Crocheting a strap for a Mochila - YouTube
Channel: unknown

Hello welcome back.
[2]
Today I'm going to聽show you how you crochet a strap for the Mochila bag.
[7]
Here you see an example聽
of a strap I made a few years ago.
[13]
The strap is crocheted lengthwise, so you聽will have a very long chain to start with.
[19]
I already crocheted a few stitches.聽
I will show you how tight you need to chain.
[36]
It's very important that the chain聽stitches are tight, because if they are too loose,聽聽
[46]
the first round of the strap will be wavy and聽we don't want that.
[51]
When you have chained enough stitches, you just pull out the thread.
[58]
We will聽start in the first chain stitch,
[63]
because if you accidentally counted wrong and you have one too聽many or not enough,
[70]
then you can always add or remove a few chain stitches at the end.
[75]
So we聽will start with a new thread, make a slipknot.
[84]
My first round. I'm making a small example for聽the video because I'm not really using this strap.
[95]
So you insert the hook in the back loop,聽聽
[101]
take the carry threads and let them聽
hang out for about 10 to 15 centimeters.
[114]
You can braid them later.
[120]
Like I said the first stitches are聽a bit hard.
[127]
Then you just start crocheting, try to make the stitches聽
the same size as you did for the bag.
[150]
Trying to get the carry threads to be a聽
little bit smaller, two behind each other.
[164]
It takes a lot of time to聽make this first round, but
[171]
when you make the next rounds it will be easier.
[190]
When you crocheted a few stitches,
[196]
try to get all the carry threads nice and even
[206]
because you don't want to see them.
[210]
It kind of looks impossible.
[224]
You can push the stitches聽a bit close to each other.
[234]
Let's try some more.
[245]
Because the chain stitches聽are very tight, it is hard to聽get the hook in,
[249]
but that is really what you聽want, because you don't want a wavy strap.
[270]
I didn't get the whole stitch.
[288]
And again rearranging the carry threads.聽
You really have to do that more聽often with the strap.
[295]
It's really聽more difficult than the bag itself.
[305]
I will crochet some more聽off-camera and I will be right back.
[312]
I'm almost at the end of the row. I am聽
gonna do a few more stitches
[319]
and then rearrange the carry threads again.
[339]
The first row like I said really takes a lot of聽time,
[343]
but it's very important聽that it is nice and straight.
[359]
One more stitch.
[372]
And then you see that it's a bit round.
[376]
So I will pull the carry threads. I'm holding聽them at this end and then I'll聽聽
[384]
pull them one by one to make it all straight again.
[394]
So that's the end of the first聽round, now I can cut the yarn
[405]
and pull the loop.
[411]
That's the end of the first聽round.
[415]
Start the second round. Slip stitch again.
[427]
I have to get my carry threads聽ready.
Oh didn't cut them yet.
[448]
So slip stitch on the hook,
[454]
insert in the back loop,
[459]
get the carry threads in.
[466]
Then you start crocheting again.
[471]
So every row聽you start on the right with a slip stitch
[475]
and in the end you just pull the loop and that's聽the end of the round.
[484]
And the carry threads, you let them hang out in the beginning and聽in the end and you can braid them later.
[497]
My little sample strap is finished.
[501]
I started with 36 stitches, it is now 10 centimeters or聽4 inch.
[509]
So if you want to make a strap that is about 1 meter or 40 inch long, you will聽need about 360 stitches to start with.聽聽
[518]
Of course this can be different because everybody聽
crochets differently.
[523]
On both sides I made braids.
[529]
I made the braids with five strands
[532]
and聽only one braid on each side is made with six strands,
[535]
because you also have聽the begin and end yarn of the cast on.
[543]
So the strap, you crochet it lengthwise.
[548]
If聽you're right-handed, you start on the right side for every row and if you're left-handed聽you start on the left side for every row.
[559]
I hope this helps. Thank you for watching.
