Making $100,000/Year Online In PROFIT Selling Mugs (Case Study) w/ Print On Demand! - YouTube
Channel: Wholesale Ted
[0]
hey everyone so if you've been a
[1]
longtime subscriber on here you'll know
[3]
that my favorite product to sell to make
[4]
money online right now is t-shirts
[7]
however because of this favoritism it
[9]
means that i have been seriously
[11]
neglecting another awesome item that you
[13]
can sell to make money online
[15]
the classic mug yes as i've discussed
[18]
before on this channel mugs are a great
[19]
i miss our make money online because of
[22]
the fact that they are super popular
[23]
with customers
[24]
so i thought why not shake things up a
[26]
little bit around here and do a case
[28]
study of a print print-on-demand store
[29]
that is making over a hundred thousand
[31]
dollars a year
[32]
selling just two mugs but you know what
[35]
that's not all because do you know what
[37]
i love more than earning a hundred
[39]
thousand dollars
[40]
what i love more than earning a hundred
[42]
thousand dollars is any time that
[44]
someone takes a moment out their very
[45]
busy day
[46]
to give this video a like to subscribe
[48]
because seriously every time you hit
[50]
that like button it genuinely helps my
[52]
video with the youtube algorithm so
[53]
thank you so much to everybody that
[55]
takes a moment to do so
[56]
but yes something else that i love more
[59]
than earning a hundred thousand dollars
[61]
is earning a hundred thousand dollars in
[64]
profit
[65]
so yes do not worry these mugs i'm going
[67]
to show you they are not just earning a
[68]
hundred thousand dollars a year in
[70]
revenue
[71]
nope they are earning a hundred thousand
[73]
dollars a year in
[74]
profit and to show you how they are
[76]
doing that
[77]
something else i'm going to do in this
[78]
video is i am going to reverse engineer
[81]
this store yes the reverse engineering
[84]
i'm going to show you how if it was you
[86]
that had come up with these two mugs to
[88]
sell that you could have been making
[89]
over a hundred thousand dollars in
[91]
profit
[92]
even if you don't have an expensive heat
[94]
pressing machine to print mugs to resell
[96]
them
[96]
and even if you aren't a graphic
[98]
designer nope no design skills necessary
[101]
or heat mug pressing machine required my
[103]
hope is that by reverse engineering the
[105]
store i give you some inspiration for
[107]
ideas on mugs that you could start
[108]
selling online
[109]
right now so let's begin so
[113]
this is a mug one of two that is earning
[115]
over a hundred thousand dollars a year
[116]
in profit online
[118]
and as you can see it's pretty cute
[119]
isn't it it's a custom dog mug
[121]
and yes as i'll show you even if you
[123]
don't have a heat pressing machine or
[125]
even if you aren't a graphic artist if
[127]
you'd been the one to come up with this
[128]
mug idea
[129]
you could have listed it for sale and
[131]
made big profits too
[132]
so the price starts at 23 for an 11
[135]
ounce mug but you can pay more to get a
[137]
bigger mug
[138]
you can pay up to 35 dollars to get
[139]
multiple pictures of dogs on the mug
[142]
so for example if you had two dogs you
[144]
could pay extra to get a photo of one
[146]
dog on the front and you know
[147]
one dog on the back and as you can see
[149]
this mug has been listed for sale on
[151]
etsy and opening up your own store in
[153]
etsy like tightly priested here it's
[156]
free and as you can see they've listed
[157]
several items for sale on here
[159]
now etsy is pretty popular in the usa
[161]
and so a lot of americans will already
[163]
know about it
[164]
but it is not as popular elsewhere in
[167]
the world so if you're watching this
[169]
and you've never heard of etsy and you
[171]
don't know what it is
[172]
it's an online marketplace similar to
[174]
ebay you just register and start listing
[176]
products for sale on here
[177]
no website required so it's a beginner
[179]
friendly way to get started
[180]
and it's an extremely popular place to
[182]
sell mugs most mugs on here they are not
[185]
made by the sellers themselves
[186]
they use low-cost print-on-demand
[188]
services to sell their mugs on here
[190]
and the cool thing about etsy is because
[192]
they've spent millions of dollars on tv
[194]
ads in the usa
[195]
every month 300 million people come here
[198]
looking for products to buy so
[199]
as you'll see you don't need to
[201]
advertise the products that you list on
[202]
here for sale
[203]
most people who bought this mug they did
[205]
not buy this because they saw an
[207]
advertisement for it on facebook
[209]
instead most people bought it because
[210]
they came to etsy on their own
[212]
since they'd heard about it through word
[213]
of mouth or etsy's tv ads and then they
[215]
came to etsy search bar and typed in
[217]
something like dog mugs or
[218]
dog gifts and they found this mug so
[220]
most of the time etsy sellers don't have
[222]
advertising costs for the items they
[224]
sell
[224]
because they make their sales through
[226]
free search engine traffic
[228]
it makes it a budget-friendly
[229]
beginner-friendly way to start selling
[231]
items online
[232]
which is why i've had several
[233]
subscribers successfully start their
[235]
first stores on etsy
[236]
after watching my videos congratulations
[238]
everybody
[239]
so while i myself don't sell on etsy i
[242]
do use etsy for product research when
[244]
designing my t-shirts that i sell
[246]
well we can apply my research techniques
[248]
to mugs as well
[250]
the first thing i do when researching a
[251]
product on etsy as i estimate how much
[254]
money i think it's made
[255]
and i have a five step formula that i
[257]
use to do this step one i figure out how
[259]
many reviews has been left for an item
[261]
now
[261]
here is a pro tip for you if you are
[263]
doing product research on etsy
[265]
if you come to a product listing like
[266]
this and let's say it's got 200
[268]
views that is not accurate etsy will
[271]
only show the latest 200 product reviews
[273]
for an item on the product listing
[275]
so to figure out how many reviews this
[276]
item actually has you need to click on
[278]
their storefront
[279]
and then scroll down to the store's
[281]
total reviews and then go through all of
[283]
the reviews left for an item
[284]
now it was a little boring but i went
[286]
through all 247 pages of reviews for the
[289]
store
[290]
and i discovered two things firstly i
[292]
discovered
[293]
75 or more of the store's reviews were
[296]
left in the past 12 months
[298]
meaning the sales for the store were
[299]
mostly made in the past year
[301]
and secondly i counted 589 reviews
[304]
for this custom dog mug and then it's on
[307]
to step two where we need to figure out
[308]
how many reviews that the store
[310]
has had in total which is admittedly
[312]
very easy to find this information is
[314]
available literally on the product page
[316]
so this store has had 2 463
[320]
reviews well step 3 is calculating what
[322]
percentage of those reviews were for the
[325]
product
[325]
that i am researching so if i take the
[328]
total number of reviews for this mug
[329]
which is 589 and then divide that by the
[332]
total number of reviews that the store
[334]
has had
[335]
which is 2 463 we discover that reviews
[338]
for this month
[339]
make up roughly 24 of the total store
[342]
reviews
[343]
which means it's probably also making up
[345]
around 24
[347]
of the total sales for the store as well
[349]
so then we move on to step four
[350]
which is when you now take the store's
[352]
total sales number which as of now
[354]
is twenty thousand one hundred and
[356]
seventy nine and work out what twenty
[358]
four percent of that is
[359]
and as you can see it is four thousand
[361]
eight hundred and forty three sales
[363]
so then step five you now take your
[365]
sales number and times it by the average
[368]
product price
[368]
and we're going to go with a 25 price
[370]
point for this mug since it comes in a
[372]
variety of different price points and
[374]
the reviews show but a lot of people do
[376]
upgrade their mug and as you can see we
[378]
can estimate that this one mug has made
[380]
over 120 000 most of that within the
[383]
past year
[384]
so now that we've estimated how much
[386]
money this mug has made it's time to
[388]
figure out
[388]
how much of that money is profit now
[391]
while it is admittedly
[392]
impossible for me to figure out the
[394]
exact profit margins unless i look at
[396]
the profit loss sheet for the store
[398]
what i can instead do is reverse
[400]
engineer the store
[402]
and show you what your profit margins
[404]
would have been if you had been the one
[405]
to come up with this mug idea
[407]
and listed it for sale on etsy and use
[409]
low-cost print-on-demand services to do
[411]
so
[412]
because i do want to stress that i never
[414]
recommend that you come and copy
[415]
other people's products and i mean as
[417]
you can see others have already done so
[419]
so you know you'd just be joining this
[421]
competitive bloodbath of
[422]
other etsy sellers who have already
[424]
copied this idea so
[426]
instead what i recommend that you do is
[428]
you take a look at other people's
[429]
successful products and you use
[431]
these as an inspiration to come up with
[433]
your own products to sell
[434]
and actually speaking of that while
[437]
filming this video i came up with a
[438]
really cool product idea
[440]
that somebody could make and list for
[441]
sale on etsy so i'll talk about that
[443]
later in the video
[444]
but for now back to that whole reverse
[446]
engineering the store thing
[448]
i'm sure a lot of you were saying okay
[450]
sarah you say
[451]
that if i had come up with this mug idea
[453]
that i could have listed it for sale on
[455]
etsy
[456]
but have you seen how much it cost to
[457]
buy a heat printing machine
[459]
to make custom mugs and also sarah i
[462]
don't have 4
[463]
843 white mugs sitting around my house
[465]
waiting for me to print pictures onto it
[467]
to sell
[468]
i am confused well you see my friend
[470]
that is exactly why print on demand apps
[472]
exist like this one here
[474]
printer fight printf is one that i
[476]
personally use to create and sell
[477]
products online
[478]
printfire will make your customers mark
[480]
they'll ship it out to your customer for
[482]
you
[482]
and actually print a fine has lots of
[484]
other items that you can sell in an
[486]
online store not just mugs
[488]
using printify you can sell my favorite
[490]
product t-shirts but you can also
[492]
sell other things as well like face
[494]
masks hoodies
[495]
shower curtains pillowcases phone cases
[497]
all sorts of items
[498]
but yes to make a mug with printify you
[501]
just come and click start designing
[502]
and on here you'll be prompted to upload
[504]
a picture that you want printed
[506]
onto your mug and so of course what do
[508]
you do you upload a picture that
[510]
features the photo of the dog
[511]
that your customer submitted and the
[513]
dog's name printfire will then
[515]
store this design for you and your
[517]
database and once you've done that at
[519]
any point you can come and buy one of
[520]
these mugs
[521]
individually and printed fast factory
[523]
will literally print your design onto
[525]
the mug
[526]
and that is why the service is called
[528]
print on demand so
[529]
what you do is you get them to make one
[531]
of these mugs
[532]
and then you give them your customers
[534]
shipping address print if i charge you
[536]
five dollars and forty six cents per mug
[538]
with a printed five premium subscription
[539]
and six dollars to ship the mug and then
[542]
printfire's professional mug factory
[544]
spoke will print your picture onto that
[546]
one single individual mug that you
[548]
ordered and then they'll package it up
[549]
and they'll ship it out to the customer
[551]
when you add the cost of the mug five
[553]
dollars and forty six cents
[554]
with the cost to ship it six dollars
[556]
that means printe5 charges you
[558]
just eleven dollars and forty six cents
[560]
per mug that you buy
[562]
and by the way if you're enjoying this
[563]
video and you would like to learn even
[565]
more
[565]
about starting your own print-on-demand
[567]
store then you should be sure to
[568]
download my free ebook the six tips that
[570]
six figure online stores follow to make
[572]
over ten thousand dollars a month and
[573]
you'll find a link to download my free
[574]
ebook in the video description below
[576]
but anyway back to the video and as you
[579]
can see by using printfire's print on
[581]
demand service
[582]
you can sell products like mugs online
[584]
without having to make them
[586]
yourself and remember this store that
[589]
charging
[589]
23 dollars per mug plus if you use a
[593]
shipping calculator
[594]
and put in an american zip code like
[596]
90210
[598]
you'll see that they are charging extra
[599]
for shipping too an 11 ounce mug
[602]
has an additional 10.94 shipping charge
[606]
so
[606]
in total that is 33.94 that they are
[610]
charging
[610]
for each mug with shipping included
[613]
which anyone again
[614]
could have made and shipped out to the
[616]
customer using printify for just 11.46
[620]
but there is a part that i skipped out
[622]
here isn't there
[623]
remember how i uploaded this picture to
[625]
printify featuring my customers dog
[627]
picture that they uploaded and gave to
[629]
me
[629]
how did i do that well first of all i
[631]
came to printify and saw that okay they
[633]
have asked me to upload a rectangle
[635]
that is 2 700 pixels by 1119 pixels
[639]
and to place my customer's photo and
[641]
text on both the left side and the right
[643]
side so that
[644]
it will get printed on both the front
[646]
and back of the mic
[647]
okay that is easy enough to do so then i
[650]
came to this beginner friendly graphic
[651]
design app canva
[652]
you can get a free 30-day trial to canva
[654]
i have a link to that in the video
[655]
description below
[656]
as my subscribers know it's my favorite
[658]
graphic design app i use this to make
[660]
lots of products that i sell online
[662]
with print-on-demand services like
[663]
printfy so basically all i'm going to do
[666]
here is upload a picture
[667]
of my customer's dog face and then add
[669]
the text featuring their name
[670]
jamie above it and i'm also going to be
[673]
just doing this
[674]
by dragging and dropping text and
[675]
pictures around because i'm not a
[677]
graphic
[677]
artist and so to make pictures like this
[679]
i really do need a beginner-friendly
[681]
tool that
[682]
just lets me drag and drop elements
[683]
around so canva is perfect for that
[686]
and as you can imagine once you've
[687]
created this mug template once
[689]
it's very easy to just create a new one
[691]
when another customer orders a mug from
[693]
you
[694]
all you do is copy this template that
[696]
you've already made
[697]
and swap out the photo with your new
[699]
customer's photo
[700]
and then swap out the text with the name
[702]
of their dog so
[703]
once you've made this template once
[705]
creating new versions of it for
[706]
customers
[707]
it literally takes just one minute so
[709]
you just swap out the text and the
[710]
pictures with new ones and boom
[712]
you're done so now you might be looking
[713]
at this and thinking well okay sarah i
[715]
see that you've uploaded a picture of
[717]
your customer's dog
[718]
with the head nicely cut out from the
[720]
photo how did you do that well
[722]
the answer is that i didn't actually do
[724]
this removing a dog's head from an
[726]
image requires graphic editing skills
[728]
and i myself
[729]
am not a graphic artist and so if you're
[731]
like me and you are not a graphic artist
[733]
that is okay because
[735]
for a very small cost you can hire
[737]
someone else to do this for you
[738]
on fiverr so this fiverr gig will eat up
[740]
five photos for you for five dollars
[742]
plus a
[743]
and twenty five cent fiverr processing
[744]
fee so that's seven dollars and twenty
[746]
five cents in total
[747]
and they edited five photos for me so
[750]
once you divide seven dollars and twenty
[751]
five cents
[752]
between five photos it means that each
[754]
photo costs just a dollar forty five
[756]
cents
[757]
and if you want even more training about
[758]
how to use canva to create
[759]
print-on-demand designs
[761]
it's something i teach inside my premium
[762]
print on-demand training program
[764]
the ecom clubhouse to see if my course
[766]
is right for you i'll have a link to it
[768]
in the video description below
[770]
so then these are all the costs involved
[771]
when we reversely engineer this business
[773]
for ourselves
[774]
so let's now go plug them into an etsy
[775]
profit calculator to figure out our
[777]
profit margins
[779]
so our item price is 23 and our shipping
[781]
charge for the customer is 10.94
[784]
and our item cost is five dollars and
[786]
forty six cents for the mug
[787]
plus a dollar and forty five cent for
[789]
the graphic editor to edit the
[790]
customer's dog photo
[791]
so that's six dollars and ninety one
[793]
cents in total plus printed five charges
[795]
are six dollars to ship the mug
[797]
well whether our customer pays with
[799]
etsy's credit card processing system
[801]
with slightly cheaper fees
[803]
or paypal either way our profit margins
[805]
are over
[806]
50 percent but as i said at start the
[810]
video this is not the only mug design
[812]
that is earning the store big profits
[814]
nope they have
[815]
another one yep the seriously second mug
[818]
i counted over double the number of
[820]
reviews
[820]
compared to the custom dog mug which
[822]
means it's probably head over double the
[824]
amount of sales as well
[825]
it's more popular than the custom dog
[827]
mug and honestly i'm not surprised this
[829]
is an
[829]
awesome gift to give to grandparents or
[831]
aunts and uncles so
[832]
combined i estimate that these mugs have
[835]
sold around 270
[837]
000 in the past 12 months and when you
[839]
account for them
[840]
having a 50 profit margin it means that
[843]
if you had been the one
[844]
to sell this you'd have made over a
[846]
hundred thousand dollars in profit in
[848]
the past year
[849]
selling these two mugs so hopefully this
[852]
video has inspired you with some ideas
[854]
of mugs that you could create and sell
[856]
as i said at the start of the video i
[857]
myself
[858]
got inspired while i was making it
[860]
because you know what
[861]
there are all these mugs i don't see
[863]
that say things like best mother or
[865]
things like that you know that's fine no
[867]
but you know what
[868]
none of them feature custom photos so
[871]
you know what would be cool
[873]
a mug that lets you feature a photo of
[875]
you and
[876]
your mother so yes there are still tons
[878]
of great opportunities to use
[880]
personalization to design
[882]
your own unique mugs to sell so did you
[884]
learn something new if you did please
[886]
hit subscribe and click that little
[887]
notification bell so you don't miss out
[889]
on any of my videos
[890]
and as i said it started this video my
[892]
favorite item to sell online
[893]
is actually t-shirts and if you'd like
[895]
to learn more about how i do product
[897]
research to come up with awesome t-shirt
[898]
designs
[899]
then you should be sure to watch my
