[8]
- So I know you're in charge of culture
[10]
and leading that team at Corgan,
[12]
and obviously you know we
always talk about culture really
[15]
in our minds is built on the
core values of an organization.
[18]
And then so as you think
about this new normal
[22]
and people coming back and really
[24]
you know, elevating the cultures
[26]
as you go through these transformations
[28]
and talking to your clients
about really getting
[30]
the culture right, because
the last thing you wanna
[32]
is create a space that
suddenly loses the magic
[35]
of these organizations that
you've been a part of building.
[38]
So how do you think about culture
[40]
in the workspace of the future,
[42]
and this new norm that
we're going through?
[44]
- Sure. So first I'll talk
about how I think culture
[48]
at Corgan has evolved over
this shelter-in-place time.
[54]
We, our brand promise at
Corgan is agility in design.
[59]
That was really always an outward facing,
[62]
you know, that's what
we promise our clients,
[64]
that we will approach every design problem
[67]
with agility, and change, and you know,
[69]
not lose control during the process,
[71]
but always be adjusting.
[75]
It was interesting to
see how our employees
[77]
grabbed onto that thought of agility
[80]
when they were asked
to pick everything up,
[83]
go home, work in a
really collaborative way,
[87]
all individually from home,
[89]
and continue to support our clients,
[91]
to see people rally around agility.
[94]
So the hashtag, #Corganmakesitwork
[97]
just sprung up, you know, organically.
[101]
Which, was so cool
[103]
and that's just what people did.
[106]
And so, there was that
validating part of culture
[110]
where we saw it just kind
of continue to come to life,
[113]
and then what we did, I mean,
[115]
we really focused on our
communication from day one.
[118]
Put a team together,
[119]
What are you hearing?
[120]
What are people worried about?
[121]
What are we not answering?
[123]
And a dedicated kind of internal page,
[126]
as well as video messages,
[127]
we've just tried to be really responsive.
[129]
So, internally, it's been a mix
[132]
of organically the
culture expressing itself,
[135]
and then hard work around communications.
[139]
To our customers, I
would say, over the past,
[142]
the projects we've done
over the past ten years,
[145]
I still think a lot of the tenets
[148]
of those projects are still right on.
[151]
So, providing a lot of
variety in the space,
[153]
which is something you and
I talk about all the time,
[155]
that's gonna serve people really well.
[157]
So, we don't have that
many workplaces anymore
[161]
where there was just cubicles,
[162]
and offices, and conference rooms.
[164]
We've got all kinds of in between spaces
[167]
which now can be used differently,
[169]
can help in spreading people out.
[172]
You know, larger,
[174]
more spacious areas for work cafes,
[177]
where people can spread out and work.
[180]
So those things I think are really good.
[182]
Branding, and telling stories in spaces,
[185]
I think that's just gonna
help people feel connected
[187]
when they are in the work place.
[190]
So those two trends of
variety and storytelling,
[193]
I think are right on.
[194]
And the third one, we've
touched on already. Community.
[198]
So using the office to
encourage each other,
[201]
to tell employee stories,
[203]
to tell customer stories.
[206]
And have ownership of
kind of your culture,
[209]
I think is still right on.
[212]
How do you then balance that
with a virtual culture world?
[217]
Last thing I'll say on that,
[219]
we had quite a few
remote employees already.
[222]
Most of them were in other cities
[224]
where we don't have
significantly sized offices.
[227]
They have been hilarious to talk to
[229]
because they're like, this is the best!
[233]
- You're now in our shoes
[235]
- You're in our shoes.
[237]
They talked about everybody being equal.
[240]
So before, there'd be five
people in a conference in Dallas
[243]
one person on the video going "Hey! Hey!"
[247]
And then the equality that has
happened in this virtual world
[252]
where everybody kind
of has an equal voice.
[257]
So that's been an interesting difference
[260]
in culture that has come out of this.
