amazing well we have so many great

off and just start off learning a little

bit more about

what you do know now in your role as the

corporate doula
[74]
and then a little bit about your career
[76]
up to this point your
[77]
your time in the benefits space sure as
[80]
the corporate doula
[81]
i kind of drive in two lanes uh the
[84]
first lane is to help
[85]
the employees or individuals themselves
[87]
and that's in a traditional doula
[89]
standpoint i'm there for you advocating
[92]
rubbing your bag
[92]
saying helpful things uh teaching
[95]
childbirth education classes to you
[98]
but i also help you navigate your
[100]
benefits um
[101]
as you work so that it can be anything
[104]
from
[105]
benefits that allow you to leave work
[107]
when you're if you know on bed rest
[109]
um how you come back and how you
[112]
maintain your pay so
[113]
what does short-term disability mean for
[115]
you versus any state or federal leaves
[118]
like fmla
[120]
and the other lane i travel is to help
[122]
the employers directly
[124]
because of uh me formerly wearing a hat
[127]
in benefits for so many years
[129]
lastly as a benefits manager i've sat in
[131]
their seats so
[133]
i can help them from two perspectives
[135]
from that person that helps their
[137]
employees
[138]
but then that person who knows the
[141]
budget considerations and all the red
[143]
tape that they have to go through
[145]
to help them make very strong decisions
[148]
to strengthen
[149]
the family benefit options and packages
[152]
that they give their employees who work
[153]
so very hard for them
[156]
that's amazing that's amazing work that
[158]
you do i know that
[159]
it's such an exciting but also stressful
[162]
time for families when they're welcoming
[164]
a new member into their family so it's
[166]
so empowering that you help them
[168]
through that time in so many different
[170]
capacities

amazing well i'd love to dive a little
[173]
bit more into the money topic
[175]
i know that it can be a taboo topic for
[178]
for people to talk about
[179]
but um in your work working with both
[182]
you know families and the employers why
[184]
is it that employees and employers
[185]
should talk
[186]
about money more openly in the workplace
[188]
in your in your opinion
[190]
i mean we work for two things for
[193]
outside of
[193]
personal fulfillment we work for
[196]
compensation and we work for benefits
[198]
and so money kind of is the thread that
[202]
goes through
[202]
all of that um and so i think we're no
[205]
longer in a society
[207]
like maybe our grandparents used to work
[209]
30 40 years somewhere
[210]
and have like a pension that they knew
[212]
was they were gonna get
[214]
um so i think if you think about company
[216]
culture
[217]
to take on a persona that persona is
[220]
probably gonna have some
[221]
responsibilities and
[222]
you know some moral responsibilities and
[224]
some ethical responsibilities and
[226]
that is one of them you know someone has
[228]
devoted their time and attention
[230]
uh to make your product your service
[232]
grow for the time that they were with
[233]
you
[234]
how can you invest in them and so i feel
[237]
that
[238]
money is you know a necessary topic
[241]
as someone travels through their career
[243]
on their way to retirement
[246]
absolutely and i love that point about
[248]
those companies
[249]
investing in their employees as a return
[251]
for them putting so much time in i love
[253]
that perspective
[255]
and then pivoting a little bit more to
[256]
your role working directly with families
[258]
i'm curious what your thoughts on
[260]
are on how couples should talk about
[262]
finance as they're preparing to start
[263]
their family and welcome someone new
[265]
into their family oh just like anything
[267]
else to start a family as a decision
[270]
i will say their financial quote-unquote
[272]
requirements behind that but it's not
[274]
really it's considerations
[275]
is a better word financial
[277]
considerations um
[278]
that they have to now put on the table
[280]
when deciding to grow their family so
[282]
what does that mean
[283]
what does each partner uh bring to the
[286]
table in terms of finances what are the
[288]
expectations
[289]
um because you definitely don't want to
[292]
start to hash that out in the midst of
[294]
new baby stress
[295]
or in the mid-stress trying to start a
[298]
family
[299]
um so it's just better to get it out the
[301]
way as soon as possible and make room
[304]
for adjustments and you know for me if
[307]
they're working with me
[308]
you know use what your employer has
[311]
available to you
[313]
uh to the best uh you know to the
[315]
highest utilization
[316]
so that you can get what they have given
[318]
you to
[319]
to assist you in this transitional time
[322]
in your life
[324]
right yeah definitely and kind of a
[327]
follow-up question to that
[328]
as being in the the benefits world and
[331]
your work with families and women
[332]
preparing to welcome a baby into the
[334]
family
[335]
what's maybe the smartest financial
[337]
decision you see people making or
[339]
benefits decisions you
[340]
see people making during this stage of
[342]
life is it that
[343]
um you know thinking ahead and having
[345]
those conversations early on or are
[346]
there any other
[347]
things that really contribute to success
[349]
there
[350]
for the individuals i would definitely
[353]
say
[354]
you hit the nail on the head thinking
[355]
ahead so what does that mean
[357]
um what's available benefits that you
[359]
didn't think about before like what's a
[361]

or why do i personally need an ira like

i don't
[366]
is it bad luck to think about child life
[368]
insurance it's
[370]
not get it um
[373]
you know because you know pregnancy
[376]
birth brings life and sometimes death
[380]
you know it's a reality for either the
[382]
birther
[383]
or you know that new baby it happens
[386]
it's not just a good
[387]
and with the employers i think the best
[391]
thing they
[392]
can do is not think of their uh shop
[395]
as a one-stop shop there's no silver
[397]
bullet for all of their
[399]
family forming employees or family
[402]
sustaining
[403]
employees so having something even if
[406]
it's just a little something
[408]
for everyone along the way in their
[410]
journey as according to their
[412]
demographics you know so
[413]
right people are trying to start uh
[416]
families
[417]
having fertility-based benefits are
[419]
awesome
[420]
if they're you know they're in the midst
[422]
of having families it's great for them
[424]
to have
[425]
family-centric benefits to pull from um
[427]
and then
[428]
there is the postpartum you know and
[430]
then if there is loss what is that so
[433]
we're just coming off of the heels of
[434]
new zealand um granting bereavement
[437]
benefits for miscarriages
[439]
that's fantastic right but that's on a
[441]
government
[442]
level that doesn't stop acme
[445]
incorporated in the united states for
[446]
making that decision
[448]
on their own not waiting for it to be a
[450]
federal
[451]
type decision so that's what i mean
[453]
about looking through the whole
[454]
continuum of family forming
[457]
and family sustaining at work
[461]
amazing yeah there's so many different
[463]
touch points that you have to think
[464]
about when both
[465]
returning for work and preparing for
[467]
that that moment in your life so
[470]
love that perspective um so now shifting
[473]
gears a little bit more into
[474]
your your time in the benefits space
[476]
what's maybe
[477]
the coolest or most impactful benefit
[479]
that you've seen a company offer and
[481]
and why does that why is that benefit
[483]
the best or are the most impactful for
[485]
their employees
[486]
there's no way i can choose one
[488]
impactful benefit
[490]
because like we just talked about
[491]
there's so many different
[494]
right points you know there's so many
[496]
stages
[497]
and so you see certain things
[500]
really come through in the nick of time
[502]
for someone and it's
[504]
so um fulfilling
[507]
as you know in my benefits manager role
[510]
to see that
[511]
wow we had something in place that came
[513]
through
[514]
for one of our employees and let me tell
[518]
you
[518]
employers out here let me have a moment
[520]
with you hello
[522]
um that moment builds loyalty that you
[526]
could
[526]
never buy that moment
[530]
um puts your name out there
[533]
in the workforce as as a company that
[536]
cares whether that employee stays with
[538]
you or not
[539]
you you were thoughtful enough in your
[540]
benefits to have something
[542]
already in place no special needs
[544]
requests you know need to be submitted
[546]
that that's the most awesome when you
[548]
have something when you've studied your
[549]
demographic
[551]
and you have met them where they are
[553]
whatever that looks like that's the
[555]
sweet spot
[557]
yeah that's amazing and it must make
[559]
employees feel so special when they feel
[561]
heard
[562]
by their employer as well absolutely
[564]
absolutely
[566]
yeah amazing um so now thinking a little
[570]
bit you know
[570]
people enter the workforce every year
[573]
this
[574]
this year and last year specifically
[575]
have been a struggle for many new people
[577]
entering the workforce so
[579]
what advice or guidance do you have for
[582]
aspiring benefits and workplace
[584]
well-being professionals who are
[586]
looking to just kick-start their career
[588]
sometime soon
[590]
i would say be as well-rounded as you
[593]
can
[594]
so for me the reason why i'm comfortable
[597]
having
[598]
you know when people think about
[599]
benefits they think about you know
[601]
medical
[602]
dental vision um you know those things
[605]
that we use all the time
[607]
that's in front of our faces as benefits
[609]
more health related
[610]
but because of how i grew up in the
[614]
benefits worlds
[615]
um it included the money part of it to
[617]
me and i can clearly see
[619]
the bridges between financial benefits
[622]
financial based benefits leave based
[625]
benefits
[626]
to health based benefits it is all
[628]
interwoven
[629]
and so very important um i call them
[632]
close cousins
[633]
and so when you uh make sure that you
[637]
are well-rounded you will create plans
[639]
for your
[640]
uh employee base that is well-rounded as
[643]
well there's no sense in having the best
[645]
health plan
[646]
and not only does no one have a great
[650]
opportunity for
[651]
a match in their 401k or um
[655]
repayment for their uh student loans but
[658]
they worse than that i believe is that
[660]
they don't know it exists
[662]
so you have it and your communications
[664]
um is poor
[665]
so they don't know that it exists and to
[668]
take advantage of it
[669]
so that that's the worst so be
[672]
well-rounded
[673]
and then produce a well-rounded um
[676]
product and lobby for it like even if
[679]
you get
[679]
some pushback fight hard give the
[681]
reasons why the dad is out there
[684]
yep absolutely and i love that piece
[686]
that you said about communication that's
[688]
so
[689]
key when it comes to benefits so having
[691]
those communication skills you know
[693]
is so valuable and thinking of new ways
[695]
to get it get it out there to your
[697]
workforce so
[698]
definitely a really important aspect um
[701]
amazing my last question

um and then hopefully you can do some
[704]
rapid fire fun questions is about
[706]
burnout because i know it's something
[708]
that
[708]
so many people are experiencing right
[710]
now um it's so real so i want to know
[713]
what keeps you motivated through these
[715]
strange
[716]
tough times this uncertainty and what
[718]
guidance do you have to offer others who
[720]
might be feeling
[721]
burnt out either as a result of their
[723]
job or just being home all the time
[725]
during these times i would say
[729]
find your why and then factor yourself
[732]
into the why
[733]
so for me my why are those families
[736]
you know those individual families that
[738]
i help but then also the families that i
[740]
help by helping their employers
[742]
um it's just so rewarding to know that
[745]
i'm
[746]
that's my way of supporting people and
[748]
it
[749]
it just feeds me um but then i also have
[752]
to make
[752]
time and space and room for just
[755]
average ill you know what does averagely
[757]
do to replenish herself
[759]
what does average need to do to renew
[761]
herself
[762]
what does average need to do to refresh
[764]
herself
[765]
do those things um and that's what i i
[768]
have to do those things because i preach

it

i teach it so i have to live it because

if you're my client

whether that's an individual or employer

i am baking that in

to what is done so i have to be very

mindful to do it for myself

yeah i love that and just to just to say

i feel your energy and everything even

just over

zoom so that definitely comes through

that you're

you're feeding yourself and taking the

time for yourself and

definitely makes me inspired to do the

same for myself so

um amazing well i think we have a few

question i have for you is retirement is

something that people think about you
[815]
know for so long and save for for so

long

um so what would be your dream

retirement um when you get to that point

i want to be able to work just because

i feel like it so i want to work these
[832]
three months
[833]
and then i'm out for the rest of the
[835]
year
[836]
um i'm a beach type of girl a warm
[840]
weather type of girls so i need a couple
[842]
houses
[843]
um that would facilitate that type of
[846]
life
[848]
yeah i'm i'm a daughter of two jamaican
[851]
immigrants
[852]
and so you know water and sand is just
[855]
what i do
[858]
that sounds like a dream right now i
[860]
have to say
[861]
um my next question is true or false
[865]
money can't buy happiness
[868]
that is so hard
[872]
okay so if i'm answering from the center
[876]
of
[876]
self um it can't it really can't
[879]
but having money and i think it's just
[883]
it's money
[884]
there's nothing like money that you've
[886]
worked hard for and by heart i don't
[888]
mean
[889]
like sweat and almost killed yourself
[891]
for it
[892]
i mean you worked smartly for it so
[895]
for those who are just starting off get
[898]
in the game
[899]
because the longer you're in the game
[900]
the more it has to give you at the end
[902]
so you know save invest
[905]
be wise um about it so that
[909]
money gives you options that's not
[912]
happiness money gives you
[914]
options and options are a glorious thing
[916]
to have
[918]
absolutely absolutely next question is

what's a secret talent that you have i
[924]
have no secret talents
[926]
i let the world know about my talents i
[928]
do not
[929]
hoard them for myself i would say that
[931]
my talent
[933]
is really connection and um
[936]
communication i love you
[939]
hear and learn um very complex things
[942]
and be able to break it down
[943]
for people um in a simple way that they
[946]
can understand and take with them
[948]
that oh that gets me fired up to be able
[951]
to do that and so
[952]
i do that um through my work in many
[956]
different ways you know in
[957]
in in my doula work but then in my kind
[960]
of consulting work
[961]
as well so my those are my talents and i
[965]
let them be known
[968]
i love that that should be a mantra for
[970]
for 2021 and moving forward don't
[973]
hide your hidden talents no more secret
[975]
talents

share them with the world exactly such a
[978]
good message

amazing so my last question who is one

woman

who has inspired you in your life or
[987]
career

there's definitely not just one so i'm
[991]
just gonna like

put my mom on the mantel and say like

you know she

at every stage of my life has been a
[998]
great example for me
[999]
but in business i would definitely have

to say

her name is barbara young um she was
[1007]
like this
[1008]
awesome lady
[1011]
at church when i was a young young
[1014]
girl she just had everything all
[1016]
together she owned like
[1018]
three insurance agencies like three
[1020]
state farms
[1021]
she drove a badass jaguar
[1024]
um and she was always
[1028]
dressed to the nine but sweet as can be
[1030]
and i just
[1031]
that was like my first example like wow
[1035]
look at a woman in business who just has
[1038]
it all together
[1039]
and is never never hesitates to share
[1043]
her
[1043]
knowledge to share her experience to
[1046]
share her pitfalls
[1047]
with young girls and young women
[1050]
who ask the knowledge was here for the
[1053]
taken
[1054]
and i just will never forget that it's
[1056]
what she said but it's also what she
[1057]
exuded
[1058]
um in business and i'm here talking
[1061]
about it
[1062]
like a gazillion years later she was
[1064]
like a boss back before i knew what that
[1067]
was
[1068]
i love that yeah own your own your
[1071]
success own your knowledge and share
[1072]
that with the world
[1074]
absolutely kind of like not sharing your
[1075]
hidden secrets put
[1077]
all of your accomplishments out there
[1078]
and all of your secrets out there to
[1080]
share

exactly it's for a reason little does
[1082]
she know her being a boss was there
[1084]
uh inspiring average old brookwood

for the rest of her life like she didn't

know just being her

so you just gotta be yourself and you
