on the east side it was grand rapids the two cities merged in
[341]
1900 and the entire community taking the name of grand rapids
[345]
well the name was changed in 1920 because they were afraid
[349]
that mail and other goods were being misdirected to the more popular
[353]
grand rapids michigan and they didn't want anyone confused you know they end
[357]
up in grand rapids wisconsin they thought they were going to michigan
[360]
you know just in case they don't own a map or a globe
[363]
or a compass or anything like that so they changed the name to wisconsin
[366]
rapids and they lived happily ever after but
[369]
not so much this is a great community the crime isn't the best
[372]
it's actually 27 higher than the national average like i said before
[376]
detroit's like 340 higher so this is really not that bad
[380]
housing is 54 percent lower and the cost of living is six percent lower than the
[384]
national average the schools ain't too shabby either
[386]
their graduation rate is about 12 percent higher than the national average
[389]
and here's where they shine the average rent for a one-bedroom
[392]
apartment in wisconsin rapids is only 630 dollars
[396]
not bad number five sierra vista arizona sierra vista is a small city in the
[401]
middle of the arizona desert it sits right outside the main gate of
[405]
the us army's fort huachuca this is an army post you end up going to
[409]
if you join military intelligence and please
[412]
stop typing nobody wants to hear the old worn out joke about
[415]
military intelligence being an oxymoron like jumbo shrimp
[419]
i think gallagher or george carlin said that in the 70s let it go
[423]
sierra vista is a nice place to live if you don't mind the heat and they get a
[427]
lot of it crime is 10 higher here but everything
[430]
else is solid including the rent which is only 602 dollars
[434]
a month on average for a one-bedroom apartment not bad
[437]
at all now if you do move here make sure you don't take fry boulevard
[442]
too far west because you're gonna run into guys in a little hut and they're
[445]
gonna make you turn around and they're gonna look at you sternly
[447]
but really they're not that bad they just tell you turn around it's not a big
[450]
deal if it's still the same it's paying the
[452]
butt to turn around there anyway moving on
[455]
number four niles ohio sandwiched between warren and youngstown ohio you
[459]
have the city of niles ohio and it's 19 000 residents one of those residents was
[463]
president william mckinley yeah this is his birthplace
[466]
niles is a great town and sadly it's losing people good news about that is
[470]
though prices are dropping rent housing
[472]
everything cost of living it's all going down
[474]
i've never been to niles but looking at it through street view
[478]
i found something amazing sidewalks are kind of tore up like the city's not
[482]
putting in new sidewalks or anything like that so that looks bad but if you
[486]
look at the homes the homes look like they're well
[488]
maintained like the people still care about this city
[491]
it's it's kind of an interesting thing i've been doing a little extra reading
[494]
about this one all the stats are really good here
[497]
except for jobs that's where they're kind of suffering
[499]
they don't have the best you know employment numbers they're actually 14
[503]
higher than the national average but they're still maintaining low crime
[506]
you know i mean six percent higher than the national average cost of living
[510]
is 16 percent lower than the national average so
[513]
nothing terrible the schools are great they have a 14
[516]
higher than average graduation rate nozzle ohio is a nice place to live
[521]
and it's just cheap it's really neat and here's where nile stands out
[525]
rent is only 579 dollars a month for a one-bedroom apartment
[530]
that's great number three conway arkansas north of
[534]
little rock near bend in the arkansas river you have the city of conway
[537]
arkansas if you watch this channel enough you
[540]
know i spent a lot of time roasting arkansas you might be wondering why
[543]
the answer is because the place sucks not all of it though like i've said
[546]
before the northwest corner with rogers
[548]
springdale and fayetteville that's the best part of the
[551]
state they've got jobs there they've got good people education
[554]
things are going good in the northwest corner most of the rest of the state
[557]
kind of blows conway is decent their crime is up there
[562]
but most everything else including schools their graduation rates 10
[565]
higher their cost of living is 20 lower than the national
[569]
average their housing is 15 percent lower
[573]
it's not a bad place other than the crime the thing that gets them on this
[576]
list though is rent is 570 a month for one bedroom
[581]
not bad conway number two greenville texas about an hour northwest of dallas
[586]
you have greenville texas and it's 30 000
[589]
residents this city has been growing since the
[591]
1890 census they've never had a reduction in population
[595]
so their rent isn't low because people are flooding out of this place which is
[598]
you know normally what happens the only knock against greenville is the
[602]
unemployment it's 30 higher than the national average that's
[605]
2019 numbers it was 6.2 percent which is pretty high
[609]
probably much worse right now with all the chaos of 2020 but that's the only
[612]
knock if you're moving there and you got a job you work remotely
[615]
this place is ideal especially when you figure in the cost of living is 25
[620]
lower than the national average and rent for one bedroom apartment
[623]
is 530 dollars and number one fort smith arkansas just
[629]
south of that nice part of arkansas i've been talking about
[632]
is fort smith this town has some history and some really cheap rent
[636]
most of the stats well they're not the best actually they suck they're really
[640]
bad not crazy bad but they suck this is a
[643]
good place to move if you're looking to save a lot of money
[646]
and you're bringing a job with you and no kids
[648]
don't bring kids here their schools are horrible but the cost of living here is
[652]
25 percent lower than the national average
[654]
and rent for a one-bedroom apartment is 460 dollars a month if you're living
[659]
there and you think that's expensive never go
[662]
to los angeles san francisco new york miami because you'll see rent there and
[666]
you will cry yourself to sleep at night fort smith is the cheapest place in the
[670]
country to pay rent that isn't you know downtown detroit
[673]
where you're living in a van or something like that
[678]
all right that is today's list i hope you guys enjoyed it hope you got some
[681]
information out of it don't forget to give the video a big thumbs up if you
