[17]
Welcome to Rancho Oco!
[23]
Hi! I am Alexis, 41 years old.
[25]
I’m Johanna (Honey), 37 years old.
[28]
We acquired the property around October 2020.
[34]
We saw it through a post.
[38]
We went there.
[41]
It was a sugarcane field.
[42]
The area was not clear.
[44]
We made a downpayment.
[45]
And then we paid it in full in January 2021.
[49]
The first thing that we constructed in the property was a water well pump for the water source.
[54]
Construction started in February 2021.
[58]
The house was completed by the first week of May 2021.
[63]
It was fully furnished, including a mini pool, around September.
[69]
My inspiration was my childhood memories.
[73]
Back then, at our provincial house, our grandfather had a “bahay kubo” (nipa hut) built.
[80]
We spent most of our time there—just playing.
[84]
Family bondings developed there.
[87]
Although we have a house made of concrete, the bahay kubo became more memorable.
[93]
So I thought of doing it now with my kids.
[95]
It is also for our kids to experience living in the province and a bahay kubo.
[107]
At first, things felt different at this place.
[110]
We woke up early, around 4:30 to 5:30 AM
[114]
as there are many alarm clocks
[117]
—cows mooing,
[119]
birds humming,
[121]
chickens are crowing.
[123]
We take advantage of these.
[125]
We witness the sunrise and do gardening after.
[132]
These are the first experiences we had in our place.
[137]
This is our dining room.
[141]
This is where we eat,
[142]
hang out, feel the air.
[146]
This is our kitchen—where we cook our food.
[156]
This is our mini pool for the kids.
[159]
They can swim with the mountain view, or stargaze while swimming.
[165]
This is where they usually enjoy swimming.
[168]
The unique feature of this house for me is the bathroom.
[173]
It presents the modern touch of the bahay kubo.
[179]
This is my favorite spot during my “me time.”
[183]
When I am just in the bathtub, the plants are around, and I can do stargazing
[188]
—it is very relaxing.
[191]
Another unique feature of this house is the mini pool in front.
[198]
This is made for the kids since they like swimming.
[203]
Even if we're inside the house, we can see them.
[206]
So we feel secure that our kids will be safe.
[213]
Our favorite spot in the farm is the recreational activity area.
[221]
We can do a lot of things here.
[223]
One of our favorite activities is the bonfire.
[226]
It feels special to have a bonfire at night.
[229]
This is our bedroom with a queen-size bed
[233]
You can see the view outside,
[235]
the sunrise, and more.
[237]
You'll feel relaxed.
[242]
Mahogany is the primary material used in the house.
[245]
It is customized from our local supplier.
[249]
We used mahogany from the floor to the walls.
[254]
It is a bit pricey but worth it in the long run.
[257]
We invested our money in the use of mahogany.
[260]
We did the labor, such as floor sanding and wall varnishing.
[268]
I hope that the amateur work isn’t evident.
[271]
It is our DIY project which we like.
[275]
Our second room is loft-type.
[281]
You’ll have to get used to going up, but this is sturdy and safe.
[288]
We did not have any professional help,
[290]
such as an architect for the plan and costing.
[294]
We estimated the cost to be ₱500,000.
[299]
But as the construction progressed, we added other things we wanted.
[306]
The total cost is around ₱1,000,000
[309]
—including the mini pool, water system, and all furnishings.
[316]
For the design, my idea is traditional bahay kubo.
[321]
Then we incorporated the modern fixtures so it became an “upgraded modern bahay kubo”.
[330]
Upstairs, we have a double-size bed.
[332]
You can see the view outside.
[333]
There is also a balcony.
[341]
You can feel the wind in this area, and the kids can also play.
[345]
It is also safe and sturdy.
[348]
“Rancho Oco” is derived from our surname ‘Oco.’
[351]
We looked for a word that rhymes with Oco.
[353]
Our eldest daughter repeated, “Rancho Oco,” and so we decided to use this to name our property.
[362]
Rancho Oco also has a sense of ownership.
[367]
The floor area of the house is around 5.5 meters by 6 meters,
[373]
including the deck and dining area.
[377]
For the lot area, we initially had 1000 square meters.
[382]
Then we acquired a second property resulting in 2000 square meters.
[390]
We decided to make our place available for rent through Airbnb.
[393]
Our friends saw this place, asked to visit, and offered to rent.
[401]
We also want to share the experience of living in our bahay kubo, so we decided to lease our property.
[411]
It is also a source of additional income for us.
[415]
We also have another bahay kubo for our personal use.
[419]
When guests are here, they will have their privacy.
[423]
So, we have our villa.
[426]
An advice that we can give to others is to think thoroughly.
[431]
It does not mean when we see people moving out from Manila, building a property, and living in the province
[438]
we will be impulsive.
[440]
We have to be prepared emotionally and financially.
[443]
We have to know where to jump.
[446]
We have to test the waters first to have no regrets.
[451]
When you decide to do it, do it wholeheartedly.
[456]
Trust the process.
[457]
Along the way, there will be doubts.
[461]
Since we are inexperienced in building a house from scratch, doubts will arise.
[468]
I’m thankful for the support of my husband as he reassured me that we were doing well.
[475]
If you want something, you have to work on it to achieve it.
[479]
It is also our teamwork that led to this beautiful resort.
