5 Reasons to Avoid Accounting (as a Career) - YouTube
Channel: Accounting Stuff
[0]
I decided to be an accountant
when I was in my final year
[3]
at university studying physics
and I'll be honest
[7]
it wasn't my dream job as a kid.
[9]
First I wanted to be an inventor.
[12]
But as the years passed
I changed my mind a lot.
[16]
Maybe I should be an engineer
maybe I should join the army
[19]
what about physics?
[21]
In the end I settled on accounting.
[23]
I mention this because I
think I'm not alone
[25]
a lot of us have a hard time deciding
what to do with our lives.
[29]
So how do you know if
you should be an accountant.
[33]
Hey there I'm James and
in this video I'm going to give you
[36]
five reasons why you shouldn鈥檛.
[38]
I've been working in accounting
for about seven years now
[41]
so what I'm about to share
comes straight from my own experience.
[44]
Hopefully these points will help you
decide if you really want to be an accountant.
[51]
Reason number one
you suck at Maths.
[54]
There's a widely held belief that
to be an accountant
[57]
you need to be good at maths
and that's no wonder we busy
[60]
ourselves with numbers all day long.
[63]
But the truth is you don't have to be
good at math to become an accountant.
[67]
I'm one of those weirdos who
actually enjoys Maths
[70]
it鈥檚 why I chose to study physics
to begin with and when it made the
[74]
jump to accounting I was hoping that
I'd be able to put some of that maths to use.
[78]
However I was surprised at how
little I ended up using at work.
[83]
99% of the time I was doing the basics
adding, subtracting, multiplying
[88]
and dividing and to do all these
I was mostly using a calculator
[93]
even for the really easy stuff or Excel.
[96]
In fact being good at Excel is a more
useful skill to develop as an accountant.
[102]
Spreadsheets can help you breeze
through tasks that would otherwise
[105]
be long and well tedious.
[108]
So if you want to be an accountant
don't worry about the Maths
[111]
become a demon at spreadsheets instead.
[115]
Reason number two
Accounting is boring.
[119]
It's sexy to follow your passion
but this isn't always the best advice.
[123]
A career in something like accounting
might seem boring on the face of it
[127]
and yeah sometimes it can be
but most of the time it comes down
[132]
to your mindset and how you
approach your work.
[136]
Accounting is cyclical by nature
so there are tasks that we have to repeat
[140]
every month, every quarter, every year.
[142]
When I started in accounting
I was an auditor working in London
[146]
and on my first day at the clients office
I was handed a stack of 75 invoices
[151]
and told to check all of them
against a report.
[155]
Not exactly riveting.
[157]
But as I learned more and developed
my skills as an accountant I faced
[162]
more difficult and interesting challenges.
[165]
It became about problem-solving
and getting on with people.
[168]
One day I woke up and discovered that
accounting wasn't so boring after all.
[174]
Have you ever wondered how
people ever end up
[176]
loving what they do for a living?
[178]
If so I've got a book
recommendation for you
[181]
So Good They Can't Ignore You
by Cal Newport.
[185]
Reason number three
Accounting is hard.
[188]
Warren Buffett famously called
accounting the language of business
[192]
and he's not wrong.
[194]
To me at least learning accounting
was like learning a foreign language
[197]
there are some basic fundamentals
that you really need to understand
[201]
once you've got those down
everything else starts to fall into place.
[205]
I found accounting hard
but if you want it to be easy
[209]
then I encourage you to really take
the time to understand the basics.
[214]
That's what this channel is all about.

[237]
Reason number four
[238]
Accountants work long hours.
[240]
This can happen from time to time
but it depends on a few factors
[245]
what your job is
who you work for
[247]
and timing.
[248]
I've worked in public accounting
as an auditor and in industry
[252]
as a financial accountant
and I feel like I've experienced
[255]
the worst and the best
when it comes to a work-life balance.
[259]
There are times when
I've had to work late
[262]
eating dinner in the office
getting home at midnight
[264]
for weeks at a time
it sucked and I wouldn't wish
[268]
that stress on anyone.
[270]
But it's not always like this.
[272]
I've had long stretches of time
doing flexible eight-hour days
[276]
it was pretty good.
[277]
Not all jobs are created equal
and not all accountants have to work late.
[282]
You may not land your dream job
on your first attempt
[285]
but if you're willing to take
a few risks and change positions
[288]
or companies every now and then
if you have to.
[291]
I'm sure that you can find a role
that suits your lifestyle.
[295]
Reason number five
I get asked about this one a lot.
[297]
Will technology or AI replace accountants?
[301]
In my opinion yes and no.
[303]
I鈥檝e got another book recommendation for you
[306]
Deep Work by Cal Newport.
[308]
By the way this video is not sponsored
by Cal or anything
[311]
I've been reading some of these books lately
and I just want to share the love
[314]
you know
whatever
[315]
In Deep Work Cal reckons there are
three types of people that will
[319]
thrive in today's modern world.
[322]
Owners who have access to large
amounts of capital.
[326]
Superstars aka. people who are
the best at what they do
[329]
and highly skilled workers
or people who are able to work well
[334]
and creatively with intelligent machines.
[337]
Unfortunately most of us don't
fit into this first group
[341]
we don't all have large amounts
of cash lying around
[344]
but it's within all of us to keep on practicing
and become the best of what we do
[349]
or to teach ourselves to use and keep
up-to-date with new technology
[354]
when it comes out.
[355]
As machines get smarter
more low-skilled jobs
[358]
are likely to become automated.
[360]
More repetitive bookkeeping tasks
will be done by machines.
[364]
But accounting isn't a low-skilled job.
[367]
We still need people who can
work well and creatively with new software
[371]
and we still need people who can understand
analyse and interpret results.
[377]
So if you want to be an accountant
I encourage you to keep on learning.
[381]
If you put in the effort to become
the best at what you do
[384]
or stay up-to-date with the latest technology
then you'll be a valuable asset
[388]
for years to come.
[390]
If I鈥檝e put you off accounting
then good I guess.
[393]
I hope this narrows down your choices
and you find a different career
[396]
that's right for you.
[397]
